My experience with the Pasadena Police Department after losing over $20,000 in a malfunctioning bank ATM has been deeply disappointing and concerning. After the bank admitted ATM issues were a "common problem" at their branch, refused to return my deposited checks, and failed to provide a transaction receipt, I was told to simply call the customer hotline on the side of the ATM. I called Pasadena police from the branch and waited over 30 minutes--only for officers to eventually arrive at my residence more than an hour later after I called them back and said I'm leaving the bank. When officers finally responded, they immediately and arbitrarily dismissed my case as a civil matter without investigation, review of evidence, or any real due diligence. Notably, one of the responding officers told me that he used to work at a bank and proceeded to "guess" what would happen to my missing checks, instead of conducting an impartial, professional inquiry. I had to point out that he was there as a guardian of public justice for the City of Pasadena--not to serve as a spokesperson or theorist for banks. This was a glaring conflict of interest, and I specifically documented the incident as part of my formal complaints. The frustration only escalated when I tried to file those complaints. Lieutenant Christopher Kirby in the Professional Standards Unit mishandled my case, ignoring and then perfunctory dismissing my complaints and claiming that I should submit all future complaints through the city's proprietary portal to ensure they are documented and tracked as mandated by law. The portal in question is opaque and limits a citizen's ability to keep records or interact meaningfully. Despite my raising the issue of policy violations, ignored conflicts of interest, and lack of thorough investigation, Lt. Kirby responded with vague assurances that "proper protocol" was followed--never citing specific policy or government code and never addressing the substance of my concerns. The department's overall approach was riddled with delays, bureaucratic runaround, and a blatant avoidance of responsibility--both at the scene and through the formal complaint process. If you suffer financial loss in the City of Pasadena, do not expect meaningful support, transparency, or accountability from this department. My experience exposes major gaps in public service, consumer protection, and internal integrity. I urge city leadership to urgently review police practices regarding financial crime, conflicts of interest, public complaint processes, and departmental transparency. read more

You always hope you won't have a run-in with the police. You don't want to be a victim of a crime (or a suspect, for that matter.) But sometimes you need the police, and if you have a good experience, you are grateful they were there. I programmed the telephone number for the Pasadena Police Department into my phone a couple of months ago, after I heard what I feared were gunshots in my neighborhood. (Come to think of it, I never found out what happened that night, but I heard sirens almost immediately after I called - quick response time!) Since then, I've only called one other time...until last Wednesday. I was in a pretty bad accident on the 134 - a motorcycle hit another car and then slammed into the back of my car. My rear windshield exploded and I hit my brakes, watching in horror as the motorcyclist flew through the air and landed two freeway lanes away. I jumped out of my car with my cell phone in hand and ran over to the man, who was unresponsive. I truly thought he might be dead. I had already dialed 911 but wasn't able to get through. As several off-duty medical personnel stopped to assist, I moved my car to the shoulder and continued dialing 911, as did several other people around me. None of us could get through. Either the line rang endlessly, or the call wouldn't go through at all. After trying 311, my ex, and even Masa to no avail, I was shaking and in tears. I finally remembered I had the number for the Pasadena Police Department in my phone and called, praying that someone would help me. As soon as the dispatcher answered, I blurted out that I had been in a bad accident and couldn't get through to 911. I begged to be patched through. The dispatcher asked if I was hurt; I told her I was okay and she promised to stay on the line with me while she dialed 911. We waited for five straight minutes as the line rang and we received a standard message over and over: "You have reached CHP's 911 Emergency Line. All operators are currently busy, please stay on the line." Throughout my panicky fright, the dispatcher was reassuring and professional, eventually calming me down. When we finally got through, we learned help was already on the way. The dispatcher checked once again that I was okay before she left the line. Not a single one of the half-dozen people standing on the side of the freeway managed to get through to 911 except for me. One person actually tried to get connected by the Burbank Police Department, but they did not stay on the line and she never got through. The dispatcher that helped me that evening exemplified a dedication to service that reflects on her entire department, so I am giving five stars to the Pasadena Police. It is a mixed bag with the Pasadena PD. I have had some very professional handling of matters that I called and on other occasions I have felt they treated a serious incident with slight regard. On one such occasion a few years ago it was New Years eve at 1:30am. I was laying on my sofa watching TV when a guy walks through my front door and starts to walk into my living room. I was certain that it was a snatch and grab, the guy wasn't drunk. I chased him out and called the police. When they arrived they treated it as if it was nothing and a waste of their time. My dads vehicle was stolen and completely totaled in a very traumatic event. Police officer, a woman officer, didn't believe him that it was stolen. And gave him a very hard time at questioning. Later on, the video footage showed that it was indeed stolen and a completely different person from my father. In these tumultous times, our Police officers and Highway Patrol, etc. need our support. I am entirely grateful to Pasadena officer Yunan, who attended us after a street collision. April 13,2021. A Highway Patrol was in the vicinity first, and came to check on me and the other driver. He called Pas. P.D. and stayed with us until Officer Yunan came on the scene. Got arrested here once, pre-COVID-19 days, and they treated me very well. The cells were also great, good amount of room, and very clean. Food was pretty good, handcuffs were a bit tight, but it does the job, so that's OK. The officers were also kind and funny, always cracking jokes and treating you like a human being. Last review was marked funny by a police officer, no doubt. There