Anything from the tandoori list is great. I especially like the kebobs and specialty curries.

Andy decided to have date night last night because he worked late and thought I was mad at him for working late. We were going to go to Cafe of India in Harvard Square, but couldn't find parking so we just drove north until we found an Indian Restaurant, out of hunger desperation. This turned out to be a mistake. I'm going to lead with the one bright spot of the meal, or server was very friendly and nice, which is not something you can say about a lot of Indian servers. Oddly, this translated in a great reduction of water service over most Indian restaurants. I actually finished my glass once before they came back around. It took forever to order and then even longer to get our appetizers. The appetizer sampler plate was pretty good, but the filling on the samosas was a bit too mushy, something off about the texture. I had Chicken Tikka Saag and it was okay. Not very hot in temperature or spice level, and the greens were a bit bitter. Andy's Lamb Tikka Masala was "bland for Indian food". It "wasn't piping hot, but it wasn't cold". The garlic Naan was okay, the garlic tasted a bit burned/bitter. Just a meh experience overall. read more

I ate here last night and had the Kabuli Channa: basically the simplest dish you can get, chickpeas, curry, rice. And it was good. The service was great, we (a group of 8) were constantly being attended to by a busboy, a waiter, and the owner of the place. My experiences at Indian restaurants are kind of few and far between. Conditions have to be right for me to be in the mood for Indian fare. Something about the stars being in correct alignment, etc. Passage To India is a good place to get your curry on, though. It's small and intimate. The decor is authentic. The restaurant has a decent selection of libations, and the menu is a little more "upscale" than most other Indian restaurants I've sampled in Boston. We each ordered a Singha. I'd never had Thai beer before, and I found that it really wasn't so different from most other beers I've had before. I went safe and ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. My dining companion had the Chicken Korma. Both were tasty, though the chicken looked a little strange. Totally edible, though. The garlic naan was yummy as well. The service was extremely fast. I'm talking about getting all our food approximately 7 minutes after ordering. The staff was also very attentive, coming by often and asking after our meal. At the end, they seemed a bit surprised that we didn't take the leftovers home, but Indian leftovers don't really travel well to an ice cream shop and a bowlilng alley. My old lunch buddy wanted to meet up for Indian food after his recent traditional Thanksgiving. For several years we endured the Ambassador in Woburn, which Was the worst Indian food I've had, but the location was annoyingly convenient and even at it's worst the food still satisfied some spice addiction or craving. So now we're planning to improve things and meet at a place close to Davis square called Namaskar, but we discovered it was closed due to a Pravit [sic] party on Sunday during lunch. We were still craving Indian food and determined to find it, so we ended up at the Passage to India. Another place found out of convenience, but actually worst than Ambassador. So we drove a few blocks down to Passage to India. The parking spaces in the back were poorly marked and I nervously assumed they were associated to the restaurant. The parking lot entrance is dangerous and might require a little teamwork if someone is trying to exit at the same time. The buffet consisted of some pretty standard things, but very poor attempts. The fried things were dried up and basically inedible. The chicken was dried and mealy, obviously not cooked in the stew. This might have been from yesterday's tandori chicken batch. The cabbage dish was a watery sloppy thing. The naan was oily and undercooked, the basmati rice was unspiced, gummy and tasted reheated and again dry or stale. Otherwise, the place was clean and the waiter was polite and nice. My wife actually enjoyed one of the fried things that turned out to be cauliflower, and she usually hates cauliflower. I grabbed my fried stuff from the same industrial stainless container and got rubbery fried paneer, another loss I suppose. My thoughts are that the guy opening the store for lunch cut too many corners and the chef wasn't in the mood to cook fresh food. Probably was not their finest moment. read more

