I came down with a nasty case of pink-eye and went to a highly rated optometrist in Manhattan, only to get prescribed some drops that didn't work and was sent on my way. 5 days later, my eye had only gotten worse and I searched out optometrists in my neighborhood because I was getting worried. Upon finding Park Slope Eye, I was a little put-off that they didn't answer the phone, but I emailed anyway and included a pic of my eye. That ended up being a handy way of communicating, because the Dr. could assess the problem before I came in. I got an email back within minutes telling me to come in and they will take care of me. And they did. They were all very friendly and it was obviously a busy Saturday, but Dr. Ritenour saw me right away and was so helpful. First of all, he did a ton of tests and did as much as humanly possible to rule out anything serious. That's what I was looking for. He also talked me through everything to make sure I understood everything that was going on. Turns out it's just your run-of-the-mill conjunctivitis that my body just isn't fighting off properly. So he gave me a new prescription and told me how to make myself more comfortable while my body continues to fight it. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is because when I went to pick up my prescription, it was $150. I just wish I could've been warned about that. At the end of the day, I ended up spending about $260, which included the visit, but it'll be worth it if my eye actually starts to get better. The good news is that the prescription he gave me actually makes me feel much better...so I hope I'm on my way! This place had good reviews at the time, so I made an appointment almost 2 years ago as I was having frequent headaches and hadn't had a check up for years. I confirmed with them that my insurance was accepted prior to the appointment and paid a $150 co-pay. Imagine my shock nearly 2 years later to get a bill for nearly $200! This is a shady business and I recommend avoiding them at all costs, unless you want to be misled and ripped off! I see now that many other reviewers have had problems with this business and I wish I had never stepped foot in Park Slope Eye. Dr. Bazan, I have not "been ducking you" for two years. Your office contacted me regarding this "debt" for the first time in November 2012. In the email you stated that many billing issues were likely to be the error of your office because things weren't "being followed up on." I have emailed your accounting office requesting more information about this money I supposedly owe and will review it when I receive it, probably with my attorney. Absolutely wonderful! I just cannot say enough great things about Dr. Bazan and his office. I have been going to him for years and have always been impressed with his friendly, professional manner. He is extremely courteous and knowledgeable, carefully explaining answers to questions and the exam process. He is fun, hip and has state of the art equipment. The office is bright and cheery with local artwork on the walls and yummy snacks/coffee/tea. There is even an iPad for clients' use while waiting for appointments. I recently moved to the upper west side from Park Slope but will happily make the trek back to Brooklyn to see Dr. Bazan. It is well worth the extra trip as he is the best eye doctor I have ever had! read more

This was the best eye appointment I've ever had. Sounds strange, right? But once you go, you'll be swooning! Not only was everyone so friendly and nice, but Dr. Ritenour explained what he was doing, which was interesting because I always wondered why they did all the things they did, but also how they could really tell your eyes were health. Very nice, beautiful place and friendly staff, but: 1. They NEVER answer the phone. The fancy website is a nice touch, but sometimes you just need someone to pick up the darn phone and answer a quick question. 2. The lab they use takes an unusually long time to finish your glasses. I will never come here again, and advise anyone who values their time and sanity to do the same. The office is nice, and the workers are real chill, but Dr. Bazan is extremely frustrating to say the least. He was testing my vision for glasses, and he was insistent on a perscription, even though I said I couldn't see well, and it was making me nauseous. Still he was insistent, that he was right, and there was something wrong with me because this was my perscription. He even told me :"you just can't make some people happy." I went to a lenscrafters, and the doctor there did the same tests, and gave me a different perscription. Guess what - its the correct one, and I see fine. You really can't ask for a better experience when it comes to getting an eye exam. From Dr. Bazan to the staff, everyone is extremely helpful and friendly. Great place. Very friendly. Not pushy. Great selection. Great service. Mary explained the process quite clearly and even contacted my insurance company. (My exam with Dr. Barzan was 100% covered.) Dr. Barzan's exam was friendly, thorough, and informative. (I've not worn glasses until now.) He sent me a follow up email and then even faxed a copy of the exam to my doctor. Mary was a great help in choosing frames. My wife, whose tastes are quite selective, and I both liked the frames she picked from the many possibilities on the wall. TLDR: Misleading, rude to customers. Find another provider. Over the course of approximately a year, I've had two unpleasant experiences with Park Slope Eye, which I describe below. In both cases, trying to find a solution, I instead received from Dr. Bazan what is perhaps the worst customer service I ever received from a local business. As a result, this is the only 1-star