We absolutely loved our stay at Grand Wailea. We were upgraded for free to an oceanfront view,…read morewhich made the trip feel extra special. Our room was clean, comfortable, and very nice, and every staff member we interacted with was friendly and hardworking. We explored many other hotels while we were on Maui, and honestly, none of them compared to Grand Wailea. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, expansive, and classic. I don't agree with the reviews saying it feels run down. It isn't ultra-modern, but it has a grand, timeless, classic resort feel. The beach out front is amazing. We explored a lot of beaches on Maui, and I never found one I liked better than the beach at Grand Wailea. The resort itself also feels unmatched in size and beauty. No other hotel we saw had the same expansive grounds, pools, landscaping, and overall resort feel. That said, the biggest downside was how much everything felt overpriced. I understand Maui and luxury resorts are expensive, but Grand Wailea sometimes felt like it was nickel-and-diming guests. Valet parking is $75 per day, and when you add in tipping every time you retrieve a rental car, it gets frustrating fast. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, valet was also very slow. One night we waited over 25 minutes. The valet staff were clearly working hard, but they seemed understaffed for the volume of guests. The food pricing was also hard to justify. At the marketplace/counter-service options, we saw coffee for $7.50, hot dogs for $26, hamburgers for $32, and 12-inch pizzas around $30. You also often have to wait in a long line, and if one person is making coffee drinks, it slows the entire line down. Olivine looks beautiful, but the prices were extremely high, including a personal sausage pizza for $38. Considering the mixed reviews, we could not justify eating there. While we were there for over a week, the resort restaurants looked quite empty every day. I truly think if the restaurant prices were even 30% lower, many more guests would stay on property to eat instead of walking across the street to places like Manoli's or Island Gourmet. The pool area was beautiful, and we appreciated little touches like seeing free pineapple passed out at the pool one day. The idea was nice, although the execution could have been better since the server was putting wet pineapple chunks directly into people's hands. We also wish the waterslides stayed open later, especially for families. Grand Wailea does offer free Nespresso coffee in the room, which is nice, but after seeing one too many social media videos about people misusing hotel coffee makers, I personally can't bring myself to use in-room hotel coffee machines anymore. One extra service I would gladly pay for is a paid hospitality suite or shower room option for guests with late flights. So many flights out of Hawaii leave late at night, and after checking out in the morning, it would be incredibly helpful to have a clean, comfortable place to shower and freshen up before heading to the airport. Overall, we loved Grand Wailea and would absolutely recommend it. The staff, room, beach, pools, and grounds were wonderful. I don't understand all the bad reviews because our experience was very positive. The resort is beautiful and memorable. My only real complaint is that the food, coffee, parking, and extras are priced so high that it pushes guests away from spending money on property. Full restaurants would be more profitable than beautiful restaurants sitting empty.

What a beautiful resort!! The entrance is mesmerizing with all the trees overlapping each other…read more Service is very kind and attentive. There's a pool for adults only (don't see that too often) very nice if you want laid back peace and quiet. They give massages out by the pool as well. They have the cutest little shopping area by the lobby that you've got to check out! Super fun for you shopping lovers. The rooms are spacious and the view is out of this world! This is a fun place to explore even if you aren't staying here! Come check it out!

Believe all the amazing reviews; you can't go wrong with Makena Weddings!…read more We had a pandemic-delayed wedding and had to postpone twice over a couple years. Makena Weddings made these postponements soooo easy for us, finding new dates, rescheduling all our vendors, and giving us nothing but support through the whole process! We worked primarily with Cindy, and the entire experience of planning our destination wedding at Olowalu Plantation House was a breeze! Wedding planning has a reputation of being super stressful, but honestly our experience could not be any different with the amazing support, guidance, and obviously logistics-handling that Cindy provided. Cindy brought our vision board to life with the perfect vendors for rentals, her recommendations were spot on, and moreover, she was so attentive to details. My husband and I consider ourselves very detail-oriented, and we were so happy that Cindy paid careful attention to every little thing, called out anything that might bother us so that we could consider readjusting, and took care of every situation without skipping a beat. The day of our wedding could not have gone smoother. Everything was perfect, we were so carefully attended to, and the evening went flawlessly without a single worry from us. If you want the beautiful wedding of your dreams, no stress or worries, and wonderfully caring and detail-focused people to work with, look no further than Makena Weddings!

We chose Makena Weddings for our small sunset beach ceremony, and they made everything effortless…read more Having attended a ceremony they coordinated ~10 years ago, we knew we were in good hands. Laurie and Cindy guided us through their beach package, adding a musician at our request (they booked Marvin Tevaga), recommending the perfect beach location, arranging Amber Quale Photography, and having co-founder Reverend Al Terry officiate. The bride shared a few bouquet ideas, and the result was stunning. We planned everything over email just a month in advance, and every vendor they recommended was outstanding. As Laurie predicted, we had the beach to ourselves. Mother Nature gave us a breathtaking sunset that Amber captured beautifully, Marvin's ukulele and voice added elegance and joy, and Al not only felt like family but was genuinely engaged--helping us focus on the meaning of the moment rather than just the logistics. If you want a stress-free, classy, and unforgettable beach wedding ceremony, Makena Weddings is the way to go.

