I had a great experience at the Paul Mitchell School in Lexington! I'm in town on business and after a week and a half trying to tame my growing locks with a hot iron, I decided it was time to cut some of the fluff off. Its getting warmer & I'm sick of my hair. Happens about every 3-4 months. I called to see if they had an apt today and was told 530p was open so I took it. Plenty of parking in the east to find Kroger strip mall. Check in was a breeze. I only waited about 5 minutes before Micah came over to guide me to a chair. She asked what I was looking for and we got started. A great shampoo and conditioner session. Then back to the chair. The instructors give advice, start the cut and then let the students take over with the instructions given. After a few turns cutting then getting a approval, we arrived at this very cute do! Please ladies save your hair and just go to a professional stylist. It's worth it to pay the extra 20-40 bucks for a licensed person who knows what they are doing. I went in with wanting a root smudge and some blonde added to my bangs only. I explained what I wanted and didn't want done. They have a leader who is supposed to come sign a paper and discuss what to do for the client. She told the student stylist doing my hair to do teasy lights. The student replied I've never done them before. FIRST RED FLAG. The leader proceeded to tell her to continue to bleach my hair with no further instructions on how to go about what I wanted done. She went to tone my hair after the bleach and told me while washing it that the blonde is going to be more "honey blonde" and she wanted to see me back in 8 weeks to rebleach it. She did a blow out on my hair and that was when I was mortified by what I was seeing. There was no root smudge done to my hair. It was an uneven dark root from the "teasy lights" and ORANGE HAIR. I was visibly upset and she asked if there was anything she could do. I explained there was no root smudge done and it looks so uneven and orange. It was as if the toner did nothing. She brought her leader to me who told me I could come back in the morning for the student stylist to do the root smudge and retone however I would have to pay for this fix. It was unbelievable that I was allowed to walk out of this place looking the way I did. It was so horrendous and embarrassing. I immediately went to sally beauty and toned my hair as well as did a root smudge. Please save yourself from the damage that these students will do to your hair. Maybe for a haircut but definitely not color and if you get color done maybe just a solid color since it's hard to mess that up. Their "leaders" do not teach them or guide them at all they are literally just there to sign a paper. Never again. I will post what was done to my hair and the after when I FIXED IT. read more

lol what a joke. It's hardly a school if the students aren't being supervised, being given hands-on instruction, and receiving feedback from experienced teachers. I didn't see or speak to an instructor for the 2 hours I was there for a cut. It's super loud in the building, not a good environment or experience. Not the hair cut I wanted even though I told her exactly what I was (and wasn't) looking for and why. I do believe the student did the best she could, but with the proper supervision she's paying for, it could have been amazing. read more

Came here to see a friend who was taking their class. This place is HUGE! Lots of students and teachers. They take you to the wash station and give you a nice wash/massage. Oddly enough, they were out of towels so my girl gave me a longer head massage- couldn't complain. Haha. Then she took me to her station and cut my hair. I do have to say that she took a lot longer than most of my usual haircuts, but her teacher checked everything, gave tips, made sure that I liked my cut and that was it! Apparently, there are groupons that you can get, but the prices were reasonable as it was. :) read more

My hairdresser took FOREVER for highlights....she was very slow! I wanted medium highlighting and got barely highlighting! My hair is now like straw and its breaking from the processing and i even take collagen and biotin. I wanted to give someone a shot at this and i am so disappointed that it came out so bad.......i still need highlighting and cant due to damage caused......i will not recommend this service unless you want to be disturbed and to think i paid to be unhappy and now have straw dry hair. read more

The teachers work well with their students and I enjoy listening to their instruction (learning myself). The students do great! It's a fun experience, always unique, and always so pleasant. They were offering FREE back to school hair cuts so I got 2/3 of my kids hair trimmed. They were quick despite how busy they were and the cosmetologist were really nice. My stylist did a nice job on my highlights but had no idea how to cut my hair (fairly straightforward layered cut). His instructor did the cut, which was excellent. The downside was that I was there for 5 hours. This was my second time going there - my first time was equally as long. I think they do a nice job and you can't beat the price but it's a painfully long time to sit in the chair. Both times my stylists were within weeks of graduation so I would've expected them to be a bit more efficient. read more

