I came to this location to vote during election time. They were gracious and the premises were always clean. Since I moved from the vicinity I heard of some disturbing incidents. That was a couple years ago. I'm not concerned because even prestigious academy's have had incidents not far from here. PS 169 tightened control and security since then. Just remember that trouble can show up anywhere! Unless someone tells me different, I'm giving PS 169 Four Stars. It's going to be forever in a corner of my heart.

The boredom had turned into detachment and hatred of school in general. When we switched her to Speyer, the sparkle came back. Speyer is able to meet her on her level - and give her the confidence to try things she didn't think she was capable of. The peer group is also just wonderful. While the kids are all bright, there is no atmosphere of competition. The kids all cheer one another in a genuine way. It's a really special place.

Greetings Fellow Yelpers!…read more Since my last review of The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA), I have been personally visited by faculty members of the school on more than one occasion and although I do not appreciate how I was spoken to, I no longer hold so much anger for the events I experienced. Surely things have improved, so it's time for a friendly update! (If my visitors are reading this, no...you didn't scare or intimidate me... I'm just not angry anymore.) My own experience at TMLA was negative and humiliating. But I cannot imagine that the issues that were present years ago could continue to slip by unnoticed. Although my time at The Academy did not benefit me, there are many others who did find it helpful. Eventful and informative open houses are held at least once a year and visiting parents and students have a chance to speak with EVERYONE. Their theatre programming in middle/high school is college/graduate school level. My daughter went to this school after many other more "prestigious" independent schools in the city let us down-Dwight was superior! Why? Because Dwight is completely devoted to seeing the "spark" and potential of every student. She is now a straight A student at an Ivy-I only mention this for the status obsessed parents perhaps reading this review-and about to deride the school. Also, she was incredibly well-prepared to succeed in college due to the IB curriculum. The faculty at the school are devoted and brilliant and really care about the students. My son is now enrolled-what is extraordinary about Dwight is the school also acknowledges and has a program devoted to helping different learners-both my kids are dyslexic. Most other private schools have "a learning specialist" often well-intentioned, but not properly trained and most importantly without proper resources from the administration to actually help students. Dwight knows that many learning disabled students are very smart, but need some extra support. Many other private schools prefer to "counsel these kids out" or say the students aren't academically strong enough to handle the curriculum.
