I recently visited Park Slope Optical for an eye exam and to get a prescription for both glasses and contacts. The entire experience was excellent from start to finish. The staff was friendly, professional, and very welcoming. I'm new to wearing contacts, and the team was incredibly patient while training me on how to put them in and take them out. They walked me through each step without rushing and made me feel completely comfortable. I really appreciated how supportive they were--it made a huge difference for a first-timer! In my 25 years of wearing glasses, this is the best optometry practice I've ever been to. I came to Dr. Arthur explicitly for his expertise in treating keratoconus, a condition I've had for a number of years. I have seen multiple ophthalmologists for this but none have provided nearly the level of insight into my specific case as Dr. Arthur did. As my vision has worsened, I have struggled to use progressive lenses for some time. Dr. Arthur confirmed that the problem was in fact not the keratoconus, but that I had never been correctly fitted for progressives by a skilled optometrist. He had me work with Ismaa to pick out frames that would sit at the correct position on my face for my eyes to be able to comfortably see all areas of the lenses. Ismaa was incredibly patient with my skepticism about buying yet another pair of progressive lenses, and she expertly guided me toward many frames which fit the bill. She took several measurements of where my pupils were in relation to the frames I chose in order to be sure that the lenses would be made to my precise needs. When my glasses came in, I was shocked at what a difference the correct fitting and higher quality lenses made in my vision. My prescription had not changed from a year ago, but I could see much more clearly with this pair than with any progressives I'd had before. My experience is that EVERY reliable eyewear establishment is expensive these days!!., ... so I was braced to spend some money.. I was very happy with the service. And they were very efficient in handling my requests even when they were busy. Solid collection of frames although I have only had prescriptions changed in frames I already had..- which is not what some vendors will do. I appreciate that. read more

DO NOT COME HERE! my glasses had a problem where the peripheral is so blurry I can't read text at any angle other than straight-on. they remade the lenses several times, but after a couple months they still couldn't figure it out. now I just have to hope that it doesn't permanently hurt my vision while I wait for my insurance to let me get new ones. read more

I know this location is marked closed, but I still wanted to post this just in case they reopen. I was charged $250 for only frames in March. A few days later, I found the same frames online for substantially less. I called them once and emailed twice to speak with management to inquire about their refund policy, and they didn't return my call or emails. They were incredibly nice when I was in the store, but I would never buy anything from them again. I didn't like my experience here overall. I needed a new pair of glasses, since my old pair was starting to crack and just needed them to wear at home at night. I waited about 30 minutes to see the doctor & chose my frames while I waited. A week later I went to pick up my glasses & started wearing them. (My eyesight between my left and the right are very similar but slightly different) I didn't notice that they messed up my prescription! the left was in my right and the right was in my left side :( I barely wear these but when I do I get a blinding headache. On top of that the $400 frames are so bad they are all stretched out. I've temporarily relocated out of state now so I can't go back for a while, but if you go here and your head starts to hurt from wearing your glasses, definitely think about whether the prescription is accurate. read more

Dr. Baruch is great!! I came here for my first pair of glasses ever. The experience turned out to be life-changing. The Dr. was able to identify that I was left eye dominant and right handed, which helped to explain why I've been clumsy my whole life. We had a very straightforward discussion about all my options. I was apprehensive about starting out with glasses instead of contact lenses, but I'm glad he convinced me to get glasses. Now that I have them, I'm glad I can take them on and off as needed, since I only use them to see distance. My only hang-up was that I got the sense that the man who tried helping me pick out frames was getting a little impatient with me and may have been a bit disappointed that I didn't buy frames from them. I assume that's one of the main ways they support their business, but I am very particular about my style, and wasn't able to find any that I liked, unfortunately. Very reliable business. I got my current frames (my favorite pair of glasses I've ever owned) here. The woman -- I think her name might be Tammy? -- was super sweet and helpful when I was picking out my frames. The owner, Charlie, was also very responsive and professional after some issues arose that were out of the store's control. Park Slope Optical was extremely helpful with resolving them ASAP, and I'm very impressed with their customer service. I am fairly new to the neighborhood. As I needed a new prescription, I decided to go to Park Slope Optical. I am so glad I did. Charlie was such a professional and very friendly. As I am a petite women, he picked frames there were prefect for my size. I did buy a pair. I have been wearing glasses about 40 years. What made me give him a 5 stars was his dedication to making sure they fit my petite face. As I wear progressive glasses, he made sure the measurements were prefect. Then, he did something no other person did and that was he adjusted the length of the temples. Now my glasses it's normally and not extent to the back of my head. LOVE my new glasses. read more

