Great music venue! This place is right on the North Saint Mary's Strip, and has been a longstanding live music place for decades. For the longest time, it was the White Rabbit, but it has been lovingly converted over to the newer generation. It's an open space inside, with a large stage and a bar at the back of the place slinging shots and cheap Lone Star Beer. There's an outdoor seating area that's off and in the shade somewhat, with picnic tables and areas to hang out. The restrooms are large, but kinda dodgy. They're covered (in the men's side) with old concert posters, which is pretty sweet. There's often a food truck on site, where you can take in the grub to here or the Rumble bar that's somewhat attached/affiliated with this place. Rumble has its own Yelp page, so it's worth checking out. Parking can be challenging along the St Mary's Strip, and people in the neighborhood behind this place can be defensive of the spots in front of their homes. It's a cool place to catch a live show, and they're always getting larger acts through there. read more

Came here for a show this past weekend. I had not been since they changed from "the white rabbit" to the paper tiger until Saturday so I was looking forward to seeing some improvements. The new rr's and patio area are pretty nice. Definitely beats that men's corner rr which always seemed to have someone in it. The complaint (which is the same as the white rabbit) is the sound. The first venue off to the right (w/the bar when you walk in) needs to do something about sound insulation. Overall, i did feel like they improved the space a bit, but I do feel it could be better. read more

I went to the electric feels party a couple weeks ago and was charged 22$ for a tequila sunrise. When I asked for it to be refunded they told me I had to go outside to the other bar to handle refunds. So I went out to find someone to help me and this lady went on the kiosk and claimed it was going to be refunded in 2-3 business days and that they had to charge me again for my drink since they cancelled the $22 payment... so I was charged almost $7 for this drink and then so I waited for the pending $22 charge to be refunded but as I see it now I was charged $29 in total for this one drink. I hope this doesn't happen often, and they should refund in cash instead of guests having to wait 2-3 days for a refund IF THEY EVEN GET ONE. now it's just hear say and I can't call PT to reassure my refund bc no one gave me a name or manager to talk to so that I could get my money back for a watered down drink that I was charged a total $29 for... sucks man I might go back for shows at PT but will never order a drink there again. Twas not so long ago that this was once a place called, "The White Rabbit." In its heyday it established us as the metal capital of Texas. Lots of teenage angst amongst backward baseball hat wearers, nu-metal worshippers and 24 band marathon bills. But every season as well as musical scene has a finite time to bask in the sun. So now it is the "Paper Tiger", a new music venue replacing the old that best suits its targeted demographic. I went in anticipation first to see what was done with the space, since big names were attached to this project. And since they were offering a free concert with Roky Erickson. The place basically has the same layout as before. The door entrance is still by the gate, where ID's are checked. The outside area was left unchanged but with the caveat that you can purchase drinks at a small bar.( But I will come back to that point later).The interior has been gutted with the same floor design. The sound board is in the middle, still like before. Garage doors open to the left and you can smoke a stoke in that area. The walls are painted with a dark blue hue and the room is darkly lit. The stage is more prominent now. The pa is booming loudly and there is no escape from the sound. Security in orange shirts survey the club and keep an eye out for any incident but mainly to watch out for belligerent drunks. The vibe reminds me of Emo's in Austin. With plenty of hipsters and Sixth Street hopefuls to be found. My understanding is that the promoters of the Austin fixture "Mohawk's" principally do the booking here. I like the club, the idea of it. The posters on the walls of future shows tells me that it is heading in the right direction. It has the potential to change the musical landscape of our city. For me the promoters and whoever does the booking is the saving grace of this place. Any venue that books the caliber of shows this spot is getting will undoubtedly change our musical scene and above all the way touring bands perceive our city. So why the three stars? Well: 1.) With names like owners of The Monterrey and Barbaro I was expecting a much grander vision. Its missing better lighting and more visuals in the interior. It just seems incomplete. 2.) Areas aren't being utilized to their fullest potential. The left side of the building has a canopy for standing, why not put benches out there as well. 3.) There isn't a bar indoors. I'm not sure if it is in the process of having one made. I'd like to see this place make a bar with at least a small tap selection. The whole serving beers exclusively in cans has gone out with Fred Durst's sagging pants. Having a tap selection adds a sense of class; your audience is more mature now and can handle it. 4.) The sound in your smaller room is way, way too loud! All you really need to do is mic the bass drum and vocals. Dial it down. 5.) They really, really need to separate itself from the whole White Rabbit vibe in a way that says, "We are the Paper Tiger." The whole layout, at least for me still says, "The White Rabbit." Time will tell if it will find its own voice. I think it is a good start, a work in progress. Paper Tiger is exactly what a music venue should be. Small enough, but not too small and still tons of fun. It is an inside/outside venue which almost looks like it used to be an auto shop. They have two bars equipped with iPads, plenty of bartenders, a set drink list, cool murals, the sound is great, bathrooms are clean, plentiful and still have that new paint smell. Did I mention the sound rocks? And George Lewis Jr. totally jumped into the crowd of screaming fans. And took pictures with fans afterwards. Intimacy! That is legit. I was 10 feet from the stage, and I wasn't even trying that hard to be. This venue is exactly what I miss about Austin, how it used to be. Venues like this that I used to frequent are all gone. In fact, I kept saying that I felt like I was in Austin, considering the hip crowd, laid back folks, just outside of downtown with tons of other bars/restaurants to hit up within walking distance. And possibly even a strip club (Hard Bodies anyone?). I want to take this venue back with me to Austin. I am super jelly that SA has such a cool, unpretentious music venue in this old little neighborhood. Ticket pricing was very reasonable, and drink prices were extremely affordable as well, compared to most venues I have been to. The entire place was well taken care of and clean. Parking is easy in the neighborhood without any restrictions. I will gladly drive to San Antonio to see a show here again. I am a fan. read more

