I have been coming to Pat's on and off for several years now. It's a quaint little neighborhood market that offers a variety of fresh produce, shelf stable products, made to order deli sandwiches - and most importantly - a full service butcher. Cooking is a hobby of mine and taking on new challenges is part of what I like. A couple years ago, I decided to take up making beef jerky. While I had a recipe in hand and ready to go - selecting the right cut of meat was another story. I went to Pat's and had a lovely chat with a gentleman that works there who also makes his own jerky. He was able to not only guide me in what cut of meat to go with, but also how it needed to be cut. It was so very helpful. I also come here every year to pick up a prime rib roast for Christmas Eve dinner. They offer an option to reserve this online a few weeks in advance - selecting the pound range and the day you wish to pick it up. The market is a mad house leading up to the holiday - but this feature helps to make it a little easier. And, the quality of the meats is top notch. And with that said - I need to pop over there this afternoon to pick up some house made chorizo to make a queso fundido for a holiday party this weekend. Check them out! We've been going to Pat's Meat Mart for a couple of years now, and they never disappoint. The energy here is unmatched. You walk in, and it's a bit chaotic, but in the best way possible. People are calling out their orders, the butchers are making cuts, someone's paying -- it's a compact space, but it just works. They have every cut of meat you can imagine -- we even saw alligator on our last visit. We've tried a few of their meats, from ground beef to pork to most recently duck, and we're always happy with both the quality and the prices. The service is also fantastic. Somehow, they're always well-staffed, and the team is quick, friendly, and really helpful. A couple of other things to note: they offer produce, local goods (ice cream, baked goodies), breads, butters, cheeses, etc. It's more than just a meat market! So thrilled to find a real-deal butcher here in Portland! The spicy Italian sausage is fantastic; I used it in a cacciatore and the flavor really held up to the tomato sauce. Their roasting chickens are the tastier smaller size (not some bloated, corporate-produced horror). I also recently I had some veal cutlets that were absolutely delicious--and I appreciate that they were perfectly pounded out and packed individually, which is super helpful if you want to thaw one at a time. I asked about rabbit and apparently they have that too, so I'm looking forward to trying it (it's something that's not easy to find). I think the pricing is pretty good: maybe more than Hannaford but definitely not as much as Whole Foods, and with this quality, you won't regret it. I'll happily eat less meat and get the good stuff when I do buy it, you know? There's also a small grocery section and deli--they carry Morse's sauerkraut, yay!--and you can easily pick up a handful of grocery items, produce, spices, or a bottle of wine. This place is amazing in SO many ways... Of course, this is absolutely the place to get your holiday meats. Turkeys for Thanksgiving, roasts for Christmas, ham for Easter, this place has it all. They make it super easy to pre-order exactly what you need, and it is always the highest quality. They are happy to help you decide on sizes, seasonings, and ways to prepare everything you buy here. Their spice selections are amazing, their meats are truly top notch. Don't believe me? Buy a whole chicken at the grocery store, and one here, and tell me which one is better. This one, by FAR. Can't explain what it is, just everything from here tastes better, is more tender, and honestly isn't that much more than buying the lesser quality from the big name store. Moving here from Philly last February, I was concerned about finding a really good meat market/butcher. We were spoiled by the ones lining 9th Street in the Italian market area--many of which have been in business for 75-100 years. Well, Pat's fills the bill quite nicely. Their Italian (hot) sausage is wonderful. It has the perfect heat, and is very flavorful. On our last visit, we decided to splurge on a T-bone steak. The ones we've bought from Hannaford and Shaw's were mediocre. We will be buying our steak from Pat's from now on. It was absolutely delicious, and well-worth the higher price. If you love a good cut of beef, you shouldn't go anywhere else. We also bought their burger blend on that same trip. Out of this world! I know--you don't normally hear that description about plain ol' hamburger meat, but it's appropriate here. We happened to have guests when we cooked the burgers, and they provided unsolicited approval! To top it all off, the staff is knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. And the store is well-organized and clean. They have a deli, too--so stop by and grab a lunch when the need arises! read more

