I wanted to try this place out before we left the city and I'm sure glad we made the quick walk. They had a special that included a free cup of the Karak milk tea with ginger and cardamom with every purchase so I was excited to try it. We ordered the Crazy for Kaya. The buns are light and fluffy. I wasn't sure what was on the side as I expected the coconut and honey jam to be inside, however, the bun is plain and you add the jam to it. We basically licked the plate clean! The young coconut and honey jam had a soft coconut flavor. It was delicious! The tea was nice and subtle. I love chai tea so I appreciated the cardamom. My husband? Not so much. Definitely check this place out. The shop is bright, clean and cheerful. What a nice way to end out visit in the city! read more

The OG Coffee Caramel Bun is SOOOO GOOD from here. I would recommend coming here just for this! The bun is airy and sweet. Very tasty as a mid-dat treat. Drove by Vancouver on our way back from Whistler and decided to have lunch at Saku. After lunch we were in the mood for some small dessert, so I checked Yelp and found Papparoti right next to Saku! We only got one tiramisù to share among us three, we were too stuffed from lunch to get anything more than that, even if the offerings were quite inviting. The tiramisu was more than decent, considering the average North American tiramisù quality. If I had to be picky I'd say that it was missing the intense aroma of espresso that you would find in any tiramisù you get in Italy. Very good though! read more

Came by to try the OG bun and karak milk tea and enjoyed both! Staff was very friendly and heated up the bun quickly. There were quite a few people hanging out inside mid-morning, and there was plenty of seating throughout -- tables, couches, bar counter, etc. The bun has a nice crispy sweet exterior, but the inside is soft and moist with a bit of butter, so salty sweet if that's your thing. They also have stuffed buns with more fun dessert-like flavors and add ons (there's a whole menu for these). The karak milk tea was great as well, I ordered mine hot, but I imagine it would be a lovely iced dessert drink too. Seems like a busy spot! Stopped by for a snack while walking around Robson and was pleasantly surprised that they had so many variations of roti buns (options included Kaya, Maple, or had accompaniments like ice cream - inside the bun like a sandwich or on top, bananas, or strawberries). We chose the Pistachio Lover which had a chocolate drizzle, slices of orange, and a generous helping of pistachios. I'm torn when it comes to this review because the original papparoti bun is about one of the most delicious things that you could ever eat especially if you like that sweet bread sort of taste. It's a typical coffee shop with crowds that like to lounge and the service is quite speedy and friendly. However, everything else on the menu is quite subpar or even lesser than. I tried the pistachio lover thinking it's going to be this pistachio infused cream in the centre of the bun but it was just straight whipping cream; not sweet and not flavoured. There were huge chunks of pistachio just thrown and scattered all over the plate which made for an awkward eat by fork. It was quite disappointing that the flavour didn't match the menu photo (I didn't take a shot as it wasn't appealing) and going forward I've only ever stuck to the original bun (I devour it too quickly before I have a chance to snap a pic) as it's out of this world. read more

First time trying karak milk tea and the original pappa roti. The karak milk tea tasted AMAZING. Great flavour and it wasn't too sweet which I preferred. If there are any Japanese folks reading this, or if you've been to Japan, it tastes like a REALLY good 午後の紅茶. The pappa roti was subtly sweet and buttery but I did not enjoy it as much it was a bit burnt. It wasn't burned enough to ask for a different one but burned enough that it smelled like slightly overdone popcorn with a bit of bitterness. The bun was good but that took away from my enjoyment of it. I would easily go back for the karak milk tea though. I thought it was great. read more

