Big fan of this spot. The lunch specials are out of this world, for real. for $10, I got a super authentic, amazing tamarind juice, homemade (too good, too fresh), a fat fat plate of red beans and yellow rice, and two big pieces of marinated, tender, sauced up chicken breast. Service was fast, and the dude who runs the place was super nice. I'm a super white dude, and my girlfriend is spanish, and fluent, so he was loving how much of a gringo I was. After agonizing over reviews and finally having to flip a coin to order from here (sorry Angry Deekin), I am happy to say that I was not let down. I just moved from NYC so I was missing my Dominican food. I think this will be a new go-to. We got the chicharron de pollo sin hueso w/ sweet plantains, fried plantains, beef patty, and bbq ribs. The portions were more than enough for two people and it looks like 2-3 more meals can be made from the leftovers. And w/ uberEATS I got the food within the 30-40 minute frame. The chicharron was freshly made, not too juicy/wet and was not soggy. There also wasn't any of what my family calls "funny business" which can be gristle, cartilage, bone, arteries or veins. This was just nice chicken (maybe breast only) cut into bite sized pieces and fried perfectly. The sweet plantains went with the chicken amazingly! They were sweet, but not too sweet, and melted in our mouths. 10/10 Fried plantains were also great, not dried out and still moist and dense. They were freshly made as well. 10/10 Beef patties were excellent. The meat was loose (not like Jamaican patties) and seasoned well. The crust was crisp and light. On the inside, the crust was almost like phyllo dough - it was still light, but had a bit of density and doughy-ness bc it had soaked up some of the moisture from the filling. Again, no funny business in the meat for my teeth to bounce off. I only had one bc the rest were eaten before I could get to them lol but I will definitely reorder. 10/10 The only reason this place is getting 4/5 (but closer to 4.8) is bc of those bbq ribs! The reviews I saw mentioned that they were good so, of course, I ordered them. Unfortunately, mine were basically just streamed spare ribs with bbq sauce poured over them. Literally poured. They didn't even shake the ribs around a little in the sauce. And the meat itself was not seasoned, fat wasn't rendered... now, I am from the south and I am Jamaican. This is not a case of expecting Jamaican or southern ribs and instead getting a Dominican/Latin version and being upset about it... no, these ribs were just not done well. It is a shame bc I was really looking forward to them and everything else was so good! Ribs get a 6/10, the 6 for large portion size and the bbq sauce wasn't bad, the ribs weren't bad either once you doctor them up and get that sauce coating right, I just know that they could have done them better in the first place especially considering how wonderful the rest of the meal was... and other photos of their bbq ribs that I've seen.... I totally recommend this place but quality does seem based on when your order (mine was Sunday at ~6pm) and, I'm guessing, who is heading the kitchen that night/day. I think all the reviews are right and that this place CAN be hit or miss and maybe I ordered on the tail end missing... Hopefully they redeem themselves to some past reviewers and start a new trend of good reviews. I WILL order from them again! Side note: I hope they make their online menu more descriptive! Wonderful owner, wonderful server, great environment---(imagine florida, cuba, or even the DR)---that's the feeling the surrounding incites. Families, groups of friends, couples all enjoy yummy food here. Food is not spicy or too strong; mild and excellent. Plantains are a must---absolutely delicious and chicken stew is highly recommended. Chicken stew is tomato-based, not spicy and enormous side portions, yellow rice, and beans are available red and black. A fellow diner who ordered Mofongo claimed she wanted to sleep in it and eat as needed. So Mofongo is a must, it seems. Free parking is a plus and the restaurant has a nice little outdoor patio. Went here on a Saturday night before a show at UA. Fast and courteous service. It's BYOB which is fantastic. Their portion sizes are plentiful and prices are cheap. We had the pork mofongo, half chicken plate with yellow rice and black beans, a chicken patty, and tres leche to go. I highly recommend trying mofongo and their chicken plate. They were perfect. Ok I'm fully Dominican. I know how an order of Dominican mangu con los tres gulpes should look. I got one salami, one cheese, and i swear to you it look like one and a half scoop of mangu...and it cost 6.50 with tax... then we got a mori soñando and i guess that drink cost $5 because our total was $11. At that The mangu was extra oily. I don't know if they think that the location they are at which is near center city that they think the could rip anyone else off with high prices for bullshit food but not when it comes to a true Dominican like me! Luckily it wasn't me that ordered it it was my bf who isn't Dominican so he didn't know lol he was around and was hungry and i had to work and couldn't make what he was craving. That's very sad my own kind