I love our local movie theater. It's a one screen wonder in a historic building and a throw-back to earlier times when going to a movie wasn't such an overwhelming experience of choices, noise and commotion. It's reminiscent of the theaters many of us remember growing up with before the advent of the "multiplex" pavilions. This movie house has old style charm while providing locals with better movies. I almost always want to see whatever is playing here. This isn't necessarily the place you'd come to see the latest blockbuster because most of the time you won't find those movies playing here. I come here because this is where you can find the less than big-budget films. You can find art house films, and the more unusual interesting movies that tend to get much less play elsewhere. You'll get indie movies thrown in the mix and film festival selections that are otherwise hard to track down. Prices are reasonable especially if you go to the first showing of the day when tickets are half price. You can find me up in the balcony, right hand side. I love that the theater has that old fashioned balcony which affords, I think, the best view. The structure itself has an illustrious history having been completed in 1852 after a Hingham women's group came up the idea to build "a commodious and suitable building for Lectures, Picnics and Social Meetings of all kinds." These ladies were able to get the attention of some notable and well-to do citizens in the Hingham community who funded their project all for the sum of $4,435.57. (I love how they recorded that figure down to the cents!). This Greek Revival structure was then modernized in 1936 and became a movie theater. It's in private hands now and is part of the Patriots Cinema chain of theaters. This particular theater retains a strong sense of community and place and is an important fixture in the Hingham community. I enjoy seeing movies here because of the atmosphere and history and I love supporting local treasures like this. read more

Nice theater in downtown of Hingham. Area. Shows good movies to date and enjoyed by folks. Tuesday 6 dollars are a great price, Cizy but a little warm today. Paid 6.50 for crappy bag of pop corn. Clearly not fresh and sml kernels like from the bottom of fresh if it was made fresh. It was a two o'clock show so it should have been freshly made there. Disappointing bag. Told the snack bar cashier and showed Him. No response. read more

This is a special place for me. I saw my first movie at the Loring - The Sound of Music. That was a long time ago, but I've lived the movies ever since. I love going to the small theaters like this best - much better than the Megaplex theaters that are todays norm. I wish I still lived in the area, as I would be a regular at the Loring. read more

Once upon a time, Debra L. went on her very first "car date" back in High School. The date consisted of seeing a movie at the Loring Hall Theatre and then getting an ice cream sundae at Brigham's next door. My date was swoon-worthy and this may be why I have such an emotional bond with this theatre. Back in the day, you could see any popular movie here. Case in point, we saw "Throw Momma from the Train" on the above mentioned car date. I've recently moved back to the South shore and this is one of the few (maybe the only?) places where you can see smaller, independant films. Though not all are "small". I saw Black Swan here a few weeks ago and "The King's Speech" is playing now. I went alone and I loved every minute of being in this theatre. The theatre is small and it's old and they only play one movie. The screen is small too and the seats are not particularly comfortable, but that is all part of the allure. Anyone can go to a multiplex but this kind of theatre is a dying breed. Plus, it's located in downtown Hingham which is a beautiful spot. Plus, I saw a movie and bought a snack on a snowy Sunday afternoon and I only spent $10.50 total. read more

I live 20 minutes away in Quincy, and this is pretty much ALWAYS where I go to see a movie. Braintree might have it beat for comfort and leg room, and Randolph for the number of screens... but with it's one screen, Loring Hall always has the best of the lesser-known (and often award-winning) films. Loring is also located in picturesque downtown Hingham, which makes it a great destination for a quiet date night. There are a lot of great restaurants in the area and the harbor is a stone's throw away. I believe the seats in the theater were just re-done, however this isn't one of those movie theaters where you can sprawl out and put your feet up. It is comfortable enough, though. The only issue I ever had was when we went to see Lincoln and it was so crowded that we had to go sit up in the balcony. The seats in the balcony seemed to be much smaller with little leg room, and I got kind of claustrophobic. But other than that one time it has never been crowded! read more

Loring Hall is an older movie theater that used to be a church years ago, located in downtown Hingham, close to shopping like ice cream shops. Free parking is available and easy to find. Tickets are inexpensive and they show second run indie and some Hollywood films. There is a concession stand. Cons: the bathrooms are outdated and the heating system at times does not work well, so bring a sweater in the winter. One of my favorite non-mall movie theaters on the South Shore, located maybe 2 minutes off Route 3A. read more

Sure, Loring Hall is a little run-down, and the seats aren't all that comfortable, but that's half its charm. It's a rare bird of a dying species: the small, community movie theater that focuses on showing the movies that locals want to see, not just the ones that Hollywood tells us we want to see. I moved to the Hingham area well beyond my high school dating years, but every time I go to Loring with my wife I have flashbacks to romantic interludes of youth that never actually occurred. The theater is every bit the idyllic institution that the AMC and Regal megaplexes of the world are not. As other reviewers have noted, there's just no beating a movie followed by a short stroll down the street to the center of Hingham where ice cream awaits. Though I have to say, I favor Nona's ice cream over Brigham's. But I'll save that for another review. read more

Thank goodness for this theatre. Its nice to know there is still a small, neighborhood theatre that has not been demolished. They show mainstream movies, its intimate, seats are comfortable, location is convenient, street parking and its a joy to go to this place and feel nostalgic. And.. because its small, you don't have tons of people talking or interpreting to someone else, just a nice group that wants to see a movie. read more

Sadly Loring Hall is the only screen on the entire South Shore where one can view an art-house film before it goes to DVD. That's a shame, because as cute and homey as the place is, the comforts and technology are in dire need of updating. After all the investment Patriot cinemas made in updating the Hanover Cinema, it's a travesty that they don't devote one or more of those screens to films that can only be seen at the Kendall or Coolidge Corner. read more

The price's are great. And the popcorn is fresh and the drinks are not watered down. However do not go to this theater in the afternoon. That's when the rude elderly Hinghamites come out in full force. I was sitting on the back but before the movie started I went to get popcorn and a drink. When I got back to my seat this old woman was standing there at my seat. I stood there and she said where are you going. I said right there that is my seat your in front of. She said well I sit here all the time. I said this is my seat and my jacket is already there. So with that she moved. then while the movie was going on another woman kept laughing and talking. So my advice is dont go here if the old rude hinghamites are there. I don't know why they think they can act that way. read more

I wish this place was 5 star, but it at least needs cup holders for their $4 sodas!!! I love this place and that it has movies that are hard to find elsewhere. I don't like that they close the concession stand within minutes of the start of the movie, so if you're late, no popcorn for you. I'm find with the uncomfortable seats and old screen, etc. - it's kind of nostalgic. It's nice to get lost in a movie in this place - but I wish they added kid's packs that they have at other patriot cinemas - and kept the concession open for at least 30 minutes until after the movie starts! read more

I want Loring to be 5 stars, but sadly it needs updating. I've always loved going here and the experience could very easily be brought to that level (or not so easily, cause it would take quite a bit of investment). The films played are very nice, not the usual big budget movies. I love the small-town movie theater feel and the balcony seating. However, the seats themselves can be quite uncomfortable as previous noted, and the sound system verges on horrendous at times. However, I will still continue to go here, since I love theaters that have this kind of old-time vibe. read more

Yeah, Alexandra said it all! Love this theatre, meet my daughter there when there's a movie we both want to see....and it's a bit of a ride for both of us. Forget the ice cream afterwards, there are great spots nearby for dinner.....(we go to an early show)...Pizza, burgers, or posh restaurants, whatever your craving. read more
