This campground has a good amount of amenities, it is very clean, the bathhouses are all very nice…read moreand clean as well. The campers and staff are usually all very friendly, and it is a warm and welcoming environment. The laundry room is spacious, and again CLEAN... that is a huge plus, everything is just so clean. There is playgrounds spread throughout the campground, which is really convenient. The only thing that would be better is if there was more shade in the pool area! The store is fully stocked with lots of options. There is lots to do for adults, and children. Every weekend there is so much going on! They even hold a church service on Sunday mornings!

I had a lot of questions when I made the reservation for Stoney Brook Cabin (the wheel chair…read moreaccessible one) but I pulled the trigger and I'm so glad we did. First I'll talk about the park itself then I'll talk about the cabin, because I figure some people probably have the same questions we did. This seems like an ideal place for spring or fall camping. Probably summer too but it didn't seem like there were any swimming options at the park. They had a ton of activity options for kids but we couldn't try any because it was thanksgiving and the staff was off. Still, it looks like a super fun place for kids. Like I said before, I had a lot of questions about the cabin. It mentions that it had a grill but said nothing about a fire circle. It does, indeed have a fire circle but this cabin (I suspect due to its ADA status) was EXTRA TALL. You really couldn't cook on it or even roast marshmallows easily. On the other hand it would be pretty great for families with small kids. While the ring still got hot your kid absolutely CANNOT fall into the fire. We were there when it was cold and the heaters worked a little TOO well. It didn't seem like there was a comfy medium. They were either on and you were roasting or off and you were freezing. Still, for a winter camp it was nice to have the option. The bathroom was extra big which was also quite nice. Remember to bring EVERYTHING, including hand soap and hand towels for the bathroom. Though it kind of feels like a hotel or Airbnb you will need all the essentials. While the website states that there is Wi-Fi and a tv for watching stuff, the Wi-Fi was not available while we were there. Also, the fold out couch was kind of falling apart. If you're going with kids they probably won't mind but if it's an all adult camp group the folks stuck on the fold out will likely not be thrilled.

Each trails are about a mile each and the shades provided by the dense woodlands makes it pleasant even in the Summer heat. I also really like this side of the Cabin John Regional Park because of ease of access from Tuckerman Lane. There's extra parking closer to Cabin John Shopping Center side as well and and another trail.

Each site is very well maintained with 2-3 large camping platforms, a fire ring, water spigot and picnic tables. There was pre-chopped firewood available in the sites, which is nice. Easy access to the trails and Cabin John Creek. It makes for a perfect quick get-away for people needing a recharge or couples with young children. We took our infant daughter and it was the perfect way to get her toes wet in the world of camping. I would stay away from sites 3 & 4, they sit closer to the highway and noise would be an issue in the morning. We stayed in site 2 and didn't have any issues with traffic noise. There are porta-potties and trash bins close by. There's a large pavilion at the top of the campground if you need a central meeting place for a larger group. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that it's a bit of a rigamarole to actually rent a site. You have to pick up and drop off a key for the front gate in Silver Spring, which isn't the most convenient. Additionally, although the fee to rent the site is reasonable ($25), there is a very large deposit charged for the rental as well ($200). This wasn't a deal breaker for us, but it may cause pause for some. Overall, a great experience, and I expect that we'll be back.

Fish and Wildlife Refuge [Laurel MD]…read more Unfortunately, because of the Federal Holiday (MLK) at the time of our visit the Visitor Center was closed but we briefly connected with nature and just explored a little bit of the area which offered 13,000 of wetlands, meadow, and forest. Visitor Center hours are from Wednesday through Saturday, 10:00a to 4:00p. The grounds are open sunrise to sunset except on Tuesdays (closes at 4:00p). We followed the hiking trail on the South Tract. We followed the trail... the lake on the right side. I was too scared to walk on the frozen lake but we saw a couple walking on it while taking selfie photos. The scenery is beautiful in winter time with the snow. We don't see snow like this in California. There were interpretive signs on the trails. During winter season we should see a wide variety of waterfowl; American Tree, Swamp, and Savannah Sparrows; and Rusty Blackbirds on the lake shores... we were on the lookout but I guess we weren't looking hard enough as we did not spot any. So what is this place? It's not a National Park but is one of the largest science and environmental education center in the Department of Interior created to conserve and protect wildlife and wildlands through research. It has informational exhibits that range from learning about different wildlife to man's relationship with nature. The trails themselves are really nice, and diverse. You'll have an opportunity to walk through the woods, the water, and open fields. They're well manicured and labeled, so there's no getting lost. You'll also have an opportunity to see some beautiful wildlife. There were lots of beautiful birds flying around, and if you look down, you're guaranteed to see some tiny frogs. There's probably more, but that's all we saw. I definitely think this park is worth checking out if you live in the area, or are visiting. It was a lovely afternoon.

There is a nice picnic area near the parking area with some grills and benches. The walk along the path is beautiful with nice views of the Potomac river. Walking up the path you can access the WSSC water plant. Beautiful place for a nice stroll or a bike ride on the C&O path - family fun guaranteed!

C & O Canal Tow Path nearby? It is right off the tow path. Plus parking is onsite. Minutes away from the city to feel like you're in a remote area of nature, but close enough if you need to get back to the city in 30 minutes. The original Swain Lock is onsite, but also is currently under construction surrounded by a chain-link fence. It might be a little tricky, but you could kayak from here too. I am not sure what the regulations are on it, but it didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to jump off from this site to get into the water.

Wanted to do something different for my husband's birthday celebration so I came up with a day of…read moreactivities and one of them included a helicopter ride. Booked Charm City Helicopters for a private 20 minute tour of Baltimore. Booking: The company is in transition to updating the booking system so I had a hard time booking initially via Google Ads but was able to book instantly when i went direct to the website. After I booked, I received a phone call confirming my booking where I talked to a lady and then also an automated text message and email. Pretty easy! Communication: They send automated text messages leading up to the Helicopter tour. Some of the messages are action items like entering your weight and reminders to sign waivers. One recommendation would be to include the waiver in the text message because it went to spam in my email so I couldn't find it and it held us up a bit when we were ready to fly. If a text message is sent about signing the waiver we should probably create a url for the waiver and add it to the text message. Also if you respond to the text message it doesn't go anywhere since it's not monitored and only for output. Arrival and Rules: Masks are still required for passengers which initially didn't seem awful but the pilot doesn't wear a mask and also the Helicopter was HOT and we were required to wear the mask the entire time. No air conditioning in the helicopter (@ least the one we were in that was black and tan didn't have any). The views were gorgeous but it made the ride uncomfortable on a day where it was 90 degrees. Ride: The pilot was great and delivered an entire history lesson during the flight. We are Baltimore natives but learned a few pieces of history while on tour. The ride was smooth and he let us know every time we could expect any extra vibration. This was a memorable experience. I would recommend for sure but caution if you choose to do it in summer with the current mask requirement. Wanted to do it for my birthday but it's in August so we will wait for sure. We will likely try the Baltimore Annapolis tour in Winter.
