Each site is very well maintained with 2-3 large camping platforms, a fire ring, water spigot and picnic tables. There was pre-chopped firewood available in the sites, which is nice. Easy access to the trails and Cabin John Creek. It makes for a perfect quick get-away for people needing a recharge or couples with young children. We took our infant daughter and it was the perfect way to get her toes wet in the world of camping. I would stay away from sites 3 & 4, they sit closer to the highway and noise would be an issue in the morning. We stayed in site 2 and didn't have any issues with traffic noise. There are porta-potties and trash bins close by. There's a large pavilion at the top of the campground if you need a central meeting place for a larger group. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is that it's a bit of a rigamarole to actually rent a site. You have to pick up and drop off a key for the front gate in Silver Spring, which isn't the most convenient. Additionally, although the fee to rent the site is reasonable ($25), there is a very large deposit charged for the rental as well ($200). This wasn't a deal breaker for us, but it may cause pause for some. Overall, a great experience, and I expect that we'll be back.

So if you stay here, you could have non-military friends and/or family visit you and even stay with you, without needing a visitor pass. This is a very small campground that is quite lovely. It seems popular with RV and camper folks, some of whom stay quite a while; interestingly, in the 3 nights/2 days we were there, 3 different sites were used for one night each. So it must be a good waypoint to and from other places. There was some serious confusion when we arrived, because when my SIL reserved a site online, he booked site #2. However, when he registered and picked up the packet of papers, it said site B. Then as we drove down the loop, we could see someone already in site #2....what? Back to the after hours reg desk in the community center, where he was told to just take whatever tent site was open! We ended up in a very large spot which contained two charcoal grills in the center, and six picnic tables; three were in the spot we chose, one in the middle, and one each at far sides of the clearing... it appeared this spot could potentially have been designed to be three sites. However, we were the only ones there on the Friday night of Memorial weekend, so we chose two level spots near the three tables to set up camp. Someone arrived on Saturday, and it turned out they were also supposed to have site B! So this is definitely a non-traditional system of assigning sites! Anyway. The good: spotless bathroom with a large shower, two stalls and two sinks (ladies' side). spacious sites, even for the RVs; walking distance to water's edge, where you could launch a small boat and/or fish; walking distance to the PX and Commissary; no need to go through a gate or have military ID to get in. Beautiful trees, and honeysuckle - love that scent! Great pricing, according to my SIL. The eh: muddy and slightly hilly for tent sites. When it poured Sunday night, the "driveway" into the site was a river of mud. Nothing for kids to do in the tiny campground itself. The UGH: mosquitoes!!! We practically drowned ourselves in spray, but all of us ended up with so many bites we looked like we had some mysterious disease that made welts over all exposed skin. Also, I get not having electricity at the tent sites, but it seems pretty basic to have a water spigot available. We had to fill pots (for washing dishes) in the bathroom! Since this is easy driving distance from home (around 45 minutes on Friday afternoon on a holiday weekend), we said, "If it sucks, we'll just come home!" It didn't suck at all (other than mosquito bites). It was a lovely place on Saturday afternoon, just the right amount of sun/shade, with a light breeze. And the others had a blast in the boat rented by my SIL at the nearby marina (which IS inside the gate so I couldn't drive in alone).

First I'll talk about the park itself then I'll talk about the cabin, because I figure some people probably have the same questions we did. This seems like an ideal place for spring or fall camping. Probably summer too but it didn't seem like there were any swimming options at the park. They had a ton of activity options for kids but we couldn't try any because it was thanksgiving and the staff was off. Still, it looks like a super fun place for kids. Like I said before, I had a lot of questions about the cabin. It mentions that it had a grill but said nothing about a fire circle. It does, indeed have a fire circle but this cabin (I suspect due to its ADA status) was EXTRA TALL. You really couldn't cook on it or even roast marshmallows easily. On the other hand it would be pretty great for families with small kids. While the ring still got hot your kid absolutely CANNOT fall into the fire. We were there when it was cold and the heaters worked a little TOO well. It didn't seem like there was a comfy medium. They were either on and you were roasting or off and you were freezing. Still, for a winter camp it was nice to have the option. The bathroom was extra big which was also quite nice. Remember to bring EVERYTHING, including hand soap and hand towels for the bathroom. Though it kind of feels like a hotel or Airbnb you will need all the essentials. While the website states that there is Wi-Fi and a tv for watching stuff, the Wi-Fi was not available while we were there. Also, the fold out couch was kind of falling apart. If you're going with kids they probably won't mind but if it's an all adult camp group the folks stuck on the fold out will likely not be thrilled.

There is a nice picnic area near the parking area with some grills and benches. The walk along the path is beautiful with nice views of the Potomac river. The original Swain Lock is onsite, but also is currently under construction surrounded by a chain-link fence. It might be a little tricky, but you could kayak from here too. I am not sure what the regulations are on it, but it didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to jump off from this site to get into the water.

Everyone is INCREDIBLY friendly and accomodating! - The food: it's good, and plentiful...I might even say *too* plentiful - The rooms: they used to be itty-bitty and cramped (and many still are) but they have done a ton of renovations to make things better - Fun theme nights: Wednesday is crab-leg night, Wednesday is also karaoke night at the Pony Express (the bar), Tuesday at the Pony is trivia night, etc. - The costs are very reasonable and competitive Some things that annoy me: - You can't get your own food at the buffet anymore. And sometimes the staff don't have the best English. Usually this is something I do not care about at all, but sometimes there is a language barrier when you're trying to communicate what you want on your salad. - If you are renting this facility to give a training...BEWARE: you will be aggressively nickel-and-dimed if you require any additional help/supplies that are not explicitly in your contract! What I really don't like: - You feel stuck here. Downtown DC is a long ways away and expensive to get here, so you start to feel trapped the more you come here. Us and the Nigerians probably invented shade centuries ago. That being said, I know this place is incredible because my parents raved about it!!!! They loved it! They called me immediately after they return home from their weekend trip, and had nothing but wonderful things to say about their stay. They said the location is beautiful and not very far from where they live in Howard County so they felt well rested when they returned home. They loved their room and were huge fans of the art gallery in the common area. Talking to the gallery curator might've been my mom's favorite part of their stay. She kept talking about how beautiful the art was and how she enjoyed talking to the curator, and my mom is not even a big art person so I was surprised to hear this. My dad who loves to eat, said the breakfast was fantastic and enjoyed the multiple courses. They also enjoyed that they had the opportunity to introduce themselves and meet the other guests during breakfast, their favorite guest was a woman named Ms. Gwen who was celebrating her 86th birthday. Apparently, she was the life of the party! They also enjoyed walking around the property and the neighborhood. They didn't go to the spa (because my brothers and I didn't pay for that part). However, they said they want to go for another weekend visit next year and they'll consider checking out the spa. They also said that Ms. Sheila was wonderful and they had a fantastic time and they're looking forward to going back next year. Went camping on just one overnight in October. It was a pretty setting for being so close to…read morehouses and businesses. There were multiple loops of camp sites and I felt they were a bit close. You could hear conversations of most the close by campers. There was lots of partying going on and multiple families. The hosts were very courteous and made rounds and talked to campers. I feel like by midnight It was finally quiet. The facilities were clean and there were showers. There was firewood for purchase at the hosts campsite too. It was a cute location. Just may not come back mostly because of how noisey It was. And how people played their music very loud.
