Does not respond to phone calls and text messages to fix a problem. He installed air conditioning in the summer of 2022 , by spring of 2023 air conditioning unit had a problem. When he finally answered a text and/or phone call, and there were many before he responded, he would promise to come out and not show up. When he did show up, (12 days after first call) he said he fixed the unit but it immediately malfunctioned and he was called again, 10 days later I'm still waiting for the unit to be fixed. read more

This is a most tardy review...apologies one company. About three or four years ago, I met John Paterno while he was responding a new owner home (condo) inspection repair need. Asked him if he could check my A/C unit when finished. It was an older unit and needed "Freon" (R-22) which has been become obsolete and pricey too. He said if it didn't resolve my problem he'd give us a credit when replacing the compressor unit. Sure enough, it went out, he kept his word, giving the full reimbursement discount. I recommended him to three neighbors for three A/C units--each were very satisfied with his price, timeliness and workmanship. John Paterno and his team were recommended to me and my mom by a family friend, and I've got to say I'm very thankful for that recommendation. Our house was undergoing a remodel, and the central heating needed to be changed because it was just too old to keep being used. John came in and explained how everything was going to work: he explained his process, explained why he trusted some brands of air conditioners and heaters over others, and explained some of the regulations that influenced his decision making. He explained some of the mechanics of how a thermostat is influenced and made sure we understood why the thermostat had to go in a certain place, etc. His team took out all of our old heating system and disposed of those on their own in a timely fashion. The new system looks great, and bought us a Google Nest Thermostat to use with it which works wonderfully. I believe most of the delays we experienced with him were due to Covid and he did his best to communicate that so we had accurate time estimates. He always work a mask, as did his crew. They were very nice and made sure any complaints or concerns we had were addressed. My only minor complaint is that there were a couple of times when they did not appear to approach our desired end date with as much urgency as we had wanted, but I believe that is a common complaint for any type of contracting work. Besides that, I have no other major complaints and would recommend him to anyone looking to completely replace their AC/heating, or even if they just needed smaller modifications. Would give 4.5 stars if Yelp allowed halves. read more

Paterno has installed 5 full home air conditioners for us over the years at different properties, 3 months ago he installed a new Samsung system in our home. It is still not working and the effort by Paterno's to fix the problem in my opinion has not been adequate. We're very disappointed with Paterno and Samsung also seems to be unresponsive and uncaring about customer service. I wish we could undo this situation, but definitely stay away from anything Samsung. read more

We live in Lakewood, and the crew just did a full "cut-in" at our home (a full cut-in means they had to install a furnace in the attic, do all the vent & duct work, and install the condenser in the backyard. Just had Paterno Heating and A/C install a brand new central air system for our home in Long Beach. We have a flat roof so were considering ductless mini split systems as well as potentially building soffits inside, but those options were very expensive. John was very upfront and knowledgeable, as well as competitive on price. His experience with our roof type, and being a local Long Beach resident was very attractive. He also strongly recommended us to obtain permits for HERS and city inspections, where other vendors steered away from that. A few weeks ago we started to notice that our heater was blowing cold air, sometimes for over 30 minutes after our heat got to the set temp. All that cold air caused our heater to kick back in...our fan was constantly running! We tried troubleshooting, replaced filter & thermostat (fan on auto) with no luck. I put out an APB on YELP for help and John was one of the first to respond. He was able to squeeze us in his schedule on 12/30. After running a complete diagnostic he discovered we needed a circuit board. Instead of leaving us shivering through the New Years holiday he made a few calls and was able to pick up the part and install it the next morning - New Years Eve!!! He was extremely knowledgeable about our heater and all things HVAC, including new state laws, etc. that he shared with us. Professional, personable, and honest. They were recommended to me by a trusted friend, and I am glad I took the advice; Leonard & John are extremely efficient, knowledgeable, and professional. John texted me back after I left a message and we set an appointment that was convenient for both of us. John let me know he was stuck waiting for an inspector so his brother Leonard came out for the service call. He asked what the problems I was experiencing and then we looked at the condenser unit. He said turn it on and we'll know one of two things. Sure enough I had a blown capacitor. He took his time to show me how to access the capacitor, and explained everything in plain English so I'd understand if I ever had a similar problem with the other unit.
