iced matcha latte with oat milk and a chance to win a whisked away to japan? okay, avik, you have my attention. stopped into avik a little after 3:00 pm on a tuesday, on my way to an appointment, and the place was packed. not exactly surprising given that this west broadway café has become known for its specialty coffee and tea, house made pastries, and all sorts of creative japanese inspired treats. it's a bright, modern space, and there's a lot going on once you start looking around. i went with the iced matcha latte with oat milk, and it was a solid matcha. smooth, nicely balanced, and definitely enough to satisfy the afternoon matcha craving. avik describes its matcha as a high grade tea offering, alongside hojicha, chai and london fog, so tea clearly gets more than an obligatory spot on the menu. then there's the pastry display. so. many. things. the strawberry matcha cookie immediately caught my eye, but then there was a mochi black sesame croissant and i was basically standing there thinking, wait, what?! the menu leans into those japanese flavours in some really fun ways, and there are enough interesting combinations to make a return visit feel very necessary. the strawberry matcha cookie, for example, combines matcha, dried strawberries, white chocolate and cream cheese. the ordering setup is also very much of the future is now variety. there's a huge tablet for self ordering, plus a sliding freezer case for chocolates and ice cream bars. because apparently a regular pastry case wasn't futuristic enough. and then there was the little bonus dangling in front of me: the chance to win a trip to japan through the whisked away to japan promotion, courtesy of paragon. considering how much i've been thinking about japan lately, that felt like a particularly well timed bit of temptation. i sure could use a trip to japan right about now. between the matcha, the creative pastries, the japanese inspired flavours and the very modern ordering setup, avik is a fun stop when the usual coffee and croissant routine needs a little shaking up. even on a packed tuesday afternoon, there was plenty to catch the eye and plenty of reasons to start planning the next visit. read more

I think it was one of those Cherry Blossom Food Festivals that brought this place to my attention about a year or two ago. Been wanting to try it for awhile and now I finally have. We ordered the following: Tiramisu Latte Caprese Bite London Fog Apple Cookie Cherry Matcha Tonic Tiramisu Sea Salt Caramel Gelato The Cherry Matcha Tonic was pretty but wasn't too crazy about the flavor. I should have just gone with my original gut instinct and chosen a hot beverage like Hojicha Latte or something like that. I was sort of thirsting for something cooler for a change though, and the Cherry Matcha Tonic was the first "cool" drink that caught my eye so I decided to go for it. Won't do that again. Everything else was good though. The Sea Salt Caramel Gelato was the star of the show! In the store there's a sign beneath their gelato section that says "Canadian Gelato Champion". I believe it after tasting the Sea Salt Caramel! They had Nama Chocolates too. I was tempted to get some but...only so much a person's wallet and waistline can handle at one time. Will try the Nama Chocolate some other time. You can order in person here, or you can place an "Express" order at the Kiosk. We tried both ways of ordering. Ordered at the counter first and then after finished my Cherry Matcha Tonic decided I wanted to try the Sea Salt Gelato so then tried ordering that from the Kiosk. Wow, a new cafe in the neighbourhood. This coffee shop caught my attention for its beautiful aesthetic and it's even open till 10pm. I could tell even from outside that it's a popular work and study type of coffee shop with your free wifi and outlets. I hope this post doesn't give it away and make it way too crowded for me to find a seat next time. There's a steady flow of people visiting the stores while I was there on a weekday between late afternoon and early evening but there's always extra seat for anyone new looking for a desk to work or chat with friends. A few could be better are the pricing and temperature. They offer free oat milk substitute and -$0.35 for bringing your own cup but no more employee discount. And it was so cold in there, I could see a lot of people kept their winter jackets on, I don't think it's a heating issue but the constant windy seems to suggest the AC is on rather than the heater, oh wells Im out of there now. For that reason, unless I'm bundled up, it'll be a hard sale to be back again! I got a hojicha latte and it as pretty good, perfect sweetness and temperature for my cold with no ice. I love Avik! Came here to get some work done with my coworker. We were there for a good 4hrs. The cafe has wifi and charging points so it's a great place to get work done. I tried their beef bulgogi sandwich for the first time, it was really good! Also got their strawberry matcha cookie which was good but I thought it was a bit too sweet for my liking. Their jasmine matcha cookie remains my favourite! I also tried their matcha cheesecake which was really good! Not too sweet, the perfect amount of :) I would recommend coming here if you want good food, drinks, and a lively space to get work done! Also their service is always amazing! Tried all their fall fest items and loved it!! Tiramisu latte $7.50: loved dipping the lady finger in the drink, and the marscapone cream top went soooo well with the latte!! Banana bread matcha latte $8.50: the banana bread flavour is so incredibly strong!! Never thought this pairing would work and it was so unique! I've heard many good reviews about AVIK so when I finally got to visit it, I was excited to try their menu items! To my surprise, there were many Asian-inspired flavors; I got their beef bulgogi sandwich, black sesame mochi croissant and strawberry matcha cookie to try. The sandwich was so good (it was a mix of sweet and savory) and the croissant was FILLED with mochi. The cookie was a bit too sweet for me but I'm not a big dessert eater! Everything came out to be around $20+ dollars so I think if you're wanting to get some work/studying done AND get a meal, then this cafe is perfect. I LOVE AVIK, opens 7am early to late 10pm. clean + quiet ambiance. kind staff, very communicating and outgoing. great prices. anything pistachio creme is usually $8-$10 but this crossaint was $5.25!! maybe better if heated up but very nutty, slightly filled sliver of creme. average crossaint the matcha jasmine cookie ($3.25) was highly rec on yelp and ITS THE BEST!! not grassy/over baked flavor like most matcha desserts. it's light, milky, with a blend of butter and floral jasmine. unique cookie!! i was VERY DISAPPOINTED in the dubai choc cookie. priciest. not crispy, chewy, or soft cookie. the bottom was like a bed of pressed pistachios. the crispy kataifi + pistachio filling was small and NOT CRISPY and made everything a soggy experience. was so excited for this. This is one of my favourite cafes when I'm in the area. Delicious freshly made food options that have comfortable seating and big windows. The service isn't the fastest but I'm never in a rush. The provide free wifi and everyone seems to be mindful of each other so you are left to enjoy your food or drink in peace or work quietly. read more