was nothing funny about you letting a dangerous driver off the hook who deliberately hit me with their car. Asked the on scene officer to do a DUI test on the driver and his response was "Are you drunk?" I was a pedestrian walking. Wasn't drunk and even if I was I'm not the one driving a fucking car. He tried to convince me not to file a report aswell. AND he said he wouldn't be able to get to it until a week later cuz his "weekend is coming up". You guys are a complete failure at keeping people safe. Had many witnesses who explained what happened and they just let him drive off. Pretty sure they knew him somehow because it seemed like it wasn't his first time dealing with the police. This morning a homeless man came to my front door and tried to come in (tried the door handle). Luckily it was locked! He then started ringing the door bell and banging on the door. I opened the door and here before me was a homeless man, older with scragly greying hair, dirty beard, one sandal on, the other barefoot. He asked me for a cup of coffee and I nicely told him that I don't have one and I can't help him. He started up with me and I told him he needs to leave. He blurted out some obscenities and I very strongly told him to leave NOW! After a minute or so, he got it and left. The guy has mental issues and as ugly as it was this morning, it would've been very, very bad if he would've found his way into my house! I called the Pasadena Police Department and spoke to the Watch Commander. He listened intently, asked a few questions then told me he'd send someone by to pick the homeless guy up. I'm very impressed with the professionalism, his concern and above all, he wants to help. ATTENTION SUPERVISORS / commanding officers: Its time to start supervising your officers that patrol Old town Pasadena. On Saturday Night: May 5th *I was almost run over by two police officers both on motorcycles as they blatantly ran red light as they traveled at a high rate of speed (approximately 60MPH *zero exaggeration, and I'm trained at gauging speed) Both officers were traveling w/out their lights or sirens on (My friend and I were midway across the street w/ a walk). *Please note that there was not emergency or the officers to attend to as they pulled over to the side of the road. *Interesting is how many officers around this area drive as if the traffic laws do not apply to them. My alarm company called to tell me I had an alarm in the house that went off... I was at work in downtown I couldn't go to the house so I called the Pasadena PD to ask them if they could drive by and check on my place just Incase there was a break in... they asked for some information and they arrived in a few minutes at property. I had a brief encounter with a traffic cop who was blocking the street in which I live. I stopped to kindly to tell him that I lived on the street that was closed. He started to yell at the top of his lungs at me and said "no"! I then asked what time would I be able to return when the road is open? He yelled even louder at me and said "NO". The answer to everything is no! I pulled over to wait and watched him yell at more people and mocked their reactions for another 30 min. Very rude and not there to protect and serve. These assholes gave me a bullshit ticket and wrote the wrong Penal Code on the ticket. Fortunately, the judge dismissed it when I fought it, but an utter waste of time. Add to the fact that the Officer had an attitude, so typical of motorcycle cops. I've seen this guy pull over people because their tires screeched when pulling into the Bank of America parking lot on Lake and Colorado. Ridiculous. YOUR TRAFFIC CONTROL IS ATROCIOUS! I think you had better go back to the LAPD for training as they are able to handle Hollywood Bowl and Greek Theatre parking perfectly well directing traffic in a smooth way so that cars get to the freeway unimpeded for long stretches of time by local traffic lights.. We were at the Coldplay concert at the Rosebowl which was great except we missed the entire first band because of your inept handling of traffic. Once we hit Pasadena...we were in our car for 1 1/2 hours trying to get into the parking lot...and guess what...the same thing happened leaving the venue...1 1/2 hours to get to the frigging freeway...really? Note - This review is STRICTLY for their RECORDS DEPARTMENT. I went in to get a Clearance Letter that I need for a visa to teach in Korea, and the front desk cadets were really cool and helpful. They were both friendly and quick. Monterey Park PD made me wait days in the past to get this letter (a quick computer scan and a printed out letter is all it is to say you don't have any crimes on your record) but Pasadena gave it to me on the spot in less than 10 minutes. Homeboy even was cool enough to charge me just the $10 fee even though I got 2 copies. I was impressed fo sho. Parking after 4:30 in their garage off Marengo is $3, so you might try to snag a meter instead if you're not gonna be there long. read more

I now understand why the review numbers are so low. I started the morning by working myself through the maze of the telephone system (don't try to find dispatch or operator- it isn't there). I finally reached someone in financial crimes to ask the officer how to handle the receipt of a counterfeit $50 bill by a local Pasadena charity. The person with whom I finally spoke offered to switch me to dispatch so an officer could come to my home and take the report. Since I had a number of engagements that day, I offered to bring the counterfeit bill down to the Police Department later in the day. I arrived around 4 and the two officers in the lobby were uniformly (all puns intended) unhelpful. After they were unable to reach any detective, I explained that the department had earlier offered to send an officer to my home, and since I would be home the rest of the day that would be fine. I explained that the crime occurred in Pasadena at a local charity. My personal Pasadena address, however, is located two blocks into the County (despite Pasadena mailing address). (The young man actually said- two blocks could creep into two miles... They could look it up on a map.) The desk officer and clerk said I could wait for an officer to come to the main station. I asked how long that would be and they said between 15 minutes and 90 minutes or possibly longer. Apparently I was just supposed to stand (there are no chairs) in the waiting area or come back at another time, pay parking again, and be willing to stand around and wait. Neither the sworn officer or the clerk was willing to take the report (no one else was in line) or otherwise help. I checked with a relative (a retired deputy chief in a neighboring department) who says they send officers out to get reports for local crimes all the time. No wonder crime rate is down- no way to report them. read more