I got the strawberry fields coffee bun. The plating of it is amazing, half whip cream, half fresh strawberries around the coffee bun which is the center of this master piece. Finished off with pinches of sugar and a drizzle of chocolate. Very nice subtle flavors to it, nothing too strong or overpowering. Also a very cute tea set when you order tea. Comes with glasses, pot of hot water w/ your tea and 3 sets of timers to help you indicate and time how strong you would like your coffee. Got the OG Bun and Hot Chocolate (with Soy Milk). OG coffee bun taste so good I havent had one for so long and this reminds me how much I missed it. Perfectly topped with Caramel Coffee Cream which gives the bun a crispy texture and the very soft and light inside. The hot chocolate tasted good with the soy milk and you can't really taste the soy milk because of the strong chocolate flavour. Love this place so much. Great place to meet up with friends, chill and study, and of course eat their delicious coffee buns (kaya and maple are incredible). The buns themselves are crisp, light, and airy, and have such a rich but not overpowering buttery flavour to them. Worth every penny! I come here whenever I go back to Vancouver. If you go late at night, they sometimes just give out "failed" buns, which are really just perfect puns that are a bit flatter than the batches they sell (albeit this was a couple years ago). read more

That a cute cafe! I was just walking around downtown Vancouver when I found that this place is one where others enjoy. I thought "Let's go check it out!" Best impromptu decision ever. I didn't realize how tasty bread + whipped cream + strawberries could be until I came here. The playing and presentation of the food was so pretty that I almost felt bad messing it up and eating it! I'm not a big coffee lover, but I did enjoy this latte. The cute art on the top was like the icing on the cake! Absolute joy to be in this cafe and decompress/work on my laptop. A few things I love about PappaRoti: + Their coffee and sandwiches. As always, I was drinking an almond milk vanilla latte. I also had the chicken, apple and blue cheese sandwich and it was so delicious. They added some chipotle mayo on the side which paired with the sandwich really nicely. I'd love to try some of their other sandwiches and wrap as well. + The shop is quite big and there are plenty of tables towards the front and the back. + Strong, free wifi. After my lunch date with my friend, I was able to work here for about 2 hours afterwards with no interruptions. + Lots of street parking by the shop. You can either park along Robson where there is paid parking, or along the side streets where I believe it is free. + This place is well known for their buns. I sampled their original which was just butter and cinnamon, which was really good. I decided to get the classic bun (Nutella and banana). To be fully honest, I didn't really like it. The bun itself was super dry and didn't really pair with the Nutella very well. I ended up just eating the banana and Nutella on their own. That might've just been my own experience though. I'd love to try other flavours to find one I really like since I really enjoyed the original. I'm not down Robson too much, but if I'm back in the area I'll make sure to stop by again. read more

I've been trying new coffee shops lately, and PappaRoti stands out to me as one of the most fun I've tried. They've got a ton of unique stuff on offering - their signature buns, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, are a highlight, but from turkish coffee to soft pecan tarts to karak tea, they've got a good amount of distinct offerings that taste very nice. Their standard coffee shop treats, like brownies and mochas, are also excellent - the mochas in particular are among the better ones in town. For food, I most recently tried the bun-focused "Maple Eh?" option, which was one of their crispy buns with ice cream and some chocolate and maple toppings; it was a delicious combination! This location is great too - the staff are super friendly, wifi is free and steady, the location is spacious yet with quite a bit of seating, and the nice cozy-feeling furniture and wide windows makes it a great place to sit down and do some work or chat. Definitely a great little coffee shop! I'll be keeping my eye out for their other locations from now on. read more

I was excited to visit Pappa Roti because I loved the karak I had at Chapati and Karak in London and haven't been able to find it since. I think of karak as chai without the caffeine. I had Pappa Roti's hot version of their karak. I liked it but it wasn't as good as chai. The husband had the iced version. He said it was too sweet. He was kind of right. Staff was unwilling to answer questions and two coffee cakes were too small a business for them. They were unwilling to serve us. The original bun was very good minus the pocket of what I think was supposed to caramel but just taste like salty butter. It has a nice light crunchy coffee flavored topping and the bread inside is soft and fluffy. I paired it with the karak milk tea. As a lover of milk tea, I was very looking forward to trying this tea thinking it would be creamy and rich with a nice spiced flavor but the milk really fell short. Overall it was watery and weak in tea flavor. The pricing also threw me off. While the website indicated the milk and bun combo is $7.50, the in-store price is 9.50. $2 isn't a big deal but feels like false advertising to me...and nobody wants to feel duped read more

