I was at Paradigm this morning, as I have been every Monday morning for the last 13+ months, and I found myself reading a flyer on the wall. I couldn't help but notice the tagline under the logo: "Train like it matters." Maybe I've seen it before, maybe I haven't. But today, I did more than notice it. I felt it. Over the past year, I've been training on the sidelines of the 6am group classes and the 7am small group classes, and I've watched an entire ecosystem unfold. One full of camaraderie, support, friendship, encouragement -- and most importantly -- community. I do not take reviewing gyms, fitness centers, or instructors lightly. Fitness is a lifestyle that requires consistency, dedication, and follow through. Not because you have to. But because you want to. What does that really mean? It means you need to show up. Not once. Not twice. Regularly. And that's it. That's the recipe for success. Just show up. On a regular basis. And the rest will naturally unfold. But do you know what's even better? Is that Paradigm has created the exact community that allows you to not only show up. But to thrive. What Joey Wolfe has built at Paradigm is unparalleled. The workouts are carefully crafted, challenging, and engaging. I could author an entire book about my coaching experience with Jeff and the confidence it has given me in every facet of my life, but alas, I will focus back on the community at Paradigm. So even though I've been on the sidelines lifting really heavy $h!t with Jeff, I've also incorporated my way into the community within Paradigm classes; meeting new people, creating new connections, and cheering people on -- especially women who nailed their first pull up, then their second, then their third -- and knowing that's just the start. This past weekend I participated in the Paradigm Sport Commitment day event. The event started with a free workout to which anyone was invited (current/past member or otherwise). There were upwards of 45 participants in this class and it couldn't have gone any smoother! The coaches had everything so clearly organized and set up that there was no confusion from anyone on instructions, movements, form, etc. Class moved with smooth transitions, and the stations were easily progressed and regressed per the individual's needs. The coaches never stopped moving around us and making sure everyone was moving properly, and when appropriate, pushing themselves. Even as a fitness coach myself, I can get intimidated and overwhelmed being a participant in such a large scale class, but that was never the case at any point in time. I ended up pushing myself quite hard and had a great time doing so! Paradigm is far and above the best facility with the best staff in the Santa Cruz County. Joey runs a tight ship which makes Paradigm truly the best functional training gym i can find in santa cruz. group classes are awesome and i've done some one-on-one training as well - good for perfecting form. pictures don't really do it justice - the inside has a perfect set up with full on sprint rug and a buncha functional equipment. and we use the parking lot for some exercises and training as well. super cool place and definitely worth it. heard Joey does some amazing stuff with elite athletes as well (pro baseball players, etc.). read more

My son did one of the free baseball camps that Paradigm put on this last weekend and WOW! What an amazing group of coaches and people. Joey is incredibly friendly and talented and my son had an absolute great time. I was blown away at the number of volunteers they had that came to help 70ish learn new drills and techniques and was very impressed at how it was coordinated. Incredible trainers, perfect facility. Joey and Aaron both take the time to learn the individual goals of each person they train, and are able to tailor sessions to those goals. They both know and understand how to motivate and how to push their pupils the exact right amount, which ends up making for a challenging and rewarding workout that isn't to excess (a la Crossfit). Since you know that they understand your goals and care about you on a personal level, it puts purpose behind the moves and workouts they ask you to do, which makes for a much more rewarding experience than other group classes I've done. The facility itself is top notch, I can't think of any ways I'd improve it. I legitimately look forward to working out in their space. I consider myself an athlete and live a very active lifestyle (tennis, running, road biking, soccer, volleyball, etc.). My routine had gotten stale and Paradigm came into my life at the perfect time. I thought that I was in pretty good shape before, but the broader spectrum of exercises and stretches that Paradigm has introduced me to are making me re-evaluate what I thought "in shape" really means. I once had a t-shirt with this phrase printed on it: "To be old and wise you must first be young and stupid." The irony of wearing that shirt in my early twenties was lost on me then. As a Division I athlete I was laser-focused on raising my game and protecting my starting position at any cost. Twenty years later. I'm still motivated to realize and push my potential but for different reasons. I specifically chose Paradigm because we don't rise to the levels of our hopes, but fall to the level of our training. I train hard but I train smart -- with smart coaches. My health is my priority now. Keeping my body moving, recovering and strong is empowering. I've come to achieve strength goals in my forties that I couldn't pull off even in my twenties thanks to the science-based and fun programming at Paradigm. There's no "bro" attitude there. All walks of life walk through the doors to achieve their best selves with lasting, sustainable results. A great respite from the groupthink CrossFit mentality (and fatigue/injury). read more

