I built an insulated patio cover from Patio Kits Direct. The customer service was excellent, and the patio came out beautiful. It's a substantial improvement upon the prior wooden trellis cover. It did take some work to install. I had to hire some help. There is though some room for improvement: 1. The build directions are a bit messy and need to be rethought and be much clearer. 2. It would be much easier to build if they had done clear careful YouTube videos explaining how to build the patio. 3. While all pieces arrived correctly, they are not labeled, and don't perfectly fit the description in the list they provide. This needs to be improved. Especially the piece labeling. 4. You are given only five days to report any missing or damaged pieces upon delivery. Given the mild complexity of the construction, this is too restrictive. read more

PKD start to finish had overall good experience. The 3D design was a nice touch and sold me when I was browsing to buy a large aluminum patio cover since my last wood patio cover was decimated with termites. The sales was as expected and got me a really good price over Columbus Day sale. The delivery was on time and in my backyard which was nice. All the parts I verified were delivered. The customer service help when I was building it was really good. Always there when I called and never in a hurry. The actual kit I got was insulated patio cover( 14' x 36' ) which was about a 1/3 more than the non- insulated but you get what you pay for. Especially when able to walk on the roof and nicer finish. The only gripe I have is with the directions for install are very plain and basic and not always apply to the insulated cover, the company should have done a better job with that and If I had no prior mechanical and tool experience it would have set me back big time. They should have made a video on how to install it would have saved me time and mistakes I made along the way. Terrible customer service. Received my order and we're missing multiple items (They only give you 5 days to inventory all the items sent). I told them what I was missing and then made me take photos of every piece of material. They then sent part the items then told me the other part was backordered and don't know when it would arrive. This has been one of the worst purchasing experiences I've ever had. From the start, the delivery was delayed, and we were only notified about the delay 30 minutes to an hour before the original delivery time. When the delivery was rescheduled, they arrived two hours late, forcing us to stay home both days just to sign for it. We never received proper instructions, and the instructions we eventually found were horrible--unclear, incomplete, and nothing like the "moderate build" the seller promised. My husband is very handy and could not figure out how to assemble it, so we had to spend thousands of dollars hiring a professional who specializes in patio kits. None of the parts were labeled, none of them had measurements, and everything looked identical, so we had to measure each piece ourselves just to figure out what was what. You only have five days to report missing or incorrect parts, which is completely unrealistic considering the parts aren't labeled. When the professional builder came to start the job, he immediately noticed they had sent us the wrong pieces and even mixed up components from different sets. Because we were in the middle of a backyard renovation and didn't discover the issue within their five-day window, we were denied any refund or exchange--even though the mistake was theirs. Now we have to spend even more money to get the correct piece. Overall, this company has a terrible system, terrible communication, and a product that is extremely difficult to put together. I bought a patio cover in May while I was painting my house. It was delivered By the end of the month. I still had to finish painting and prepare the area for the awning. This took me about two months because I am disabled and can work like I used to. I finally got to install the awning in August. It's the 9th today and I get to installing the front gutter and it is 12" too short. I know I had to report any issues within 3 days but I didn't catch the gutter being short because I it was bundled with the other long parts. I called Shawn as soon as I found out. He is going to get me an answer as to if they will make it right or not. I will update this when I get an answer. Hopefully spending 5 grand will get you good customer service. read more

