Sweet and patient staff. They took their time to explain menu items to me and make suggestions. They even let me sample a few sauces before I decided on one. So why two stars you may ask? That's a fair question. Two stars is for the food. Even though everything appeared fresh, this was the blandest vegan poke bowl I have ever had. The food at Papa Yu is the best. I ordered the California roll, and I could not be satisfied compared to other restaurants. The California roll has more crab meat and more wasabi compared to sushi rolls in its competitors. The California roll is moist and flavorful. The service is very awesome and quick. I didn ot haveto wait more than 30 minutes for my meal. Most of the meals are distributed from the kitchen to the counter. The service staff forces customers to transport their own meals from the counter to the table. The restautnat has a contemporary decor. The decor represented a prostitution den I visited in the Las vegas area. Too bad the Papa Yu place doesn't serve a bit of Mama Yu on its side. The fish itself wasn't bad but I don't like how you don't get to see them make your order because they could get your order wrong and you not even know it. Definitely one of our favourite Poke places in all of Houston and actually has some great Boba as well. A little bit less so on the Boba, because after all this is one of the greatest bubble tea cities in the country, but it's still right up there and not bad at all. When we're talkin about the Poke we're talkin about some of the best of its kind in TX. Maybe not as good as the that we really love and Midtown (yes it feels weird saying that) but it's incredibly good and every bite is delicious, a decent portion for a decent price too, and we were in love with it. Barbie even came back here by herself (sob). It's also much cheaper than a lot of the alternatives. I actually enjoy ordering to go here, but the food and drinks are a hit or miss. Service has always been friendly when I'm here. I like to build my own poke bowl so I can add my favorite toppings in. However, the bowl size is a little small for the price they charge. Sometimes they add a little too much shoyu sauce too so the rice gets a tad salty. But if I stick to spicy mayo it comes out pretty good! I like their charcoal rice option, it adds depth. They are also one of the few places left that still offer scallop for poke. I also enjoy ordering some rolls, fried oyster (not as crispy as I would like but good flavor), and I order their grapefruit yakult drink. I like that they used real grapefruit not syrup. This is definitely not a fast paced service so I do recommend calling order ahead or order and then go grocery shopping next door. read more

A different spin on spam musubi for sure. The pieces are huge, the spam isn't grilled, there is imitation crab layered in it, then it's tempura fried. I really don't know how this place has bad reviews. Been living in the area for 8 months now and this has become our... "we can't decide what we want for dinner but want something easy and good," eating here a few times a month. The sushi is delicious. Not some over priced fancy BS. Shrimp tempura and shaggy dog rolls. Staff is always extremely nice and pricing is more than reasonable. The watermelon smoothies at Papa Yu are a hidden gem, they cut up fresh melons/cucumber daily. I paid 5.00 for 22 oz, of fresh fruit with not much else than simple syrup. I got the salad with ponzu sauce and I honestly can't tell you if anything was good. Everything was drenched in spicy ponzu. I think maybe they are used to seasoning rice dishes with a heavier hand but with salad, you don't need as much. Everything tasted like sauce. I ate in the dark in the car on the way home and really couldn't tell what I was eating. I then got a really hard chunk of white stuff that was inedible and hard to chew. Recently moved office buildings off of Katy Fwy and I am so happy to have found a good, quick poké place nearby. The service was attentive and friendly as soon as I walked in. When I told the man behind the counter it was my first time in, he gave me a quick rundown of the menu which I really appreciated. I opted for a Build Your Own poké bowl which consisted of white rice (they have a brown rice option), fresh salmon, snow crab, jalapeños, cucumber, cilantro and edamame. A new person behind the counter is the one who built my bowl and he was meticulous about everything he did from positioning the ingredients over the rice to tossing the fish and a few other things in a spicy ponzu sauce I asked for. Finished the bowl off with spicy mayo, sesame seeds and garlic crisps - it turned out so good and it was very fresh tasting. I made a last minute decision to add an order of fried dumplings and they were ready within 5 minutes. My total was about $15 and well worth it. They have everything from bowls, noodles, sushi rolls, hot appetizers, all kinds of teas and even some ice cream. I definitely recommend this spot! read more

