When I was in college and grad school, I loved going to the movies and saw everything and anything that interested me. That hasn't been the case for years now particularly with all the options of enjoying movies at home. A good friend was visiting us from New Jersey for a few days last week and she and I decided to go see Spencer at one of Hingham's local movie theaters. This is a smaller multi-plex and we went to the 4pm showing. The particular theater was on the smaller side and given the time of day was not crowded at all which was nice. What wasn't nice is that walking in, the floor was littered with popcorn. Granted, two young men came in shortly after we arrived and started sweeping but the initial impression was a messy one. What was interesting was that we purchased our tickets a couple of hours ahead of time and then went to have lunch. When we returned to see the movie there was no one collecting tickets. We simply walked into the theater. I would never have done this but it was absolutely unnecessary for us to have had tickets. This is not the fault of the theater but the first 10 minutes or so was filled with actual commercial ads being shown on the screen. Ugh! Best not to come too early so you can avoid this. There were a couple of coming attractions which I always enjoy. I have found that often movie theaters have the sound turned up to a deafening level. Thankfully this was not the case here. The temperature of the theater was comfortable as the other problem is often excessive air conditioning or stuffiness. I still much prefer to watch movies at home. We have set up the family room with a big screen and surround sound. It was pleasant enough to be in an actual theater although this place needs to ensure cleaner floors prior to customers entering, and do a better job of checking tickets. I suspect, like many places, they currently must be short of help. read more

Wow, where do I begin!!!! The whole crew on Sunday was absolutely amazing. they went above and beyond for me and my child who is 5, and it was his first time going to the movie at a theater ever. From my favorite employee Lily whos great with kids and very caring with great interpersonal skills to Cierra and Brendan also John when I tell you these employees need a RAISE I mean it. It was just the little things that really ment the most to me like a cup of ice and couple bags to be able to share our popcorn and the interacting with my so. shout outs to you all, you all really made my baby boys first experience at the movie theater one to remember. The screens in this place are so filthy it's distracting from the out of focus projections.

I have been to this cinema several times and have always enjoyed it each time. If you go during the week it's not that busy so you can always get a good seat to watch whatever movie you're there for. The seating is comfortable and the cinemas are always kept fairly clean. They have a good deal going on every Tuesday where you can get a movie ticket for just five dollars no matter if it's during the day or in the evening which is pretty good considering how much other theaters charge for tickets. The prices at the concession stand are pretty reasonable for the most part and the popcorn is always very fresh tasting. I know for sure that I will be back. read more

I have been having bad luck with movie theaters lately. Okay, this place is small, which I thought would be actually quite nice. Instead, the theater's are dirty, littered with popcorn all over the floors of both the theaters and hallways, the chairs do not recline whatsoever (more like average movie type chairs), and when I came in the entire credit card system was entirely down and they spilled someone's popcorn all over the counter. Honestly, the experience in the movie theater was fine (good quality, good sound); however the service was just so slow and horrible. Cleanliness was horrible and the entire visit just wasn't positive. It also didn't help that it took nearly 20 minutes to find a close parking space (they should have a parking garage here!). Management seemed friendly, but they really didn't rectify the issue with the credit cards quick enough, the line was literally going out the door and they were just trying to "troubleshoot" with the machines. They finally just let everyone go and wrote their names down, but the movie already started. Just poor service. I may come back in the future, but this experience was not a positive one. 2 stars. read more

We thought we'd try this theatre tonight to watch Spector. The place was filthy. After getting our tickets and walking over to the usher to go to screening area we noticed loads of popcorn, straw wrappers and napkins on the floor. In hindsight I should have snapped a picture. There was so much popcorn on the floor it was like someone was using it as confetti. I stopped in the ladies room and the garbage was overflowing. There was toilet paper on the floor and water all over the sink counter. Lastly, the trash can outside our theatre was overflowing! You need more than one can in the hall with so many theaters! You need folks on your team who are keeping their eyes on maintaining a clean environment. If your first image is trash everywhere, then what does that say about the rest of your business? We didn't get anything from the snack bar. We won't be returning. read more

Consistently dirty theaters, no kiosk to pick up tickets purchased online, and does not take AmEx....a chain clearly stuck in the 1970's, except when it comes to concession prices. However it is 5 min away from my home....so it has that going for it. read more

My family and I visited during a very hot day and since we had no air conditioning in the house we rented, it made for an easy decision. We happened to stop in on a Tuesday afternoon and when we paid only $15 for 3 tickets, we almost needed the paddles. Where I come from, you need your credit card for 3 tickets. The staff was friendly and the seating was comfortable. The theatre we were in was clean. Plenty of parking in the mall lot and there are several restaurants nearby to enjoy a meal before or after. read more