I just installed an 18' X 11' non-insulated solid top. White pans and Spanish Brown posts/wrap/beams/plates. It is attached to my house on 2 sides (L-shaped). It looks fantastic and like the house and cover were made for each other. I will share some tips, advice, comments here: * Don't be afraid to reach out to your sales/design rep as often as you want/need in the process of questions, designing, and ordering your kit. This is a serious capital improvement to your house. That's what they are there for and what they get paid for. They were very helpful. I had some missing pieces and wrong pieces and we were able to get that straightened out in about a week. I was persistent in my calls/contacts as I had an install/erection date with a crew and needed everything on site at that time. * If you are going to be installing it yourself, do yourself a big favor. Don't try to do it all in one day. Even with a big crew, there are a lot of things that need to get done all at the same time. Rushing will only produce mistakes and you will not be happy with the result. In my case, I spent a week pre-cutting and drilling holes in all of the parts and laying them out in stages in my back yard. This made everything go up fast and smooth. I did all my electric work at the house and installing my LED lights in the pans with the wring and boxes. All I had to do was connect the wires together on the top. * Measure 6 times and cut only once. You don't have any extra parts or pieces. If you cut too short, you are at a standstill till you get a replacement. That could take 1-2 weeks. Lay pieces out and up against the house to get a true visualization, especially regarding orientation (front/back, left/right, up/down). Make sure all your seams are pointed in the right direction before cutting or drilling holes (learned the hard way on that matter...) * The instruction manual has every possible way that you might be doing your install. Print it out in color and get rid of any page that does not pertain to your build. This will simplify everything. If you are installing LED lights, make sure you buy a 4" hole saw. Don't try cutting it by hand with snips. You will jack up your pan. I used rubber grommets in the hole of the pan cap to keep from cutting up the wire. Check that the pan/bay of lights work before moving on to your next pan during the install. For my cover, i put in 6 LED lights. Each light is 600 lumens, for a total of 3600 lumens. It is the right amount of light for that area. I installed a dimmer switch to the control on the inside of the house. These were dimmable LED's. Also, with regard to planning your lights layout, go to this page to get help with layout design and measurements: https://blog.recessedlighting.com/recessed-lighting-calculator/ * Physically look at every piece and get a hard count and compare it to your instructions, the parts list that you were sent on the front end, and your delivery parts checkoff sheet. Don't wait till install day to find out you are missing something. * The kit is adequate, but I wanted excellence. So I bought an additional package of 100 1/2" sheet metal screws. I also beefed up my post bases. I added an additional redhead concrete anchor in the center of each base. I also added some additional aluminum to the front and back of the T so that I could bet a beefier connection. I used 1 1/2" "L" aluminum on the inside of the base. just tape it together to hold it in place. Use the 1 1/2 TEK screws to screw the post to the base. * I bought 2 additional tubes of white caulking and a coupe tubes of colored caulking. Any screw exposed to the elements (with exception of colored screw on the bottom connecting pan to hanger channel) got a nice blob of caulk. I also caulked the back/top/bottom of the hanger channel. I came back and painted the line against the house where the caulk meets the stucco. * I added a 3" strip of heavy duty flashing tape where the flashing lip meets the stucco and a generous amount of caulk underneath the flashing where it meets the hanger channel. It has a nice clean look and will not leak. * The 5/8" colored hole plugs are not a tight fit and can come out. Just take a screw driver and bend out the plastic tabs and it will hold. * You need a good 7 1/2" aluminum cutting blade for your circular saw and a 4" aluminum cutting blade for your grinder in order to make all your different cuts. Make sure your metal is secure before you start cutting. if it moves, you will have a bad cut. Saw horses are a must. Wipe off the shards of metal carefully after your cuts. It will scratch your paint. * There are tons of videos on installing all brands of aluminum and Alumawood patio covers. Watch them all several times before you start this project. I might just post my own on YouTube. I plan to replace an existing gazebo next summer with a stand alone patio cover that matches the one I just installed. read more

I ordered my Alumawood Patio cover from PKD and I'm happy I did. Given Covid 19, everyone was working from home, yet their customer service was excellent and their rep returned a quote with in a day. The only reason I didn't give PKD 5 stars is their lack of directions for the 1/2 Newport (solid) and 1/2 lattice cover. If you're considering a solid cover or a lattice cover PKD directions are good plus you good YouTube Alumawood videos, but I couldn't locate any for solid/lattice except a couple provided by PKD. These are helpful, but my stupid brain had trouble with the critical first steps. I live close to PKD so Bill was kind enough to stop by my house and laid out my cover on the grass, it now made sense to me and I completed the cover on my own. The toughest part of my build was our Corona Wind that would kick my butt by 2:00 pm everyday. FYI- buy a good quality circular saw blade for metal, my Sawzall did not provide a clean cut. Bill recommends a 72 teeth, I found a 60 teeth and it worked fine. Also recommend picking up a magnet nut-setter set at Harbor Frt and magnet extension. Now complete, I love my patio cover and the wind doesn't move it an inch, very solid. Thank you PKD, I am a fan. read more

