We started with the Pu Pu Platter, which came with veggie spring rolls, crab rangoon, coconut shrimp, chicken pot stickers, and Huli Huli chicken wings. You don't necessarily have to get one of everything, so if you really like the pot stickers, for example, you can double up on those and substitute something else. Everything we had was really good! I also loved the presentation. It came out on a spinning tray with a little warmer in the middle, which was such a cool touch and really added to the tiki-bar experience. I know a tiki bar is supposed to have a dark atmosphere, but it was so dark that we had a hard time reading the menu and had to use the flashlights on our phones. 10th Annual Sacramento Aloha Festival 2021…read more Aloha kākou! This year the Aloha Fest was held at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. I've never attended the location at the Cal Expo but the location in Auburn was a beautiful park-like venue with lots of greenery outside in the open air. It was a nice place to hold the event. The weather was sunny and in the low 80's. Perfect weekend for ending the summer! Folks were out in their lawn chairs just enjoying the day. There was no shortage of entertainment (live native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander), fun workshops, Aloha merchandise, and delicious Polynesian food!!! There were resource vendor booths, educational exhibits, and an arts and crafts Keiki Korner, and lots more. Restrooms were nearby and the grounds was wheelchair accessible. We attended to watch my boss's little keiki participate on stage with the KŪHAI HĀLAU O KANOHEAOKALIKOLAUA'E PĀ 'ŌLAPA KAHIKO dance group led by Kumu Hula, Nohea Macugay. We also participated (attempted) at the Tahitian Workshop with the VAIPUNA NO TE HERE dance group led by Director, Stephanie Manuel. My daughter belongs in the dance group and was part of the workshop. -whew- what a workout. Also, saw my favorite band, Island Sunset Band, on stage. My favorite because "Unko" is a guitar player (married to Yelper, "Aunty" Ronnie B) This was a much needed coming together and made me miss the islands. The students are all such a fun bunch. The dance parents are so helpful and have a great camaraderie. My family loves everything about Manuia so much that we find ourselves there pretty much everyday of the week! Manuia offers dances from the islands of Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, Hawaii, and New Zealand. My daughter loves them all and can't pick a favorite! With the help of her teachers, she recently choreographed her very own Ori Tahitian routine! Manuia recitals happen every Spring and Fall. I can't express enough what a great show Manuia puts on! Opportunities for both private (think birthday parties and luaus) and public shows (such as with the NBA and MLB) are in abundance throughout the year. Opportunities to compete are scattered throughout the year as well. All are voluntary, but we find ourselves signing up most of the time! We honestly love Manuia that much! The pricing is like no other. As of the date of this review, one flat fee per month and you have access to every single class! There are additional costs to participating in recitals, shows, and competitions. Most additional costs come from costumes and registration fees, but again are all voluntary. Every experience and show have been memorable. The most memorable experience for us? When my daughter won first place in her category at Manahere! That one is pretty hard to top. Runner ups are when she performed at an NBA halftime show and all of the shows that my daughter, husband, and I performed in. Oh yes, my husband and I are students as well! When time permits, I participate in their Mehura class. I love, love, love dancing with the ladies! Although requiring lots of control and grace, the movements are slower compared to the Ori Tahitian dancing. I am not much of a dancer, but I enjoy it so much still. At the very least, it's an amazing workout. My husband and I attend a Tahitian drumming class weekly. It has been a lot of fun! I can honestly go on and on about Manuia.