The timeless question of wether or not a turd can be polished has finally been answered. Indeed. The renovations are great. The bathrooms are great, the place is "pretty", and the patio area is an actual patio area! I grew up going to shows at the White Rabbit, so in many ways, I may be biased. I do prefer the old, divey place. The worst thing about Paper Tiger is the bar. We are at a national show, it seems like a really good turnout. This band consistently sells out other local venues, so a good turnout should have been expected. There are two bar tenders. We had such a blast here!! Indoor/outdoor covered concert space with reasonably priced drinks for a concert venue. The vibe was very Austin so we felt right at home plus people were a tad bit nicer than we're used to, which was great! Made some friends, danced to The Dandy Warhols, drank lots of booze-- can't complain! I'm docking one star because the sound seemed muffled. I saw this band at an outdoor show before and the sound was better-- dunno if it was a band issue or a venue issue. I think a completely outdoor space would have been superior though, because it gives the sound somewhere to travel. I love this venue and have a ton of respect for the folks who are running it. In a city that's so completely dwarfed by Austin, Paper Tiger brings a much needed hip music joint to the scene. They have two huge bars with cans of great local brews and a full liquor setup too. The wait for a drink is never long. They've upgraded from the temporary port-o-potties to brand new indoor bathrooms. The only thing that's tough about going to a show here is that there's literally about 5 parking spots at the venue. Have no fear though, street parking in the neighborhood is plentiful and is never more than a short walk away. With any luck, Uber will come back to SA soon so this won't even be an issue! I don't know if I have told you all this before but I am far too old to be cool anymore. So, some cooler people might disagree with my rating. First, let me say that the parking in that part of town is horrible. Definitely not Paper Tiger's fault. It just is what it is. We parked down at Candlelight and walked, which honestly wasn't bad. When we arrived, the door people were perfectly nice. The show was supposed to be 90s/early 2000s throwback show. The DJ was horrible (and yes, I know he was a guest from Dallas). I just don't see how you can turn bubble gum pop, grunge, and R&B into a dirty event. Again, I KNOW, this makes me sound old. But I was ALIVE and listening to music during the late 90s and it was nothing like what had been played. On the contrary, the outdoor space is nice but the drinks are overpriced. $6 for a tall boy of Modelo? No thanks. Bartenders were super nice, though, and were having to deal with a lot of people. So, that's the main reason this place gets 2 stars. The bartenders helped this not be a 1-star experience. Mostly clean restrooms and definitely enough stalls for the number of people at the party. read more