With one word this place has permanently ruined my ability to enjoy an entire class of Indian restaurants. After discovering Guru the Caterer I stopped ordering from here, but I felt like walking tonight. The following is an excerpt from their menu: "Chicken Chili Masala (extra Hot) boneless diced chicken tandoori cooked with spices, green chilies, onions, and peppers and ketchup." To avoid ketchup sauce for dinner, I chose the old favorite, Tikka Masala. To my dismay, I realized that the sauce is, essentially, wholly ketchup based. As I eat it becomes closer and closer to tasting like McDonalds secret sauce on rice. The Tamarind chutney has always been treacle, It increasingly starts to bother me that the green chutney is also sweetened. Over the years I have had similar sugary preparations of Chicken Tikka Masala at many other Indian restaurants. My unfortunate conclusion is that many of them also use ketchup. Why did Pasage have to list their secret ingredient on the menu? I don't think they should change the recipe - people rave about this stuff - but from this point onward I will never be able to enjoy Chicken Ketchup Masala again, not only from here, but from anywhere else. *Makes sad face* This was my first foray into Indian food and I thought it was decent but I've had so much better. But I digress. I ordered here with a friend twice. The first time, the food came after a call at the hour and fifteen minute mark as well as an additional ten; our estimated wait time was 45 minutes. Not. Cool. Then on top of that, they forgot an order of the Garlic Naan that we ordered. Everything else we ordered was decent, and I was ridiculously hungry so I was content in the moment. About a month later, we ordered from them again (last night). They came in about the same time period as last time and this time forgot one of three Garlic Naan's, Aloo Tikki, and the complimentary order of Meat Samosas Foodler gave us. The food was also cold-ish when it arrived. Naan was hard and the only heat from my Chicken and Mushroom was from the spices. *Severe sad face* I am a growing boy and don't want my food late and cold. The people who have good ratings are terribly lucky and I envy them. read more

Good quality Indian place, we are British so obviously have a real need for good Indian food on a regular basis and this place never disappoints. Fish pakora is excellent, as is every curry we have had, most recently the tandoori shrimp masala. Reasonably prompt delivery and decent portions. read more

I have eaten here four times over the course of five years (I used to live in Maine). Three times the food was off the charts fantastic (thier malai kofta being outstanding) and once the food was weirdly terrible. Thus, the four star rating instead of the whole hog. It is my favorite place in Boston, so far, but I keep looking. As a vegetarian I can't speak to the meats, but the number and quality of the veggie dishes is great. (are great? I can't say anything about the delivery service because I've only ever sat down in the restaurant for a meal. Their vegetable samosas are top notch and the spicy onion chutney is amazing. If you order only one thing, I'd say go for those. The rice pudding is also very good. As far as the entrees go, the ones I've had (chicken vindaloo, chicken curry, kabuli chana, potato naan, garlic naan) have all been very solid. If you like spicy food, order spicy and it will not disappoint. If you're not a fan of the spice, definitely tell them to tone down the spice. Service isn't amazingly fast, but it is friendly and the restaurant is clean. I'll definitely go again. read more

I brought my parents, who live in India, to this restaurant and they absolutely loved it. It is very authentic and flavorful Indian food. The lunch portions are a little on the smaller side for the price of Indian food in Boston, but its definitely worth it. In the past I have had naan, paratha, samosas (both meat and veggie), mutter paneer, chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo and Kabuli channa. Everything is delicious, the chicken vindaloo does have a very fake coloring but the meal itself is great. Spice level is good. Service is fast and decent but I mostly do take out from this place. read more

I found Passage to India a few years ago when I moved to Cambridge to go to Lesley University. It meets my Indian food criteria and then some. I love chick peas and am not super into spicy so their Khabula Channa gets 5 stars. The veggie samosas are crisp and tasty, great nann, chapati and veggie pakora I have gotten my food delivered via foodler.com where if you spend $20 you get a free order of samosas and and let me tell you, they are beyond speedy. Sitting in is fine although I prefer to gorge myself on Indian food in the privacy of my own home. Sunday brunch at Passage to India is more than satisfactory and very affordable although you may have to take a nap for the rest of your Sunday. read more

Had lunch here today, a little late, around 3... the place was nicely quiet, and having been told by every place in Harvard Square that they were closed, I was delighted to find a place open and so close to the T. The food was great... vegetable korma, another chick pea dish plus a plate of veggie appetisers. The soda, less so... heavily watered down ginger ale from a soda fountain, and no free refill. The only real complaint is that the take out container for the leftovers was totally inadequate, and my attempt to rectify this before I left fell on deaf ears. I would totally go here again, but I'd order much less food just to avoid another take-out failure. That these guys are doing take out makes me wonder what the hell was going on. read more