review that I've ever made on Yelp. From skimming other reviews here, it seems like I'm not alone. (EDIT: Note that Dr. Bazan's response to this review and to other 1-star reviews here give you a flavor of his unapologetic, condescending, and Trump-like attitude that I have encountered in prior dealings that I describe here). In one incident, I purchased a Groupon for an eye exam thinking I could save a buck since I don't have health insurance coverage for vision. Only AFTER purchasing the Groupon and attempting to schedule the appointment online was I informed that Park Slope Eye only accepted Groupon deals in mid-afternoon on weekdays (there was no disclosure of the limitations on the front end when purchasing the Groupon). I contacted Dr. Bazan to explain that I work in Manhattan and, that having not been informed of the restrictions on the appointments at the time of purchase of the Groupon, I would appreciate the courtesy of an evening or weekend visit using the Groupon rate. Dr. Bazan showed zero flexibility or courtesy, and instead stubbornly and brusquely insisted in multiple emails that I contact Groupon to cancel the order if I wanted a refund. To my surprise, I found Groupon customer service to be far more helpful than Dr. Bazan. In a second incident, I went to Park Slope Eye (without the Groupon) and paid out of pocket for an exam and new lenses for an existing frame. Approximately a year later (in January 2018) I received a blast email from Park Slope Eye accounting claiming that I owed a balance and insisting that I contact their billing person (Barb) if I wanted to receive an invoice. (As far as I could tell, there was no prior effort to contact me by phone or email with an invoice of what I allegedly owed.) Two weeks later, Park Slope Eye sent out a second threatening email noting that they would turn over the matter to a collection agency if customers did not reach a resolution. This second email was CC'ed about 400 patients. Many of the clients replied all in disbelief that their identity was displayed publicly (in violation of HIPAA) and responded with dismay that (like me) they didn't believe they owed any balance at all and didn't appreciate the threat of being sent to a collection agency. Some called it outright fraud. Although Dr. Bazan apologized for not BCCing the patients, he again showed no remorse about the unprofessional and aggressive collection tactics or any desire to make convenient for his clients. For me, this was the last straw - I won't be going back to Park Slope Eye and I suspect most of the 400 people on the email won't either. Note that it's impossible to speak to anyone at Park Slope Eye by phone if you have an issue or concern. If you call them, you only can leave a voicemail and good luck getting a call back. It's easier to reach a human being at an international airline, a cable company, or a government agency than it is to speak to someone at this local business. Like others here, I advise people to look to other optometrists in the neighborhood. read more

To anyone considering going to Park Slope Eye: I paid a bill from them on Nov. 28, 2012, which they continue to bill me for even though I have corresponded with them numerous times and sent them proof of payment three times. Now they have sent my paid-off bill to a "collection agency" (which they claim isn't really a collection agency, despite what the letter from the agency says). Think twice before going here. I too was contacted in November 2012, nearly 3 years after my appointment with the claim that I owed $125. Initially I was provided with no proof, no invoices, nothing to support their claim. I kept asking for invoices, and for them to clarify exactly what I was being charged for. I contacted my insurance co., ordered bank statements, everything I needed to do to track down the 3 year old transactions. Finally, I was sent 2 invoices by Dr. Bazan and after another few weeks of back and forth I at last figured out what the office had done (it looks like they didn't charge me properly for my contacts) I sent them the money and asked for a letter stating that my balance was paid in full. Throughout the whole process Dr. Bazan went from being weirdly friendly to downright mean. I mean, to the point that it's shocking. Here is the last email I got from him: "You continue to make this difficult asking for a mailed letter!?!?! Are you for real? Luck would probably have it that it never would make it to you or something. Here is what you are getting as proof. Its a screen shot of your account at zero balance. Please move on. Its not a big deal but you turn everything into an ordeal. God you are rude on top of that! Wow...so thankful to be rid of you! I am being harassed by a collection agency for a supposed balance from services received two years ago. After hours of e-mailing, I have still not been provided itemized accounting that makes any sense. The accounting at this business is a joke. I'm not sure if it's incompentence or fraud. I went in because this place was highly recommended by a good friend, and I had a great experience. Def worth taking the train from FiDi out to Park Slope (very easy subway, always a plus). The selection was varied, and all quality. The staff was great, and helped me chose between 2 frames. I usually splurge on glasses. The cool thing was, the staff gave me their honest opinion and recommended I go with the pair that was much less expensive - and I couldn't be happier with my new glasses! i went to Park Slope Eye because I have a strange vision problem (double vision), and my optomertist at the Mayo Clinic said I had to go to an indpendent eyeglass store. I was so fed up with all of the hipster places that have famous