Before heading out for some sightseeing for the day, my friend and I dropped in here for a morning coffee and to try their roti bun. We made a good decision. It was about 10 AM when we arrived, so most of the morning rush crowd was already gone at work for the day. We found ourselves some seats inside and made our orders. She ordered a matcha tea latte and original bun, and I ordered a hot karak tea and "Rise and Shine" bun. I can safely say that my order was better. (lol.) The tea reminded me of the "Royal Milk Tea" brand that I grew up drinking. It was a good blend of milk and tea, with neither overpowering the other and not being too sweet. But the bun... My bun included an apricot jam and homemade/local cream cheese. The cream cheese may be the best I've ever had and I am now on a mission to find some to either take back with me to the U.S. or order when I return to Texas. There was a mild tartness to it, which sort of indicates its freshness and how it was made. I never get that taste from my usual Philadelphia Cream Cheese products. And it was extra smooth and creamy... I thought it was mascarpone at first. I still had some leftover when I finished the bun, so what'd I do? Ate the damn cream cheese by itself. (lol.) read more

I don't know if it was the light drizzle of rain on an early morning, or the sweet butteryness of the Roti buns that I got, but something about my visit to PappaRoti was as amazing as it could be. I got the classic Nutella and Banana Roti bun with a Karak milk tea. They put the ingredients on the side of the Roti buns so I ended up getting another bun by itself after devouring my first one. My friend was less enthused about her Peanut Butter and Jelly Roti bun (but she wouldn't let me eat hers so I guess it wasn't as bad as she said it was). Though she didn't enjoy the bun, she really liked the wrap that she also got. My milk tea was perfect for the occasion; it wasn't too sweet for me (but note that I have a sweet tooth so it might be sweeter for most) and flavorful. I would recommend. Overhyped. The buns are fairly unique, with a lightly crispy exterior and warm, fluffy insides. But to serve a single bun with little cups of peanut butter and jelly for over $5? Nah, not impressed. Maybe grabbing the four-pack ($14?!) is the way to go if you really like them, but the upcharges for adding basic condiments is a little ridic. Props for the modern farm house decor and cheery fake flowers at each table, as well as the free wifi. But staff came off as cold and standoffish, not forthcoming about menu info or making recommendations. No greeting is given as you enter, and staff seemed reluctant to take orders. I won a giveaway contest from instagram and was given the opportunity to try out pappa roti for the first time and it was great!! The roti buns are what they're famous for and for good reason. It was so light and fluffy in the middle with a nice crispy crust that flaked off without being too sweet. we were also given two huge scoops of ice cream for our topping which complimented the bun perfectly! Such a delightful treat! We also tried their sandwiches which were nothing special but good. Same with their matcha latte, very faint matcha flavour with minimal latte art. I don't think I want anything added since it would become too sweet for me. I had this kind of bread at Korean/Chinese/Japanese bakeries before, but this brand was the best!!!! Very addicting with lot of butter inside. The drink was great too. I got chocolate espresso and asked to get it blend. It was so good and not too sweet. Paid about $9 for a drink and a bun. Still, it did it's job to warm me up on a very cold Saturday morning. I tried to get my hubby to share a bun with me, but he's completely committed to his intermittent fasting. Came by for one of their signature buns after hearing my friends raving about it. Parking is available on the side streets. Robson, not so much. The inside is classy and upscale. The entire building is new, so this is a given. Nice pale wood and metal decor. Staff are friendly and casual. No complaints there. $3.50 for a single signature bun!? Yikes. And that's just for the bun. No toppings. Things like jam, sauces, fresh fruit, or ice cream are another $1.25 each. The buns look large, but the inside is one giant air pocket. I could probably squish it into a ball with my hands and eat it in one bite. There's a nice coffee and butter taste to the bread, but I have trouble justifying the cost. With that said, the coffee looks more reasonable at $2-4, but I didn't try. The food quality is good, and this place would be good for a date, but unless one has deep pockets, this may not be the most prudent venue for a daily coffee. read more
