I've been coming to this place ever since I was a little girl and it holds very special memories for me. The food is amazing and the service is great as well. My favorite dish is the Peruvian ceviche it is so tasty and fresh definitely will recommend. I also recommend the green spaghetti's (tallarines verdes) with chicken or meat. Your choice. Lastly the papa a la huancaina is to die for. This is a yellow creamy sauce on top of a bed of potatoes that pairs with any food. The owners of this place are always in the restaurant he even cooks as a chef. They are very amazing and very polite people. Definitely the best Peruvian restaurant in Downey. Fernando's is a close 2nd then Pollo A La Brasa. Cholito's Lomo Saltado Special is everything thing you want, in one dish. The steak is juicy and tender. The chicken is flavorful. And the shrimp is cooked to perfection and not rubbery at all. They also devein the shrimp, which is a nice touch to detail. Some places I've been to, overlook something so small, but yet, so important... in my humble opinion. One thing I also pay close attention to, is, how well do they make their aji, aka green sauce, aka green crack, aka "salsa". Theirs taste perfect! Just enough heat for you to keep going back to it. Every now and then I go on a aji verde sauce kick. This sauce can be found at all Peruvian restaurants and Parrilla's was the closest to me at moment of craving so Parilla's it was for dinner. Bread, butter & aji verde sauce is always brought before all meals at Peruvian restaurants and man I love it. It's so simple but so delicious. I love it when the bread comes hot melting the butter. From there I usually pour sauce on top before every bite of bread. For spicy fans the sauce provides the perfect amount of heat. I could practically stuff myself off of this alone but usually call it quits after two rounds of bread. Have to save room for the main plates. Lomo Saltodo is my all time favorite for Peruvian dishes with arroz con mariscos coming in second. It's been a while since I've had the rice dish so decided to go with that for the night. The rice had a decent flavor due to the wine it's cooked in. You can also taste the flavor of the seafood throughout the rice without actually putting any of the seafood in your mouth. Onions soaked in leche de tigre (tiger milk) are given on the side which I love. This adds a lemony onion flavor to the dish. Just an FYI: Leche de tigre is the best part of Peruvian ceviche if you choose to order it. In my opinion anyway. Both the bread and rice left me stuffed and satisfied. If you love peruvian food or like food with a lot of flavor, i would definitely recommend this place. Ive been to a few peruvian food places around Los Angeles and this is my favorite one. They have a really good lomo saltado and their portion size is pretty big. The only negative thing about this place is that they dont have many servers and sometimes it takes a while to order or get your food. I grew up with Peruvian food, both homemade and from authentic restaurants. Whilst I am not an authority, I can clearly recognise good Peruvian food. I came here last year when they had a B health rating and it was decent. This visit was way worse and their health rating is an A. I ordered the saltado de pollo with white meat. The chicken came out burnt, tasted dirty and had a glaze. Saltado usually has a nice thin sauce that spreads out to the rice; this sauce was thick and just sat on the chicken, leaving the rice and fries dry. When I told the waitress that this was disgusting, she blamed me for ordering white meat, as if that would make any sort of difference; saltado is not limited to a mix of dark and white meat chicken, look at the menu. I didn't eat it and they removed it from the bill. The aji here was awful the first time and it's still bad. The lighter coloured aji tastes like mustard and the darker green aji is just spicy without any flavour. My daughter liked the store bought, frozen dinosaur chicken nuggets they sell, though. read more

I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews but here goes mine; from the moment we walked in, no one acknowledged or attended us. We stood in line for people to pay for their meals until we asked a waitress passing (in a rush) if we seated ourselves to which she said yes. Sat down and ordered yucca frita and beans to start, which took a while to come out. The yucca was ok but the pinto beans were pretty good. My husband and son ordered milanesa and lomo saltado which took over 30 minutes to appear. During this time, we never saw our waitress come to us to give us an update on food or even provide drink refills. The waitress and cashier (owner?) stood behind the counter the entire time chit chatting. Meanwhile, my family is eating and my food is nowhere to be found. I ordered the pollo saltado since I didn't see veggie options until I started reading the yelp reviews and my dish still didn't appear