frames but never talk about the quality of the lenses. I found Park Slope Eye and fell in love. Mary is fabulous, the frames she picked out first ended up being the best, and I've now gone back to put new lenses in my sunglasses. It feels like old fashioned service, but high tech product. I blamed you for not informing us we had an outstanding balance in a timely manner so we could petition the insurance company and/or use our FSA. We never received a bill until January 1. Not by mail, not by email. It is disgusting that you would lie and say otherwise and refer to me as "entitled." I'm glad future customers can see that all of your patients have the same story, so you are clearly lying, and that you have a gross, condescending attitude. -- I'm writing this review on behalf of my husband, who doesn't have a Yelp account. He had a fine enough experience with Dr. Bazan, and I was planning to start seeing him as well, but this place lost our business because of their negligent billing practices. He received service in August 2017. They accepted his copay, he had a checkup and tests done and bought two pairs of glasses. On January 1 he received an email that he had an outstanding bill, which he needed to contact them about. They were billing him for the entire cost of the visit because the insurance denied the claim because he didn't have a referral. Beyond the frustration of them not knowing he needed a referral, the fact that they waited four months to even send a bill (or rather, ask him to ask for a bill) meant that we couldn't use our FSA to pay it. It also meant the window of opportunity to petition the insurance was over. While he was figuring out what he could do, they sent a mass email to all their patients with outstanding bills saying they were going to collections on February 1. Not only is this a completely unreasonable time period to expect payment, but they didn't BCC the email, making it a major HIPAA violation. That resulted in a long "reply all" email chain of people saying that they were being billed improperly. I had somehow gotten my eye all sorts of irritated upon recommendation from a friend, I headed over to Park Slope Eye - they were able to take me without an appointment, and I received warm & friendly service from everyone who worked there. I am not sure why this place gets such a high rating. First of all, it's an extremely expensive place to go for an exam. I was charged $155 for an eye exam, and the rest, $175 or so, was charged to my insurance, which was declined. What this means is that the regular eye exam and contact fitting cost over $300, which is ridiculously expensive. The service is mediocre, expensive, no phone contact, billing mistakes, etc. I definitely do not recommend this place especially when there are other good alternatives out there. read more

I tried Park Slope Eye because of the many five-star reviews and I'm writing my first review for Yelp because I want to advise others to avoid making the same mistake I did. I'm going to be brief, so that when Dr. Bazan inevitably rakes me over the coals in his response he won't have much to work with. #1: It took three appointments to get my prescription right. In 30+ years of wearing glasses, this was a first. #2: They've made the decision to not answer phone inquiries and handle all questions/problems/etc by email. Maybe this works for them, and maybe it'll work for you. I hated it. I don't think it's too much to ask for a business to respond promptly if a patient needs a contact lens refill or a copy of a prescription. And no, in my experience, my emails were not returned promptly. I'm happy to buy my contacts locally instead of online to support my neighbors, so getting a copy of my prescription wasn't about sending it off to an online retailer. I just needed a copy to travel with. That - which should have taken a day or so at most - took a week. As a 15-year Park Slope resident I'd strongly recommend Eyes on the Slope (terrific frames), Visions on Lincoln Pl, and my eye doctor, Adam Friedland of Urban Optical. His staff is friendly and accommodating (they once Fed Exed me lenses when I was stuck out of town), they have a great selection of frames, and Dr. Friedland is a consummate professional who values my eye health and my time. UPDATE: Dr. Bazan should consider the fact that sometimes his patients get married and change their last names. I'll let readers judge for themselves whether my review rings true or false. I will however, defend my reputation against accusations of shilling: I go to Urban Optical, but I purposefully recommended the two other local eye shops I've patronized in the past and had good experiences with. I don't care where anyone goes: Go to Warby Parker, go to Lens Crafters, go to Pearle Vision. But I'd carefully measure the one-star reviews along with the five-star reviews. Dr. Bazan is amazing at social media. If that's what you want in an eye doctor, go for it. read more

