A couple Fridays back I was going to a Milwaukee Milkman game and wanted dinner somewhere on the south side beforehand. Of course, being a Friday, I wanted fish. Of the options I had bookmarked that I had never been to, Pat's Oak Manor was my choice that day. I went with the all you can eat beer battered cod and potato pancakes. The potato pancakes were stellar. While not crispy, they were mostly firm on the outside, so they stayed together pretty well, and the flavor on the inside was an array of potato, onion, and spices. I made a good choice and they make a good potato pancake. The beer battered cod was good, though the third piece on my initial plate was getting a little soggy on the bottom by the time I got to it due to the grease in the breading. The rest of the fish I got during my meal didn't have that problem. I was impressed with how quickly they were able to get additional plates of cod out, although I would have preferred the option of more than only two pieces at a time. Even though the banquet hall was getting full and I only saw three people waiting tables, the person waiting on me seemed to be pleasant and in good spirits. The food here isn't great, but the prices are. Every night there's some food special, and it's a very popular neighborhood bar so arrive early and don't expect to get your food too quickly. It's okay there are also always drink specials, it's a beer on tap place so don't order anything fancy. It took two phone calls to order food for take out.After literally screaming the order because they take the order behind the bar.What they didn't tell us was the additional charge for condiments.They also charge a take out fee and charged for TWO takeouts. The order was ready on time. Upon opening the bag the condiments we paid for were left out,another trip back to get them. Beware of the additional charges and check you order before you leave. Back again for a delish hot fish fry!! We frequent here and tonight with the snow, we missed the piano man with live music, but they reassured us he was doing well- just not coming out in the storm. Service, as always, was pleasant and attentive! The fish was really good and the fries too. We enjoyed the little cup of slaw and piece of rye bread. Went for fish fry. Wanted to sit outside. Was told no outside waitress but could order to go and take outside. While sitting outside, the 2 other outside tables received waitress service, real silverware, bottles of ketchup and tartar sauce. We were charged an extra "takeout fee" even though it's not what we wanted and we were the only ones who didn't get service from the waitress. She did not come to our table once! For the price, there are no fish fries better. I love the family style setting meets dive bar feeling that they have going on. The place isn't that big and it can get crowded on a Friday night but that's half the fun. Whenever I drag my husband back to my home town, he insists on Pat's for a Friday fish fry. He likes the bluegill and not many places have it. I stick with the shrimp. Both are very good. We actually like the atmosphere a lot. From the bowling alley floors to the cool old guy playing the keyboard, it's a hoot. Service is fast and friendly. $2.50 burger and fries....Where else can you get a better deal?! Pats definitely gets 5 stars when it comes to their consistency and value they bring to the table every time I've come here. My boyfriend and his family have been coming here for years and it's no wonder keep coming back. The burgers are always perfect and their fries are the perfect kind of crispy. The bartenders are always very friendly and take care of you whenever you need anything. Drinks are made well and you can't argue with the prices. I love how the bar is set up where each side faces it's own TV, not a bad seat in the house. Like any other Milwaukee bar, they have their Friday fish frys (also fantastic) and don't miss out on the other specials they have during the week. Pats is your top notch neighborhood bar! read more

***FYI: my father in law plays the piano here for the Friday fish fry. This review is based on the services we have received here related to our November 2009 wedding.*** My husband and I had our wedding reception here November of 2009. My inlaws held a get together the day before for the wedding party and family members close to the family. My husband's side of the family also held a wedding shower in the larger hall of Pat's Oak manor. This place isn't fancy, but it is very nice for parties and other get togethers when you need a space. There are two halls, a large and a small one, which can be reserved. For our wedding we reserved both halls, for the shower my husband's family reserved the large hall only. For the family get together we did not reserve a hall but large number of seats during the fish fry. Depending on the day you reserve you may have to order catering; for some you don't have to but you can. The prices for catering are wonderful, for our wedding we ordered a ton of food (much more then we needed, but who cares its a party!) and it came out cheaper then we could find at most places. After the first round of people were fed, the owner went around to tables to offer seconds, thirds, etc. I was a vegetarian at the time (now a vegan) and they left the meat out of a spaghetti dish they had available. They do cake cutting and bar service. The bartender who served our guests that night was very nice, he even folded cake boxes when he wasn't serving drinks. The place is also a regular neighborhood bar, and guests who wanted harder drinks could simply go into the bar area and order them. They provide the linens, space, alcohol/ soda options and food. Any special decorations you have to have put in yourself before the occasion and you will have to clean up them after the festivities are over. The large hall can have space for a band/ DJ if you want one. For the shower we brought a lot of our own food but also ordered a few dishes from Pats. Everyone seemed to be having a good time; I was a little too busy opening gifts to get any more details. ;-) There is also a "Chapel of Love" if you need a spot to get married; we did not use the space and I don't have any details about it. There is also a lovely park near by if you want some nice photographs. My husband and I had some taken there for our wedding and they turned out lovely (look for the 5 big trees that grew together as one, makes awesome shots). Street parking only. I recommend this place for anyone who would like a nice gathering on a budget and/ or for a more home style feel. How you decorate the place dictates how fancy or casual your event is. Pretty flexible to each person's needs and great service. And tomorrow... we'll be there again to celebrate my husband's cousin's wedding! read more