Horrible company. I ordered a patio cover from them and almost the entire order came damaged. Deep scratches down to the metal, and dents. Their response? Just use some touch-up paint. Why would I spend $4K for a kit that is supposed to be factory painted and maintenance free just to apply touch-up paint because they cant deliver a quality product. After hours of taking pictures and sending emails I finally got them to replace the entire kit. Great! Not! The replacement pieces were also damaged and they are refusing to replace them. Their response? Just use touch-up paint. Save yourself some time and go with another company who is competent. read more

It's now been nearly 11 months since I first encountered Patio Kits Direct. The first thing that drew me to the company is that their website not only allowed me to enter the dimensions of my proposed replacement but also let me envision what it would look like, including selecting colors, and, most importantly, provided the actual PRICE-- right there in front of me without me having to actually talk to a human being! Once I had selected Patio Kits Direct I contacted the company and spoke with Katie. She was extremely helpful and patient as she answered the endless questions I had-- including whether or not I was insane to consider doing the work myself. So, if you've read this far you it's time for me to tell you why I am even bothering to write this review and, unfortunately it's not because they paid me to do so! I needed to replace my old wooden patio cover because it had significant termite damage and there were no signs the critters planned to take a break from their chomping in the near future. Though I'm an old retired fella and more of a nerd than a burly construction dude I decided I would install the patio cover myself. For your sake I will now condense what took the vast majority of the time from concept to completion of the project. I needed to get a permit from my city-- in my case Imperial Beach, CA. That entailed me filling out lots of paperwork, drawing up plans, revising those plans, revising those plans and, finally, revising those plans. This process took me from February to May of 2022 but finally I had the permit. It was only then that I actually purchased the patio kit-- all during this time Katie and crew had been waiting patiently along with providing what help they could in me obtaining the permit-- including sending me Engineering information required for the permit. To backtrack a bit originally I'd planned to install the new patio cover in May but since the permit took so long and I had a vacation already planned I chose not to have the cover delivered until August. I finally began the install at the very end of August-- and that's when I discovered a real problem. Two of the beams for the patio were three feet short! I can't say I was delighted about this... so I contacted my new rep Rosa at PKD figuring my patio cover would be delayed another two weeks or so. To my utter amazement two new correct beams were delivered just TWO days later! Lesson learned-- with a big project like this there WILL be issues. BUT, Patio Kits Direct will accept responsibility for errors on their part and solve them quickly. You really can't ask for any more than that. As far as the build itself was concerned though it didn't take too much time I am glad I was able to do the work over many days. This enabled me to think through specific issues with my site and make absolutely sure I understood the build instructions. One absolutely GREAT thing that PKD offers is the ability to speak to an EXPERT who knows everything about how to build these kits. The expert I spoke to is named Shawn and he couldn't have been more helpful. We discussed points that weren't absolutely clear to me in the build instructions along with tools and techniques. He is even available on Saturdays! (Full disclosure, this means he could not be reached on Monday). By the way, the build instructions are VERY good. But with a project of this size you have to expect some challenges. If you are able to do so I recommend taking time to puzzle through things as you go rather than trying to knock things out in a single weekend. I'm sure that can be done but I was happy to be able to ponder things over the course of about a week and a half. So, for example, I spent one day installing the brackets that hold up the posts-- one hour to measure and mark, another hour or so to decide if they were just where they