I have an old 1924 house that needed some work done on its door. I called Pasadena Lock Shop and spoke to the owner, Steve. We agreed on an appointment day and time. He was very prompt, in fact, came a little early. He looked at the locking system and told me immediately what it needed. He began to get himself ready to do the work. However, I had to stop him because I was getting some major work done in the room the door was located, and the workers were planning on removing the door to sand and finish it. They told me the door would be ready in two days. Steve could have been upset to have to make a second trip to my house, but he kindly and professionally understood the situation and agreed to return. He did, however, remove a mechanism that was suspect in order to take it to his shop. While working on it, he realized that it would have to be replaced, so he called me to ask for my approval. When he returned, he was on time - actually, early again. He began working to install the replacement part and the rest of the lock. As with old hardware, he needed to adjust and readjust. Scrape and rescrape. Tug and pull and twist and drill in order to get the mechanism to work like new. I showed him that when the door was closed hard, the door would fail to latch, so he fixed that. I showed him that when the door was closed, it would still shimmy instead of sit firmly in its place. He fixed that. Finally, in order to get my key to work better, he replaced the keyhole. All along as he was working, I could tell he had an appreciation for the age of my house and what it represented. It's not an "historic" house, but it does have character. Because of that, it seemed important to him to make sure the hardware and the work befitted the house. I feel strongly about the power of word of mouth when it comes to businesses and craftspeople. There are so many rip-off artists out there or people who treat customers as though they should be glad that the worker deigned to work for them. Steve was not like that at all. He was honest, respectful, diligent, and mindful. I would call for the services of Pasadena Lock Shop any day, and I would have full confidence that Steve would act in my best interest. read more

What was a relatively simple task of installing new locks on a house and garage and rekeying all of them to the same key, turned into an abandoned, half-finished job without any follow up from PLS regarding its completion. In retrospect, my crucial mistake in dealing with PLS was: (a) allowing PLS to special order a knob set when what I wanted (and thought I was getting) was readily available at Home Depot; and (b) putting too much faith in the vendor to handle their business while being distracted with mine. PLS is probably fine for making duplicate keys and what not, but I would strongly urge you to either provide your own parts when contracting them to do an installation or otherwise be prepared to stay on them like a vulture over roadkill. read more
