A woman instructor dressed like she is 18 yrs old, spent and hour laughing out loud with the 18 yr old students, while her male student was on his own cutting the worst hair cut he could ever do. I totally agree with Cheryl N. it is a school, and it took me about 2 hours to get my hair done. The girl that was helping me was Jessica, and she was decent. It was probably nerves, but in the beginning she kept forgetting what I wanted. All I wanted to do was cut my hair (which was about short length) into a bob, with edgy bangs and sides. I told her I wanted the back to be shorter than the front, but of course she forgot so now I have a one length cut. It's a really good cut for $10, plus I gave her a tip, which should have gone to the teachers that were helping her. tips: it's a good idea to make an appointment, and they dont start taking people in until 5:30. read more

I went for the first time today and I was very happy. It had been some time since my last haircut. I made an appointment via yelp. I called the next day just to confirm. The day of my appointment I received a text message reminding me of my appointment with I really liked. I arrived and was greeted with a smile and the staff was very friendly. I made my appointment with a level 2 student. I got Nancy. She asked a few questions about the type of cut I wanted, what products I used. Then I got my shampoo. It comes with a great massage. Once she started my cut Nancy was very good. She asked several questions before and during. All cuts are then reviewed and any thing that needs to be cleaned up is. Nancy did a great job he only did 2 small snips. I will definitely be coming back for trims. read more

On Saturday I had a basic 1 color appointment with Brianna H. I immediately was drawn to her professionalism and positive energy she exuded. I confessed to her that during the year ish COVID lockdown, I had experimented with Henna and Indigo. She explained to me how it stained my hair and also how sometimes hair color does not take if Henna is on your hair. I had no idea! She tried the developer on a few places of hair strands to make sure it took and that my hair didn't get more damaged. Thankfully, everything went well and Brianna H proceeded to color my whole head of hair back to it's natural color (and to cover the grey roots haha!) Brianna H. was easy to work with, we had a nice natural flow of conversation and when it came time to was the excess color out of my hair I was blown away that I got what felt like a professional head massage with tea tree oil products! I felt as if I had a day at the spa! The end results were AMAZING! I look like myself again - lesson learned to leave hair coloring to the skilled people-- I hope I can go back to her before she graduates! The only minus I have for the area not the school is that parking in that area is not great -- it's street parking on the day i went. I had to leave mid-way through my hair appt to move my car but they do such a good job at the school it's worth it! read more

The 1 star rating is my overall opinion and experience of the organization, quality of my service, the customer service I was given, and overall feeling that this Paul Mitchell school gave me. Also, if you park at the lot nearby, it's almost a $20 parking fee if you're staying for more than 3 hours for a color job. I used to live in Orange County, so I would frequent the PMS in Costa Mesa for everything. Haircuts, highlights, dying my hair blue, etc. I have always had consistent, AMAZING experiences there, from check-in to customer service, to quality of service and attention to detail. I know it is a bunch of students doing my hair, but over there, I felt professionalism and quality from beginning to end, for years. I recently moved to Los Angeles, so I thought to give PMS in Pasadena a chance. This review is based both on comparison to the quality in Paul Mitchell School in Costa Mesa, and just rating my overall experience here as a consumer. I made an appointment online for 10:15am and got a call from the school to reschedule it for a different day because "no one would be available that day I originally scheduled", which defeats the purpose of being able to make an appointment online. I told the girl that called that I wanted an ombré and a hair cut, and she told me "oh it's about 2-3 hours" and I am moved to a 6PM appointment. I figured, if 3 hours was the max, that I'd be there til about 9-9:30pm and that would work with my schedule. Mind you, this is the information i'm told. Check-in: I arrived 15 minutes earlier than my 6pm appointment and there were a lot of customers waiting in the front, i'm assuming both as walk-ins and appointments. The girl who works the front has a stank face and unfriendly attitude from the minute I first checked in. No smile, no friendliness, in fact she looked almost angry to be doing her job. I get it: long days make me angry too, but as someone who's worked in customer service, if you're the first thing a guest sees, seriously, don't treat them like you already hate them. I am sent to do paperwork and sit with a group of people until my name is called. One by one, the people around me get called up, and the people AFTER me get called up. It's 6:20 and everyone is seen but me. I finally go up back to the front desk girl and she barely acknowledges me with her same indifferent, annoyed face as if I was bothering her. NOT a great first welcome to the salon. Service: When I'm finally checked in, I show a picture of my hair to the girl (it's a silver ombre) and she doesn't flat out tell me that she can't do this within 3 hours. She beats around the bush, and as i'm getting my hair shampooed, she has her "Lead" come and make passive aggressive comments AROUND me as if I'm inconveniencing them for wanting a hairstyle that will take longer than 3 hours. She does a shitty job, it's nothing close to what I want, and then I am told to come back, where they will finish it, free of charge (except for buying the product) I come back the following Saturday, spend another 5 hours there, and my hair is nothing but an ashy gross blonde. I'm clearly dissatisfied with how it turned out, and still have to pay for the product. So not only did I waste 2 days of coming back to get my hair done: I have uglier hair than when I came in. Worst experience at this Paul Mitchell. I would rather drive back to Costa Mesa because I know if i'm unsatisfied, i won't get treated like shit. They also do hair much better. read more