belonged and, after a two-hour break, an hour to hammer drill the holes and actually attach the brackets. One other thing worth mentioning is that I built the entire patio cover myself-- except for one period of 1/2 hour when I asked a friend to come by and support the longest beams and 1/2 hour when my wife helped keep the posts straight while I attached them to the ground brackets. Nothing else really required more than one person. So, the thing is, now we have a really good-looking patio cover which is strong, looks great and will undoubtedly last the rest of our lifetime and probably longer still. You should buy from PKD because 1) they sell really good products at very good prices, 2) building the patio kit yourself saves you about 50%, 3) you can know the price and configure the kit online without even talking to a salesperson, 4) Katie, Rosa and Shawn provide EXCELLENT support and 5) they will help you through the issues you will undoubtedly encounter. Buyer beware. These guys give great customer service while in the process of buying your patio kit. They boost build support help available 8 hours a day and 4 hours on Saturday. Well after i made the purchase, the first problem was the incomplete delivery, the most important part of my kit ( the steel posts) were not sent...how in the world can that happen and yes I could not get anyone in customer service to help me that day so I had to send my contractor home, after that little problem these clowns forgot to send the brackets that hold my rafters in place, I tried numerous times to get ahold of build support via text and calls. No response until the next day..really I already sent my contractor home, again. I finally felt I could not risk doing business with these guys and got the missing items from their competitors. I cannot recommend purchasing here. I had a fairly simple project - just a simple 9x7 cover over some french doors. I opted for the insulated panels which they seem to be less familiar with. The provided installation instructions were incomplete, and often times flat out wrong. There is no high level view for how things fit together so that tolerances and specs can be followed. Pictures in the instructions often show the same thing but done differently. Sometimes incorrect hardware is specified. It should not be assumed that a DIY kit should REQUIRE multiple phone consults to supplement such basic things as part orientation. In addition, I find it very odd that some pieces need to be cut by customer and match exactly with pieces cut at the factory. Either cut them all or dont bother cutting... at the very least, specify when things need to match and line up. All of this on top of shipping me incorrect parts (that they then replaced to their credit). Overall, I would have preferred to just buy raw materials or a kit from manufacturer and leave patiokits out of it. read more

I googled DIY patio covers and found Patio Kits Direct in Wildomar. we previously lived in Murrieta so I was familiar with the area. We went to Patio Kits Direct showroom and Bill welcomed us. Within minutes we had a design and Katlyn had priced the job out. We even discussed installation, and Bill was able to recommend an installer. No high-pressure to sell me. Patio cover. I recently finished my PDK Alumawood Laguna lattice 24 x 15 patio cover. First, if you are not handy or have done little building and/or do not have cut off saw don't even think about this as a DYI. This is not a leggo set it is a complicated build and you need to be spot on with measurements and angles. That being said if you are handy and have a good relationship with a good handyman you can save a ton of money doing the install yourself. First, the design was easy to complete using their on-line virtual build tool. Once I got that completed I called and discussed the details of what I was looking to do along with providing some pictures of where I'd be doing the install. This was easy and they were very professional in their advice. 5 stars. Second, once I decided to order I was informed that manufacturing would be between 12 to 14 weeks. They were pretty close to that, however due to damage in delivery to their facility, which they found on inspection, put back the delivery date two more weeks. That being said all the materials arrived and were placed in my backyard by the delivery driver. They set expectations and they met those. 