Worse than getting an appointment at the DMV. They cancelled my appointment TWICE yet would not release my prescription until I returned. On top of it they CANNOT BE REACHED BY PHONE. Only text or email, which makes it virtually impossible to get a quick response to any complaint. To cap it off, when I complained about the double cancellation the Dr. himself emailed me telling me that he wasn't going to miss his vacation for my follow-up. DON'T BOTHER GOING HERE. First of all great customer service, very nice. I made the mistake of being to trusting. I bought a pair of glasses, and after the fact got home and realized after doing some research that I was overcharged 3x what the frames are actually worth. I would do a price comparison before I bought glasses from this place, I do not think someone treating you nice is actually worth 300 dollars for a frame that cost 98 dollars somewhere else. (Initially rated this as 2 stars but Dr. Bazan went above and beyond what another retailer would have, was persistent in trying to solve my problem, a little too persistent. He is definitely someone who cares about his reputation and the opinions of his clients. because my previous review got deleted somehow... I recently went into this store to make an appointment for an eye exam. I had been walking around for several weeks barely able to see. I just moved to the park slope area from Washington Heights, where my cafe is. I am usually not one for writing negative reviews on businesses but I felt I had to share this. While waiting for the man at the front desk to finish what he was doing, I had quite an interesting experience. The doctor ( who I now assume is the owner of the business ) spoke to his staff in such a horrible way. He basically spoke to his employees like children. Very weird guy. Note to the owner: if you think talking to your staff in this way makes you seem cool and makes you look powerful to your patients, YOU ARE VERY WRONG. It makes patients not want to do business with you, CLEARLY. First I thought maybe I was over analyzing and only seeing a small piece of a situation but then another customer requested to cancel his appointment because he did not agree with the behavior of the doctor. I thought, Why would I want to trust someone like that with my health? If you will speak to employees like that, you probably would not care about customers either. I want to have doctors that are actually nice people, which is owner of park slope eye is clearly not. The staff at the store all seemed very intelligent and friendly, surely not deserving to be talked to like that. Maybe I am biased as a business owner myself after obtaining a BA in Business Management. I would never talk to my employees in this way. The owner of park slope eye needs a few lessons in ethics. Terrible customer service. I asked if they took United Health Care and they said yes. It turns out there is a difference between United Health Care and United Health Care Vision (how would I ever know that?!). When I got to my appointment, I was explained that I was not covered, so I said that I would have to find someone who was covered under my plan. They said they would then charge my credit card $50 for a cancellation. I pointed out that I had acted in good faith and showed up to my appointment but that I had been given the wrong information and they were completely unaccommodating. This place used to be great on customer service but this was a perfect example of good gone bad. I will not ever recommend it again. read more

I took my daughter to them and they were good. However, they told me that they accepted my insurance so I set up an appointment for myself. When I showed up they asked for a payment of $250 because they did not accept my insurance; interestingly enough I have the same insurance that my daughter used! I explained that I could not afford the fee. as I am on a limited budget and that I would therefore need to cancel the appointment. They then requested a $50 cancellation fee. This is not a good business practice. Be sure they double check your insurance; because later they will try to charge you. I do not recommend anyone go to them. This seem like such a shady practice. I also will not be bringing my daughter back. I will be contacting the NY BBB. Part 2: Park Slope has responded by posting our partial email exchange, which was in regard to my daughter's appointment; not mine (more evidence of unprofessional behavior)! What they neglected to convey is that I was told by the receptionist that they accepted my insurance when I arrived for my toddler's appointment; hence, the fee for my daughter's exam was only $65 dollars. Given what I was told by the receptionist and the amount that I actually paid for my daughter's exam (an amount that differs from the amount quoted in the posted email by almost $100), I then made an appointment for myself on the spot. I was happy they were in my network! There was no email exchange about the issue I am complaining about nor did I agree to any cancellation policy for my exam. When I showed up for my appointment and the fee of $250 was requested, I was certainly surprised. Especially given their accepting my insurance for my daughter's exam. Park Slope Eye indicated that they "do not like surprises"; neither do customers. I would not have made an appointment out of network for myself, as there are plenty of doctors that accept my insurance. I recommend that your business work on your record keeping and insurance records and not post email exchanges that are unrelated to the complaint mentioned herein. I am certainly no scam artist and abide by a set of personal and professional ethics. I really appreciate Yelp because it can help keep businesses honest and this review is based on my personal experience; potential clients should beware. I will let the NY Better Business Bureau (BBB) handle this one, as today I was contacted by a debt collection company about a $50 cancellation policy that I did not agree to. I've been here once to browse at glasses a while ago, but I have not been here since. I am in need of an optometrist and was looking at Yelp for reviews in my area. I had similar experiences to many others. Bad prescription from a doctor (no longer there), tough scheduling.... None of this bothered me because PSE was polite and eventually corrected whatever was wrong (though I did have to go elsewhere to get a prescription and a new pair of glasses). In my experiences years before my most recent bad experience, Dr. Bazan was very professional, polite, and seemed decent. These responses to patients are very odd and seem to be from a different person than the Dr. Bazan of 2009. They surely don't sound like someone who understands anything about customer service. I'm writing this to tell you that youmight want to look closely at your insurance claims to assure your insurance is being charged appropriately. I'm hoping some discrepancies I'm finding (billing insurance for service I did not get) are staff errors that can easily be corrected and/or insurance company errors. We will see. read more

