I had the brisket, and we started with the tomatoes and cornbread. The brisket wasn't the best I've ever had, but it was definitely good. I swapped the fries for the potatoes, and I'm glad I did--they were really good. The appetizers were probably the highlight of the meal. Both the tomatoes and the cornbread were excellent. Service was friendly and quick. One funny moment: my boss ordered a cocktail and found out they were pre-made, so he couldn't customize it. I've been here several times in the past and they've all been good. Last night I went with my mom and we sat at the bar and had dinner and drinks. Drinks were fine. Silverware was spotty as hell! Attention to details little ones like this are what make or break a restaurant. Service was fine. Nothing to write home about. My mom ordered the crab soup, which she loved. She also ordered the New Orleans shrimp bowl. The shrimp were wayyyyyyyy overcooked and extremely rubbery and hard. It's not good whenever you're over cooking your shrimp. It was inedible. The dirty rice and creole sauce were excellent. I don't think I'd put asparagus in this dish, but that's what it came with? Didn't think asparagus was a southern style vegetable? I ordered the special. It was brisket birria tacos. If you've ever ordered birria tacos before, you know it always comes with a beef consome for dipping your tacos in. This is why it's called birria tacos and any decent chef who's been educated about Mexican cuisine knows this! Ugh! Barely any cheese in the tacos. I was really missing the consome. I asked for it from the bartender and he said yeah it usually comes with it. I received a side dish of hot sauce instead? I'll post pics. For $80, over-rubbery shrimp and not birria tacos, was extremely underrated. I was very disappointed. Normally, I've enjoyed my last three visits. I felt like we overpaid. Please, if you're going to call it birria tacos, don't forget the consome! Any random recipe on the Internet calls for a beef broth for Birria tacos. Definitely serves up something different than we usually get in MN! The biscuits are a must get for sure. The chicken tenders were also really good. There were lots of things I wanted to try on the menu so I might return. It was a little on the pricier side but the portions were pretty decent! Can Southern keep it up? This time they fell flat. We had the snapper which was watery, and under seasoned. It might not be fresh but do not make it obvious. She crab soup was not good at all. Under seasoned as well. Nachos were the best thing going. Our server was more focused on staying focused than customer service. We will not be back for a little while. And you know what - I liked the waitress until she completely turned. I stopped here for lunch when I was in the area running errands. I ordered the shrimp bowl, which has andouille sausage, bell pepper, and shrimp in a creamy sauce. The sauce was a little saltier than I would have liked, but otherwise delish. The dish came with dirty rice and asparagus, which were both cooked perfectly (asparagus still had some snap to it). Our service was a little slow, and our server never checked in regarding the meal or if we wanted another round of drinks. The interior of the restaurant is attractive. I was on the hunt for a restaurant spot in Woodbury to meet a friend for some drinks/apps and Southern Social really drew me in with their menu. The restaurant was nice, but still casual enough to be perfect for my taste and I was excited to get my hands on some brisket. When we arrived I thought the atmosphere was perfect for our needs and I was pumped until I slid into the booth without thinking and landed directly in water (yikes). This could've been from cleaning or a small spill, but we just swiped the rest away and kept it moving. The service quickly made up for it. Our waitress was training someone in, but they were both kind and knowledgeable on the menu. She recommended I try the Fig 76 for a fruity cocktail while my partner went with an Old Fashioned. For food, there was too much to try and we ended up with fried pickles, dry rub wings (they didn't have Buffalo), mashed potatoes, the brisket entree, and some hush puppies. All things considered I would say the food was decent, but not mind blowing. I enjoyed the wings, potatoes, and pickles, but was pretty disappointed with the brisket. When I order brisket, I'm really looking for that fall apart/melt in your mouth situation but this was definitely well done and a bit underwhelming. Fun space for a celebratory dinner! Our server was a little quirky but nice haha. They have drink "punch bowls" which were fun but hard to finish off with the ice haha, and they give you "tea cups" for them. The cocktails we tried were all really good, including a vodka smash and berry or orange margarita. The chicken tenders were fine. The ranch was good, sweet fries great, corn side good, and the cheese curds were phenomenal. The best part of the night was the bread pudding. Good food. The crab sweet corn entree is