The fact that Pats has a low rating on here is ridiculous. Everyone at Pats is fair, kind, knowledgeable and doesn't take advantage. They are upfront on pricing and always give good and fast service. If they can't do something they always let you know, and recommend places that might. I have had my Alfa Romeo Guilia serviced here many times after being turned away by several other shops, my dad has had his stinger and Aston Martin serviced here with no issues. It is hard to find a mechanic you can trust when you move to a new state. I have had a couple of good experiences with Pat's so far. They charge about a $120 more for a battery than other shops so be warned about that. Took my car for oil change and inspection in April. They said battery was low and quoted me a price of $147 for new battery not including tax or labor, but I could wait to replace since the battery still had some charge. Took the car back in September for oil change and asked them to check battery. They said battery was fine (but it really wasn't, it appears that they did not actually perform a diagnostic) and said to wait to replace until the weather was cold. Took the car back in December because battery was failing. They did a diagnostic and said battery was almost dead. They said a new battery would cost $264 because supplier did not supply the $147 battery anymore. I said no thanks and went to another shop and had a new battery with a better warranty installed for $160, including tax and labor. read more

I brought my car here recently because my battery light was continuously coming on and then going back off. The light often came on after going over bumps, which made me think the issue could be stemming from faulty ground wiring or something of the like. I told this to the staff, and assumed that they would thoroughly trouble shoot the issue. The staff were all friendly and helpful. In retrospect, I believe this is what gave me a false sense of security. Surely these nice people wouldn't try to pull one over on a stressed out single mom of an infant of limited means driving a rusty old toyota? I was wrong. They called me after about 6 hours (they told me it would take 1 or 2) to let me know that the alternator was bad. This didn't sound right to me, but I'm not a mechanic. I asked them again to double check and trouble shoot any wiring issues. Long story short, I ended up paying $500 for a new alternator that day and, surprise, the issue was never fixed. The battery light came back on two days later, with all of the same symptoms. I tried contacting pats by phone and by email several times since. I wanted to support a local business by choosing pats, but I feel like I was lied to and taken advantage of. I have had much more honest service done at Midas, and at least there you have some recourse if the repairs haven't been done properly. read more

Took my ford expedition in as I was feeling a slight hesitation and just wanted them to see if they could find anything with their scanners and such. They took it out on drives, scanned it, etc and could not find anything. I expected to pay for a couple of hours diag work. When I picked it up, they said no charge! Can you believe that? So I am pretty savvy when it comes to car repair and take car of most things myself. However, I always like to stop in and get quotes for things to see how honest local auto repair shops are. Because I live in the area, I have stopped by and asked the guys for quotes several times on things from timing belt changes, GEM module replacements, brake pads and rotor turning, coolant leaks, etc. and they always seem honest about diagnosing the problem. I mean, they never say something completely wrong....BUT they OVERCHARGE for EVERYTHING but inspections. Although honest, I would suggest finding value at another shop. FYI...they also tow cars and there is a body repair shop behind the facility that appears to do quality work. They have a fenced in lot, so any cars towed or left are safe. read more

Well, after seeing the review, I went for my car repair when my window on the driver's side got stuck and not going up but only going down. So since it is of more urgent matter, I decided to go to this shop instead of my other shop which is not open for Sat.. Boy, did I make a mistake or what!! The power switch (main one) that they got for me was charged at~ $150... It does not even look like of high quality. My car is over 10 years old and not very fancy. I looked online after and it looked like about ~$50 (even the nicer ones are mostly under $100) and my does not seem to be one of the nicer ones. And, I was curious and also was pressured for time, so I was keeping a close eye on when the part arrived and how long it took to finish the job. The installation is about 30-40min tops, and even with 10min initial evaluation (they did not even take the switch apart, so it can not be more than 10min and my guess is about 5 min. or so), they CHARGED Me ~ 1 hour and 5 min. of labor. It is a rip off. The bad thing is that although I had a bad feel about it, I had no choice since I need to move in to my new place that weekend and my window broke Friday night really late. So I really needed to get it fixed and did not have much time shopping around on a Sat.. So I got over charged and had to take it. Too bad for me. The whole thing came out to be slightly over $250 which is a lot to just change a power switch. You make the judgement if you are familiar with those things. I thought I will let everyone know in case others being taken advantaged as well. I really appreciate honesty. Although the people are very friendly, but I am not sure if the work ethics there is good. If you want to charge more, just charge a higher labor fee, not cheating by adding time to your time sheet. Please, people are not stupid and even when we do not know much about cars, I still can count time and have a gut feel about how things go. Plus there are others who do know more. It is not hard to compare notes. This is not the right way to treat your customer!!! read more