smh NEVER AGAIN! They are expensive for no reason! You Are better off going to the hood spots that sell Dominican food. I love Dominican food and was excited to discover this affordable Dominican restaurant on 12th and Callowhill. Friendly staff made for a good start but the lack of air conditioning made for a stifling and uncomfortable meal. There were a variety of dishes to choose from. I had the tres gulpes and was underwhelmed. The fried cheese and salami were good but the base of the meal was mushy and not flavorful. My friend had the Tilapia which came out black. I did;t ask her how it tasted but it looked severely If I were to go back again I would order the chicken lunch special - half a chicken with rice and beans for $7.50. After reading the reviews, I had very high hopes for this place. I was not disappointed. The interior is very warm and comfortable. The owner and staff were very helpful, nice and attentive (but not annoyingly so). The food, though. It was so so good. Not spicy, but very tender and flavorful. There was hot sauce on the table to add some spice. I had the stewed goat, stewed beef, rice and peas and fried sweet plantains. Nothing was my awesome. The portions were big, too. My gf and I stumbled upon this place randomly while walking back to our car after attending the Philly Auto Show. The menu is extensive, and they have a number of ready-made dishes at the front for quick-eating or take-out. The staff is very courteous and friendly, including the owner, although the service was a little slow. We ordered the half-chicken with rice and beans, and a few pastelitos de res: the chicken, and the rice and beans were very tasty; the pastelitos were a tad aggressively seasoned, but still good. The prices for lunch run between $5-10, and for dinner anywhere from $7.95- 25.00. They are a BYOB, and they have a decent selection of batidos and aguas frescas. I've been going here since they opened. I've only tried a handful of items because they are so good I can't get away from them. Almost all of the reviews are positive and have the same thing in common-great food for a good price! Also the few negative reviews have something in common as well-delivery service. I never liked the Center City delivery services so I'm not surprised and hopefully it's something that the owner, who is always there, will fix. The pork is seasoned perfectly and falls off the bone as well as the chicken available as a half or stewed is delicious. They have a GIANT menu which I usually think is a waste because most restaurants can't handle it and do few things well but they are the exception. I'm going to have to start exploring the rest of the menu but it's hard to give up a sure thing. read more

We were looking for something Hispanic after a trip to TJUH for a test. At first we were going to go to another spot up on N. 5th St., but the guy who answered the phone had an attitude. So this popped up on Yelp in a really unlikely neighborhood. People charitably call it the loft neighborhood, but I'm old enough to remember it for what it was, an extension pretty much of skid row. People saying that this is real-deal Dominican comida criolla aren't kidding. This is just like it is in so many places up in The City in the Washington Heights 'hood. Up there it would be above average, which means for Philly that it's an absolute gem. The staff were friendly, as was the owner, and perfectly comfortable speaking Spanish with a non-native, which isn't always the case. The wife had mofongo de cerdo, and I had rabo guisado with yellow rice, red beans, and a side of maduros. We spent $32 and left with enough leftovers for another meal-and-a-half. Her mofongo was as good as I've ever had it anywhere, and I mean anywhere. The only fly in the ointment is that they weren't running the AC on the first day of July, but it's a burden that a nice glass of morir soñando could easily lighten. We'll be inventing stupid reasons to bypass Chinatown and N. 5th St., I think, let alone the jaunt into Philly from the 'burbs. read more

The SO found this place while staying up in Philly for a workshop. She went a few times during that week and the whole fam tried it out the day we came to pick her up. Don't let the humble appearance of this little hole in the wall fool you. The Dominican food was fantastic. We had the chicken, rice, beans, and plantains. Yeah, it sounds pretty non-descript, but it was great. Very succulent, very good. Everybody left happy! If you happen to be nearby you should definitely give them a try. This is the only Dominican place in all of this part of Philadelphia - so you know I was gonna try it. The place itself is super cute and gives a very "traditional" feel. The food is okay - not like the best but worth repeating. The drinks I didn't like. I had two different kinds and idk they didn't taste that great. It seemed a little understaffed because the girl was sweet but she was juggling a lot and we never got our bill and had to end up going to register to pay for it. Would I go back ? Yes. It seems that it runs mostly on delivery orders, they had only one person for taking orders, serve the food, and bring the food to the table. Yum!!! Went here last week with a few friends, 5 of us