I have been having bad luck with movie theaters lately. Okay, this place is small, which I thought would be actually quite nice. Instead, the theater's are dirty, littered with popcorn all over the floors of both the theaters and hallways, the chairs do not recline whatsoever (more like average movie type chairs), and when I came in the entire credit card system was entirely down and they spilled someone's popcorn all over the counter. Honestly, the experience in the movie theater was fine (good quality, good sound); however the service was just so slow and horrible. Cleanliness was horrible and the entire visit just wasn't positive. It also didn't help that it took nearly 20 minutes to find a close parking space (they should have a parking garage here!). Management seemed friendly, but they really didn't rectify the issue with the credit cards quick enough, the line was literally going out the door and they were just trying to "troubleshoot" with the machines. They finally just let everyone go and wrote their names down, but the movie already started. Just poor service. I may come back in the future, but this experience was not a positive one. 2 stars.

    The ladies room, trash overflowing.

The screens in this place are so filthy it's distracting from the out of focus projections.

It's reminiscent of the theaters many of us remember growing up with before the advent of the "multiplex" pavilions. This movie house has old style charm while providing locals with better movies. I almost always want to see whatever is playing here. This isn't necessarily the place you'd come to see the latest blockbuster because most of the time you won't find those movies playing here. I come here because this is where you can find the less than big-budget films. You can find art house films, and the more unusual interesting movies that tend to get much less play elsewhere. You'll get indie movies thrown in the mix and film festival selections that are otherwise hard to track down. Prices are reasonable especially if you go to the first showing of the day when tickets are half price. You can find me up in the balcony, right hand side. I love that the theater has that old fashioned balcony which affords, I think, the best view. The structure itself has an illustrious history having been completed in 1852 after a Hingham women's group came up the idea to build "a commodious and suitable building for Lectures, Picnics and Social Meetings of all kinds." These ladies were able to get the attention of some notable and well-to do citizens in the Hingham community who funded their project all for the sum of $4,435.57. (I love how they recorded that figure down to the cents!). This Greek Revival structure was then modernized in 1936 and became a movie theater. It's in private hands now and is part of the Patriots Cinema chain of theaters. This particular theater retains a strong sense of community and place and is an important fixture in the Hingham community. I enjoy seeing movies here because of the atmosphere and history and I love supporting local treasures like this.

Unless you live downtown or work in the city and catch a movie on your way home there isn't much reason to visit this theater. There are more screens here than Assembly Row or AMC Causeway, but it's less modern. Due to the number of screens there are sometimes events that are only shown here within the area as well. I can tell that this used to be a very nice theater. However, it's in desperate need of renovation. It probably wouldn't take much. Refreshing the lobby, replacing the carpet in the hallways, and maybe an update to some of the larger auditoriums with recliners or AMC's club rockers. It doesn't even need to be all the the auditoriums, especially since there are 19 of them and even though they are just standard seats (outside of the IMAX and Dolby Theater) they're still decent. A word of caution that the IMAX here is a scope screen (so, not as tall as an IMAX usually is, even at a typical chain theater). The Dolby Cinema is good though and better than this location's IMAX. They're still the two best screens here and I would try to book either if you visit this location over any of the others. AMC could return this to a flagship theater experience by renovating common areas and say... 2 auditoriums (into Prime, or additional Dolby Cinemas). Right now though, it's dirtier with fewer amenities and a more difficult to reach (unless you're already downtown) than your other options in the area. All screens are laser projection though, and even 25 (yikes) year old Harry Potter looked fantastic (but Causeway and Assembly are also all laser, too). The employees looked to be doing their best, so I hope AMC invests the money to update this theater.

All the staff I dealt with was great, but it seems they wear multiple hats! And can't be at all the desks at once! Once they noticed me I got everything I needed. They have a lot of food and drink options for a movie theater. They have a regular concession desk and a coffee/booze bar. No pretzels, but I ended up getting the nachos. Movie theater prices, of course. I didn't love the 25 minutes of previews after the posted show time, but all in all a good experience.

The screen wasn't as big as I thought it would be, mostly because I thought it would be larger than the Xplus showings they have in Hanover. The movie looked great and the sound system was superb, but the staff seriously needs to be trained better. The IMAX theater does not have reclining seats and if you wear a hat expect to be asked to remove it by the person in the row in back of you. The confessions stand had stale popcorn and it didn't look like there was any machines to pop the popcorn. While the theater is quite large it has this outdated feel to it like it hasn't been updated since the 90's. We had no problem getting a parking spot. Because it had IMAX movies, I'm sorry to see it go but if Showcase wasn't going to spend some money to update it, it's probably best that they decided to close it.

Tickets are scanned on the first floor, then you head upstairs to the main lobby and cinema area. We waited in line for popcorn, but it moved quickly. I ordered the Wicked strawberry popcorn, which was tasty, though for the price I was disappointed that the bag wasn't filled all the way. The theater itself was really nice. Our showing was nearly sold out, so the room felt lively but not overcrowded. The recliner seats felt newer and were comfortable. The screen was easy to watch since the seating is tiered and rises as you go back. From what I could tell, everything felt clean and well-kept. I was wrongfully accused of trespassing, forcibly removed, and threatened with severe legal action if I did not "cooperate," despite having done absolutely nothing wrong. I was told by staff that there was footage of me previously being escorted out for disorderly conduct. This claim is completely false. I have never been escorted out of this theater, nor have I ever engaged in disorderly behavior. When I stated this, I was still treated as guilty without any proof being shown to me. The situation escalated unnecessarily due to the conduct of two employees: * A male front desk security guard (bald, Afro-Latino appearance with glasses) * A female front desk employee with jet-black short hair and a neck tattoo Both individuals acted aggressively, dismissively, and abused their authority. I was publicly embarrassed, intimidated, and made to feel unsafe. Being threatened with "serious legal consequences" over a fabricated accusation is unacceptable and alarming. This experience reflects extremely poor training, lack of accountability, and reckless misuse of authority. I am requesting that this incident be formally reviewed, that the employees involved be properly disciplined, and that I receive follow-up from management addressing how this situation was allowed to happen. If appropriate action is not taken - including proper investigation and counsel - I will have no choice but to pursue legal action against this institution and the individuals for harassment, defamation, and emotional distress. No customer should ever be treated this way.