As someone already mentioned, if you're an ambiance freak, pass this one by. The décor is, how shall I say, church basement? Old church basement that is sometimes used as a basketball court? That's what I thought of when I saw the hardwood floor with the narrow planks. OK, the food. I started with the French onion soup with cheese. Excellent. Standard coleslaw and a very light rye, I believe. The beer battered cod was great, the potato pancakes very good, and HUGE. I would say it's not worth the couple of extra $$ for the all you can eat option. Best Walleye Fish Fry I have had hands down! The crispiness of the crust was great! I don't even like coleslaw but was encouraged to try it by a co-eater and actually liked it! The bar area is great although they seem to be saving money on heat! Dining room lacks ambiance and could use a new ceiling, but the waitresses are friendly and the service is very efficient. Atmosphere is what you make of it. if you are a fun person, it will be great!!!!!! from first look of the place/hall, it doesn't look like much, however imagination is key I was on a mission to find my one stop shop wedding venue..I did not want to have a ceremony at 1 then have my guests have nothing to do till dinner while we took picture .. this place was perfect for that, Chapel in the lower level and if it fills up they have a video feed that your guest can view in the hall and it was nice for guests that do not do stairs. No decorating necessary, unless you are a very nit picky person. My now husband does suggest that they consider a screen and projector for the hall if the chapel fills up. Nice hard wood floors and the main hall pretty much decorated. Once you add table cloths and center pieces....VERY pretty. Prices are reasonable and Jessie is a god send!!!!!!!!!! I truly loved everything. I read a few reviews and they said communication was bad...well keep in mind closed in Monday and their main business is a bar, open till 2 am...glad she never called after closing time:) Shout out to our bar tender Lisa!!!!! The absolute WORST food I ever ate. Ordered scallops. They were looked like tiny fried cheese curds!! No one prepares scallops like that. It was terrible. I threw it all out (we got the food to go). Never again. Maybe hire a chef that actually knows how to cook. read more

First of all, the food is great! Amazing fish fry with some of the best tartar sauce I've ever had. Service leaves a lot to be desired though. My boyfriend and I came in on a Friday night and were extremely disappointed with our service. Right away the waitress seemed bothered by having a table. Our drinks and food came out quickly and the food was great. But not once did the server ask us how everything was. She came by after we were clearly done eating to ask if we needed more fish. When we declined, she didn't clear our plates but walked away to get us the bill. The whole time we were eating she was sitting with her coworkers eating as well. I understand at the end of the night you sit down and eat, but when you still have a table you should still feign interest in the table. Not to mention, the other workers that were eating were not filtering their conversation at all for customers still in the dining room. Some of the inappropriate topics we overheard included serious drugs and sex. I'm a huge fan of this place and it's food. In the future I will not go later than 7pm because clearly the servers don't want to be bothered after that time of night. read more

Because we had some friends in town who were based nearby, we hit up this place two nights in a row recently. First up was Thursday night featuring 99-cent tacos. The price was outstanding and the tacos were great. They're just your basic seasoned ground beef tacos, which you can get with your choice of pretty much everything you would normally find on a basic taco (cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, black olives, sour cream, jalapenos, etc.). Beer prices were very good, too, but they don't really have any tappers other than Miller & Coors. There are a few decent bottled beers, but this is a no-frills, neighborhood bar, so a High Life in a plastic cup is an OK option. The second night was Friday for the fish fry. They were busy so maybe that's why I was underwhelmed. The fish was too thick with beer batter and was left in the fryer a bit too long. The potato pancakes were dry and overdone.
