You drive through the winding hills of Millerton and just when you are a stones throw from the Connecticut border, you see a big red sign reading: TALLOW. Something about the building is familiar. An old McDonald's building, painted & reimagined. But the shape, the floors match the McDonald's from the memory of your youth. They've upgraded the vibe to be "upscale fast food", comfortable & chic booths, a beautiful fireplace I'd love to cozy up near in the winter, a stunning bathroom. The menu is calculated, purposeful: local ingredients from farms & local suppliers listed on a chalkboard, seasonal elements utilized to create fresh, mindful meals. There's a burger, a chicken sandwich, mushroom melt, steak, seasonal salads. Their burger is juicy, well-structured, perfectly seasoned. Their tallow fries are the perfect amount of crisp and fluffy interior, truly delicious--a hand cut fry that fast food could nevahhhh accomplish. We loved the grilled peach, heirloom tomato & burrata salad. It was fresh, drizzled with balsamic and oil, peppered with togarishi. There were three workers there: all of whom greeted us warmly, made us feel like family. You can watch the chef, Nate, whipping up your food right behind the counter, locked in and serious about providing you with a supreme experience. Austin, one of the owners, rolled out the dough used for the fresh buns. We witnessed the makings of our meal, every step, right in front of our eyes. My only complaint is I don't live in millerton, and I know I will crave this meal time and time again. I wish I could be right down the road, when a burger craving consumes me. But trust that I will be back to visit & to try their other seasonal options, as well as breakfast and dinner. Thank you team for a wonderful experience!

    Potato Lentil Soup

The woman who waited on us at the counter was not very friendly upon our arrival but she kinda warmed up as she served us. We ordered the 4 course prime rib dinner. We had Potato Lentil Soup which tasted good. The salad looked great but the flavors didn't mix well at all. Our prime ribs came barely warm (but delicious) and our baked potatoes were definitely reheated and came loaded with sour cream. I wish that was on the side so I didn't have to scrape it off. Dinner was topped off with a bread pudding with blueberries with a topping that didn't go with the dish. All in all the food was good, although I wish we were given options for things like dressing choice, how we wanted our meat and baked potatoes fixings. I was taken aback that we had to pay for our prime rib dinners at the counter upon ordering like we were at McDonald's. Definitely not worth the hour and a half drive or the nearly $100 price tag.

    The Melt sandwich, absolutely delicious!

What a delightful alternative to a fast food restaurant! Great service, nice ambiance, and very clean establishment. A nice selection of healthy foods and drinks. My Melt sandwich (white cheddar with slow-braised grass-fed short rib on toasted sourdough) with fries was absolutely delicious!

    Smashburger

This place was amazing. I am up in the Hudson Valley for vacation which is basically a coffee shop and food tour. This is a relatively new place but the reviews looked great and I am always looking for a good burger. Tallow did not disappoint. We started with the heirloom tomato and seared peach salad. It was fantastic. Then came the burger. This is one of the best smash burgers I have had. The bun is made in house and all the ingredients are locally sourced. Being housed in an old McDonald's building really adds to the feel of the place. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

We continued inside and found the bar area. We saw that there was a group at a table. So, we continued inside and sat down. The staff is very nice, but very slow. The menu is very interesting. We ordered the spicy sausage with fig appetizer (This was the star of the show! we got another order!) 2 orders of butternut squash soup and grilled octopus for apps to share. We also requested more bread and were served fresh baked rolls that were so good! We ordered the pistachio crusted pork chop and shrimp risotto for entrees. The 2 people that ordered butternut squash soup were a split decision on it. One loved it the other hated it. I tried it. I thought it tasted really good but i don't think i could eat a whole bowl of it. It was too sweet. The Octopus was excellent! The Spicy sausage with fig was amazing. This is a definite thing to order. The pistachio crusted pork chop was very good. I didn't love the risotto. If i'm ever in the area and have a lot of time to sit and eat, I would definitely come back.

I also had the best service. I live in San Francisco and needed to find a place to bake a birthday cake for my mother-in-law's 90th birthday party. 24 people were gathering at Interlaken Inn to celebrate. I reached out to about 3 places and Peg got back to me immediately--all via email. Through email I told her we wanted a chocolate cake with fresh fruit and whip cream in the middle. She said she needed to make two 9" rounds to feed the 24 of us. I picked up the cake on Saturday afternoon and asked for two sandwiches to go (turkey)) and they were both delicious, FYI! Saturday evening we celebrated at the Millerton Inn Restaurant. The kitchen put a candle on the cake (we had forgotten!) and after we sang Happy Birthday they cut the cakes and handed out the slices. There are NO WORDS to describe how much every single person in our group raved over this cake! It was super moist. The fresh fruit brought a lovely light acidity to the chocolate, and the whip cream was light and not too sweet. The cake wasn't too sweet either. My stepdaughter's husband actually never eats cake because he thinks it is too sweet and honestly, we couldn't stop him from seconds (and thirds) and each time he was in awe of how much he loved it! It was incredibly rewarding for me to see everyone so happy with the cake! Peg--THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! You're a baking genius. I'm only sad I can't get your cakes in San Francisco. And if any of this sounds like hyperbole, I assure you it is not. If anything, I haven't done a proper job describing the love your cake engendered.

Gracie's is an elevated diner experience...all the breakfast and brunch things you could want, but up a couple levels from a classic greasy spoon diner. Not dissing the greasy spoon diner experience...love that...but this is based in that historical experience, with an overall nicer experience in terms of food and atmosphere. Also, before we get into the specifics, here are 2 words which would bring me in from just about anywhere: Donut menu. Yes, they make their own donuts here, and that's enough reason to stop in, take out, or worship at the front door. We got our donuts to go after the meal...The coffee was GREAT. Too often, coffee, which should be the opening star of a diner experience, can be flavorless, browned water. Here it was good. Bold as I needed it to be, and the perfect foundation for the rest of the meal. My next go-to if they have it brunch experience is biscuits. They have them...you can get a biscuit on its own or, heck, go for a mini biscuit basket! I live for a biscuit-forward establishment. The Full Breakfast (submitting biscuit or potatoes for the meat) would have been my choice, but I decided to roll my own and ended up with a biscuit, fruit cup, and side of Hash Browns. The biscuit was good, large, and perfect with butter and honey. They make the hash browns to order - large hash brown patties - and with 2 different orders of them at the table, one was overcooked, too brown, and not impressive...but the other was perfect and delicious...bordering on potato pancake territory in presentation and flavor. Our server was fantastic...we had a large party encompassing 3 different tables in the middle of a Sunday morning (On Easter no less), which is, of course, the busiest time of the week. She was friendly, enthusiastic, and never made us feel rushed. If I found myself in the Hudson Valley again, Gracie's would be a definite destination for me.