I've been going to Paul Mitchell the school for years. On this day I went to get a color retouch like I always do. I have one person I go to consistently until they graduate then I move to the next person. We were having a conversation about different things while she put my color on then I was to sit for 45 min. When it was time to wash it out another student came to me and said I'm going to be the one to rinse your hair out the other girl had a family emergency and had to leave. I'm thinking to myself that's really strange they normally come over and say they're leaving and another student is going to finish my hair. So as I walk to the washroom the girl says I'm going to get the shampoo and conditioner. I responded with I can't use your shampoo I have a condition that your shampoo causes my hair to be brittle and fall out. I have a special cleansing conditioner that I put in my hair before I go to help wash the color out and I said they could use some conditioner on my hair if you must use something else. Now. I've been doing this process for years since my diagnosis without any problems. When I said no to the shampoo the student went out and got the learning leader and she said that's what must be done. I responded with no it won't be and my paper says I just use conditioner to wash out she said no it doesn't says shampoo and conditioner. Well I k know what that sheet says on the back from what you sign because I always turn it over and look at the students names and color formula. So she's a liar she got really nasty with me the student was really nasty to me both saying it's the law and you're not complying. I said so I'm telling you this before you do something that puts me at risk and you don't care. The paper you sign says that you're signing that to release them from all liability. So if you can do that then I can protect myself and my health from you. So as getting my hair rinsed I had one learning teacher up against the sink the student then another learning teacher on the other side of the student standing back so I wouldn't see her. I felt very uncomfortable and threatened it was 3 against 1. I kept saying I'm just telling you what has been done for years then she spouted off and we need to also talk about your conversations. I'm like what! She said we've had problems with you in the past I'm like uh no and I'm not in school here and you will not tell me what and when I can speak about anything and you're having a bad day and all of you are bullying me. I'm the customer did you forget?? I was thinking of what I was going to do if I was attacked in some way and had my finger on 911. I should have called the police to walk me out of the building. Those people deserve a punishment for how I was treated and also they said we will have to review this incident with our 2 managers to see if you will be able to return so don't book her an appointment. I'm a customer you bully you will do no such thing I'm not having a code of conduct meeting with your managers I'm an adult and have other places that will take my business. This is ridiculous. So Do Not Go To This School in Boston shopping center especially during the night hours. I've never had a problem during the day and during the day those people are nice and enjoyable to be around. I was bullied and was scolded for a conversation that didn't include them. What happened to freedom of speech and your rights to refuse services. Not sure where to begin with my review for Paul Mitchell The School of Lexington but to say I will NEVER ever go to this place again. I have been going to this place for years. A few years ago I had a bad experience and stopped going for a while and thought I would give them another chance. Well let's just say I went a little over a week ago to get my hair done. High lights and low lights. I was there an entire 5 hours! The student turned my hair red and that is when the learning leader stepped in and decided to splotch light brown color all over my head. They did lighten my hair extremely. It didn't look too terrible but I asked to come back in and have it fixed to the picture I showed them. I thought they understood the assignment. I trusted that they would make it right. Once I sat up and got to look into the mirror my entire head was a very dark brown - almost black with a few sprigs of blond highlights to be all over my head. I had blonde hair and just wanted a root touch up with some lowlights. I am cool about things and if that was just the case but for some reason the student put blonde roots all over head and in some areas they weren't small roots either. I asked her why she did this and she said the learning leader told her to do this. WHAT? REALLY? I understand they are students BUT people are trusting that these students know enough to NOT make these kind of mistakes. I looked around the room and I saw two other people with some questionable coloring as well. They have messed my hair up way too many times over the years that I have been going to them. I am not one to make negative reviews but I want to let others know what to expect. I had my hair cut and colored. I wanted my hair below my shoulders and showed the student exactly what I wanted and it ended up being cut into a bob. I got layers and it's obviously a student doing your hair, which I understand that she was learning. I don't fault her much for this experience. She did not do a good job with the layers, again this was her first time and she was learning. I don't fault her. BUT 2 different "teachers" came by to help. I had to show them where there was pieces that were obviously longer than everything else. One teacher asked me what I thought of my hair when I was done. I answered honestly that it was not what I wanted at all. She stared at me and said nothing. The woman doing my hair was also very immature and unprofessional. Making comments like "jo mama" also my hair is now very very rough. The texture is awful and feels fried? And I didn't even get bleach in my hair. The products they use are awful or the person doing my hair just didn't do a good job. Overall the "teachers" there are not very good at their jobs. I don't fault the student, she was learning. I knew what I got myself into, but the teachers seemed just as bad as the student. DO NOT GO HERE FOR A HAIRCUT. They will botch your hair. I ended up fixing it myself. read more