Bought two tires there, had a flat one day and when I went to remove the wheel found it was obviously over-torqued and had a stripped stud. I'd owned the car over 10 years and removed/installed the wheels a number of times with no problems, I know EXACTLY where the problem was created. When questioned, they wouldn't even answer an Email. I had Pat's do several things for me when I moved to town a few years ago. The prices are high, so be aware of that before you go. After talking with locals and doing some research, I started going to other places for repairs and inspections. Recently, I decided to give them another chance, mainly because I was looking for an AC Delco battery and they were one of the listed dealers in town and located close by. I was quoted $246 for the battery I was looking for at Pat's. The same battery at several other places in town turned out to be $158! And yes, it was for the exact same model number, unless Pat's made a mistake when they looked up the price. I even asked them to double check because I was shocked that they would be that much more expensive. This was just for the cost of the battery and did not include any labor charges - I just wanted to purchase the battery. That's 64% more expensive than other local dealers! There are plenty of reasonably priced garages in Wilmington, I suggest you find one and avoid Pat's! read more

Noticed a low tire on my wife's SUV this morning. Pumped it up to where I could drive on it. Was running out of time due to a pending road trip tomorrow. Took it in to Pat's and asked if they could determine the problem. They found a small nail in the tire and repaired. ALL THIS IN 30 MINUTES AND THEY CHARGED $10.00!! Moved down here last year and not knowing really where to take my wife's car I took it to see "Pat Man" because he's here to save the day! Well that's what they advertise anyways. My wifes car had a noise in the front right and I wasn't sure what it was. Took it there they said the front was fine but it needs rear brakes and rotors. I changed them 6 months prior so I knew they weren't bad. I myself have been in the car business 15 years but I paint cars know some mechanical but not a whole lot. But I change my own oil and do the brakes rotors calipers. My wife and I picked up the car after we told them to hold off and I will get a second opinion. Well a week later her wheel falls off the car and they told me they never pulled the wheel off and that they are not responsible. I'm thinking ok well I brought this car to you with a noise in the front right and you never pulled the wheel off to see what could be wrong with it? Doesn't sound right to me. After we go back an forth over the issue they came to the conclusion that someone must have tried stealing the wheel and thats why the lug nuts were never tightened. Kind of hard to do when the car is kept in a garage! So all said an done I was out $500 after the repairs were made to the car and a rental car paid while it was being fixed and the tow to the shop that fixed it. All I asked them for was to make it right and they did nothing I mean NOTHING to even try. Im just blessed that my wife was on a side road when this happened and not the interstate. God only knows if she would have even been hurt or worse yet killed. So just be careful when approaching a business.... do your research I thought I did but they are not who they advertise to be. "PAT MAN" didnt save my day could have cost my wife her life but that didnt mean anything to them. read more

I brought my truck in to have some tires put on and I was informed I needed to replace the front brakes as well. The brakes in question were a little pricey but I was told that the brakes for that year model only came as one component or assembly so that they could not get just the part that they needed. Sometime within 6 months of the repair I noticed some noticeable vibration when applying the brakes. I took it back in to have them take a look and I was told that it was a worn tire causing the vibration most likely due to a bent chassis that was causing it to wear badly. Approximately one year later I took it to another auto repair shop because I no longer live in the Wilmington area and by this time the vibration was really bad. I ended up having to replace the front brakes again. We have tried repeatedly to speak with someone concerning this issue either through email or phone but cannot get a response. There was a warranty on the brakes and work of a year I believe. Not to mention that when I had to have the the brakes replaced for a second time within that year I paid about a third less than I did at Pat's. Do yourself a favor and find another repair shop. read more

Went to Pat's on Saturday to get my car inspected like I have in the past. I was told they could not pass my car due to the fact I needed 4 new tires. Told the tech I have run flat tires and they have less than 20K miles on them. He was happy to give me several quotes on new tires. Left Pats and went down the street where I had my car inspected and guess what, it passed inspection. The business owner told me my tires were fine and well above the min requirement to pass inspection. I will never go to Pat's Tire again! Went there for an inspection and was failed due to a crack in my taillight. Yet, according to the state of North Carolina, a cracked taillight is passable as long as there is no upstanding water in the light or there is no white light showing. According to Pat's, there was no record of either the upstanding water or white light showing within my taillight. Therefore it should've passed. When I questioned it, I was told he failed it just for being cracked. Also, for a normally $100 repair, they wanted to charge me $330 to get it fixed! Not to mention that the person who recommended me here for an inspection, had a non-functioning instrument panel and a broken sway bar (which should've failed her under suspension) had passed her inspection with flying colors. Guess that should've been my first clue as to what kind of place this is. Luckily my regular mechanic will be able to take care of my car next week for a much more reasonable price because I will never go here again. read more

I was having an issue in my truck that I couldnt place. I took it to Pats on a Friday and asked them to diagnose and fix the problem. This was early in the morning. I had to call them back late in the afternoon to find out anything. Was told it was my steering box and tie rod ends. Also a brake line busted when they were driving it. Its an older truck. They quoted me at just over a thousand dollars to fix. I assumed that the diagnosis would fix the problem. I got the truck back the following wednesday and drove it home. I thought I could still feel a bit of the clunking problem so I took it back and the mechanic test drove it. He said it drove fine. I drove it for about a week and a half and the same thing starts happening again. I took it back to pats and they said that another part needed to be fixed. I said ok, well if I pay you another 300 dollars will that fix the problem so I can drive it proper? He said, maybe, we will see. Thats where we are going to start. I am not a happy camper right now. I feel like I got screwed. I took it to them because I thought they were proper mechanics. My mistake. Dont go to Pats. read more