4.5/5 stars if half points are available. The food was a little more expensive for the quality of it, but overall, both the drinks and food were quite decent. It's also maybe because I went at the end of the day, so it makes a difference in the quality of their food? The sandwich I got was so flakey and flavourful, but it was so flimsy and messy to eat. The matcha latte I got was decent, though not much matcha flavour. I also got a pistachio gelato-- one that they recommended as hrs made from real pistachio so it doesn't have the artificial taste. First few bites were delicious. Strong pistachio aroma and very creamy. However, it was just too rich for me as I kept eating. There are an abundance of seats and open space! Plugs are available if you want to charge your laptops or phone. My favourite part about this visit is how lovely and kind everyone there was. Even if the food was 100/10, poor service means nothing. I visited Avik to get the limited special items for the NomsMag Cherry Blossom Festival. They offer Iced Matcha Berry Einspanner, featuring the finest ceremonial matcha from Shizuoka. Topped with their signature Berry Einspanner Cream. Sakura Tiramisu layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers with fresh mascarpone cream. Finished with a gentle dusting of sakura powder, this dessert offers a subtle floral aroma . The Sakura Tiramisu featured a rich and creamy mascarpone layer, nicely matched with espresso-soaked ladyfingers, which were so delicious. The Matcha Berry Einspanner had a smooth texture and was not too sweet. I especially loved the Berry Einspanner cream--it paired good with the creamy tiramisu, making for a perfect combination. My first visit to Avik with my Coffee Buddy for the Hot Chocolate festival. It was a busy early afternoon with a quick moving line out the door. The space is nice and simple though we had trouble seeing the menu until we reached the cashier. The Hojicha Secret Romance was sold out and I was a bit hesitant to go with the Death by Chocolate as I tend to shy away from sweeter options. In any case, it turned out to be a great choice. We managed to snag seats to enjoy our Death by Chocolate $11.95: a rich balanced dark hot chocolate, with a delicious vegan gelato (give me more!) and dark chocolate buttery pastry. Smooth and decadent. I was more than happy to see oat milk does not carry an additional charge and Avik has an app to order ahead! We will be back to try their other drinks and pastries. read more

New cafe along Broadway - plenty of metered parking scattered about. Transit friendly - Cafe is very nicely lit, very bright and clean - probably a great place to study and get some work done. Personally, I felt the menu boards looked very plain and didn't stand out - i think they could add some color to have it match up with the bright environment. Hojicha latte was super delicious - and loved that they asked if i wanted to sub for oat milk - as sometimes i forget , and regret it later lol. The matcha cream puff - the cream was nice - not too sweet, and just the right matcha kick - however i found the puff itself , dry and tough - possibly been sitting around for too long? - Pistachio cookie - was very nutty, but leaning towards dry - but it's apparently one of there signatures .. - Will probably visit again - if I'm in the area - read more

