I have been coming to Panera Bread for the past 20+ years. It used to be my favorite study spot when I went back to school to get my teaching license. Ordered thru app for pickup, app says drive up to rapid pickup and wait. Waited 10 minutes then called, lady says pull up to window. I pull up to window and they gave me wrong order, then they started making my catered order and waited 20 minutes! Wow. I have not been to a Panera in over a year. Ordered online. Pick up was timely. I do not usually give such low scores, but the quality of the food for the price was dismal. I saw that there is a new menu. I am not sure why as the quality of food I ordered in the past was much better. My husband and I ordered a bowl of the chicken and rice soup, the bacon avocado melt and the Fuji apple chicken salad. The soup base seemed very thick and almost floury. There was chicken present, but not generous. The Fuji apple salad was better, but advertised with grape tomatoes and Fuji apples. There were three small grape tomatoes in the salad and the Fuji apples were chips like you buy at the grocery store. The sandwich was very disappointing. It look decidedly different than in the photo. It looked smashed like someone had sat on it. I could taste some bacon, saw some small slivers of avocado but it was mainly chipotle aioli. I do not remember seeing or tasting any cheddar cheese. I am not sure if Panera was bought out by some food conglomerate like many restaurants are, if so, they are going in the wrong direction. Returned to the store and had a hard time getting anyone's attention (bread maker was wearing Air pods and ignored me - waved may arms and she finally reacted). I don't usually come to this Panera location as often as I'd would want to...but I might start to! Grace (I hope that's her name!) was at the caisher and she was super friendly and helpful! I was a bit indecisive about which salad to eat, and she listed the contents in the salad (which I appreciate since I'm watching what I eat lol). She was so patient with me and I really appreciated that! In addition, also accomandating with me when I asked for dressing on the side. Ended up getting half Cesar salad. There is an area with tablets so you can order food instead of waiting in line. There is an area that you can pick up your food. It's very clean and the staff is very nice . We purchased some asiago bagels to go and they were stale which was a bit disappointing. The staff had a bunch of younger employees who were goofing around while we were in line waiting. Panera flatbreads: I was enticed into buying a Panera Flatbread as they looked so good on their advertisements. I know they are promoting them, and as a long time customer, I decided to help and to try out their new product. Well, I went to the Maplewood Panera located on White Bear Ave in Maplewood, and ordered two flatbreads. My wife and I brought them home an both were terrible. I could not believe how bad they were. I did email the company, and have not heard back from them. The two flatbreads we tried were void of almost any kind of topping. Did have a little cheese, but hardly any sauce and no veggies as we had ordered. The crust was tough and rubbery. I did give them a chance to get back to me, but they did not. I have been to this Panera 5 times since it's opening after the one further south on White Bear closed. Every time, they have been understaffed and behind. The first couple of visits I thought it might be because they were new and still training staff. The third & forth times, I thought maybe they were just unusually busy. But today, I am convinced it's poor management. It was not unusually busy. The counter staff were friendly. The person at the cash register was also trying to clear the overflowing bus station. Tables were dirty. We had to ask the same person who seemed to be doing everything else in the front of the house to wipe one down for us. He used a wet napkin that left puddles on the table. We finally dried it ourselves. We had each ordered just soup because of time constraints. We waited over 10 minutes for the buzzers to go off. How long does it take to ladle soup? Obviously about 15 minutes at this Panera! When my bowl was up, I arrived with it back at my table to discover a metal knife, but a plastic spoon. What soup and salad place does not have enough spoons ready at noon on a Sunday? Apparently one with very poor management. I like Panera and their food choices. Giving it two stars when it could have been three. I'll explain later. Had the ham and Swiss soufflé, chocolate croissant, cranberry orange muffin and Parmesan cheese bagel with chives spread. The soufflé recipe must have changed from years past as it was not flaky and good anymore. Disappointing. The chocolate croissant was as expected nothing fancy but was flaky and tasted fresh. The bagel texture was perfect plump yet nice crunch on the outside. The orange cranberry muffin was dry and and orange cranberry was only sprinkled on top before baking and did not appear throughout the muffin. I'd skip this muffin. Ok so I'm giving this place a two star because I arrived here about 8:30/8:40 and I noticed the fireplace wasn't on, which a warm fireplace was the only reason why I bothered to patron Panera this morning and come to this location in the first place. Panera is a slightly expensive but good tasting corporate bakery, which can't compare to some other bakeries in the cities, but does a pretty decent job trying. Get a Panera card and you can start to earn points towards things like free drinks - which is what happened when I went there with a friend. During lunch time tables can be hard to come by but this Panera isn't as bad as others, in regards to finding seating. Their food is flavorful, tasty and fresh. Let me start off by saying that my food yesterday was great. I always enjoy the salads at Panera. I rarely interact with staff, because I usually use a kiosk to order and then just pick it up. I love these things about Panera. But the main reason that I go there is for the atmosphere. Panera has always felt warm and welcoming - but not this one, after the remodel. I am normally a fan of modern and minimalist design, but this redesign has no heart. First off, no fireplace. Second, there is not a linger longer vibe. Perhaps that's the intent, but if so, they're taking away what made Panera a great place. Now it's just cold and modern. The quality and freshness of these foods had gone downhill and the prices are sky high! I never leave feeling I get a good meal for the price. My grandma and I came all the way from Wisconsin for this very MAPLEWOOD PANERA and when we come in for our liquid bowl of happiness we read the sign on the front door that crushes our little hearts because it said they were out the one thing I looked forward to for ONE WHOLE HOUR.