I bought a Groupon for my daughter and I, for a full color, thought it was going to be a great deal, I added a cut. When I got there. They charged me an extra $22 for my color because they said they had to use extra product. Took 3 hours for a color and trim. My daughter is blond and was told they had to do her hair a different way besides just color. It took them 6 1/2 hours to do her hair, they were closing up on us and said they couldn't do the trim. I advised the instructor I had already paid because they were closing, and on top of her Groupon they charged an extra $72, they did not advise us of the extra charges until after I went to pay for the hair trims. So the instructor trimmed her hair. They had closed up already and a few staff was waiting on my daughter to get finished. The instructor apologized and said they should have advised up front about possible extra charges, but the lady that checked me out just said they had to cover their costs!! read more

My experiences at Paul Mitchell have always been hit or miss. I have come here for years. Today started off like a miss and my expectations were extremely low-my original stylist took the wrong person who coincidentally had the same name as me. After waiting 40 minutes after my original appointment time (it was morning might I add and there was hardly anyone there, it baffles me why the woman in charge of assigning people took so long to help me, but besides the point) Ashley Price was assigned to me and she absolutely made my day. She's a fantastic example of the service that I wish I had every single time I have visited Paul Mitchell in the past. She was kind, courteous, patient, and went out of her way to make my day better after having a less than ideal morning. She did an amazing job on my hair and added stars to my nails to help with my day and it made all the difference. She is the ONLY reason I am giving five stars, because her performance was exceptional and every student there could learn from her level of customer service. I will be back because Ashley made me feel welcome and gave me wonderful treatments. She took her time and made sure everything was perfect and I sincerely appreciated that. You're in great hands if you book with her and I hope everyone that decides to get their treatments here gets similar treatment by other students. I got extremely lucky! I've gotten my hair done at the school several times. Years ago, I got highlights and more recently I've done hair cuts. I really think it's great that they offer services for so cheap....but....if you value your time at all, it's not worth it. My highlights were 6 hours from start to finish, no kidding. The haircut was 1.5 hours. I got so anxious waiting for her to be done. I know they are students and I certainly would be nervous about cutting someone's hair too, but I found it painfully long. read more

