They also had a lot of traditional items/supplies for tea ceremonies, calligraphy, and kimonos. I had fun looking through all the items as it brought me back to our summer in Japan. Apparently they have a long standing history in LA, having opened in 1946 after World War II. The shop occupies the site of the first Japanese-owned business in Los Angeles, circa 1890's. Pretty cool! I have a soft spot for everything animal shaped and soo.... I picked up a fun/odd felt tiger Christmas ornament, a cat pen, and a super cute bronze cat shaped spoon that hangs on the side of your cup. Did I need it? No.... but it's fun and makes me happy. I had my fur.baby with me in her stroller and was afraid they weren't dog friendly but they were and the 3 ladies in the store welcomed her yapping as I shopped around. They actually loved her! Their genuine customer service made me pull the trigger on a purchase. I came here to this store specifically for these large size emerald back mahjong. I am an avid mahjong player and can play Filipino, Chinese, and Japanese style. It runs very deep in my family (very deep). I own several mahjong sets separate from my family's sets and I personally like the oldskool vintage tiles instead of the new school tiles. And the green backs sold now are solid and not that emerald translucent. I came to check out their mahjong sets here and made a purchase (although I already have 4 sets at home). It came in the typical ugly plastic snake skin case - very typical of Chinatown Mahjong. They still don't feel like the oldskool titles but they look better than the new ones being sold online (I'm not talking about American mahjong tiles either). The tiles aren't painted and more laser painted. The acrylic feels lighter. At the time of visit they didn't have the magenta backs, only green and ivory. The ivory had the numbers but the greens don't. The ivory set looked painted (which I liked) but went with the emerald back because those are harder to find these days. Tile size is 1.5in x 1.1in.

Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K Run/Walk & Bike Ride event a couple weeks ago. My eldest daughter and I dropped in to peruse this place. They had very cute stuffies for the Year of the Horse. I was very tempted to buy one for my brother because he was born in the Year of the Horse. Unfortunately, I didn't get it because none of them resonated with me. Yes, it's an energy thing. I didn't have any interactions with the staff. They were busy attending to other customers. Anyway, it's a fun and intriguing place to walk through. I've seen these types of gimmicky tourist coats before but usually at a much higher price point. For $40 I felt it was worth it. My teen also found some chopsticks they really liked, a few small knick knacks, and a pen. I see that other people have had more negative experiences but we found the people working there to be very kind.
