What a cool place! I visited with some girlfriends for drinks and lunch. I love the open concept of the space, it feels really inviting. We placed our orders at the bar, got our drinks, and they brought the food to our table when it was ready (which didn't take long). They run a weekly Tuesday bike ride that ends here and do tons to support the local community. From food to beer, game nights and even music, this place has it all. I highly recommend the Chicken Shawarma, beef empanada, cheese curbs and fried banana peppers. It's incredibly welcoming from a food standpoint as well (TONS of vegetarian options). I love Parts & Labor! Conveniently located in downtown Durham, there is tons of construction going on but there is still plenty of street parking and parking lots around. It's also walkable to a lot of downtown. This is a great place to come with friends. They have lots of indoor and outdoor seating. It's perfect to get tons of small plates/apps and share. They also have meals. When we went it was 8pm on a Thursday evening and not too busy but there was a line to place your food order. There is only one line where you can place your food order. It does not seem that you can do it from your table. So it takes a while to get through the line and order. That being said, after we ordered our food came out quickly. I got the Prosecco and it was not my favorite. It's on the sweeter side and I like my Prosecco dry. If I had to guess it's probably sweeter for the drinks that they mix their Prosecco with. My husband had three beer and wished the cold mugs would've been a lot colder. We order the beef empanadas (which were great), the cheese curds (also great), and bulgogi rice bowl which were okay. The kimchi on the bulgogi bowl was good but it had a ton of spicy, siracha-like sauce which was very overpowering. The food came out quick and the service was good - our one complaint was the music... for the hour and a half we sat inside and all that played was loud, Chicano rap. The location is great because it's in downtown Durham and near Boxcar so you can easily walk around to other places. The drinks were the standout, I highly recommend the Golden Road beer. It was refreshing and Mango flavored. As far as the food, it was decent but nothing that stood out. But there were a lot of options which is good. I got the wings which were fine and I shared the "hipster poutine." It's with bulgogi and kimchi, so I'm not really sure what makes Korean elements "hipster". Fantastic set up in the time of COVID! They have one point of entry where they enforce rules such as wearing masks while not seated and explain how to order food safely. Once you sit down at a table, you place your order online. The tables have a "server" side where the servers place your food about 6 feet from where you're sitting, and you sit on the other side of the long table. Some inside (multiple little areas inside), plenty outside (some hi tops and many regular picnic type tables). Bathrooms - clean and easily accessible. Pretty much all the seating is outdoors, which is nice, and even though it's all picnic tables there's a *lot* of space so they're not going to run out of places to eat anytime soon. The menu is creative and has plenty of fun vegan options, which is what drew us in. There are quite a few draft beers, but as is usual these days half of them are IPAs and other chinbeard offerings; if you want something actually drinkable you've got two choices. The biggest con for me was the portion sizes. The prices look good at first, but when your $5 taco can be consumed in two bites it's not very satisfying. Same thing for the buffalo cauliflower: it's only $4, but there were only four pieces. We dropped $50 there and left hungry. read more

This is a must-visit if you're in Durham looking for a great spot for socializing, imbibing, and enjoying the beautiful NC weather. Covid or not, the food and drink at Parts & Labor is delicious. They have a solid rotating beer selection on draft or by can, with a large majority local from NC breweries. They also have craft cocktails and bloody Mary's! The global-inspired food menu is sure to satisfy anyone's preferences, even the picky ones. To give you a taste, I'm talking about bratwurst, falafel, bulgogi tacos, chicken shawarma, latkes, chicken wings, burgers and fries! Even given the variety, which usually causes me much skepticism, quality and flavor is not compromised. On a busy day, you may have a little difficulty finding a parking spot. Most nearby parking is monitored but the good news is you can pay and keep tabs easily via the Passport app. Worst case you have to walk a block or two, but the silver lining is the unplanned exploring of neighboring businesses. This area of Durham is super walkable to other restaurants, breweries, even a bar arcade! I would especially like to applaud