I have been working out with Joey in the group classes for the past 3 months at least 4 times a week and the results are amazing! I was never much of a gym person, but these classes are an hour long and the most efficient workout I ever had. No class is like the other, Joey always comes up with new exercises, so you never know, what to expect and you get challenged every day. He is very good at adjusting the workout according each person's abilities and is very careful in making sure that any old injuries/problems are being addressed. Our 10 year-old son has been a baseball student at Paradigm for almost a year. He's had a number of private lessons which have had a tremendous impact on his abilities and understanding of the game. He's worked with three different instructors, all of whom have had professional baseball experience, and I've been consistently impressed with their knowledge, patience, and support. I LOVE Joey's beach boot camps! I did about five of them last summer and the intense exercises, beautiful location and positive energy of the group kept me coming back. Joey made working out fun and he pushed me to do what I could do and then past that. I really liked that he mixed it up every time so that I never got bored or did the same thing over and over. It also helped that he is a super positive motivator (because boot camps are not easy!!). Can't wait to do some more this spring and summer! I normally would have been intimidated by a place like this, but their Groupon was too good to resist. I've now been 20 times and I am a big fan. They've really brought the athlete back out of me, despite being in my 40s and having 2 little kids. Their trainers are the most precise and qualified I've come across, and every time I learn something new. I'm prone to injury because of a tilted pelvis, but I never once hurt myself in their classes, despite doing lots of crazy maneuvers. (I've been to a similar set up at Santa Cruz Core and injured myself 3 times there.) The gym is bright, spacious, and clean and perfectly suited for its purpose. Everyone is supportive and there's a great sense of camaraderie. I love that I never need to book ahead. read more

The best workout in 60 minutes you'll get that's SAFE. This is as high intensity as other crossfit type gyms but safety is very important too. Expect a great range in body movement workouts that leave you feeling great. read more

Excellent. The group classes are challenging, and the instructors emphasized good form. Both Aaron and Joey are incredible motivators, and they have created a gym with an excellent culture. The people are friendly, and everyone pushes each other. I'm new to gyms, and I am learning a tremendous amount about myself, my limits, and my fitness goals. I'm getting stronger and faster, and I'm setting an excellent foundation to make a habit out of regular (and rigorous) exercise. I look forward to coming here, and I feel incredible when I leave. My son has been training baseball weekly at Paradigm for about two years. Joey, Kevin and Bobby are all amazing coaches. All three coaches use our hour time slot very efficiently and always make sure my son spends time on catching, throwing, pitching and hitting. All three coaches are careful not to contradict what my son is learning from his team coaches. Rather, they listen to what my son has learned elsewhere and explain the value in that particular instruction. All three coaches are extremely patient and their knowledge and skills are undeniable. My daughters kept bugging me to come work out at Paradigm Sport with them because they loved it so much although I am not typically a fan of stuffy, crowded, impersonal gyms, I thought I should give it a try just to shut them up. To my surprise I'm still going! Yep, the "gym avoider" is still going to the "gym". The thing that keeps me coming back to Paradigm Sport are the excellent group classes that qualified, enthusiastic coaches run. These classes are fun because the coaches change the programs around each week to keep things interesting so you don't have to worry about getting stuck in the stale, repetitive exercise loop. Another thing that I like is you get to know people that are coming every week so it's a very social and supportive atmosphere. The building that the gym is in has a wear house feel to it with high ceilings and lots of fresh air coming through the front and back doors (some of the exercises are performed outside, which is great!). No stuffyness here. Joey, the owner keeps the facility spotless and is very personable with each member that comes in. I am loving my time at Paradigm Sport. I am not a super active person, but I knew it was time to really get fit, reduce stress from my job, and most importantly, get healthy. I live in Aptos and work in Salinas, but Paradigm is definitely worth the drive to Santa Cruz. The facilities are top notch and very well maintained. The front desk and training staff are so friendly-everyone knows the clients by name, and they always seem to remember small details about their clients and plans they have mentioned, which is super cool. I have a bad shoulder, and the trainers are always there to make sure my shoulder is doing well and have a regression prepared if necessary. They are motivating, helpful, and very well versed in body mechanics, making every workout safe and effective. I feel I have poor motor planning, so I don't always get the movements correct right away. However, I never feel rushed or bad about taking the extra time to do the movement correctly, because the trainers are on task, but willing to accommodate and very helpful with cueing. I definitely recommend Paradigm to athletes, youth, active and less active regular population, and anyone looking to make a healthy lifestyle change and get involved in fitness in a motivating environment! read more