until a good 15 minutes AFTER my family got their food! All in all, I waited at least 45 minutes for my food and once it arrived, I was even more disappointed. The rice had a fishy taste, almost like it was cooked in fish stock or in a pot that is used to cook seafood. The pollo saltado was extra salty and grossed me out the moment I bit into it. Chicken was chewy, like i bit into a piece of membrane. Gross. Couldn't even finish the rest. The only decent thing I can say I had was the leftover salad from my son's plate. After running errands all day, we were starving and not familiar with the area. We decided that we needed lunch ASAP and turned to the Yelp app to guide us to our next destination. Less than a block a way was a Peruvian restaurant that had pretty solid reviews, so we thought we'd check it out. Now, if you're driving down Paramount, you can easily miss it (we did) and we had the navigation going. The place has a small lot that all the businesses in the small area share, but there is plenty of street parking if you're not so lucky. The decor is older, but they have some flat screen televisions showing off various menu items while others were tuned into soccer games. It looks like this place gets rented out for special events as there were speakers, projectors and lights setup around the restaurant. We were immediately greeted and told to sit where we liked. For being around 2PM on a Friday, the place still had a good amount of patrons filling in to eat. That's usually a good sign. While we waited, some nice dinner rolls were delivered to our table with two house sauces. I went for the green as it was the spiciest and I wasn't disappointed. For food, I got the Pollo Saltado. It came with a side of rice and a good amount of chicken sauteed with onions and tomatoes presented on top of some crispy fries. The portion was plenty for lunch and ran about $12.99 in price. The pollo was tender and the fries stayed solid during the entire eating experience without getting mushy. I'd definitely order again. Service can be a little slow at times as there is only one waitress serving the entire restaurant. It wasn't too bad and she was super friendly during the entire experience. I'm never in this area, so I don't know if I will be able to make my way back, but if for some reason I am, I'd definitely make a stop for another meal! read more

Not to be bias since this was my restaurant of choice for our Thursday work lunch. Tasked with finding a place for the rest of the crew, I started yelping Peruvian food in the Downey area. This is one of the things I missed about living in the San Fernando Valley. Good authentic Peruvian food can easily be had all around. So I was yelping around and saw this place. Once quick glance at the pictures and I had my choice. This restaurant is definitely a hole in the wall type restaurant. Don't expect anything fancy but what you can expect is some pretty good food albeit on the pricier side. 8 of us showed up around noon and it was pretty empty saved for a few tables. We were quickly seated and since the majority of the people had never had peruvian food before, ordering was quick with lomo saltado being a common choice. I opted for the #31 which was the Bistek topped w/ a fried egg. While we were waiting for our food, we all snacked on the bread and 2 types of sauce that they had. The green is the mild one. The yellow one definitely had a kick to it. Everyone seemed to enjoy food as there were no complaints. Not a bad restaurant for friends and coworkers to get their first taste of Peruvian food. Instead look for "El Cholito"*** We waltzed in but found a singular family (I think friends of owners?) who told us someone would be right with us. The dining room was completely empty which I usually take as a bad sign. The interior is colorful... old, but clean. It looks like it turns into a disco at night Bread, margarine, green sauce - I haven't touched margarine in years.. would have preferred butter. Green sauce- good My friend got the bistec al pobre - a plate of carbs, starch, and protein. Fried bananas, garlic steamed rice, fries, steak topped with 2 whole eggs. He inhaled everything but the fried bananas I got the pollo saltado - mmmm freaking GOOD!!! The fries were perfectly crispy. the chicken was tender and well seasoned, the onion and tomatoes not over cooked. Dare I say it's better than El Pollo Inka? yep. The waitress spoke very little English but it wasn't a problem. She was really sweet and told us honestly that she did not like lomo saltado and instead suggested the bistec. Okay my lomo saltado heads! We made a trek out to Downey to hang with my nephew for the day and yes I keep an eye out for Peruvian places anytime I can. So I locate this place and it happens to have the best ratings (yelp) in town. So here we are. I actually order the lomo with shrimp because it was bigger. The plate comes out and it's looking really good. On sight everything