Sunny day on a Sunday in Vancouver. The big yellow ball in the sky is hurting my eyes and is making my skin tingle. Pat's has been in existence for so long that time has forgotten its origin. As I entered the double-doors, build in a time when an airlock was necessary to keep out the cold, I wondered whether the staff at Pat's get tired of cooking the delightful and whimsical meals they are known for. I have these thoughts only because I have never eaten at Pat's before. No other restaurant in the Vancouver area makes simple brunch seem so full of the promise of sheer delight. The thrills are sometimes subtle, like the way one needs to order and pay before service, or the fact the experience is an unusual combination of cafeteria-style counter self-service and pub decor. I particularly enjoyed the discussion with our server about how the cook was refusing to cook one of the meals we had paid for - until the cook could confirm that we had, in fact, paid for it. Good thing we had our receipt, which the server borrowed to show the cook. This cook versus server drama was a crispy pleasurable bit of theater that makes a visit to Pat's a unique joy. Pat's is a restaurant/pub determined to stay true to its history, keeping its rich, dark interior full of those non-franchise pub elements that are becoming extinct everywhere else. The brick walls, deep brown and red wood panels and tables are an inviting cloak to Vancouverites who are repelled by the sun. For those others, there are a few window seats. And the view out of the window seats offer a great visual experience full of strangeness and otherworldliness not seen outside of East Hastings, or the Surrey Tent City. I recommend a window seat if you can get one. The Pat's deep repertory is refreshing for anyone who lives outside of East Hastings or Surrey Tent City and should not be missed. It may be seen by some as a risk but truth be told, we felt safe although a bit uncomfortable while walking outside. This sense of adventure, of course, is one source of Pat's enduring success. I do not hesitate to say it: today everyone should make their way to accept and take on this wonderful experience and be richer for it. The food at Pat's is out of place in a good way. Had the executive chef tossed in a sprig of parsley, the platting would have been comfortable in a Micheline Star restaurant, but not a real Michelin star restaurant. The food was a sense-stealer, with the eggs benedict shrouded by a creamy pool of sauce, not at all Hollandaise in appearance or colour, but deliriously tasty in any event. The hash browns soaked-up the egg yolks and, smothered in ketchup, thrilled the taste buds. The coffee was rich with a Starbucks depth of flavour. Although this is a largely self-serve place, our server brought refills frequently. Our server, who was also the cashier, was enjoyable and attentive despite his obvious conflict with the kitchen. I admit that I blinked my eyes a few times at entering Pat's, but why worry, experiences like this might not come again. A year from now the decrepit hotel in which Pat's is located, may well have made way for a new crop of condos made to look like they are built out of containers. Look how happy Andrew looks in the picture, everyone needs that.

Jeff, the gals and the folks, make this a great spot. I'd come back, maybe become a regular if I was local.

The time I brought my own Tabasco and Ketchup to Pats Pub. Thanks!

The real winner here is accompanying house made brews, their rotating speciality tap selection, and the daily programming including free jazz and blues performances through out the week.

Our server was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from start to finish. One of the coolest things about Steamworks is the history behind the brewery. The brewery was originally inspired by Gastown's famous steam clock and historically used steam power in its brewing operations. Even today, steam remains part of the brewing process, helping heat the brewing kettles and connecting the brewery to the neighborhood's industrial heritage. Of course, the beer is the star of the show. Fresh, flavorful, and brewed on-site, it's hard to beat enjoying a pint in the heart of Gastown. If it's your first visit, I highly recommend getting the 10-beer flight. It's a fun way to sample a wide range of their brews and find a few favorites without committing to a full pint. Whether you're a beer enthusiast or just looking for a great meal with excellent service, Steamworks is well worth a visit.

Our server suggested that, because it was happy hour, a pitcher would be cheaper and save us money. I specifically asked how many ounces the pitcher was and was told 32 oz, which sounded reasonable since we planned to get 15 oz beers. When the pitcher arrived, it was clearly 64 oz. The server apologized for the mistake, and I let it go, thinking we didn't have to drink it all. However, when the bill arrived, the price didn't match the quote. We were charged $25, not the $20 we were originally told when the 64-oz pitcher showed up, with the explanation that the regular price was $35 and that we had "saved" money. In the end, we were served twice the beer we wanted and paid twice what we intended, based on information that kept changing. Whether this was incompetence or intentional, it left me feeling frustrated and uncomfortable. The food and atmosphere really were great -- but the experience was overshadowed by feeling manipulated. Enjoy the food and beer, but pay close attention to what the wait staff tells you and what ends up on the bill.

Firstly when we arrived nobody greeted us for I would say about 10 minutes even though the place was quite empty when we arrived, and when we finally received a table we were seated at a table that was wobbly, and the menus we received were stained and sticky, which got me immediately on edge about hygiene and made me uncomfortable. For drinks selection - nothing special that you can't get anywhere else, and the place being quite empty the vibe was quite boring too. I just felt uncomfortable being there and there isn't anything special about this pub that you can't get better anywhere else. We finished the one drink that we got and headed elsewhere. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

This corner spot is neatly tucked away with a few outdoor seating spots, but the magic in itself is inside. The mix of vintage and old glam showcases the hybrid aesthetic. Perfectly described, The Ballyhoo definitely lives up to the over-the-top decor from their food offerings and styling. I managed to find myself arriving within happy hour and was super please I was able to bring my laptop out and get some work done without it causing anyone a fuss. The server I had was super friendly and she had all the tables she was handling in good spirit. After opting for a local draft beer and some bites, I kept over hearing how delicious the mozz sticks were. Now IDK how one levels up mozzarella sticks, but these truly were some of the best I've ever had. The dipping sauce was super spicy but bearable for anyone's heat preference and the breading and cheese inside had such a burst of flavor you wanted to simply inhale them. What had me in awe though was the cheese pull game. No need to fear about them being overdone not cooked enough, these babies were cooked to perfection with the cheese literally oozing out of each bite. I saw a few plates being served around and think this spot is definitely worth exploring.
