Sorry... I've done the helicopter tour in Kauai and thought it was just simply amazing. They had nice music to compliment the ride but would pause if our tour guide wanted to share something with us. We got up close and personal and it was just all around the most amazing thing I have done. It was breathtaking! This helicopter ride was okay..I thought the first part was a tad of a waste..we flew over old magma...but for 15-20 min? I just kind of wanted to get to see actual lava. The waterfalls shown were from a distance so don't be too disappointed because you won't be seeing them up close. I actually saw rainbow falls just prior to this helicopter tour so seeing it up in air does not do it justice. I understand it's a different island all together and there were some cool things on the ride but just wish there were more things to see. All in all, tour guide was sweet but for the price it just didn't add up...maybe because my ride in Kauai was just spectacular and I have something to compare it to. I am not too sure but I wasn't taken away. Also your hair is a mess after using a open door helicopter lol so you got to put it in a braid neatly or tie it back completely so it's not flying all over. They mention to bring a hair tie but seriously tie it and make sure it's secure. My hair was in knots coming out. read more

This was the most expected activity before our big island vacation. However, it turns out to be the biggest disappointment. I booked the door-off tour for two person 1 month ago and in order to guarantee the window seats I paid extra $25 each. Everything seems to be fine, but when I landed on the big island, I got a voice mail from the staff, so I called back and the staff told me that they couldn't give us the guaranteed seats. They offered us the option to change to the next day but we have to arrive at 7:45 am. That would mess up our plan, but it's the christmas and all other helicopter tours are probably booked already, so I agreed although was pretty annoyed because they only told us the last minute, which didn't give us much freedom to accommodate the change. More disappointing thing happened when we arrived at the site on the rescheduled day. The staff told us that they had three helicopters and two of them were under maintenance. So 2/3 of the travelers couldn't get on the helicopters and we were unfortunately part of them. There were another poor group of people flied from another island just to take this tour. But now it was all canceled. I understood the maintenance is for the safety sake. However, what really annoys me is the company didn't tell us that we can't get the guaranteed seats in the first place, although we had paid the extra dollar, we booked it 1 month beforehand and we have provided the weight information. The company already has enough information and should have told us much earlier that we could not get the guaranteed seats. This company has a beautiful website and their helicopters also look advanced. But my poor experience tells me that this company lacks the experience of operating the business. 1. They don't promptly tell the customers about the seat allocation change although they charge additional money for the guaranteed seating. If you can't provide this type of service, please just don't put it on your website, which gives us the wrong expectation. 2. Two out of the three helicopters were in maintenance at the same time. I would suggest the readers to choose other well established helicopter companies to avoid the surprise. read more

Mr & I tried to take the Extreme Volcano and Waterfalls tour This experience boasted the best photo opportunity since the helicopter doesn't have doors. We arrived for our flight a ridiculous 2 hours early but we didn't judge traffic well & ended up making great time Nice girl at the desk tried to get us onto an earlier flight but they were all booked so we waited When we were getting our instructions & confirming tours & seating placement, the 2 people in the front of our 4-passenger helicopter had their doors "on".....but I thought the whole aircraft would have doors off - does this mean I paid *more* for my tour just to have the doors off, while our other tour companions paid less?? Because I can assure you, our choice was 1 of the more expensive.....never got to find out Went through the safety demo & walked out to the landing pad when the pilot came over to say weather conditions had deteriorated so much he had to cancel the flight - shucks but these things happen & I appreciated the safety-first outlook! We did a helicopter trip in the winter of 2006. We were excited to see the volcano. I wrote a review on tripadvisor and here it is: THE GOOD: I'll start here first since it's short. The pictures were amazing. THE BAD: The flight was approximately 40 minutes! It was supposed to last around 50 minutes! The pilot was horrible. He was a native Japanese guy with an accent. It was hard to understand him. In my tourbook I read that the pilot will make or break your trip. You want a pilot who is exciteable...one that doesn't say "on your left is the volcano and on your right is the..." That's the one we had. I wish he stayed around the volcano more. That was amazing. But instead we headed back early and got to see some boring, although beautiful, waterfalls. I guess it was part of the trip, but i have seen numerous waterfalls and I will see more in my lifetime but how often will you see mother nature working at such a beautiful spot??? also the headphones were crappy....they played some lame music and I could hear the pilot talking to the traffic controller guy on the ground. lame. WOULD I RECOMMEND IT: Nope. We paid around 234 for two people but it was with a timeshare discount at one of the activity places in kona. This was one of the most memorable trips of my life! The staff was as friendly as they get, from the pre-flight guy, the happy assistant who helped us aboard, and the humerous pilot. I believe his name was Soji. The helicopter appeared clean and well maintained, and the pilots skills were exceptional. In retrospect, I have complete confidence in the equipment and abilities of this pilot. The round-the-island tour, was spectacular, and the waterfalls are a must see! One recommendation would be to take two Dramamine if you think you could get sick at all. When the weight and balance in calculated, you will be placed where needed, and you might well find yourself sitting backward. It's not worth ruining such a beautiful trip with motion sickness. read more