4 stars. Third, I had read all the materials and made sure I had all the correct tools needed for the install including an 80 tooth 10 inch metal cutting blade for my cutoff saw, a fresh set of magnetic nut drivers, a fresh set of hole drills, and a step drill (more on this later). I found the instructions overall somewhat confusing, and I was not alone, I had hired a handyman to help me and he too found the instructions not well laid out. 3.5 star Fourth, once we got started with the build we did some improvising and got on a roll. The materials are of excellent quality and for the most part all the screws (the instructions call for a 4 inch lag bolt however they had shipped 3 inch lag bolts so I had to go the hardware store to get the right size). I'm sure that had I called they would have shipped them to me but I did not want to hold up the build. That being said all the brackets were included and accounted for. 4.5 star Fifth, as part of my install I wanted to add 6 lights. To be fair I was advised that they did not have instructions for installing lights in a Laguna lattice patio cover and that I needed to consult local electrical codes to insure compliance. My handyman was very knowledgeable in this area and we both came to the same design conclusion as to how to install the lights. This is where the step drill came to use we also used rubber bushings on each hole that wire passed through. They did however provide all the pieces necessary to install the lights we just needed to do a bit of customization. The lights are a great addition 4 star. Bottom line would I recommend them, yes however ask yourself do I have the skills necessary to complete this type of project. I saved over $5,000 and paid the handyman about $1,200 to assist me. Hard to follow, spelling mistakes, repeating pages...someone really needs to review their work and ensure it makes sense 2. Kit quality isn't the best. Lag screws that are meant to mount hanger into stucco not strong, break frequently. Purchase some from Home Depot of better quality Hanger doesn't need to come with predrilled holes. It doesn't align specially with every homes studs...so the installer just has to drill through metal hanger anyways In my particular install, the beam is the worst part. The C shaped 16ga steel beam that is inserted inside the alumawood was not the best. 1. It didn't fit snug inside, about .25" gap all around and 2. Once the weight of the ceiling panels was on, it started flexing the back of the steel beam. Between both of these, it has caused the top of the aluminum beam to lean toward the house, causing a gap when the side plates are mounted on posts. The steel beam insert should have been larger to meet the inside dimensions of the aluminum beam (or vice versa) and it should be a tube not C (for more strength and rigidity). You can kinda see in the photos the gap. Looking at the beam, you can definitely see the top leaning. I'm still trying to figure out how to correct this read more

Ordered March 31st and was told 4-6 weeks, we are at 10 weeks. Rosa couldn't (or wouldn't ) produce any information-just the I'll update when I get information. Right after purchasing she had said she'd reach out in 3 weeks for any updates- so I was expecting to hear something much sooner. I reached out at only 4 weeks and of course just get told they'll update when they have information ( super helpful, right?). I called Amerimax Alumwood directly around 7 weeks out of frustration ( which isn't for customers to call, I get that ) and right after -at the 8 week mark- Rosa called and said that it was produced. And that it's awaiting being shipped from Southern California to Sacramento. Okay, cool. 2 weeks more and nothing- they will update me when it's there because Amerimax doesn't provide any further details. It wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't even made and I was just told that so I'd stop asking or trying to find out information. It crossed my mind that maybe the chosen color was backordered or something and if that were the case I'd want to know ect. I have no idea on the quality ( can only imagine the hassle it will be if anything is missing, wrong, or broken !) but the customer service I have gotten is not my cup of tea. Don't say 4-6 weeks if it's not. I get Covid can be blamed for slowing everything down - but I mean if that's the case shouldn't they adjust the lead time and not say 4-6 weeks to begin with. read more

Very disappointed by the experience and can't recommend. I ordered a kit late last year and it arrived via the Sacramento factory. in fact more than double the amount of product showed up in my driveway as I received parts from other jobs. I had to sort through piece by piece to figure out what was mine and what wasn't. Then I was missing pieces as well. some of the pieces took several attempts by the factory to resolve. Some of the pieces were wrong but were told they were a "new style". I questioned them over and over and was told they were right. it wasn't until I said "fine, furnish me the new instructions" that their tune changed. Then they were the wrong pieces and the correct ones had to come from that horrible factory. On top of that the instructions are "directionally correct". meaning that you can get the general idea but they are not detailed enough or even correct in other spots. luckily the tech support guy was great that helped me work through this mess. it's finally done but not really DIY. I have some good skills but felt like I had to do most of the figuring out how to make this work. in the end a decent product but such a horrible experience. i had hoped to buy a second one but there is just no way.