I really like this place. It's small and intimate. The staff is very polite and friendly and the menu has excellent selection of food. Their chicken vindaloo is really delicious and really spicy. Since this is pretty much the only Indian joint I could find that delivered without going through a service that jacks up the prices before charging you to deliver, three stars. The food was decent enough for delivery. The appetizers were fried to point of not being able to tell what they were. The matter paneer was nice, I could taste everything individually as well as the sauce so that was good. Nothing really stands out and says "OMG I have to have this again!!" though. Ordering was fun. Apparently the out of state area code of my cell baffled the person on the other end. I repeated it several times and they still wrote it down wrong :-\ Still, could have been worse, we could have received another person's order. I've been here a couple of times now, thanks to the deals on Groupon. Even without the discount though, I would say that Passage to India is a good bang for your buck. I mean the food is not amazing, but they definitely give you a lot of it. If you order the "dinner" you get a soup, bread, entree and dessert for like $15 which I'm pretty sure is about the price they charge for just an entree at other Indian places. I've had the Chicken Makni and the Lamb Biriyani. The Chicken Makni was pretty good, although I ordered it hot and it was not even a little bit spicy. I wouldn't necessarily say bland, but the color of the sauce was a little bright, which was kind of weird-- maybe almost a little bit neon. The Lamb Biriyani was slightly better. The lamb was incredibly tender which was a nice surprise and the yogurt accompaniment definitely heightened the flavor of the dish. Without the yogurt sauce, I would say it was just "okay." The garlic naan is generally better than I've had it at other places. Hot, crispy and chewy all at the same time, it is absolutely covered with garlic and pretty much guarantees you will not be making out with anyone anytime soon. The star of the meal at Passage to Indian has always been the dessert. The Kulfi ice cream is DELICIOUS. Filled with chunks of nuts and overflowing with the flavors of cardamom. The rice pudding was also good, although the flavor was very similar to the ice cream. Overall, PTI deserves a solid three stars. Go there, or not. I don't know that it's going to add much to your life either way. read more

I think it is kind of funny that the reviewer before me said that he/she doesn't know why this restaurant is empty. I do! It is HORRIBLE. Oh man, I would rather have eaten one of those Trader Joe's box indian meals, because those are pretty good, and this food was HORRIBLE. We had the misfortune of trying their buffet, and it was pathetic. When I saw the 5 choices, I should have walked out. Good lesson to me: Follow my intuition. There wasn't even a regular curry - just two gross sweet tikka masala with chunks of tasteless chicken breast. No tandoori or naan. I didn't even finish my plate of food, it was THAT BAD. To the owner: Why do you open up a restaurant and put out bad, tasteless food? Like, I don't get it. If I had a restaurant I would make sure I had tasty food. I mean, this was just plain BAD. Indian delivery sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I know that there is no real reason why it would be, I just have images of cold lumpy coagulated saag. Despite my reservations my boyfriend and I ordered delivery the other night and now I'm a believer. The food got to our house quickly and arrived steaming hot. We had the non-vegetarian dinner for two which came with a tub of chicken tikka masala, lamb korma, chicken saag, a huge tub of rice, two soups, paratha and that yogurt sauce. All for $25. That was insane. We had enough food for three meals. The lamb korma was my favorite. The lamb was tender and moist and the sauce was generous with the cashews. It could have been spicier but we forgot to ask for it to be non-gora. My only disappointment was the rice which wasn't seasoned with cloves and spices the way that I love. But was still a nice quality long grain and cooked perfectly. Will definitely order again when the Indian craving strikes and I'm not willing to get dressed to leave the house. read more