looks overdone. The meat looks charred and the fries look well done but to my surprise it was actually tender and the char gave it a nice character. It didn't just mush to the bite but the inside was tender and took on the flavors of the marinate well. The fries were much the same. AND if you're like me you drown your plate in green sauce so the added cooking texture allowed for the meal to stay relatively crisp while other turn into mush (which will all that flavor isn't necessarily a bad thing either). All in all the sauce was good and spicier than most, while the meat was juicy and had a great flavor and as mentioned before texture. Fries were nice once hit with the green sauce. I would love to have a place like this nearby home but if it's not nearby sometimes it makes it just that much better. Guess I'll have to visit the nephew more often. read more

3.5 stars. I know this place is supposed to be amazing because it is usually always full. This was my first time trying it. I had the 1/4 lb chicken with beans and fries on the side and my girlfriend had the Lomo Saltado. The chicken was a little bit dry and seemed a little old. I know restaurants don't have fresh chicken every single day but still. The Lomo Saltado was apparently amazing 5 out of 5. I guess it is what they are known for so it is what matters most. In regards to service: it was Ok. Nothing bad to say and nothing over the top to talk about either. Just your average customer service. In regards to parking: I think that it is quite small. We went when it was almost empty but due to it being inside a plaza, there was only 2 parking lots left. I can only imagine how full it is when Saturday comes aroudn Price: I thought the chicken price was good. $10.99. Typical anywhere for anything but the lomo saltado i THINK was around $19.99. That to me is too steep. I should have SOME leftovers at that price but anyway, i guess it si their main thing so you can be the judge of that. Would I come again? It's not surprising this place has so little reviews. The sign outside is kinda hard to figure out... and I still dont think it matches up with the name of the restaurant. But for what I like about "typical" Peruvian food, I think this is one of the better restaurants. Previously I've always ordered to-go. Their food takes a bit long to cook to be honest. And no different while seated inside. But at least you get bread and the green aji sauce. Whats more notable is the special creamy mayonnaise they also give. Theres some interesting murals on the wall, and oddly a disco light rig and music setup for private parties I suppose... I don't think it detracts from the ambiance really. I've always gotten the ceviche here and its always well prepared. Its a good amount of seafood bits and they even plate it with extra citrus juice. Topped with a fried prawn! Their lomo saltado has a cleaner taste than most, yet still just greasy enough. I know there's another supposed good Peruvian place in Downey, but I like this place and will stick with it. read more

The Papa a La Huancaina is a special Peruvian food from my Country. For the beverages, the wine is very tasty. For the food, they make the food with organic ingredients, like basil, spinach, fresh cheese, and olive oil. For some dishes, they use parmesan cheese. The cheese is  very tasty and they use it to grill the steak. There are different kinds of Peruvian wine. The Restaurant has a small parking lot. The service its very excellent. The restaurant is very big and located on Downey Ave. in the city of Downey, close to Alameda. I recommend this restaurant because the people are very nice and very friendly. I love finding new places when I'm running errands and this place was no exception. Got here early and there was no wait. Good service and food was over the top. Tallarín especial - fettuccine noodles in this wonderful sauce topped with steak, shrimp, chicken and bell pepper/onions. Usually noodles are flavorless at most Peruvian places but here they stand alone - very tasty. Their food is always good but their prices have gone up drastically. And I believe this is something because last time I ordered about a month ago this wasn't enforced but if you order more than 3 plates, you have to pay over the phone to start your order. The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is the service. It was very busy on a Friday night, and all the tables but two were full with people. We were seated right away and that is where the trouble started. They sat us down and we realized that there was only one waitress to serve all the tables in this place! We sat there for almost 5 minutes before they even brought us a menu. We were getting ready to get up and leave when the waitress came over and apologized for the wait. So we decided to stay and try the food. I have only had Peruvian food once and it was awesome so I had high hopes for this place. I was not disappointed! The food is good.