I requested a phase 2 student because they are more experienced. To my horror I was placed with 2 phase 1 girls. The one girl was actually teaching the less experienced girl. I was just getting root color and a trim of my dead ends. 2 different people with different levels of experience were doing it. An ABSOLUTE nightmare. I was so concerned I called over the lady that placed me with the phase 1 girls. I said I requested phase 2. She didn't have much to say. At that point I should have NEVER let my hair be trimmed. The less experienced girl was the main one cutting my hair. She didn't know what she was doing. They were only supposed to take an inch off. It was uneven so I complained, and the more experienced girl stepped in. She took at least 2 more inches off. They ruined my hair. Not professional at all. I WILL never go here again. You get what you pay for. The girl at the front just laughed when I told her how dissatisfied I was. HORRIBLE PLACE. I paid $67.00 for my hair to be ruined by inexperienced students. The girls did tell me that they only had one time on the floor to cut/dye/style people. Wish I had known that before I went. I don't recommend this business. It's a big GAMBLE. She put a short layer in that looks horrible I didn't even ask for layers, I asked her to just frame my face a bit and did t even do that. I could tell by the instructors face when she saw it how messed up it was. She showed the girl how to make it less severe and she didn't even do that she just made it worse. I didn't even get showed the back just wanted to get out of there. Once I got a look at it and saw how messed up it was they won't give me a refund and want me to come in to have a student fix it!!!! For special occasions: such as my birthday or a big night out, I have my hair styled at Paul Mitchell The School. On my last birthday a level 2 student curled my long hair and styled it into a half up do. She did a much better job than I would have done at home. I also had a manicure, but the nail polish was old and thick. The student warned me about the nail polish, but I went ahead with it anyway. The manicure didn't include trimming cuticles and all of the other things you receive with a typical manicure, but because I saw a level 2 student it cost $10. It was not worth it and I wish that I had skipped the manicure. On another occasion last year a level 1 student curled my hair and French braided a small braid in the front. I was VERY impressed by what a great job she did. My hair looked even better than the picture that I brought in for an example. And the other great thing was that it only cost $12 for her to fix my hair! Every student that I have met at this school has been very friendly and done a great job. The School boasts a menu of diverse services that will not break your wallet. A true bargain for a beauty junkie such as myself. Instructors walk the floor, observing, and instructing students on the progress of the service they are providing. This adds a level of ease and confidence for the students as many are learning and perfecting their skills. As a client, this is reassuring as well. You mess up my wig- then we gon fight :) Major kudos and accolades to a Phase II student by the name of Cecily. She applies superb listening skills and unadulterated creativity to create chic and gorgeous hairstyles. She cut my shoulder length hair and transformed it into a glamourous pixie. I am very happy with the results-LOVE IT! I would recommend scheduling your appointment with a Phase II student, avoid peak hours on the weekend or your wait will be devastatingly long. My updo was great! A little lose but still I was super happy:) My friend on the other hand.......terrible. It tool 1 1/2 hours and it was the worst. The student kept asking her to pick out a hairstyle on Pinterest that had directions with it instead of the style that she wanted. So I made an appointment for a simple thermal. When I arrived, the lady at the front desk was very friendly which is refreshing going into a salon school. However, even with having an appointment, I still waited around 10- 15 minutes before a future professional stylist approached me. So I must agree with previous reviews from others that the wait time is a real issue. I did notice that there are a fair amount of children and adults receiving hair cuts here but very few elderly if any. Now, let's get to the part that matters... The quality of the service. My stylist, Amanda J., was quite wonderful. She was very meticulous about how she handled my hair. She also made sure I felt comfortable at every stage from washing my hair to the time I left which was much appreciated. While in the wash room, I noticed another stylist (Ruben) take great care of his client and her needs as well. If they ever take a course based on customer service, those two future professionals will definitely ace it! My hair looks and feels great (especially for the reasonable price I paid) and I'm happy that I made the decision to choose this salon school for my hair care needs. However, I would recommend a salon station and a dedicated chair in the washroom with an adjustable seat and/or sink to take care of any elderly needs. read more

I've been to The Paul Mitchell School numerous times over the past few years. The price is right, about $12.00 for a haircut. Now, I'm very particular about my hair, so anytime I walk into a salon, I'm hoping for the best. All I ask for is a trim of my ends and my bangs every three or so. Simple, right? Believe it or not, all the haircuts I've had here were perfect. The teacher always inspects the completed cut to insure it has been properly done, and I ask her to cut my bangs. I've requested the same individual several times, so there is less anticipation of the experience, although they seem to come and go. The big negative for me is that it takes at least two hours for the whole process, from wash to blow-dry. I always made an appointment, but still had to wait, adding to the time I have to be there, which is far too long for me. This is the only reason that I've stopped going to PM. read more

This review is from a customer's point of view. This is my go-to salon in Lexington. I've gotten my hair colored and cut numerous times here. Since this is a beauty school, prices are lower than regular salons. There are two levels of services, provided by students with different levels of experience, who are supervised by their teachers. My favorite part of the salon is the washroom. While you are getting your hair washed, you also get a scalp massage. Count on the soothing music and the delicious-smelling hair products to take your stress away. It always takes me a great deal of effort to not fall asleep in there. :P I especially appreciate that the fact that I can walk in if I didn't have a chance to make an appointment beforehand. This makes my life so much easier! In short, I highly recommend the services. Take a small leap of faith and you might just end up becoming a regular like me! read more

