We come here on a lot of weekend mornings to drink really great pour-over coffee in a beautiful space while we get to people-watch beautiful people. If you are a coffee snob, this is a great place to while away a lazy weekend day. However, if you have a voracious appetite like I do, you really have to pregame the place with a meal and then snack on pastries or the breakfast sandwiches here. The food is good but I generally leave here fairly hungry for what I've just paid. I ordered a piece of avocado toast, and while it was healthy, yummy, cleansing, etc., etc. I am already thinking about when I can head over to Best Pizza for a slice. Where do I start? Hands down the best espresso in New York. I've had Americanos, cappuccinos, and lattes here. The coffee is always expertly made, milk perfectly steamed, and pours flawlessly executed. I've only had the avocado toast, as far as food goes, but it's awesome too. Toby's Estate has one thing that no other coffee shop in the area has; ample space and a relaxed environment. Sure, Olso, Blue Bottle, and Gimme all craft a mean cup of coffee. They lack big open space with outlets and wifi. None of them feature quite the same warm atmosphere in which to do some work. I've been here twice before and every time I've been very satisfied. The iced coffee is probably my favorite in the area. It's got a good rich flavor, maybe not the least expensive, but totally worth it. Service is fast and the staff is always nice. Don't have any complaints! It can get pretty crowded being right off Bedford, but if you can find a seat it's pretty comfy and a nice spot to do some work. They have free wifi too! Love Toby's Coffee, hate the crowds and the schlep. Great space, nice location, yadda yadda yadda...what I really care about is the coffee, and that Toby's has in spades. The beans brew as well at home as they do in the shop, and the baristas made the best flat white I've had this side of the Pacific. BUT - when you wait 10+ minutes for that coffee to get served, there's definitely too much demand at this location. They weren't chatty, they weren't slow...there was just way too much volume. Good for Toby's! Not so good for the parent in desperate need of a cup of Joe. Also, the bean selection was disappointing in the shop. Only a few bags on hand and the dates weren't great. This has also been an issue at the Chelsea location, so I fear however the supply chain is handling the bagged bean sales is not quite right. If the powers that be at Toby's HQ are reading this review, PLEASE OPEN A PARK SLOPE LOCATION. We've got Grumpy, we've got Martin...we need Toby's. At a minimum, supply beans at some of the obvious Park Slope shops like Union Market or get in with a local bakery or bagelry. We do love us some Toby's but aren't likely to go often to this location because of the looooooong wait and the disappointing bean display. I love its tall ceilings and the room is filled with natural lights. The interior design is more of an open office style with modern & artsy decor. It was 3pm Saturday afternoon and the room was already filled with people who were catching up/working. The cappuccino and flat white are above average to my taste. Great coffee shop in Williamsburg! The shop is beautifully set up with large windows that let in plenty of sunlight - plenty of seats, although it was pretty full for a Monday afternoon. There are tables next to sofas, two long tables (one which does not allow laptops on the weekends) and a few stools next to the window with a small ledge to rest your drink. There are beautiful bookshelves lining two walls. It's a good place to sit down with a book and study. There is free wifi, although there are no plugs!! I got the Moroccan Mint tea, which was great and also got the banana bread, which I wasn't really a fan of as it was a bit hard and cold. Coffee prices were on the high end at around $4-$5 for a prepared drink. I had too much coffee that day and decided against getting more. Was working in this neighborhood for about a week, and for several days this is where I worked late morning. I generally had yogurt and granola, an order of bread, and some coffee or tea (nice tea cups). Good food, friendly staff, and generally a nice place to work. Most often I was able to snag one of the seats on the couch and could sit back and relax while slowly eating and writing a grant. A downside, and why I stopped coming, is that the conversation from the people sitting nearby was too distracting - lots of people that appeared to be actors, models and movie types talking about their jobs. I once brought my headphones, but the people nearby were sitting close enough and the conversation still loud enough that it was distracting. So, I think a great place to hang out with friends and have a good meal, but not so great for focused work. read more