The doctor was very nice but the equipment was VERY old and I went in because I was having trouble seeing and he decreased my prescription!! He told me he was going to order a pair of contacts for me to try but never called. I had to call to see if they were there. Sure enough, I'm still having trouble seeing. Had an exam done for my contacts and glasses! paid a deposit towards either a pair of glasses or contacts because i didn't have the full amount for the glasses. I have been getting glasses for my disabled son from this place for 12 years. Charlie is the picture of kindness and patience and does amazingly accurate work with a pretty 'thick' prescription. Their prices are fair, frame selection large. The whole neighborhood goes, from old folks on fixed income, to big brand-name spenders. It's always like a family reunion there. Everyone is treated with the same warmth. Recently after a bad experience with Cohen's on 7th, we went back to Charlie to get a redo. . . lo and behold, not only were the Italian frames stronger and nicer looking, the whole thing, including anti-reflective coating, came to less than what Cohen's had ripped us off for. I've never met Dr. Quin, but his staff has been extremely helpful. We ordered some daily contacts and unfortunately the order came as monthly and the phone numbers they had for us on file were not working on several occasions to reach us. Although, they worked for all others... The staff was extremely helpful in communication once we were able to get through to them and they not only got the order fixed in a timely matter but Dr. Quin and the staff gave us more then we ordered to make up for it! I'm very picky about shapes, colors, and quality, in every object that I have to use on a daily basis, because I have university degrees in fine arts and product design. It's a curse. Some of you know what I mean. So I went to this store three separate times to select one pair of frames. (And made 2 or 3 phone calls with questions, in between the visits.) Each time, I was calmly welcomed in the store, with no attitude other than courtesy and helpfulness. I found frames that made me happy! They have great prices (I shopped around). I am flabbergasted by the positive reviews. I'm only one person and this was just my experience, but I wouldn't return to this optician if you paid me. The doctor seemed like he was in a bad mood, snapping at me every time I expressed a concern. He asked very few questions and expressed the worst bedside manner of any doctor I've ever been to. He was downright rude and argumentative. I swear I am not this person under the usual circumstances, but I actually left crying. I think I was just shocked by the way I was being spoken to and frustrated that my needs were not being met. I went in because my vision had been oddly grainy lately and I was trying to get to the bottom of the issue. He told me my eyes were just dry and I needed to get eye drops and use them every day. When I went to another highly-rated eye doctor afterwords, not only did she offer me a different prescription than his, she told me that I had cuts all over both of my corneas, and that that was causing the "graininess." She prescribed me something to help restore my corneas and voila, my eyesight is better. Again, this is just my experience and judging by other peoples', this place is allegedly awesome? Seriously, though, it was a really crappy situation and I'd never recommend this particular doctor, Jeffrey Baruch, to anyone. read more

I am so impressed by their skill, their old fashioned attention and helpfulness. My daughter broke her eyeglasses (purchased elsewhere) on Columbus Day weekend home from college. She needed them going back to Boston. I went into three optical shops, all said nothing could be done. The wonderful guy behind park Slope optical counter said he would try, couldn't guarantee, but he would try. 20 minutes later I walked out with fixed glasses! I always can depend on Charlie for professional and hard-working service even if they have to be super Covid aware. Dr. Jeffrey Baruch is patient and listens to my tangential Lyme Disease and Bartonella related irtitation and inflammation questions longer than my Lyme doctor does. The store, Charlie and Dr. B are all top-notch. And so is the turnaround. If a lens reflects my eye too much or is not 100% covering with glare-proof, Charlie replaces it no questions asked. Old-school they may be. But I hope they never go out if business (as hipster places lack their integrity). read more