4.5 Stars. A miracle happened today? Yes I saw an emergency Dr appt email at 10:00am saying I had an appointment in Memorial at 11:00am open for me. I live in The Woodlands way north. Normally the drive alone is over an hour. Sh*t, I've been in bed for a week suffering from the worst horrid cold or pneumonia for a week. No shower taken while sick. I scared the tree roaches and skunks off my property.....eek!!! So I jump in the shower and drive the autobahn (1-45 and beltway 8) into triple digits. I know bad me. Dr. appt was achieved :)! So now I'm outside The Woodlands bubble before noon! This is rare for me! I want to go to Seiwa Japanese Market but it's further and my fridge/freezer is packed. So Poke time :))! I'm deprived of Poke in The Woodlands :(( . I find Papa Yu is a mile away. So I enter Papa Yu for the first time and it's somewhat busy. It's $8.99 for 2 scoops, $9.99 with 2 scoops with activated charcoal. I ask what is the activated charcoal for? Is it so I don't get food poisoning? I guess some peeps like it in their rice. Three scoops of fresh fish including unagi was $10.99. Lettuce was a free substitute for rice which I got. Sadly crab salad was not free but included as a fish choice. Anyway there's a very large fresh assortment of sides. They put the sides in a separate bowl. They had the sweet orange egg option also. My server only mixed my fresh tuna and salmon with the dressing I chose. Then he toppled it onto my separate bowl of sides with the lil fish roe on top. I found out later I could of asked for everything to have been tossed with a sauce of my choice. My side toppings and lettuce really needed some sauce. Guess what.....you can get a free steaming hot bowl of miso soup. The water is free and arrives chilled in adorable bottles. Everything pretty much went perfect. Very friendly staff....Yeah!!! Appropriately priced at $8.99 :))! They also sell poke burritos, fried tempura, sushi, ice cream, fresh juice and a variety of meals posted on the wall. I happened upon this place when visiting nearby Nobibi, and it hit the savory spot! I am not big into poke, so I was pleasantly surprised to see they offered katsu! I got the pork katsu and a friend ordered the chicken katsu. Both were served with a side of rice, a fried egg, and some greens. Out of the two, we agreed that the chicken was our favorite, but it was a close race - both were great. They have a variety of toppings and their special fruit tea is pretty good (other than whatever the black seeds are in there. Papa Yu is in a strip mall near Ranch 99. While we arrived close to closing time on a weekday, they had constant traffic for take out. We ordered the The Triple, Texas Spicy, Dragon Balls, and the Salty Lemonade. The 2 entrees came with an excellent miso soup. The Triple was excellent with a great balance of Tempura Shrimp, Cooked Eel, and Crab. Each of these were cooked well and were tasty. My wife enjoyed the Texas Spicy. She said it was very spicy due to the spicy Tuna and the Jalapeños. All the sauces complimented the bowls. The Dragon Balls serves with a spicy mayo were good, but due to the size of the entrees, we might pass on these next time. The Salty Lemonade was a new and exciting find. The description does not due the drink justice.it is a little sour, a little salty and carbonated. Definitely something to order again. All made from natural ingredients. I ordered at Papa Yu for the first time today and was not impressed at all. I ordered a large Poke bowl with salmon, shrimp tempura, white rice, cilantro, seaweed salad, avocado, crispy onions, and masago. Very basic since it was my first time ordering from them. First issue, the avocado was HARD, not ripe at all. Second issue, the salmon tasted bad (not fresh) and the seaweed salad also tasted bad. Third, the serving size was really small. I spent $13 for some rice and 2 pieces of shrimp tempura . I've spent $13.95 at another sushi place for a poke bowl and the serving size was twice a big and better/fresher ingredients. This is my first time trying this spot. Upon walking in the staff was not welcoming. My order required an adjustment due to allergies to certain food, which i had to request after placing the order. While the staff did accommodate the allergy they were not nice about it and continued to have an attitude throughout the encounter. When saying thank you, the staff continued to ignore it.