This has one of the most convenient locations of any restaurant - right across from the Porter T station, but that's the best thing it has going for it over other Indian places. I used to dine-in and take-out from here, but the chicken was never cooked well enough to my satisfaction. I would get something like chicken tikka masala, and I'd got the impression that they cooked the sauce then dropped some already-cooked white meat into it. The curry flavor never seeps into the meat, and it tastes dry. So I find it's best to come here for the cheap weekend mid-day buffet. I come in with lower expectations, easily grab a booth, and fill up on naan, pakoras/samosas, and whatever random curry dishes they have that day. The entrees are much better, actually, in the buffet than when ordered off the menu. It must be an economy-of-scale thing where they can slow-cook the meat with the extra prep time. I love this place. I wish it was not so pricey, I would eat there more often. We have gone in to the restaurant twice and ordered through Foodler once. Dine in experience, it was nice the place is clean and was not too loud. We were seated and cared for by the waitstaff in a satisfactory manner. The food was great. Our family is a combo of vegetarians and meat lovers so we have had both chicken and vegetarian meals and appetizers. I found that the portions are perfectly sized, the food tastes wonderful and the people are very nice. Delivery experience: We were very hungry when we ordered so the long wait we felt may have been due to that. Also, I had made a mistake in the order and called to correct it, there was no issue with that and I was glad for this. The food was perfect, didn't feel like it set out or took long to get to us. My son is partial to their chicken naan and I am a huge fan of their appetizers, my husband loves the Chicken Tikka. read more

How to say this in a manner that it not too disgusting. ah what the hell. It's sooooo good going in, it's sooooo bad coming out. Delicious food, however I noticed right away that the masala seemed overly oily. And that was it's demise. Oh masala I could not stop eating you as you were a complete and utter mouth orgasm. But you failed when it came to not making me sick and running to the bathroom a meer 20 times. So weigh the pro's and cons folks. Very good food (although I have only had the masala, naan, and a coke..and isn't coke always good whever you go), fast delivery. Ok so I've only ordered delivery from this place, so I can't speak for the waitstaff or the decor. I've passed this place a hundred times and never tried it... never looked like much to it. My buddy that works right across the street at Liquor World frequents this place and recommended it to me. I'm really glad I took the suggestion because it was probably the best Indian food I've ever had for the money. The basic chicken curry was prepared medium in spiciness and cooked to perfection. The chicken here is nothing to be afraid of, unlike most other places, its all white meat and VERY VERY Tender... they give you an appropriate amount too, not too much and never too little. The naan bread here is super soft and perfect for dipping in the spicy chutney they give you with every meal. The one thing that makes me put 5 stars on a delivery order is that you can taste each individual ingredient.. the garlic the coriander.. mmm thats what makes good eats... and 5 stars read more

I'm a little spoiled when it comes to Indian food - a friend in college took me home many weekends, and her mother cooked multi-course meals for us. I can't help compare any Indian restaurant to her cooking. Passage to India really is pretty good. I came here with friends on a Thursday night. We were seated promptly, and the host brought us some little fried thingies and sauce. Our appetizer and main dishes arrived quickly and were quite tasty. I'm especially a fan of samosas, and wasn't disappointed. Of course, I've had better, but Passage to India is a pretty good substitute when I can't get home cooked. read more

Well, I do the delivery, take out and even on occasion, dine in. For some reason the food always seems to taste better when you eat it there. I usually get the Kabuli Chana and 90% of the time it is fabulous. The other 10, it might be a little too spicy or a little too bland, or the potatoes might be a little undercooked. Eh. The staff is always courteous and attentive. Everyone (meat-eaters) who I've ever made eat there has had no complaints and gone back for seconds. All in all, I likes it. read more