Summary: The extreme volcano tour (doors off) is the way to go. It is VERY cold and windy, so bring REALLY warm clothes. You will have to have straps for anything that you bring with you (i.e. cameras, cell phones). You can by straps for your phone at the counter for $2. The pilots are excellent, and the ground crew are great. A very smooth and amazing ride. Views of the island and volcanoes are very cool. Lots of fun and worth the cost. Were a bit high for true adventure (sounds dumb I know) but the experience would have been so much cooler had we been lower. I looked over the pilots shoulder and we were at about 1000 ft, which seems unnecessarily safe. For the waterfalls portion - 2 stars. It was cool to see but we didn't get close due to all the residential. We ended up going to see the waterfall (Rainbow Falls) in person by car after the flight and it was great. Much better than by air! My advise to Paradise - skip the waterfalls and cruise low over Hilo Bay. Better view, cooler experience and justify the stupid life vest fanny pack we had to wear to fly over water for about 45 seconds for a 45 minute flight. Also, consider renting digital cameras and helping people get the photos off afterwards. Not having a camera means I leave with only memories. My advise to everyone else. Bring a camera WITH A STRAP. They won't let you get on the helicopter with anything strapless which means cell phones are out. We didn't have anything with a strap because our only cameras are cell phone cameras (like everyone else) so avoid that. Also, dress warm. Pants/sneakers are a must but also consider a long-sleeve shirt and/or jacket. You're over 1000 ft in elevation flying at close to 100 knots for about 15 minutes to get to the lava flows and doors off makes that chilly. read more

As part of the NCL cruise, my group were able to get a last minute booking for the Hilo volcano helicopter tour! Great service since the office was open late and were great at accommodating our request. When we stepped off port, the rain was POURING. Not letting the rain stop us from our volcano flight! After checking in and waiting for other customers, the rain let up and we had decent visibility for most of the flight. Our pilot was very informative and got us come nice views of flowing lava, lava tubes and even a aviators halo (360 degree rainbow)! Don't book the flights with any high expectations of seeing the volcano up close. The tour is more downstream of the volcano. No close up to the eruptions, no large rivers of lava flowing...just peeks at where the lava flows and if you're like me, the end of the lava flows into the ocean. Our experience was nice, but I have to say, later that night while on the ship, the night view of the lava is WAY more intense and extraordinary. If you can, try for night flights instead! read more

Something I have always wanted to do is ride in a helicopter. We read reviews and settled on Paradise "Doors off" helicopter ride over the volcano in Kona. Our family of four was flown by Zack - who happens to be a Seattle Seahawks fan and since we are from Los Angeles and without a pro-football team, we tormented him mercilessly. He is a great sport and soon realized he could teaze us too. Anyway, the ride - it was AWESOME. You MUST do the doors off. I don't like heights but the way they strap you in and prep you made me feel very comfy. My wife and I sat in the back where it was very windy so don't plan on carrying on a conversation, even with the headphones and mic because mostly all anyone hears is wind. Even when Zack put the ship into a tight turn over my side it was fun and GREAT for pics. The volcano wasn't flowing but Zack managed to find some places where it was bubbling up and boy is the air warm over the volcano. The view are spectacular, the aircraft was beautiful, the staff we can not say enough nice things about them. They were entertaining, and very fun to hang out with while we waited for the helicopter to get checked out. There are a lot of helicopter companies in this area but we had a GREAT time and recommend Paradise to EVERYONE!!! read more

