I took classes with different vibes, and all the instructors, those leading the classes and others I met in the studio, were grounded and led from a place of calm and centeredness that's maybe awkward to articulate but you know it when you feel it.

It is a welcoming and serene environment. The heated room will wring you out and leave you feeling ultra relaxed at the end of class. Just up the road from Ashlawn Farms Coffee in a most picturesque section of Old Lyme, stone walls and multigenerational farms lead you to a farm with a small demure sign. "Yoga" it simply says. Driving slowly onto the property as requested on the website (animals live on the farm and slow driving is requested to protect them) down a long winding driveway through the farm towards, yes, a Big Red Barn rimmed in white holiday lights and surrounded by more old stone walls. The building itself, though looking like an old barn is new (or perhaps just gutted and rebuilt?) so new that one smells fresh unfinished wood inside. The interior is gorgeous with unfinished wide board wood walls, wood flooring, vintage style lighting with old style bulbs for warm glow, and huge picture windows. The crowd as well as the instructor was warm and welcoming. I was so nervous that I would be judged in this very wealthy area for not having the new style brand name yoga pants, or for being a curly headed slightly ethnic looking gal in the land of the whites, or for having a rusty dented up 20 year old honda. Nothing could be further from what I experienced. Diverse body types, friendly mellow people, normal workout clothes, and a very communal type class. Joan engaged us in introductions and had a light and fun attitude throughout the class. To me, it was exactly the right amount of meditative vibe, prompts to release stress, etc, that one expects with yoga without being too spirit chakra pseudo science. Most interesting was a series of balance poses in which we all gathered in a circle, and linked arms. That was different and really lovely to create a sense of community, and to make me feel even more welcome. The class itself was challenging (for me, having not done yoga in years) and yet I felt like I could keep up, slow down if I needed, and follow along. One of the corrections made on my pose was pretty amazing, ad helped my body click. Can't wait to try a daytime class to see the views out those big windows.

Carol is a wonderful instructor, a wealth of good information on a multiple of health related topics. She goes out of her way to create a community in each class. I have taken a number of Cheryl's classes too. She has a dynamite style, always encouraging. Helen teaches Yoga Tune Up. If you have not taken this type of class before it is a must. Those little tune up balls get into every nook and cranny helping to work out oohs and ahhs you didn't even know you had. And Helen is fab, positive, encouraging, eager to laugh. The studio is warm and inviting. Prices are competitive.

High Street Yoga is the best (HOT) yoga studio in the Westerly area…read more What sets HSY apart from other studios in the area is definitely their flexible schedule, awesome instructors, reasonable pricing & showers! I'm partial to their 6am hour of power class during the week. I actually wish Deb taught at 6am every morning but I'm being greedy. They have classes most mornings & noon then again around dinner time. Definitely check their website for a complete list but it's easy to find a class to fit into your schedule. Not all instructors here are the same but they're all great. Every one brings their own personality to class & some can be more challenging than others. So you think $140 a month isn't cheap for yoga? Well yoga is expensive but HSY is definitely most competitive when it comes to price options. A "drop in" for most studios is at least $15 & some don't let you purchase packages. HSY does offer a trial membership so you know what you're getting into before plunking down too much cash. Yoga is an investment & if you're serious you'll definitely get your money's worth. And not every studio I've practiced at has offered locker rooms and/or showers. It's great to take a shower & change into clean clothes after 90 minutes of breathing & stretching.