I can tell that they're teaching students how to sell Paul Mitchell more than they're teaching them to do hair. The owner and education leader are unlicensed. Their students are doing the best with the education that they are given but that doesn't say much because their education is limited. Do not go here to get your hair done or choose this as a school to teach you cosmetology. They don't care about their students or providing their clients with good quality work since they're students aren't trained. read more

I understand it's a learning experience so I was trying to be patient. but it took 6 hours for a cut and color, both of which I'm unhappy with and both look uneven. I went to get my hair lightened to in between a 6 and 7 N (light brown). The girl told me that the back of my hair was a little lighter than the front but it blended really well.. turns out I have bleach blond patches all over my head. Going somewhere else to get it fixed. read more

I have been a customer of Paul Mitchell's for 5 years. The quality of work from the phase 2 students is excellent. That is where "service" ends. Service from the "service" desk is pitiful. They have messed up my appointment times at least 5 times. It is an 80 mile round trip to Lexington. I have made appointment, only to arrive and have the say, they had no appointment scheduled for me. I make an appointment for a particular student and sometimes when I arrive they have put me with someone else. I usually call for an appointment because I have to find a sitter for my 94 year old mom who lives with us. I was given an appointment for today, May 19 at 9:30 am. The text I got yesterday to confirm I was coming said my appointment was at 12:30pm. NOT CORRECT. I tried to call the school ALL DAY yesterday and got recording they were busy. I also left a message for them to call me back but they did not. So I will not be keeping my appointment today and I may not go back. I am thoroughly disgusted. Peg Teachey read more

I had a cut and color and they did a great job. The pros: the cost is super cheap ($54 for a cut and color). The girl who did mine was ver professional and did a great job. The instructor came and inspected her work several times which added your confidence since it was a student. They did a great color and cut. Couldn't be happier! The cons: it does take a lot longer. Usually I plan for 2 hours for a cut and color (that's being a liberal allotment). I had a 12:30 appt. I didn't get in until 1:15. They had misplaced my paper. This did not bother me. They repeatedly apologized and gave me a complimentary conditioning treatment, which was nice. Things happen, no biggie. I didn't get done until 4:45, once I paid. Again, it wasn't a big deal to me, but just so you are aware. The students are slower in their technique and they have an instructor check everything. I will definitely be back!! read more

This is a patron review, so I can't comment on the actual "school" part of this business. This was my first visit. I was a walk-in around 1:00 on a Thursday. I was seen about 7-10 min after signing in. I had a woman who was about 9 mos into her 1-yr program. She was still ranked at the beginner level. (You are supposedly able to request lower or upper level students but I wasn't asked at sign-in which I wanted.) Not sure when students move up to the next level. It may not matter, as the teachers are circulating and checking in on people. It might've taken longer than the average cut, but they did a fine job. The tips must be cash and aren't built into bank/credit card billing. I think more advanced students ran about $20 and less advanced $15--for basic men's cut. I'll go back. read more

This place is a joke. I understand, yes, it is a school. Students are learning, but they should also be taught. I walked in for a trim. I wanted an inch or two taken off in length, but NOTHING else. I am from Louisville, and have been to their branch. It is wonderful and highly managed in order to allow good cuts. Here, my stylist seemed to listen well, but couldn't seem to cut well. She cut about three inches off of my already decently short hair, and somehow managed to give me side bangs... ON ONE SIDE OF MY HEAD! She never once called over a teacher to help or approve what she planned to do, and no teacher ever came over to check up on our consultation. She just walked away to the desk and got her paper initialed. Never once did she have a teacher touch my hair until I asked her to once I realized that she was just cutting and cutting. She ended up giving me bangs I did not ask for, which no instructor could or would fix. It does not fit my lifestyle, looks terrible, and doesn't seem to style in any way. It has been two weeks, the amount of time they told me to give the bangs to grow out some, and it just looks worse. On top of that, they didn't refund my cut. I will say that they offered to try to fix it the next day, but I will never let this "school" touch my head again, and even though it is a good name and price, I am BEGGING you not to let them touch yours.