I actually left this business and updated my Facebook status with "Katie endorses Park Slope Optical". I've had generally awful experiences at eye care places since moving to the city, and this was the opposite. It felt like a 1950s-era shop, with a level of customer service I'd thought didn't exist anymore. I came in for a simple exam and glasses, and the doctor spent about half an hour with me, explaining everything from which brand of contact solution to buy to what I can do about my dry eyes and allergies. A few months ago I came here to get some new glasses because my contacts had been irritating me more than usual for some time and I hated the glasses I had and felt I couldn't see very well out of them. I made an appointment and got a thorough eye exam with the doctor who explained to me why my contacts were irritating me and why I was having such bad eye irritation. He gave me some special eye drops to take with me and gave me some recommendations on what to do to decrease the irritation. I've followed his advice and have had significantly decreased eye irritation over the past few months and my eyes no longer get red as frequently. Meanwhile, Charlie helped me pick out some glasses and was very patient while I hemmed and hawed over which ones looked best on me and which ones I liked. He gave me advice on the lenses. Overall, glasses are always expensive, especially for someone whose vision is as bad as mine, but I felt it was a fair price compared to what I've paid both in New York City and suburban Washington state before. (Unfortunately, I don't get vision coverage with my insurance.) There may be better places out there, but Park Slope Optical will be getting my repeat business read more

This place is great and Charlie is awesome. I live in sunglasses, I have a light prescription that actually allows me to see that trees have individual leaves... Win right... Anyway Charlie has done my glasses for years, takes the time to be familiar with the shape I wear, I'm a creature of habit, and calls me whenever he thinks there's something I might like. I actually lost a pair in a waffle house in Slidell Mississippi (a whole other story) and I called Charlie the next day, he special ordered exactly the frames I had, which were discontinued, made the glasses and fed exed them to me. I feel that I understand my eyes better and how to care for them much better since coming to Park Slope Optical. The optician is also great and takes time with people choosing their glasses. Much like the other 1-star reviews, I am completely surprised that the positive reviews exist. I would describe my first experience as mediocre, but as time went on I downgraded my description to 'awful, possibly dishonest'. They charge through the nose for a contact lens fitting and did not tell me my insurance wouldn't cover it at all until it was time to pay. Also they refused to do my contact lens insurance claim in-store for some reason (was just told "we can't do that") - my insurance covers up to a certain amount for lenses, and they insisted I pay the full amount which was hard for me to do at the time. I was expecting my insurance to be able to cover that amount. The FTC REQUIRES eye places to give you your prescription before you leave the shop, and this place did not do that for me. This is against the law. It took weeks to get it from them. Same as other bad reviews with that theme, it was like pulling teeth. I had to call to follow up etc. to get it emailed to me. And when it was... it wasn't signed! I had bought contact lenses through them initially but found a better place online. I went to use the prescription they emailed me and the online store told me they had contacted my optometrist and that it was expired. I checked the date on the prescription again, and it said it wouldn't expire for many months. I called the office and spoke to Dr. Baruch and he told me they put the wrong date down on the prescription and that I needed to come in for another exam and fitting. Either they legitimately made a mistake or they were hustling me to get another exam out of me. I don't know which, but I don't like either of those possibilities because I expect my doctors to have attention to detail when it comes to matters of my health. Both the guy in the front and the optometrist will keep interrupting you and not really listen. It's rude and incredibly frustrating. I've noticed that they do this more to women in the store, but I bet they conveniently don't notice that they do that. They put new lenses in my glasses and although I told them it wasn't totally clear and that I kept having a kind of coke-bottle effect, they kept insisting there was nothing wrong and it was in my head. I've had glasses my entire life. Since I was old enough to even have glasses on my head. It was insulting and disrespectful, and eventually I realized they weren't going to help me so I gave up. They will tell you they really want you to be happy and start off making you feel really good - shop has that charming mom n' pop vibe to it - but if you ask any questions that they don't like - 'can you match the online price', 'can I get my prescription' or question their work eg. 'these glasses don't feel right' - basically anything that could cut into their margins even a little bit - be prepared to be talked over and argued with. read more

I've been here twice in two years, both times my glasses got smashed at concerts. The people are Park Slope Optical were incredibly helpful and friendly both times. The first time, they assisted in picking out frames (very important since I was essentially blind), worked with a reticent optometrist in Virgnia who didn't want to fax over my expired prescription, and made my glasses in an hour while I had lunch at a diner next door. The second time, they took my prescription over the phone in the morning and had the lenses ready to fit to frames that evening after work. Who actually makes you pick out glasses when your eyes are dilated?? THEY DID! This is my first pair of adult glasses and I was thrown off enough at the fact I needed them but then they teamed up on me to rush me to pick out glasses. When I got home my fiance said, what the?? Optometrist is extremely disagreeable and argumentative Told me that there were medical things wrong with my eyes and needed to get a new contact lens fitting. Decided to follow up with an ophthalmologist (extremely experienced doctor who has been practicing for over 30 years) because i was concerned--who said there was nothing wrong and didn't understand why he would say this to me.