Wow, just wow! We were a little worried that or tour was going to have to be rescheduled due to the weather. Thankfully, it cleared up at the last minute and we were on our way. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Matt, our pilot was great! He made sure we had some great pictures and video, even circled around some good spots for us as we requested! I couldn't believe we had such a personalized tour. Definitely an experience we will never forget. The doors off tour is definitely the way to go if you can handle it. June 23, 2009. The Paradise Helicopters doors off tour of the volcanos and waterfalls with a stop at Jacks's house was the highlight of our trip. Our pilot was Joyce who was very well informed about the volcano. As we were looking through the viewfinder of a camera for most of the flight, it was great with Joyce telling us what was coming up. She would bank the helicopter in order for us to get some great pictures. After riding with the doors off, we would not ever consider a tour with doors. Taking photos through plastic would be horible with the reflections. The entire trip was smooth and although I am scared of heights, there were no unfavorable sensations. It was like looking out the window of an airplane. The stop at Jack's house was very interesting. Getting to walk on Lava that just flowed last October while looking at the lush plants that remained around the house was remarkable. The flight was in a Hughes 500 where we all got a seat next to a removed door. Highly recommended. Remember to ask for doors off. read more

If you folks want a great view of the eruption or a great air tour, look no further! These folks are all aces in the sky! Recently my wife and I decided to check out the eruption on the Big Island. Since all the roads are closed, an aerial view is the best way to see the volcano. From the time you check in, these folks do a great job of running you through a safety orientation so you know how to safely enter and exit the helicopter, how to operate your life vest in case of a water landing, why you don't want to toss a full air sickness bag out the window (believe me, this is a real bad idea if you ever try it) and other key facts to ensure a safe flight. The helicopter normally flies with the doors on but if you're looking to take photos from the air, there's a small fee to have your door taken off. The safety harness will keep you from falling out but if you have a hat, sunglasses or sandals that aren't properly secured, there's a chance they'll fall out or you'll be asked to leave them behind. The headset helps to keep the noise of the rotors to a minimum and allows the pilot to provide a running update of what you're seeing or answer questions. My husband booked a doors-off, volcano and waterfall flyover months in advance of our Christmas vacation to the Big Island. Our two kids were excited by their first-ever opportunity to ride in a helicopter. We woke up before sunrise and made the drive from Kona to Hilo to arrive early for a 10:30am ride. The reception staff was friendly. We weighed in, watched a historical video in the passengers' lounge, and prepared for the safety demonstration. Less than half an hour before takeoff, we were informed that our pilot had called in "mechanical problems." Something to do with a fuel bladder, apparently. Ten minutes later, we were told that our flight was cancelled--with no back-up plan and no opportunity to reschedule for the same day (this was the only day we would be on the Hilo side of the island). A staffer named Jie was nice enough as he broke the news. He comped my daughter a $25 baseball cap. Doesn't make up for the disappointment or the time lost, but these things happen. Once in a lifetime experience. The entire tour was an epic adventure. I never would have imagined the thrill of how it would feel to fly over an active volcano, rivers of molten lava, in the midst of lush green Hawaiian landscapes. As we flew over Fissure 8, we could feel the heat rising up from the lava. Although we were securely strapped in, I still got the rush of adrenaline as the helicopter maneuvered and banked to give us all a birds eye view. The pilot Charlie was professional and extremely knowledgeable of the area and did an amazing job of flying. I felt like the overall tour route and length was more than adequate, by the time we were done I was happy to get my feet back on firm ground. All of the staff were friendly helpful, and displayed a true Aloha attitude and spirit. When we landed they even assisted us with taking pictures with the helicopter and pilot. Went on the extreme volcano and waterfall tour from Hilo. My sister and I were fit in at the last minute and because we were took the front two seats (that don't have an open door), we received a discount. We were able to see in front and through the side and bottom, although the middle seat in the front is the worst for photos as you always have a part of the helicopter in your pictures. We spoke to the couple who sat in back who had doors open and they felt like visibility was limited as you can't really see between the seats, however the pilot did make several turns. Our pilot was polite, but seemed like he was just doing his business, not really interested in conversation or going out of his way to make us feel comfortable. Overall, I would say that the tour is worth it, because we got to see red lava flowing from a crater and some bubbling onto the surface--sights we never would be able to see from land or water. Be aware that the front seats do not have doors off, but probably have better views--and you may be able to get a discount up front for last minute bookings so they can fill space. read more

We did the doors off tour and was the best decision we had taken. It was a five seater bird with the pilot and two passengers sitting in the front and two seats in the back. There will be one passenger who sits in the front middle seat, who will not get a window seat obviously. That worked out well for my wife who was afraid to go doors-off to start with. We were welcomed and given an orientation on what to expect and safety etc. You have to leave everything that does not have a strap and can carry cameras etc with straps. No loose ends too. Once onboard the helicopter, we soared above the clouds and the little town of Hilo towards the ocean and the lava tubes. We could catch the smoke coming out of the area where lava meets the ocean. We could also see the lava coming down the rocks to kiss the ocean. Such a fabulous experience. The pilot did four or five turns so that each side can take a better look. We headed towards the crater, and on the way looked at previous lava flows and the destruction that came with it. Fascinating to hear the stories behind all the years of lava flow that buried human history and artifacts below it. But once we reached the Kilauea crater, thick cloud smothered the top so much that we could not even get a glimpse. We returned back to the base shortly after because the weather was getting worse. We also had to cut short the tour which was supposed to cover the waterfalls. They returned some part of the ticket prices though. Overall, it is a must do for any visitor to the islands. Seeing a volcano up so close does not come easily. read more