total. I wasn't really sure how we were supposed to go about ordering, since in front they have a type of cafeteria set up. We were greeted by Jose and the very pleasant woman working the counter. They were great about accommodating us as "sit down" diners even though I don't think this is the general premise of the restaurant (my friend who picked the restaurant didn't do their research as to what type of set up it was). Anyway, onto the food... We ordered a bunch of different things to share and I can honestly say that everything was great- from the ceviche, to the plantains, to the grilled pork. The chicken and rice was my favorite- so flavorful and moist, unlike some other rice dishes I've tried. I was pretty bummed they didn't have the fried pork chunks- I haven't been able to find good ones since moving back from Miami. I was salivating at the thought of them...I guess I have to go back! Prices are super reasonable as mentioned. Oh, and the tres leches cake...nom nom nom nom! In the midst of all our gorging, we got to talk a little bit with Jose, who turned out to be the owner. He told us that he had had a restaurant in New York but had moved it to Philly. I'm so glad he did. I cannot say enough how gracious he and what appeared to be his only other staff member were at accommodating our awkwardness. Came here randomly after a few drinks with a friend. The owner dealt with us most of the time. He's an awesome guy. Shot the breeze with him, ate some Chicharron, rice, beans, and an "Owner's Special" batido. Quite tasty. This place seems to take significant pride in everything they do and you can really taste it. I noticed this establishment is categorized specifically as "Dominican" by Yelp while it seems that most similar places in Philly are listed as "Carribean" or "Latin". It's located in quickly gentrifying 'hood just north of the freeway. I had the goat stew lunch and the octopus salad as an appetizer. The goat was great, done in a simple homemade style. Not too tough, gamey or spicy. Bony, yes, but that's just how goat dishes are. The bones add a lot of flavor to the stew. I love one of the recent comments about there being too much "starch" and "rice / beans". Guess what? Most people in the world, especially in an impoverished nation like the DR, can't afford meat on a regular basis. So a good amount of rice and beans is definitely an authentic and appropriate addition to a Dominican meal. Better yet, Parada's rice and beans were perfectly cooked and incredibly delicious. I love it that they give you a choice of black or red beans. The food is very affordable here and the service is great. Good beverage selection. My only reservation is the somewhat dingy interior. Came here for take-out lunch during my internship today. The place gives you a nice tropical feel with all the plants and decor. There was an array of food to choose from but, I went with bistec con cebolla (steak and onions) with white rice and black beans. The food is delicious and as a fellow Dominican, you can tell they make their marinade (sofrito) from scratch. The only thing I was not very happy about is that they didn't take their time with browning the steak and caramelizing the onions. Since it was made to order the steak was not given justice and was not browned at all or cooked thoroughly. I understand not having a long wait time but for good food, it's worth it. Next time I'd simply ask for them to do so. Other than that the flavor is great. For the portion I was given, the cost of the food is super cheap. My order was $12 and can easily feed 2-3 people. Right on the edge of Center City Philadelphia is a bright and cheery Dominican restaurant called Parada Maimon. This is def a good place to know about as it serves down-home Dominican food in addition to breakfasts and items like Philly cheesesteaks at incredibly low prices. Everyone is friendly here and the food is tasty. Their lunch specials served all day are amazing. I recently enjoyed the oxtail platter which came with yellow rice, salad, black beans, and sweet plantains for less than $7. Wow! But you def have to add one or more of their pastelitos. The chicken one was yummy. There Is a cool atmosphere with lots of rustic wood here and even an outdoor eating area. And did I mention free Wifi? There are a few free parking spots to the side of the building or if you come by foot you are two minutes walk from Chinatown or the Reading Terminal Market. This Dominican spot is delicious in every sense of the word. The food, the ambiance, the hospitality is all excellent. They have awesome lunch special prices for an enormous amount of food. Tons of different options. I love that they have food ready to go if you're in a rush or a bunch of other options the kitchen can make if you want to sit down and have a feast. You can bring your own alcohol and have a fiesta! I really love this place :) They also deliver which is awesome. This is a zero rate restaurant. I went to this place on Sunday May 29 with my family. We had a big disappointment. The food is really gross. My husband had rice and ribs wich the meat turn to be at least 2 days old. I saw a octopus salad in the display that had bacteria grow in it( I know what I saw I wok in the lab).