This is a great cinema. Sure, the furnishings may not be as new as some of those with the powered seats, but the homey feeling is really something to look forward to. Matter of fact, there's more parking, a nicer staff, better quality theaters (sound and screen), and... $5 Tuesdays are in full effect! Every movie, any screening time is five bucks a ticket all day Tuesday. Between that and the snacks you're sneaking in, it's probably the cheapest date you can have witcha clothes on. Totally alright theater in the Hingham Shipyard. Clean, standard seating, none of the La Z Boy seating of newer mega theaters but it gets the job done. Proximity to lots of dining options (Alma Nove, Boatyard Bistro, Zendo, Wahlburgers) makes this theater a great choice for the old dinner and movie date. And Patriot Cinemas runs a $5 ticket special on Tuesdays that makes this a nice midweek option for catching a flick. read more

I can't believe this isn't five stars across the board. The popcorn is FRESH popped (almost all the other theaters pop in the morning and bag it - gross). The theaters and screens are good, comfortable and clean. They aren't the latest THX or whatever theaters have now and they don't have the fully recline seats like Braintree, or drink service like Dedham or Randolph, but if you are looking to see a movie at a good price, without all the bells and whistles and a great bag of popcorn this is definitely the place. The manager there also clearly loves his work and keeps the place in top notch shape. If you go a lot buy a gift book, you get a book of 5 tickets at the matinee price good for the nighttime movies. read more

Came on Christmas night and it was fairly empty. Perfect since the the waiting area/lobby is tiny. I can't imagine how comfortable the lobby would be on regular night or opening nights for big movies. They only sell candy, popcorn, and nachos so don't expect mega-theater food. The theater itself was comfortable and really good surround sound. This is a place I would go on a slow night and won't expect crazy teenagers running around. read more

Love this place!! It's never ever super crowded and the people that work there are always pleasant. It's a rather small cinema, but they always have the most recent movies. I love this cinema! With 6 screens, Patriot Cinema is able to offer a good mix of shows without being one of those behemoth cinemas where you're so surrounded by video games and snack bars that you can't even find your theater. Not that the theaters in those places are easy to find, with winding hallways and wings. The theaters themselves are clean and have comfortable seating. They are smaller than the behemoth cinemas, but I've never been in a full theater--granted, I tend to go on weeknights after most of the hype of new movies has died down. Only once in three have I ever seen the lobby packed, and that was prime time on a Saturday evening, mostly families. The price is right too, about a dollar cheaper than the other cinemas around, and Tuesdays are $5 all day! Sure, it limits what you get to see, but that's what the internet is for--finding when your ideal movie is showing on the cheap night! Concessions are pricey, but significantly lower than the competition, and you're not inundated with a billion options. Just the basics. Really, you don't need all the bells & whistles of those mega-cinemas because Patriot Cinema has the ideal location, right on the edge of the Hingham Shipyard. Take a day, do your errands, have a nice dinner (and by nice, I mean whatever YOU consider nice--burgers and fries, Asian, pub grub, upscale dining, whatever your heart desires!), then see a movie. This place is a disaster. The cinema was a historical spot showing what old cinemas were like but now it's just AMC's disabled little brother. It's never clean. The workers just leave stuff on the floor. I went there 2 days in a row for my nephew's friends party and found that they had not cleaned the floors. Old popcorn. Also movie nachos are always lazily put together but Patriot Cinema puts microwaved nachos to shame. They just give you a bad a chips and a cup of queso. So disappointing. $5 movies all day every Tuesday? Enough said. The cinema isn't one of those fancy ones with the recliners and all that jazz but it's clean and comfy and if you go on Tuesday's- cheap! I always stop at Trader Joe's right next door for a healthier (and cheaper) snack to bring in with me! The only thing that's odd is that they don't check your tickets so I often wonder if many people just sneak in without paying for a ticket. read more

A great alternative to Randolph! I'm all for the mega-theaters and the features they offer, but a smaller, cozier atmosphere is a great way to see a flick, too. This was our first trip to Shipyard...We stopped at Typhoon for a few Sushi treats and a Japanese brew beforehand and then headed to the cinema to see the late showing of The Social Network. Right away we noticed it was busy but quieter than the general movie mayhem (less kids... I love kids, but very tired of young folks who don't have manners in public). Our tickets were a dollar or so cheaper than most theaters and we weren't bombarded with combo options at concessions. We'll be back. read more