not at all what I imagined when I read the menu which is why pictures are so important. I was staying next door and pleasantly surprised of this bustling restaurant next door as it is in a bit of a random location. On Thursday evening it was packed and we made it with minutes to spare with their Happy Hour specials. Love that you don't have to sit at the bar just for the Happy Hour deals. Friend and I both had a beer and ordered their BBQ & Hoecake. First time having a hoecake, and this appetizer was the star of the night. Soft cornmeal pancake with pulled pork, BBQ sauces and crispy onions. It was absolutely delicious. Saw their chicken tenders were the star of the restaurant so compromised and got their Sunrise chicken sandwich. Fried egg, bacon, cheddar and fried potato strings. It was messy, but surprisingly a bit bland. Thank goodness for the Cry Baby Craig's hot sauce that elevated it. However, parts of the chicken were too dry for me. The fries looked really good too, but they tasted stale. For dessert we had their butter cake that had a lot going on with other flavors and sweets. It was really good but a bit too sweet for me. Minnesota isn't exactly a hot spot for Southern cuisine, but Southern Social puts out some pretty good comfort food. There's not shortage of places to find fried chicken and pizza in the Cities, but Southern Social does both well, has some ok barbeque and is overall pretty approachable for most diners. Their lunch deal has become a regular in my work lunch rotation - select two from either a half sandwich, half pizza or half salad for $12. It's reasonably priced and has good options. The restaurant is sizeable, has a decent sized patio and parking is abundant. Service has always been friendly - definitely one of the more consistent offerings in the Woodbury area. read more

I do love being a vegetarian but sometimes... Southern Social made me wish I can have a nibble. I stopped in here with no intention on ordering food or looking the menu; glad I did. I visited here for their Scotch and cigar night they throw once in a while. It was a good environment; just wish they had more ceiling heaters as it was a cold night. We decided to have some warm food; I ordered the cheese curds and they are definitely pretty delicious. I took the liberty of stealing some mac and cheese from my friend and it also did not disappoint. The server was nice however, we were outside for a good while before she actually came to close us out; had to come inside to get someone to close our bill. I thought Southern Social would be one of my favorite restaurants. However, I went back to visit a few times since my last review, and both times were great. They added the chicken and waffles to their menu and also the jerk chicken sandwich which I was excited to try. The chicken and waffles were great on my first visit and the second visit which was just this week was very disappointing. The sandwich wasn't very jerky at all. The chicken was shredded but not very flavorful at all, and very dry. I was kind of upset that I love jerk anything and that sandwich missed the mark. The coleslaw is not good at all, no flavor it's like it's missing an ingredient or something. And my wife said the cheese curds were too greasy, and the jambalaya was okay but nothing special. I won't lie the fried pickles are the only thing that saved the day and Morgans's great service. I was shocked No one came out to talk to us nor did they comp any of the food. The menu here is slightly different than Eagan. And the food isn't as good. We were seated right away but our server was standing at the front talking with other employees so it took 15 minutes before she came back to take our order. The food was also slow to come out when they weren't very busy. The mac and cheese didn't have much cheese sauce. My chicken sandwich was custom as I asked for chicken and pimento sauce. The pimento sauce is great but the chicken was dry. My husband said the same about his chicken and waffle. It was 20 minutes after we were done eating before our server came back. The restaurant itself was beautiful, with big tables for groups, cozy booths, plenty of bar seating, and an overall lovely atmosphere. The only downside was the bathroom had a strong fragrant smell to it, almost too strong imo. The food was great! I felt a bit silly ordering the chicken tenders and fries, but since they're "world famous," I gave them a try and they did not disappoint. The fried pickles were lightly breaded so if you're a pickle person, these are for you! The Nashville chicken sandwich was amazing. We arrived around 5 p.m. on a Friday and had about a 20 minute wait. The wait times picked up to 35 minutes by the time we got seated. We couldn't decide on what to order so we settled on Fried Chicken and the Rotisserie Chicken. Our waiter Brandon was attentive and professional. An incredible menu. I'd need to visit here a dozen times to try everything I want. I finally settled on the Nashville Fried Chicken Sandwich. Very good. Chicken