I've eaten here in the past when Larry owned the place with his wife. The new owner is Kim who was pleasant to chat with. I stopped here to see if Larry was still here but Kim, the new owner said that Larry left 9 years ago and moved into the city. The place hasn't changed since I was last here and a great stop before heading out to Hollister. A great motorcycle ride with lots of curves and awesome sights getting here. A local friend told us to be sure and stop in at the Panoche Inn for a drink and lunch. We got there on a Monday and tried the door.....closed. We were so bummed. Went around to the side door and tried that too. Locked. Started to leave snd we hear a voice "can I help you? We told her we were bummed she was closed and started to leave. Then she said hey, come on in and ill make you lunch! What a nice lady. She made us a couple of cheeseburgers with chips and we talked. Kim said she was the owner. There is no way that would happen in the east bay! If you are in the area on I 5 , Tuesday through Sunday, go see her. Its worth the few miles to get there! The most authentic Cowboy bar ever. We were on a three day mc tour with friends from Santa Barbara Riders.We decided to explore Panoche Road. To our wonderful surprise Larry and his wife were celebrating their 14 th anniversary of owning the Panoche Inn by having a free customer hamburger and hotdog bbq with awesome beans and potatoes salad. Larry the owner came up to me to introduce himself as we parked our bikes and to invite us for a meal on him. Everyone there was very friendly. Larry's wife even gave us her recipe for her kosher pickles with her own kick. I invite anyone and everyone to make it to this special place. The road there from San Juan Bautista is a bit windy and a few pot holes. But a great ride! Ohhhh, did I say they have cold beer and a billiards table.....and Larry wife makes a heck of turkey sandwich. Fives stars for being at the right place at the right time! This is a nice little homey bar and grill. My folks and I were tooling along the backroads from Paciene to Hwy 5 and shooting pictures of nice looking barns and field and commenting on the wonderful geography when I found the call of nature. My dad, who has a phenomenal memory for geography told me that there was a bar and grill up aways. Of course, "aways" is a relative term, but sure enough, around the bend came The Panoche Inn. Greeted by the sweetest, gentlest dog on the Planet, named Diego, we stumbled into the coolness of the bar. Dad remembered the conversation he had with the owner last time he was there (ten years ago?!) and asked for an update on his granddaughter and everything else under the sun. Cans of pop were a dollar and ice cold. The bathrooms were clean and friendly. We didn't eat anything, but dad remembers that the sandwich he had last time were good. Overall, the owners were nice and friendly and I was glad to have a place to rest my eyes for a moment off the road. read more

Frosty beer and really great, homemade sandwiches. I've been to a barbecue they catered for a large group, and it was excellent. One of the best bars I know for just hanging out and chewing the fat. One thing sticks in my mind, though, above all of the other awesomeness. Some kids poked their heads in the door one afternoon when we were there. They didn't speak English--possibly the children of local farm workers. Larry spoke kindly to them and then gave them some free ice cream. I don't know any other details, but among all of the other terrific things about this place, that kind gesture stands out in my memory. Kind hearts count for a lot in my book. Good folks. A great place to stop during or after a day of birding, sightseeing, etc in the scenic Panoche Valley. The Panoche Inn has become a must-stop tradition for my family and I. This place is a gem in the middle of NOWHERE - and I mean NOWHERE (15 miles or more in any direction) - The owner, Larry, is a very pleasant retired fellow (ask him what he retired from for a big surprise) who wanted to run a beer bar and now he is doing it! His wife in the kitchen, makes good sandwiches (I had the chicken salad, yum). There are not a lot of choices, but there are enough. If you are coming through this is a must stop, bring extra dollar bills for the ceiling, and your camera for pictures of a place you will be telling stories about for decades to come. We go to Panoche Valley every year to look at birds and other wildlife. We absolutely look forward to eating the great sandwiches and pickles at the Panoche Inn every year. Yesterday we walked in and were told that they were not making sandwiches and instead we could have microwaved Cisco burritos which I cannot eat. My wife and I just returned from this road trip that has been on calendar for some time and it was way overdue. The visit is everything we had hoped it would be. An incredible ride with you, your best friend (wife) the wind and all of God's creations all around you just to remind you that you are alive and Blessed. This is one check on our Bucket List and we can't wait to return. If you're a romantic person and want to score some points with your spouse I suggest that you visit this hidden gem. The canyons, deer, falcons, no traffic... are all incredibly beautiful. You have to ride slow because the road is in fair condition but that's a good thing so you can look around and enjoy the entire experience. Larry the owner is the sweetest guy in the world and my wife said "he is the type of guy that would do anything for anybody" which was the wonderful impression that he left on us after a two hour visit. Very nice folks here, who took good care of a group of bicyclists who wandered in off of Panoche Road on the way to Mercey Hot Springs. Filled all of our water bottles for us and then fed us lunch. Got a sandwich (nothing fancy, but pretty much exactly what I wanted, and made to order), which I ate outside (plenty of outdoor seating). A buddy & I took a motorcycle day ride from Paso Robles that included a stop at the Panoche Inn. I've been there a few times and have always enjoyed my visits. Today was no exception. There are a few reasons I like stopping there: The sandwiches are always tasty. The atmosphere is comfortable California rustic. The owners are friendly (as is there dog!) and the beer is always really cold. If you call ahead, you may even arrive there during one of their outstanding barbecues. If you come from Hwy 25, you take Panoche Rd. east. If you approach from the I-5, you take Little Panoche Rd. west. No matter which way you approach, you will experience some beautiful scenery, but some pretty rough road. It's passable by all bikes, but you will feel every bump, pot-hole and dirty corner. Got a wild hair this afternoon, jumped in the car. Started drivin'. No particular destination; just wingin' it... Coming out of Hollister...past Tres Pinos... Hmn...Panoche Road, okay........ 25 miles of winding, desolate, God-foresaken bone-dry road to NOwhere. After 25 miles of what felt like driving on the Moon, I was just about to give up and turn around, since there was no indication of civilization ahead, but a little voice said, "Give it 5 more miles" (or thoughts to that effect). Okay...but only five more miles, no more... I was keeping an eagle eye on the odometer in case I had to describe to AAA the desolate patch of ground where they could find me, when -- What do you know?!...at the +5 mile point I happened upon what at first I thought might be a mirage...but, no...it was real! And I was real thirsty now. And hungry. It was like a signpost from God: The Panoche Inn, "Coldest Beer In Town!". SOLD! Went inside, nobody else in there but a very smiley gentleman behind the (very funky) bar who welcomed me in and pulled me a draft. I ordered a game-changer pastrami sammich. We had a nice conversation (me and Larry, who also owns the joint) for the better part of an hour. Made a new friend, and it was just one of those serendipitous moments that make this whole life experience fun. Even though it seemed like the drive from hell, it was worth it, and I'll be back! What nice people! My car broke down five miles from the inn, and there is no cell phone service in the valley. I got a ride to the inn, and they graciously allowed me to use their phone. I had to wait for more than an hour for the tow truck, and was happy to find that the sandwiches were fresh and homemade. Food was so good we even bought a sandwich for our tow truck driver. Cannot recommend this place enough for their kindness and good food. Clean restrooms, and interesting mineral specimens on display. Worth the stop. read more

LARRY and CHERYL are great! Always stop at the Panoche Inn on my way to and from PW and from Hollister. They always have some great stories to tell and the atmosphere is really relaxed.