They offer beginner cupping classes on weekends, which is more reasonably priced than some other coffee shops (Tobys Estate - $20 for 1 hr, Joe's Coffee - $40 for 1.5 hr, Birch Coffee - $75 for 1.5 hr). This place had wonderful reviews, so I was excited to try it as a treat to myself. Ordered a vegetarian burrito, went home hungry, opened the box and lo and behold it was not a vegetarian burrito. That thing was chock full of meat and I couldn't eat any of it- I haven't eaten meat since I was 8 for religious reasons and now I'm literally unable to process it. This was solid espresso. I was in New York for New Year's weekend, and before we went to Radegast for drinks, we stopped in at Toby's Estate for some coffee. Blue Bottle is close by, but it was closed (it was New Year's day), so Toby's Estate popped up on Yelp and we decided to try it. It wasn't the most interesting espresso I drank all weekend, but it was very good and well prepared. Went here to get a matcha latte, the girl took the order and the guy barista was visibly upset about having to make a matcha for some reason and called it something like stupid green stuff loud enough so we could hear it even though we weren't standing next to the bar. I'm a long time customer, when Partners was Tobys. In short, I miss Tobys. The service has declined considerably over the years. Let me start with the good. The breakfast sandwiches continue to be stellar - I'm so glad they brought back the coffee-bacon egg sandwich. The pancetta fritta pretzel roll and the breakfast burritos are delicious. We still get their whole beans once a week and make coffee at home. They are still my favorite for home coffee. It works, when they get your order right. But most of the time now, they do not. Discretion, I order from the Caviar app for pick up. They consistently get the order wrong and usually I only see this when I get home. I've started checking at the store but every now and again I forget. It happened again today and I felt compelled to write a review. First, they substitute items when they don't have what you ordered. For example, they gave me the Elevate coffee beans (not ground even though that was the request) because they did not have Bedford. Elevate is cheaper than the Bedford, they do not give you the discount automatically. I've had to return my food order because they put chocolate chip cookies instead of my actual food (not sure why?). The person working the counter then put back the cookies in the display case to give to other customers (I had touched the cookies). Unsanitary. They had to then make my actual food. The service (with exception today when I took back the Elevate beans) when you bring something back is cold. The team working the counter makes you feel like you're bothering them. They are clearly overworked, understaffed, and not properly trained. You used to go to Tobys and everyone knew your name and the service was stellar. Now it feels like a cold shell of its former self. I hope the management team turns it around. read more

When I tried Toby's location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; I thought I may have a new top coffee shop in New York. This location has as good or better coffee than any other coffee shop in New York. It also features an awesome selection of teas. In addition, the shop provides a nice atmosphere and plenty of space to read, study, or just sit and relax. As a side note, Toby Estate is a franchise that has been imported from Australia. I have also tried Toby's locations in Flatiron and Urbanspace Vanderbilt north of Grand Central. They are very good but not as good as the Williamsburg location. Of course, it is impossible to maintain maximum quality when a shop expands or franchises. My boyfriend spotted Toby's when we were walking through the neighborhood and from the moment we stepped through the doors we knew, this is our kind of place! The design of the shop is gorgeous and you can tell that whoever owns this cafe has a passion for design and the art of coffee. We ordered the iced coffee which was $3.75 for 16 oz. The service at the counter was very friendly and we both loved that they do everything off the iPad. I know that this may be more common in NY, but we're from Honolulu where everything is always behind. The only downside of our visit, was that we don't live in Brooklyn and only had time to stop in for a coffee to go. We really wanted to spend our afternoon chillin' there but had to meet friends to go shopping. If this shop was in Honolulu, I would be here every week! I couldn't put my finger on why I didn't like this place when I first saw it open, but after going in and tasting the coffee and absorbing the experience I figured out why. Though the interior technically has that "Brooklyn" look, the atmosphere seems like it was helicoptered down into the neighborhood by a TV sitcom set designer. It is too new and they are trying too hard to bring a high end coffee experience. It's hard to look precious and overproduced when you're a half block from Blue Bottle, the king of them all. Blue Bottle somehow contextually works in the neighborhood and doesn't seem like a version of the Truman Show when you walk in. Blue Bottle seems more approachable even though will make you pour over coffee that takes forever. They don't have people weighing water and acting like they are lab technicians. We already know about coffee here, we got that education a few years ago when Grumpy, Stumptown, and La Columbe (etc) started raising the bar. It's weird for an Australian import to come a few years late and try to do what has already been done. They should have opened in another asian country that doesn't have much of a pre-existing coffee culture (Toby's is in Singapore too). Their cupping room is giving $90 lessons on how to make pour over coffee. Something I learned in 10 minutes by watching a youtube video. It's coffee making, not rocket science. But yes, on to the actual coffee. Their single origin coffees are expensive. Very expensive. I had a Guatemala pour over that was $4.50, which was their cheapest at the time. Their higher end coffees go upwards of $8 a cup. That is insanity, no matter how good or how rare the bean is. Again, back to Blue Bottle which is a block away, their coffees are usually $3.75 for the pour over single origins. It's absurd to think you can just show up and charge more than a nationally recognized "best of the best" coffee brewer. read more
