At Tai Kai you leave with so much more. Not only do you get top level training from the original BJJ school in CNY who has the most black belts around, but you also gain a new family, community, a home away from home where everybody knows your name (like Cheers, but without the alcohol). I couldn't be more sincere when I say you earn a new family. And this was evident when my 5 year old son (who also trained at Tai Kai) was diagnosed with brain cancer. Ken, the owner and my friend the past 10 years, put together a fund raiser at the gym to help raise money for my son and the upcoming medical costs. The turnout was huge and was more than I would've ever expected. Ken and everyone else at the gym checks on My son all the time, asking how he's doing and I wish I can bring him into the gym so he could get to see everyone who cares about him. Others had dropped of food for us, donated toys, clothes...etc to help relieve our burden. The 10 years I've spent training Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and mma at Tai Kai; the blood and sweat, the physical rigors and soreness from a great workout....it's all been worth it to be able to be part of a family and community that had my back in the most difficult time of me and my family's life. In July, I purchased a $700 pass for 10 personal training sessions as part of a "summer special", with the promise that a master's-educated trainer would be available. Unfortunately, that trainer never started working at the gym, and I was not informed of this until late September--months after waiting and following up. Despite knowing my schedule, Randy repeatedly suggested trainers who were already fully booked. He then set me up with an unqualified intern who worked at the front desk. When I expressed my concerns, he acknowledged that this wasn't acceptable and offered Pilates as an alternative. However, that turned out to be another false promise, as no sessions or teachers were actually available. After months of back and forth and empty promises, I requested a refund, as it was clear I was not receiving the services I had paid for. Randy initially agreed but then delayed the refund, citing financial excuses like needing to wait until after the "metro gala." By November, I still hadn't received my money, and he stopped responding to my calls and texts entirely. Now it is mid January. This has been a frustrating and disheartening experience, especially as someone in a low-paying position after completing graduate school. I share this in hopes of warning others about this gym and Randy's business practices. If anyone has advice on handling situations like this, I would greatly appreciate your guidance. As an aside, I had a bad experience with a trainer there who was really creepy and asked extremely personal questions. Most of the gym is dedicated to the personal training space. There are never wipes or cleaning supplies convenient or restocked to clean equipment after use.

Morningside Yoga is a small little in-home studio in the Westcott area. If you're used to classes…read moreof 50+ people in the room, as I was, this Yoga studio provides a refreshingly different way to practice. The Yoga studio is an open and sunny room that overlooks a lush backyard. The classes are small - I've not been in one with more than ~8 people - which provides an atmosphere conducive to lots of one-on-one attention, and building friendships with the other regular students. The sessions themselves pull from numerous influences and doesn't fit neatly into any category. It's unique, and a little bit different every time, which keeps it always interesting. All that aside, though, the one reason why I kept going back was for the instructor. Michael, an "accomplished American master possessing great amounts of technical & philosophical knowledge combined with a genuine mystical connection to the path of yoga,"* is the owner of the studio, and his passion for Yoga is both immediately apparent and contagious. He lives Yoga. His Yoga passion is so much deeper than it-makes-my-tummy-tight-and-arms-toned, and students learn, through his classes, to practice Yoga in a similarly mindful way. He is a lifelong student (in more than just Yoga; he is also a black-belt and Buddhist meditator), which I found to be very inspiring to do the same.