I'm shedding manly tears of joy right now. Quietly to myself of course. Why? Because I'm overcome with emotion over this beautiful BLT from Pat's. Just look at it! This is the BLT recruiting poster that all other BLTs say "When I grow up, I want to be like him." Porky & friends compete to be chosen for this special sandwich duty. Many are called, few are chosen. In fact, this sandwich is built like America used to build everything. Big & outrageously good. I've waited nearly six decades to find such a master crafted hand built pile of bacon heaped on ripe tomatoes and crunchy as the bacon, lettuce. All of it is tucked into these two slices of thick cut white bread...loaded with Mayo. Yes Mayo,. More Mayo please. That's good...no wait, a lot more please. Thank you...I have to pause here....the tears are flowing again...I just took another bite. I'm sorry. It's, it's just so good. After driving by this place about a thousand times, I finally decided to try it. I found the staff to be very helpful on the phone. The shop is also very nice, there are tables to eat there which I thought was great. Their meats are displayed in a case and look amazing, I will definitely be back to try something from their butchery. However, in terms of takeout it was very unclear where to go. They don't have "order here" or "pickup here" signs or anything to help. Myself and one other person had to ask where to pick up orders in the time I was there. I did enjoy the food, my sandwich was large but simple and the ingredients were flavorful and fresh. The bread was also great. I will say that with competition like the Local Press and Rosemont Bakery nearby, it's hard to compete with the sandwhich options, but overall the experience was good. I will be back to try the meats for sure. read more

I recently decided to start switching my meat game to local meats from locally owned businesses, and I'm glad I did! Did you know you can get farm fresh eggs here from Sebago Lake?! If you're not used to farm fresh, give it a try! The flavor will blow your mind (no joke, you'll never want to go back) and there are no dangerous additives! Pat's really caters to their customers. They will make ground beef tailored for your dietary needs. When I was dieting, they made me 99% lean ground beef on demand, and it was tremendous. Want a special treat? The Stevens Avenue store fronts are welcoming and cozy. In this area of Stevens Ave is the home of Pat's meat market. Pat's has everything you need to make a great meal from fresh produce, sandwiches, deli meats and cheeses to name just a few of the wonderful items available here. The second part of the store, where you check out, is also where the meat counter is located. Behind this counter are a group of mostly men servers who take each person through their experience answering questions big and small. They have a fantastic selection of sausages and have tried almost all of them. The Chicken pesto and the sweet Italian are my favorite so far. The Lebanese sausage wasn't to my liking but many people order it when I am there. I enjoy their marinated steak tips. On one of my trips here I wanted to make Oriental beef with broccoli and when I was ordering beef cubes, he inquired as to what I would be making with it and I told him. He stopped in his tracks and said you should use skirt steak instead, it is a better cut of meat for what I wanted. He was spot on! It was the most flavorful and tender beef and broccoli I have made! Pat's is a real, neighborhood butcher, and an attached sandwich place. I went to the butcher side and saw that they had a pile of pastrami, which they told me they have been buying for many years. It sort of looked like "pulled" pastrami, or shredded, but it was very reasonable, so I got half a pound, easily enough for two big sandwiches. Meat was fine, a little tasty fat mixed in with the meat. The torpedo roll wasn't really big enough to fit all the meat I wanted into it; I wishd I would have gotten some other bread! we also had a great rare roast beef sandwich. Also reasonable and very tasty. they say that they make it there. all in all, pretty decent (but why don't they sell the pastrami on the sandiwch side of the store, I don't know) read more