I went to this cafe several times to study and was able to try a few different things since they were having a promo for students in the first half of December Since they recently opened, I think they're still adjusting their menu since I saw some items had been renamed/changed slightly when I went back again. I really enjoyed their hojicha -- both the hot and iced version, it had a deep roasted flavour and was super delicious (at around $6, I found the quality to be quite good!). Would like to try their matcha next time. Their matcha basque cheesecake had more of a jasmine flavour but was still quite delicious. Unfortunately, the gelato serving was a bit much for me (I'd recommend sharing) since it was very decadent -- I ended up taking it home and making a hot chocolate out of it Overall, this is a great spot to study with lots of lighting and outlets (they're open 6am-11pm iirc) or to go to with friends! The cafe itself is brightly lit and has lots of 2-person tables along with free wifi. I came on a weekday evening and it was half people on their laptops and half people chatting to one another but I could see it being a popular spot during the day/weekends since it's so close to the Broadway City Hall skytrain station. I had come with a friend to try the gelato since I knew that maestro James hand makes all of them (former owner of Bella Gelateria!) and we weren't disappointed! The staff working behind the counter was super nice and allowed us to try some flavours before choosing - all of which were phenomenal. Outside of gelato they have a large selection of pastries and sandwiches that all looked delicious! We shared a mini basque cheesecake and while it wasn't the best one I've ever had it was still quite good so I would definitely come back to try another pastry item / drink. I have now been here twice since their opening and I definitely plan on being back. I really like the look of lots of stuff on their menu. There are several vegetarian options. Vegan options are limited but the stuff they have is good. Both of the food items I tried on my first visit are no longer being offered so I won't review them. The last time I visited I got the mushroom avocado ciabatta sandwich and a matcha jasmine cookie to eat. The sandwich was tasty but really messy. The cookie was amazing; it was very soft, which is my favourite kind of cookie, and the tea flavour was very strong. I had tea both times that I visited. They only have 3 types of loose leaf tea, but it seems that they are committed to offering a great experience with the tea, because the tea itself seems to be high quality and they actually steep it for you so you get a perfectly brewed cup. The environment is modern and bright with lots of seating. Baristas are friendly. They're open early and late every day which is awesome. read more

Stopped by AVIK Cafe for their Cherry Blossom Food Festival specials, and it was such a beautiful and tasty experience! I tried their Cherry Blossom Set ($12.80), served on a bamboo tray, and it included: Iced Matcha Berry Einspanner: Made with top-quality Ceremonial Matcha from Shizuoka, whisked to a smooth finish and topped with a luscious strawberry Einspanner cream. It was the perfect balance of earthy and sweet! Sakura Tiramisu: Light and creamy layers of mascarpone and espresso-soaked ladyfingers, finished with Sakura powder. It was soft, airy, and just melted in my mouth. I also grabbed a few goodies to go: Pistachio Tiramisu, Mango Hojicha (Decaf), Original Cheesecake, and a Chicken Pie--each one fresh and delicious! The staff were super friendly and made sure I had a great experience. If you're into seasonal treats and matcha-based drinks, AVIK Cafe is a must-visit. Really appreciated the kindness, patience and friendliness from the staff at this new cafe. Their hospitality and attention to pleasing the customer is what makes this cafe a repeat visit for me! We tried a nice assortment of items including a hojicha latte, flat white and their pour over which were all expertly made, not too sweet and had a very nice coffee or tea flavour. Our other favourite was their savory turkey and onion sandwich on housemade sourdough. All the flavours fit together so well and we couldn't stop raving about it! We tried two of their desserts including the tiramisu, which ate more like a custard and wasnt very strong in coffee or alcohol flavour (and we later learned it is so that it can be enjoyed by kids and expectant mothers) and the matcha basque cheesecake which had less of a matcha flavour and more of a jasmine tea flavour. Finally, the gelato made by James gave a nice sweet and creamy finish to our time at Avik. The black cherry with chocolate shards was so smooth and airy while the pistachio and hazelnut had a great nutty flavour. The scoops that were given were HUGE and we had trouble finishing! Overall, this cafe is definitely one to add to your list! Beautiful space, lots of room for students or those meeting up for a coffee date! When we provided the feedback of what we tasted, the staff were extremely receptive and genuinely wanted to bring the best for visitors.