Pass on this place! We booked a tour with the doors off volcano and waterfall tour. I asked multiple times through email and over the phone if it would be just my wife and I and I was told yes. Completely private. However, when we arrived there was another couple flying with us. Of course they were seated in the front and we got put in the back. After I was told my wife would be seated in the front. This tour only flies over the coastline for maybe 5 minutes. We did have a good look at the volcano, but after that we flew over the middle of the island. So it was pretty much all trees. Nothing to look at. And finally at the end, we flew over the waterfalls,which were not the ones advertised. You don't see any big waterfalls going into the water or anything spectacular at all. The waterfalls that we did see were tiny and we were flying like 2000' over them. You can only see them if you have a camera with a good zoom. Our guide was not very informative either. She basically recited the preflight information video in a robot voice. We will definitely be flying with someone else next time. read more

We booked our flight months ago and were told that Tuesday looked great. Guess what? We found out that the cruise ships come in on Tuesday so we got BUMPED so they could make a few dollars more. Hang on there's more. So we reschedule for Wed. and drove 1 1/2 hours from the Kona side of the big island and when we arrive we go through the preflight training and are told "oop's it's cancelled" but we can refund you right now if you want.....no, we want to fly over a volcano. Can you call us if someone else cancels, their answer NO. We reschedule for Sat and again tell them we're coming from Kona and another 1 1/2 hours to get there. We arrive and again go through preflight training. "Sorry, not going to fly again" is what we're told. Would you like a refund they're quick to offer. You can also stick around for another 3 hours when we can fly part of your party then 2 hours later to fly the others..................are you folks insane? I understand conditions change and that weather is unpredictable but that's where you want to go the extra mile right? Can you call us if someone doesn't show up? NO, it their reply.................oh, I see you reach out with the phone just fine when you want to cancel our flight for a few dollars more but you have no way of helping to make it happen. Dear "customer service support team" please save your "We're sorry" keystrokes for someone else. I'm in a service industry and I don't treat anyone the way you treated us. It was pouring rain which is common for Hilo as they get 80" a year! We drove 2 hours to get to the Hilo airport from Kona. We finally get there only to be told they may or may not go up due to weather and visibility conditions. 45 minutes later and only once we stood on the runway waiting to board getting soaking wet in the rain did we find out we were one of the few flights that day to go up. Lots of clouds and scenery of old lava flow. No sights of current lava flow they advertise for and show constant videos of in there weighting room. Money well spent doing something else like perhaps eating out 7 times or whale watching cruise or anything else. read more

Total disappointment. We booked a 45 minute, doors off, lava and waterfall tour out of Hilo. Our pilot, Joyce, was dry and had very little to say or insight to where we were flying or seeing. We barely saw any lava and never flew over the crater (where the lava is most visible and active). Our pilot claimed no one except military and those who work for the USGS are allowed to fly over the crater, yet those are the images you see in their videos and advertisements. We flew "by" some waterfalls that were very far off in the distance, 2 of which our pilot couldn't even tell us the names of them. We were sorely disappointed in this tour. And this is the 3rd helicopter tour we have taken in the islands. Total waste of money. read more

Booked the doors off tour and was able to book it with only 2 days advance booking....since we fly standby we were happy to get in that easily since we didnt know if we would make it on a flight over to the big island. Very easy to find them in the Hilo airport, airport parking was $5. Safety instructions were quick and to the point. Make sure you bring a jacket if you go on the doors off, it gets cold and windy! The only warmth is from the volcanos which you can feel and you are about 3K above them! Our pilot was Joyce and she was great. Pointed out lots of things and interacted with us alot. Our experience was great! the reception was wonderful! you have to sit through a boring documentary about the volcano.... but the crew was very enthusiastic, helpful, friendly.... i guess we were there on a good day... best seat in the house was right next to the pilot in the middle front seat... the wind at the open doors was too much to get good stable pictures.... my pictures turned out AWESOME!!!! the pilot, dillyn, was seemed to know a lot... although it sounded a little scripted... views were great.... highly recommend this tour!!! read more