Parts & Labor for their streamlined execution of Covid precautions. In fact, I think they do it better than anyone else. I felt 100% safe ordering and dining on the outdoor patio this past weekend. Note - there are no heaters so dress appropriately if it's chilly! For any locals/frequents of P&L, note that the patio is no longer a free and open space. You need to check in with the host (all the way down by Motorco) to secure a table and show your ID since all orders are handled completely contactless via the website on your mobile device. Talk about diligence when it comes to safety precautions for COVID-19! Parts&Labor goes above and beyond. They are also one of the few businesses offering food and drink past 8pm in the area on a Tuesday evening. For these reasons alone, I'm a fan of Parts&Labor, but add in the fact that they are also vegan-conscious and I'm possibly a super fan. We were in town on a recent Tuesday evening and were swayed by the spacious outdoor patio seating. A masked hostess was super friendly and gave us the spiel about dining there (you order on your phone. It's pretty damn efficient and cuts down on the uncomfortable moments of waving down a busy server). We were promptly seated (after she thoroughly cleaned and disinfected seats and table) and ordered up some drinks and food. As far as wine goes, there's not much more than a Prosecco and a Pinot Noir, but they are much more beer-focused, so I get it. I couldn't resist a blood orange cider instead. The drinks came out immediately, food took much much longer, but I'm going to chalk that off to things being different in just about every restaurant these days. As I mentioned, vegan options are more than fair and I ordered the sesame udon salad (wish there were more vegetables in it as it's mainly peppers, cilantro and tiny shreds of snow peas) and a side of fries. The tofu on the salad was crispy and tasty. I'll be honest. I wasn't too into my food, but I won't judge them on something that wasn't quite to my taste. I'd gladly return and order something more interesting (vegan samosas or tacos!) next time. We enjoyed our time spent out on the patio and appreciate the efforts of the staff. 3.5 stars I went to Parts&Labor on a late afternoon and had IPA, cider, and a poutine to share. PROS: the open space. I am a sucker for the picnic table + string lights combo, which just warms up the space tremendously. Parts&Labor also took probably the best COVID precautions I've seen from a place -- they keep half the picnic table empty for waiters to be able to maintain a social distance when delivering food/drinks, and they also have this electrostatic sprayer to disinfect each picnic table. Service was also friendly. CONS: The drinks we had were alright, not super memorable especially considering we had also been to Bull City Ciderworks. I also think the food was overpriced for the area. We eventually settled on a $8-9 basic poutine which was fine (if a little salty) but given the cheaper food prices elsewhere we didn't stay for a meal. Overall it's a solid place and I'm sure it will continue to do well especially given the nice outdoor space they have, but it was one of the less memorable places we went to during our trip to Durham. read more

This is a cool looking place with an awesome vibe. I really wanted to like it but I couldn't find enough reasons to. I needed to grab a bite to eat and thought that I would give it a shot. The menu reminded me of a food truck menu. It had unique names and seemed like a fusion of cultures. I decided to get one of the special order of fries along with chicken wings. When the food arrived, it looked delicious but the flavors were so off. The chicken wings and motor oil sauce tasted like wings from the Whole Foods food bar. It was overly-fried to the point where it was dry. They were also jumbo wings which are too big for my likings. The fries were cold with no crunch. It was topped with a gravy and melted cheese. Hoo-rah? The drink menu was interesting. There weren't many options to choose from on the draft. There were a variety of can beers. Overall, it was a neat atmosphere but it didn't deliver. It's on a block that's rapidly being taken over by dystopian-looking apartment buildings, but it holds its own as a little cultural hub. Any night, you'll find a diverse crowd based on who's playing in y h e adjacent music hall. And let's face it -- the food is good. It's definitely elevated bar food, with your neo-classic truffle fries and cheese curds alongside signature creations like brussels slaw and tuna sliders. You're best off coming with a group and trying a little of everything. Their beer, wine, and cocktail selection is also lovely albeit pretty standard. Bartenders are knowledgeable and will help you find what you want. There are plenty of great seating options both inside and outside.