I like this theater a lot. It isn't too big and shows a good range of films (instead of 4 out of 6 screens devoted to Twilight). It's relatively new, so its cleaner than a lot of other theaters like it but possibly only for the time being. This is a great theatre to compliment one of their other theatres Loring Hall. This one plays mainstream movies, is in a great location at the Shipyard and really is convenient to all age groups. There is plenty of parking, and it is wholesome for kids. Its the type of place yu can drop you tweens off and they can grab Pizza etc. and you know they are safe, unlike Randolph. The theater is new, so i find it cleaner than most, I also find the concessions right on pricing target, if not a little cheaper, they also have a great kids package. The staff is friendly and proeffesionala nd I ahve never felt like the theater was crowded with obnoxious people. All in all I think this is the best all around basic movie theater venue experience. This theater is a little out of the way but there is so much around it that it will be worth the trip. It's tiny but never feels crowded. I was here on a overcast Saturday on a holiday weekend and it was busy. I love the Patriot Cinemas at Hingham Shipyard! It's a cool mix of a cinema with modern amenities (state of the art sound, stadium seating, etc) that in its context sensitive design for fitting into the Shipyard development has the charm of small town movie houses that I grew up with. You won't find enormous 300+ person auditoriums here...most of the auditoriums for the six screens here are on the fairly small side. You won't find a concession stand with the endless array of snack foods the huge multiplexes boast. Nope...just the basics. Popcorn, candy, soda, and icees. And you won't find a huge lobby...rather it's a pretty cozy lobby about the size of a large living room. It's a beautiful place to catch a flick. I've always encountered nothing but courteous service with a smile there. Only reason for the 4 stars rather that 5 is the aforementioned small lobby. If there are a couple screenings of new release movies waiting to go in, in can get a little crowded in there. read more

Well the theater it self is really nice. There are pictures of the shipyard from the 20's all over the place and that's really cool. The seats don't recline and the film was messed up. I saw Harry Potter and there was a huge orange line going through the screen for like half the movie. The screen also went black at one point and it took about a minute to get the movie to start again. At least it was really clean. read more

Theaters are always dirty. Every time I've been there the floors are sticky and popcorn coated. Doesn't seem to matter if it's an evening show or matinee. Often times the ticket seller is also the concession seller. And, in my experience doesn't don gloves or wash hands in between handling cash and food. Yuck. read more

I'll give it 2 stars just because I have seen worse (i.e., Camo in S Weymouth), but at the last 2 movies there have been major technical issue. First at a G-rated movie filled with kids, they played a violent R movie for 10 minutes before someone stopped it, people actually left with their like kids (I should have known after thinking the previews were inappropriate for my 3 yr old! ). Then during Cars 2, the sound went out causing another emergency run to the front clerk to wake up whoever runs the movie. The only reason this place has customers is because of the location, meaning: there isnt any other movie theater around. This place is in a brand new, multi-million dollar development and it is already looking old. No reclining seats, teens everywhere, and 14 year olds working the counters. Came to see lego batman today although for the screaming crying kids that are way to little to be let in a theater that ruined not my sons time but my time I will give this theatre a A because the people who work here are very sweet my 5 year old spilled his soda all over him although I had half of change of cloths in the car he had no shirt someone went beyond and found a promotional shirt for him and that was very sweet and that's the kind of management that is good and stands out . I cannot believe the antiquated system this cinema has for online tickets. No where does it state that you have to wait in line even if you have already purchased your tickets.. When I asked for a refund the manager who is also selling the tickets refunded the amount of the face value of the ticket and did not mention that the service fee was not refunded. The question is what did I pay a service fee for if I stood in line out the door a half hour before my show started and got halfway through the line to hear him announce that there where only front row seats left. This should be clearly stated on website next to where the purchase tickets on line tab is. Shame on you Patriot Cinemas!!!! read more

Went here this past Sunday to see Dallas Buyer's Club. It was the only theater anywhere on the South Shore showing this movie. It was 3:45 in the afternoon. The woman behind the snack counter was an absolute bitch..She could have cared less about customers. Not even sure why she was even working there period. I'm sure there are lots of people who love to take her job. The movie was sold out and there were people walking in bitching and complaining trying to find seats during the first 5 mintues of the movie. I go to the movies at least 4-5 times a week at Showcase cinemas and AMC and this would NOT happen if it was sold out. An usher would be in the theater to make sure everyone could be seated properly so no one is disturbed during the movie starting! Also..the place was absolutely filthy..including the bathrooms...I'm not sure I'll be in any big rush to head back to this theater...ONLY if there is another movie not showing again... read more