Don't ever go in here unless you want to be treated like nothing and you don't matter!!!!!!! These people think they are so wonderful that they don't need business. So I had bought a voucher on groupon for $200 towards an eye exam and prescription glasses, I came in without an apointment not knowing that you actually need to have one to come, in since it wasn't written anywhere in the groupon. These people had the worst attitude and have no idea what proper customer service is. I came in and was informed that I couldn't be seen without an appointment. Fine! I tried to explain that I had literally no other time to come in and if they could help me find some kind of option because I was in a tight spot.The only reaction I got was dirty looks, a disgusting attitude and being told that I can leave because they don't need my business. Fine. Listen up Yelp these people don't need your business. If you want to be treated rudely and told to leave just because you try to come there, then by all means go here. But if your looking for quality service go else where because these people don't understand what good customer service is. I went to Park Slope Eye because it had fairly good reviews online and was on my way to work. I've been having serious headaches and eye pain and thought maybe I needed glasses. Dr. Bazan was really awesome and nice and gave me a thorough exam. Granted, though, it was a fairly simple and quick issue, nothing super complicated or severe. However, after reading these Yelp reviews and his responses, I've been discouraged from ever returning. I find it extremely unprofessional the way Dr. Bazan responds to his patients. It's catty and immature. Because of their lack of phone (which, is weird definitely, but didn't bother my personally), I e-mailed the office a follow-up question and never heard back. It was then that I came back to read these reviews. Even though Dr. Bazan was great in our exam, it was a quick visit and, the way he handles his online persona makes me feel that he is untrustworthy and makes me reluctant to develop an ongoing doctor/patient relationship. To potential patients: I would encourage you to read some of his responses before going to see him. They made me very uncomfortable, and I'd venture to guess i'm not the only one. Hopefully Dr. Bazan will read this and realize that his online practices could be hurting his business. read more

This office sent a mass email to collect outstanding without using the BCC for all patients and failed to apologize in a timely manner or address the issue. Their accounting is a mess and they push you to get expensive tests. read more

I really wanted to like this place - easy going doctor, convenient location, email only contact... Unfortunately, I've been there for 2 exams and each time ends with disappointment. The first visit the exam was fine, the Dr was nice and thorough enough - receptionist couldn't have cared less about his job. When my over-priced contacts finally came in I picked them up from the office and the prescription was wrong. I contacted Dr Bazan - he replied right away which was awesome - but he let me know that's what the prescription was in his computer - did I maybe make a mistake and remember it differently? Actually - the trial lenses he gave me (a couple weeks worth which is generous) were in my new and improved prescription and the contacts that were ordered would set me back a few years in eyesight. Long story short - exam = good, communication = bad My second visit went about the same (friendly doctor, aloof receptionist), the only difference is I did not order contacts through the office as I can order them for half the cost online...Dr Bazan supplied me with trial lenses in my updated prescription - which changed slightly from the year before - and the receptionist offered, or hinted, several times that she could order them for me - but I declined, payed my co-pay and went about my life. When I placed an order through a contact lens supplier I'm informed that Park Slope Eye was contacted and my prescription is expired. When I contact the office I'm told that I did not get a contact lens exam while I was in so my prescription wasn't updated. That's very strange because I came in specifically for that purpose and could have purchased contacts that day. Is it that my prescription was only valid if I ordered from that office? As of now I'll have to contact my insurance company since I used my yearly visit for an eye exam at this place - see if I can have that remitted and used elsewhere for a valid exam. A warning! I tried to find out if Park Slope Eye took my vision insurance, but they didn't respond to calls or emails until I was within 24 hours of my appointment, and they have a $50 cancellation fee. Even when they did finally email me back, the information I got didn't match what I was told once I showed up. At that point, they quoted me one price at the front desk, then revealed it would cost much more when I sat down with a doctor. My recommendation is to find a different eye doctor - one that actually communicates honestly with patients. read more