Went here for a concert a few months ago. The layout is great and makes it s fun place to catch up with some friends over drinks while enjoying the music. The drinks are reasonably priced and there are plenty of places to sit, stand, lounge and talk. Even when the music got going, there were still lots of places to enjoy it inside the venue and outside. read more

Paper Tiger is bringing great acts to the city, and I love them for that! (I'm SUPER pumped Frightened Rabbit is coming in May!!!!!!!!) When I first moved to SA, I was kinda disappointed that there weren't as many indie acts coming through as I thought, but it seems like Paper Tiger is really stepping it up and bringing tons more acts during this past year. The venue itself is pretty nice; it's not too seedy, and there's plenty of seating, bar areas, stages, and restrooms. We've gone for some regular shows, as well as their Hangover Fest recently, and the place works well for both types of events. Also, a HUGE shoutout to the person at Paper Tiger who was super nice and turned in my phone after I accidentally pre-gamed a bit too hard...and left my phone somewhere in the venue. :) I'm thankful to you, whoever you are!!!!! read more

Pretty cool venue. There's an outdoor bar where you can order drinks and Attaboy burgers. The Attaboy food truck is out back and makes very good burgers and even better fries. There's a nice outdoor atmosphere and tables where you can sit. There's an outdoor stage too. I went to see the Rocket Summer and they played inside. Very awesome concert! There is standing room only but it was cool in there and there were lights along with crazy loud speakers. My ears are still ringing. All in all, it's a pretty cool and intimate place to view a local band. read more

First time coming to the venue since it was changed to the paper tiger and it has definitely changed for the better. Pros: Restrooms have been massively upgraded. When it was the WR the restrooms were disgusting even for a guy. The bar prices are good. 3.50 well and 6.50 for a double. There really isn't a bad view unless you're stuck outside. They added more bench seating in the front area and they have a lot of unused space so maybe they'll put more seating on the side. Cons: Security was a little slow and useless in stopping guys who were drunk and trying to mosh. The lead singer at one point had to specifically call the aggitators out. But no harm no foul. Suggestions: two separate ticket takers for prepaid and at door purchases. Ventilation will still be an issue if you go during the warmer months. read more

This place is awesome! What a great music venue, I've only been here a few times and each time I had a blast. The bar staff will take great care of you if you open a tab. If you need to get away from the loud music there is plenty of space to hang out and chill. The drink prices are reasonable. I met the owners in less than favorable circumstances, and we had a decent conversation, talked out an issue with respect. So they get an A+ from me! read more

Can I just say, thank you? Paper Tiger's staff are so cool. Husband was on the receiving end of a black eye in the moshpit. After initially pulling him out (thinking he had started the fight, rather than just reacting to getting purposefully punched in the face)... I spoke with them, they soon got to the bottom of it... And treated him fairly (someone even brought him ice in a towel). The door guys understandably had to give him the boot (no fighting tolerated). But kindly let him wait at the gate for me until the show was over. At no time did anyone raise their voice or lose their patience. One of the guys even made a point of wishing me a good night on the way out. Much appreciated, this was handled in a very classy way. PT has great sound and a very welcoming atmosphere, hope to catch another show here soon. read more