My lady and I came here 25 years ago to celebrate our beginnings and returned to appreciate our quarter century with the 'Aloha Spirit'. In preparations for our festivities Sheree in Guest Services graciously cared for us - she is an extraordinary gift to visitors. Every moment on property continued the appreciation, Angel and Nilma's thoughtful care at the front desk, to the wait staff's attentiveness - Toby, Brant, Olivia, P.T.... at the Lehua Lounge and poolside and especially Braden at Morimoto. In addition to the magical ambience, you are treated like royalty. Complimentary snacks in the room are replenished daily, citrus infused water refills everywhere, Hawaii ice cream treats offered poolside, sunscreen dispensers at every pool. When you are looking for a chaise, they immediate put a chair cover on for you and bring multiple towels.... The culture of care (Hoʻokipa) begins with the Hawaiian culture and the exceptionally personable GM Richard Elliot along with Kodi a beverage manager with his "Andaz style" (personal service). Beautiful memories were created from dawn's light peeking into the grand Lawai'a Lounge to, chaises by the four descending pools, to complementary beach adventures - snorkeling, kayaking... to sunsets from our beloved poolside upper terrace table. Every dish was a delight, many 'the best we could remember'. Mahalo for creating a beautiful commemoration, may you ever feel the appreciation of your guests and colleagues.

Nice resort in Wailea. Everything was good, but nothing was wow…read more Rooms are on the small side. Low ceilings. Waterfall shower had good water pressure. Gym is good. Adequate ventilation and air conditioning, good assortment of cardio, weight machines, Smith machine, and free weights. Laundry room, including detergent and dryer sheets, are free to use. Three washers and three dryers available. There is a 1.5 mile ocean view path that connects the resorts, Shops at Wailea, and public beaches. Lots of people walking and running it. Lots of kids. There is an adults only pool in front of the spa, but it's not consistently heated and no ocean views. Free mineral sunblock at every towel station (SPF 30 and 50). We came after a big storm, and none of the water activities were available due to County brown water advisory. The rest of the resort fee activities were a nice add-on (e.g. smores at sunset, ukulele lessons, bingo, photography session). Cocktails were not great. Stick to the beer and wine. Breakfast buffet was good enough, but inconsistent and nothing exciting. Veggie fried rice was really good the first day, but lacked flavor the next day. Longans were a nice touch, but wasn't available every day (and no other specialty fruit replacement out of the ordinary selection). Ohana room (transition lounge) is available if you have a later flight and want to stay on property after checkout time of 11AM. Clean and has all the amenities needed to freshen up before a late flight. Includes a bathing suit spinner to dry it out for packing. All in all, they have everything you need for a Maui vacay.

Sea Maui - Memorable sunsets

Sea Maui

(1.1k reviews)

On our vacation to Maui last week, we took trips out to the sea with Sea Maui twice. Our first trip…read moreout was an adults-only family excursion while the kids hung out with their grandma and auntie. The catamaran was pretty sweet, with some really comfy bean bags overlooking the edge out to the ocean. While we did occasionally get splashed in this area, it was worth the unobstructed view of the sunset and the breeze in my hair. The crew was especially sweet and treated all of us like absolute royalty. A note to those who are prone to motion sickness: do not try to be brave and only wear sea bands thinking you'll be okay. Take your Dramamine an hour before you board the catamaran. While the first half of our dinner cruise was fine with my motion sickness, the second half of the trip left me feeling really queasy around dinner service time. This made me very sad. This was no fault of the crew, and 100% my fault for thinking I could tough it out. If you are ill-prepared, the crew has ginger ale, club soda and ginger chews to help. Speaking of dinner, the few bites I was able to eat on our first trip were fantastic: a full dinner buffet prepared by Cafe Jai. The salmon was perfectly tender, as was the short rib. The caesar salad was just the right amount of tangy (and the extra dressing was really great on the salmon as well.) I'm not sure what kind of sauce was on the crispy seasoned potatoes but they were absolutely delightful. And of course, the crown on top of a delicious meal was the mini brownie cup we were served for dessert before we wrapped up the trip. Our second trip (where I was prepared with some Dramamine) was a memorial for our grandparents, where we released their cremains at sea with eco-urns. I must say that the crew handled everything wonderfully. We had the full bar, another beautiful buffet spread including some delicious crispy chicken, a pesto pasta salad, pulled beef sliders, and rolls. After we said our emotional goodbyes, we were given rose petals to release into the ocean. We even received certificates after the trip that gave us the coordinates of where my grandparents cremains were released. I seriously cannot thank Sea Maui enough for giving my family a truly memorable experience on our trip to Maui. They made our trip so special. A million thanks for the kindness!

The Irish gentleman who pre-briefed us before leaving for the tour had a great sense of humor and set the tone for our excursion. Once aboard, the Captain and his crew were polite, cordial, fun loving and efficient. The food was great and the crew busied theirselves insuring everyone was comfortable, had drinks and the proper snorkeling gear. We saw many, many whales and at least 12 displays of whales big and small leaping out of the water. The hour long snorkeling provided the passengers with a myriad of tropical fish and sea turtles. We even had one try to climb the ladder into the boat. The fees for the excursion were fair and we definitely got our moneys worth for all we saw and participated in. I highly recommend The Sea Maui if you are looking for a great experience for you and your family or tour group.