Oh my lord - this place is legit. I'm a Nebraska native who now lives on the southern east coast, and you just can't GET good meat. We visited my brother and sister in law in Maine this past summer and WOW. The steaks we picked up here reminded me of what I used to grow up with as a child. The store is one of those small mom-and-pop sort of set ups packed with tons of extras, and you can get just about any cut you're looking for in great quality. I have been a devoted customer at Pat's Meat Mart for the past 20 years. Originally I came specifically for the meats and would pick up a few extra items along the way like bread or one of their big hunks of cheddar. Over time Pat's revisioned the deli side of their shop and started making fresh soups, salads and hot lunch items every day. That is when I changed from an occasional to a regular. Pat's has fair prices on meats and make a giant array of sausages in house. They will also custom trim anything request. The deli side of the store has a pretty solid array of fruits and vegetables for sale on the way to the back counter. They have an impressive selection of deli meats and cheeses sold by the pound. They also make fresh green salads, potato and pasta salads, soups and any kind of sandwich you can construct in your mind. I am almost hesitant to mention this, but they have, hands down the BEST BLT in town. Filled with crispy, thick bacon from the meat market, fresh tomatoes and lettuce on soft local bread, for about $5. YES it is worth a special trip, and YES it is that good! If you are in a hurry, they have pre-made salads and veggie or meat sandwiches on focaccia bread. I will often stop in on a Friday after work to stock the fridge for the weekend. I think of the deli counter at Pat's as serving the kind of food I would make at home if I had the time. read more

Pat's Meat Mart is first and foremost a butcher, and for that it is top notch, best in the city! They also carry a limited supply of grocery items, including a deli and fresh produce section. In the morning they offer freshly brewed coffee. I buy all of my meat at Pat's because of the availability of cuts, freshness of the meat, and exceptionally high quality -plus they make the best sausages. They often times will cut the meat right in front of you with a big cleaver on a huge wooden cutting board, which is a nice touch. I tend to stay away from the produce, since it looks to be a bit sketchy, so I save that purchase for a different small grocer near by. If anything, buy your grilling steaks at Pat's this summer, you'll never go back to styro-wrapped steaks again! read more

Despite rave reviews from my coworkers who visit often for lunch, this was my first time there, and wasn't sure what to expect. I had a tough time deciding, but I ended up going with the haddock and clam chowder from the specials board. They hit it out of the park. The chowder was completely amazing. Very high quality ingredients, and filled with a ton of clams, big haddock chunks and nice potatoes. It came with a great piece of baguette too. The place has a really friendly atmosphere, too. Pat's I love you, but why can't you be open on Sunday! Pat's has the best homemade sausages. I've had their mild, hot pork sausage,the chicken pesto, and chicken Parmesan sausages. My favorite being the mild and chicken parm sausages. Sometimes when I get the chicken parm it can be a tad salty so watch out for that. The marinated lamb burger is also delicious, paired with some tzatziki sauce, yum! Had another great experience at Pat's Meat Mart. Went in for sirloin for a family dinner of 10 people and one of the butchers convinced me to get tri-tip even though it was less expensive . In short, the tri-tip was a huge success! This type of recommendation is why everyone should go to Pat's. The staff is very pleasant and incredibly helpful, but mostly the meat is first class. I had a bad experience at Pat's yesterday. I went in and saw that most stuff was gone out of the meat counter. I saw that they didn't have what I wanted and attempted to leave twice. Both times an aggressive guy behind the counter kept insisting he'd get me what I wanted from the back. Eventually I just gave in because I didn't want to be rude. Long story short, I put the meat I got from them in the fridge overnight and was going to divide it up for meals the next day. When I opened the packs up, the meat was just hastily thrown into paper and meat juices were leaking all over the place. Both things that I got, burger and chops, looked less than desirable. The hamburger was definitely rotten, it had a smell. The pork was suspect too because it was slimy and kind of gray. I'll be returning it all tomorrow when they are open. I went to their biggest competitor (on the west end) and had a much better experience. The meat was fresher and clearly refrigerated better in the meat counter. They also put their meat in plastic, which seals in freshness and lets the cold get to the meat, unlike the wads of paper Pat's wraps theirs in. I won't ever use them again. The aggressive counter staff irritated me even more because I took a look at their selection and didn't want their products. I only bought anything because they pushed me into it in front of other customers. It was embarrassing. read more