was great; top with slaw and a sauce - a little kick to it but not bad. Our table also had the Deviled Eggs and BBQ Hoecakes for appetizers. The hoecakes are huge & you get three. Centrally located off the highway in Woodbury. Easy to find with plenty of parking. Came for a grad party so we had the small party room in the back. I was greeted by the hostess who pointed to where it was although I would have expected to be shown. I came late but The server was incredibly frazzled and it showed. Was just putting things down on the table and expecting us to know whose food belonged to who and asking who ordered what. I ordered chicken with some sides and my order was quite smaller than everyone else's. What was most disappointing is when it came time to pay, she piled all the bills in the middle of the table and WE had to figure out which check belonged to which person. On top of that, she took 30+ minutes to process all the payments because something got messed up. It was disastrous. The potato salad was mini red potatoes with mustard squirted on top (at least that is all that you tasted) . The food was decently good! I wouldn't get the side of corn again, but the Mac and cheese side was good. The chicken tenders were good but nothing crazy. My husband liked his ribs a lot but his fries were cold and bland. My friend couldn't eat the bottom bun of her sandwich because it was too soggy. All 5 of us got drinks and only 2/5 were impressed the others were overly sweet. This location is a big one and it's nice in here. This evening it wasn't too busy and service was unfortunately, very slow. Everyone was happy with their meal of choice. For an appetizer, we got deviled eggs. Not too bad. We were a little confused why there were like a pink color, first time seeing that. The Nashville chicken sandwich was tasty. However, it was not spicy whatsoever, just flavorful. Chicken was juicy. There are a few chicken sandwiches on the menu that look appealing, specifically the hot mustard chicken sandwich. Girls night out for dinner at Southern Social...my first time! Woo hoo! We were brought to the back room which I thought was a private room which had already 1 extra large party and another party of 2 sitting there. It ended up being a bit loud back there because it was such a small room when there were plenty of tables in the main dining room. Strange but okay. I ordered an unsweetened ice tea and gfree shrimp and grits. The portion was a healthy size and the ice tea was great. The food was just okay but definitely very rich tasting/flavors. Our waitress handled our ordering but wasn't the most friendliest or personable waitress I've ever had. Nothing bad but nothing really memorable. If I known there were specials I might've orders from that menu but neither the hostess or waitress mentioned it upon sitting down. Upon leaving you could tell the hostess was done with his day and just wanted to leave. Glad to have the new location in the east metro! We have enjoyed the patio and happy hour here. For the most part, the patio is shaded during afternoon happy hour, so you can enjoy a nice early evening meal there. We have sat inside at the bar as well and the improvements in sound deadening have helped. It it still a bar with a lot of open space, though, so there is noise. Service is good here, have never been left waiting long. Happy hour has decent food options; I do wish there were a couple more options for drinks, but I still have been able to find items to enjoy. Have tried a variety of items here. The brisket sandwich was huge, almost enough for 2 people. The potato salad is tasty as a side. Wings on happy hour menu are yummy, the sticky sauce is my fave, even if it's messy. Want to work my way through the menu here as so much always grabs my attention! read more

I've been meaning to try Southern Social for a while now. Walking in, the patio is beautiful with all the blooming flowers. The inside is dark, but welcoming with a contemporary modern decor. For an app, we started with the dry rub wings. I really liked them, I just wish they were cooked a bit longer. The dry rub flavor was amazing tho. For my main, I went with the shrimp and grits. It was a large portion and plenty of shrimp. Very well seasoned and full of flavor. It was a bowl of cheesy goodness with bacon and corn. We shared the brown butter cake for dessert. It was fine. The cake itself was really moist and delicious. But where this dessert went wrong, was the ring of mashed sweet potatoes surrounding it. It was like a bunch of baby food. To start with....sorry I didn't get pics! First date material tonight at this newer place in Woodbury. The interior is so beautiful! Love the decor and the cozy areas. We sat in the bar area and it was so nice and warm. We started of with drinks-I had the old fashioned and it was one of the best I've had! For dinner went enjoyed a flatbread and the chicken and waffles. They were good with the exception of the flatbread having pretty burnt edges and the waffle was pretty plain.
