Breakfast, lunch, dinner Food is well prepared, thoughtfully presented and DELICIOUS!

    Pork ribs, so good!

We had a fresh baked roll, a French style pastry, empanadas and lemon meringue pie. Everything was very good, but I wish they had offered to heat up the empanadas. I especially loved the lemon pie, soooo good! One tiny negative thing, most of the offerings aren't covered, and for some reason this attracts wasps. It's a bit unsettling when you pass by. Some simple glass covers could take care of this instantly.

French dip, prime rib, and tomato soup

We stopped in for lunch after an eventful morning. Masha ordered a Negroni and Prosecc and I ordered beautiful red wine. For lunch Masha had a prime rib with a side of frites along with a delicious tomato soup garnished with fresh pears and a goat cheese mousse. (This soup was devine ). I ordered the best French dip I have ever had! The baguette was perfectly toasted and fresh baked. The meat was freshly sliced and the au jus was perfect!! It came with a side of frites as well. Of course we always order dessert, so we got it to go, we took home a mini carrot cake, a chocolate eclair, a coffee eclair, a mini lemon tart and a mini cream and fresh berry tart. I won't take off points for the service because our main server was wonderful. She constantly checked up on us and make sure that we were OK. She offered us a refill on our drinks, and was very kind and polite. The second girl that helped us at the dessert counter was another story. She just stared at me as if I was saying nothing. She also made a weird comment about the box size and handed me the biggest box she had lol I brushed it off and just said thank you and we left. In fact we came back the next day for a green juice. The same girl Maria A. Was at the counter with another young man. I asked her about the fresh made juices and she was acting like she didn't know they had them. Turns to the kid and says that's so funny. So I looked at her and asked, so we're not staring at each-other blankly.. If she could get me a menu since she didn't know what her menu was ( yes i got snappy but it's because I also work with clients/ customers and I would never do this to someone. Specially talk crap in front of the customer) I then move on and show her the green juice Ana procede to order a hot matcha. She looks at me and says. We don't have that nor the masala chai. I simply said ok no worries. Took the green juice and left. I speak Spanish so when I'm in Mexico it's the first language I speak. My girlfriend however is of Russian decent but presents as "American" So I'm assuming that because she saw us speaking English that I wouldn't understand? Which makes no sense since Spanish was the fist language I started speaking. Idk still sad I didn't get my matcha but it's ok. We will still be back next time we're in town.

The mission to get to this place was far beyond what it should have been...but gf wants what she wants, so we made it our last stop in San Miguel. After begging me for 2 days but never having the time to go in, we finally made it. Gf was like a kid in a candy shop, she couldn't even decide what she wanted! Finally we settled on a brownie, 2 eclairs, and some cookies. The chocolate eclair didn't even make it back to the hotel- it was gone in 4 bites. Sweet, cold, refreshing and delicious. Next was the caramel eclair- well flavored & savory. After those two came the brownie. Sweet but not too sweet, and definitely seems like an old secret recipe- something that grandma would never tell the granddaughter-in-law. I guess my gfs intuition was spot on; there are numerous very good reasons as to why the place has been around since 1901. If you're in san miguel- definitely take the time to stop in!

The chocolate is piping hot, and you can enjoy it sitting somewhere by the plaza. My partner really likes his churros filled, so we tried a few varieties. We tried rompope (like a spiked eggnog), which was creamy and had a nice kick. Later tried the cajeta (goat milk caramel), and my boyfriend the lechera (like a condensed milk)- the cajeta was lighter and sweeter than I expected. I think our fav was actually the rompope, which we also hadn't seen made elsewhere. Honestly, there's nothing like a fresh fried churro. When in doubt just grab a bag of the plain. You can see them frying them to order, and with huge pots of chocolate. I recommend the chocolate with milk over the one with water. Might as well go all in. The churros are crisp and sugary on the outside and a little moist in the inside. Definitely an institution.

Even before Jamie W and I arrived, I knew a trip to San Miguel de Allende would not be complete…read morewithout a visit to this classic churro cafe. It was the place that chef Pati Jinich proclaimed as the best churro purveyor in town on her PBS TV series. Located just a block east of the city's social hub, Jardín Allende, the cafe was quite chaotic on early Saturday evening. No surprise there was a lengthy queue. While it was moving quickly, the menu was nowhere to be seen. By the time we got to the counter, I just improvised our order on the spot. We went with a couple of the MX$120 French Chocolate sets which afforded us both a Hot Chocolate and a Cajeta-Flled Churro. We added two MX$11 Plain Churros just because we wanted to try their signature item. The advantage lies in the freshness. The churros come right out of the fryer and into the bowl dusted with sugar and cinnamon. The contrast between the crispy, sweet exterior and the soft dough is what makes the churro stand out. The cajeta added sweet indulgence, but truth be told, the plain version was decadent enough on its own (Photo 9). This was especially true when we dipped the churros into the rich, piping hot chocolate (Photo 8). Luckily, we were able to snag a cafe table that became available. It was only when we sat down that we noticed the full extent of their menu which includes empanadas, enchiladas, and Mexican breakfast plates. We also saw all the framed posters and magazine covers on the walls and realized they all featured the owner, famous soap opera actress Margarita Gralia, Mexico's answer to Susan Lucci. Conveniently located on the cobblestoned artery between our hotel and Zona Centro's social hub, Jardin Allende, this three-floor cafe was compact but surprisingly relaxing given the constrained layout of the seating. The cafe's name translates appropriately to "good aromas" since the roasted beans wafted throughout the space. On our first visit, we arrived in the middle of the afternoon and treated ourselves to the MX$85 Affogato, a nice combo of vanilla gelato and an espresso shot (Photo 10). We came back the following morning when the place was literally percolating with customers. This time we shared a table on the rooftop. What I appreciated was how the owner had no compunction about telling laptoppers not to monopolize tables clearly set up for multiple people. This time we had true beverages with their own twists. I had the MX$60 Cococcino, a cappuccino with a touch of coconut oil, and Jamie went for the MX$70 Iced Buzz Latte with honey and a double espresso shot (Photo 9). Both perfectly satisfied because beyond the quality of the beans, we saw the exacting process they followed in their execution. It was a smooth brew in a chill space that was obviously attracting a lot of expats. I wish we had more time for a third visit. Going with the pineapple pastry, we thought the flavors were very good: perfect amount of sweetness and a fresh tasty pineapple filling. After much debate, I decided to go with the pan dulce to share with my sister as a dessert after our meal, and I'm so glad I did. Not only was the pan dulce absolutely delicious, but the kindness of the owners made the experience even more special. It was only 13 pesos, but we only had a 500-peso bill, so they generously gave it to us for free. We felt bad, so we gave them $1 USD as a small thank-you, but their generosity truly stood out. Pan Dulce itself - It was perfect--the custard filling wasn't overly sweet and had a slightly gelatinous texture that I really enjoyed. The outside was super crispy, and the sugar coating added just the right amount of sweetness. It was the perfect treat to end our lunch! Between the amazing pastries and the wonderful hospitality, I would absolutely come back and recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic and delicious pan dulce.