Found this place after we moved from Central to Porter, and we needed a new Indian place that delivered. (They share the same delivery people as the next door, Wok and Roll). Pleasantly surprised, their Medium Spicy is pretty darn hot, and Hot is 'hold on to your britches!'. I wish there was a spice between Mild and Medium... that would be PERFECT! That all being said, my standard 'test this indian place out' meal is Chicken Tikka Masala and Naan. Their CTM is good... hit or miss lately. I think they may have changed suppliers or chefs, however it has been a slight disappointment lately. Fast fast fast. You order food... its ready and often delivered 20-40 minutes after you hang up or order on foodler.com big wins in my book! The Lamb/Meat Samosa is quite tasty, not overly doughy and not super deep fried. The garlic naan has a healthy dose of garlic and isn't over cooked or over buttered. End of the day, this place is a good 'saftey' of ours. If we don't want to cook and want to order in, its usually: Chinese? Pizza? Thai? or Indian? I've only done delivery from Passage to India... so I can't say much for ambiance, but the plastic wear they send is great! What impressed me most is that despite the half dozen other Indian restaurants between my place in Somerville and PTI is that PTI is the only one who would deliver to me on Winter Hill. SCORE. The food was better than the little baggies of Indian stews you prepare yourself out of the pouches; Fresher. The rice was fabulous and smelled wonderful each and every time. I never had an issue with the food until I tried the Garlic Naan and I almost died of Garlic-itis. Holy crap. This is not for novice garlic eaters. I'd order from here any day. read more

My second experience with Passage to India definitely warrants an updated review and at least one more star. It had been a while since we'd been there, and with the panoply of Indian restaurants that deliver to us, when we picked them off the list at Foodler we honestly didn't remember which place it was. And I'm glad we didn't. I'm also glad to se that my last review mentioned the onion chutney. We got it again this time and it was, as before absolutely fantastic. At least as good as that from our previous favorite: India Castle. The rest of the food was certainly better than my previous buffet experience as well. Bland is certainly not the word I would use to describe it, and the kabuli chana I ordered was delicious, spiced to perfection, and actually as hot as I ordered it. I'm so tired of having to talk Indian places into giving me food that's actually spicy that I was almost taken aback when my first bite was actually something close to the 'hot' that I had asked for. The aloo paratha that I ordered with it was also quite delicious, and I've generally found the paratha in the Boston area to be somewhat lacking. After this new experience I'm definitely ready to give Passage to India another shot. Especially since it's so conveniently located for me. With luck, the next meal I order from them will be as good as this one does and I'll be able to add another star onto my review. read more

I hate to be the grouchy one here, but Passage to India is the worst Indian food I've come across in the boston area. Sure, it's edible, and I wasn't sick afterward, but the walk down the street to Davis Square's stunning Namaskar would be well worth your while. Alternatively, Inman square's very cheap and very good Punjabi Dhaba is WAY better than passage to india. Sorry, PTI. I went there for a lunch buffet, which was lukewarm, the chicken was mediocre. To me there is nothing better on a rainy (or snowy) night than Indian food. It's the perfect comfort food. Normally I get food from Diva (in Davis) but I wanted to change it up and try a new place (& they were listed on Foodler). I'm so glad I did! Prices are more reasonable here and they delivered within 45 minutes (or so) and the food was HOT! Like REALLY HOT - YEY!!!!! I don't know how they managed to keep it that hot for delivery, but I am not complaining one bit! From reading other reviews - it seems like they fixed the delivery issue. The curries were decent - not amazing, but nothing to have major issue with either. I think overall Diva has slightly better food - for a much more expensive price. This is the perfect place for some takeout/delivery on a cold rainy night. read more

Ordered a feast from this place for delivery. All of the food was delicious. We ordered: garlic naan, vegetable samosas & pakora, aloo tiki, tandoori chicken, chicken tika masala, and Dahl maharini. The order came with four containers of rice that were so tightly packed that we will have leftovers for days. At the end of the meal everyone was full and satisfied. This place is wildly inconsistent. I've ordered (for delivery) the same dish (shrimp dopiaza) three times and gotten completely different dishes each times. The first was mediocre, the second much better, and the most recent nearly inedible, with shrimp that tasted not only frozen, but *old* frozen, like it had been dug out of the very back of the freezer after having been forgotten for months. Gross. At least one thing is consistent -- their soggy naan! Dopiaza is one of my favorite dishes and this is one of the only places nearby that has it on their menu, but I definitely won't be going back. Bummerrrrrrr. read more

Today was my first time in this restaurant even though I pass by it every day! We ordered the lamb korma and the curry chicken, both delicious!!! The lamb korma was simply amazing!!