I went there last night to see Tilian with my girlfriend on August 18th. I want to preface that this was our first VIP concert experience, so I can't compare it to anything else besides word of mouth from other people's experiences. We were instructed via email to arrive at 4:30 PM to check-in before the meet & greet with Tilian at 5:00pm. We arrived early and were told to wait outside of the venue in 100 degree weather with no water or shade. My girlfriend actually walked next door to Rumble to get water for us, which the staff at Rumble didn't mind, and eventually everyone in line was going over to Rumble for water. After about 45 minutes (5:15pm) we were finally ushered in to meet Tilian. We were more or less herded like cattle to give each person an opportunity to take a photo with Tilian (taken by a member of the staff so it was very rushed and you were lucky if you received a semi decent picture). After the photo you returned to the back of the line a second time for autographs; an overall 30 seconds inside the venue before we were kicked back outside to wait. We stood outside again for another 40 minutes until doors opened at 6:00pm. VIP ticket holders were allowed to go in first at least.... 2 minutes before everyone else so if you were at the front of the VIP line you maybe had a head start to get merch, get drinks, and get to the front of the stage. Paper Tiger also doesn't have any sort of VIP seating or standing area, so there's no guarantee you get a great spot for the show. I do not blame the artist or the bands for this. I definitely believe the staff at the venue put little care or thought into the planning of this event. I get it, VIP tickets were not expensive. A regular ticket was about $18 dollars, and a VIP ticket was around $60. However, what we experienced was definitely not worth the ticket price. Now, instead of just complaining, I'll provide some ideas that I believe could have significantly improved the experience, because judging from some of the other reviews (and word of mouth) not much has been done to address these issues: 1. Allow VIP to actually wait inside leading up to the meet & greet (especially when it's that hot outside) to get our passes issued, ID's checked, etc. 2. Allow VIP an early opportunity to purchase merchandise. 3. After doing the meet and greet, DO NOT kick VIP back outside the venue to wait. (Seriously, it's an empty venue and there were only about 25-30 of us) Allow them to walk around the venue, listen to warm ups, order drinks, you know, a VIP Ticket Holder experience. 4. Potentially create a VIP area in the venue - I realize this is probably asking a lot, however, I believe with a VIP pass I should be allowed to have first dibs on seating/positioning for the show. 5. Overall, planning a better meet & greet structure to give fans the opportunity to ask questions, listen to a jam session, or purchase merch early and just hangout, which would have been exponentially better. After all of this, I cannot give anything above a 1-star rating. I will say the show was amazing, despite this, and all of the artists did a fantastic job. read more

Really cool concept. Have inside / half outside. Rustic feel. Standing room only in the concert venue itself but picnic tables ouside..you can hear but not see from there. If you want a good place to stand ( we stood right next to the sound booth that has a shelf in front if it separating it from the actual floor so you are higher up) get there when the doors open unless you are a concert bully and just force your way in. We had a couple folks try that where we were but the sage rockers wearn't foe it and shut them down. It is a mad house exiting because there is only one small exit, hence the four stars. Also parking is an issue. We had to park on the residential Street but what can you do? We had a great time and will go back for sure. You are 50 feet from the stage so that is a WIN! read more

So, thirty minutes later when a girl came out and asked me to give the burger back, i shrugged of course because it had been eaten. And when she whined, "why did you do that?!" One of the best music venues in San Antonio. Great music and never a big line to get in. Please continue to bring good music. My only gripe about this place is the parking. Where do I park? There is no official parking for this place. You have to park behind the bars across the street or on a residential street. I like this place more than white rabbit. It seems cleaner and bigger. They've opened up the walls to watch from outside. They just need to make it a little larger( maybe a 2nd floor) and add some parking. Venues need to be small, limited space means intimacy. A deeper connection with the band and the crowd itself. The Paper Tiger does well to cultivate this experience. 4.25 stars (formerly White Rabbit). I was actually quite impressed with this venue. The stage allows you to get up and close with the artists, the sound system and acoustics are quite good, the drink prices are cheap, and the bathrooms are actually really nice for a concert venue. Most importantly, the musical acts booked are quite significant, including an absolutely stunning performance from the nearly forgotten yet highly influential Detroit based punk band Death just a couple of weeks ago. The tickets said the show started at 7pm, but there was an opening act, so we thought the headliners were going to on around 8. No such luck. The opening act came on at 8:30, followed by the headliners at 9:35. Then, it was standing room only in, as one performer dubbed it, "a musical oven." There was not a direct number we could find to clarify the start time - we tried. Some reviews said there was food. There wasn't, unless you count the food truck outside. After 4 numbers of the headliner, I left sweaty and weary of standing. Went to the the restroom. Wouldn't you know it - There were no paper towels... The only reason for one star is that the music was good. Unfortunately, after arriving at 6:45, in order to get a good seat, (haha), and standing in "the musical oven " for 4 songs, we left, even though the music was great. I definitely got the impression that the owners couldn't give a rat's ass about their customers experience, only their money. read more

I'm consistently let down by the sound mix at the Tiger. The sound person likes to crank the gain way up at the ends of songs so that the mix sounds heavily distorted and muddy. The bare metal roof probably doesn't help much in this regard. There's simply no reason for the mix to be so loud in such a small room, and it hampers my enjoyment of the acts. read more