I was there from 11-5, trying to get them to fix what they did at 12. I went in pretty open minded about what I wanted, but repeatedly said that I don't want bright or unnatural colors, as I have a job that it's not okay. I also said I didn't want to go dark. I got blood red streaks all through out my hair. I said they needed to fix it and they put a demi of a weird red-brown that looked mauve all over my hair. I was super upset so they said they were a neutral and blue brown over so the red would cancel out and it would just be a darker brown. My hair is now burgundy and way too dark for my skin color. The hair cut I asked for was not achieved. My bangs were left long, uneven and in my eyes. I had to keep asking for definition in my haircut and guide the student based on the picture I brought it. Still hair cut is terrible. And then, I had to pay for all of the messed up hair dyes. So I paid $65 for a hair dye and cut that I'm going to have to pay $100s to fix. Supposedly a manager is going to contact me, but I double it as every one I spoke to there was unapologetic. read more

This is a great place to get a haircut for an affordable price. I brought both of my daughter's and they did a good job on their hair. I suggest to make an appointment with a phase 2 student($17), they have the most experience and are students close to graduating. Phase 1($14) students are the new students with not too much or any experience, scary. I took my 11yr old first, she got a square shoulder length bob with long side bangs. She loved the experience and loved her hair. A few days later my 9yr old wanted a haircut, so I took her. We went on a Thursday and it was really busy. The girl my daughter got to cut her hair was a little lost. My daughter has really curly hair and most people never really know how to cut curly hair. I could tell she was a bit nervous, me too. This is the reason I rated it 4 stars. She took two hours to cut my daughter's hair. In the end the haircut wasn't exactly how we wanted it but it was ok. My daughter and I were so tired and hungry that we just wanted her to finish. Originally the haircut we wanted was round shoulder length cut and long layers. We got a little longer than shoulder length, no layers and the back was more square than round. read more

I have been using this service for more than 4 years. Students are very friendly, ask a lot of questions and check constantly to see if i am satisfied with their service. So far management (AKA) leaders all have been nothing but nice. On my last visit I decided to get a different cut and color. Both the student and leader checked with me to make sure I was ok with the new direction. I also received some tips and recommendations for future care and maintenance. The only downside is that sometimes it may take the student a little longer. I'm patient and don't mind but this also means that I have to really plan ahead. A regular cut has taken a little over an hour. read more

Great for color and hair treatments, since they use high quality products for a fraction of the price. Not the best for haircuts, unless you have too much time in your hands (they are still learning after all). Make sure you're never in a hurry to go somewhere right after. The head massage is always a plus, although last Saturday the girl who did my hair completely forgot about it and left a chunk of conditioner on my hair, like she actually blow-dried my hair with conditioner (along with other excessive hair spray prods). My very fine hair doesn't play well with excessive conditioner so went home and rewashed it. Now I'm also craving a head massage. I still recommend this place. I was in desperate need of a "trim" but really don't like my hair being cut. I made an appt with Christian. He patiently listened to my concerns and what I would like. It took a little longer than I had hoped, but knowing that he's a student, I was ok with that. Christian was kind, patient and paid attention to detail. Due to the dry ends of my hair, more needed to be cut than I wanted (I was given the choice before he began). Now my hair feels healthier, has a now flow and looks fantastic! Thank you to Christian and the staff that provided instruction when he requested it. They didn't pressure me to come back, but explained that a trim once a month would help keep the ends of my hair healthier. Why 4 not 5 stars? Because their was another student that hung around and talked about herself and all the experience she's had (not with hair) nearly the entire time I was in the chair. I've been to other school/training services and they could care less about the health level your hair is on and they will damage it more to the point it falls off. They care about you and your hair (and let me say, it's AWESOME). If you do plan on going in, call ahead of time and ask for Annie P. I've been coming here for a year and it's been great! I got tired of spending hundreds per haircut and color, so it was refreshing I only spent a fraction of the usual. Sydney, who is a phase 2 student, did a spectacular color job. We decided to experiment. The girl had patience of a saint b/c it took three hours to finish. (Sydney, you rock!) I recommended a friend to get her haircut here. They gave her a cut that made her look 10 years younger. I accept that this is a school and mistakes sometimes happen. But so do the pros. My experience as okay, It wasn't the best, tho, I do acknowledge that it is a school environment however I have been here 2 times before this appointment and the other 2 I'll give 5/5 I'm giving this one a 4/5 because I'm generous about the service that i got once I was here, but beforehand it took me literally 2 weeks to make an appointment, they said they got my request and they ghosted me until I wrote and gmail 3 days before my appointment which, I asked questions throught gmail to the guest services' leader Kristina Valdez, although she answered when my appointment was going to be, she never answer my questions about the hair treatment even thought she said that if I got any questions that I should give it ago, instead she completely ignored them, that's not how a guest's service leader is supposed to act, with a leader like that no wonder that department is a complete mess. Nevertheless , the students are really nice people, but this time they messed up my bleached hair color, I'm going to say is partly my fault too because when they were toning it I said that burned a little, I didn't get it how I wanted but I'm satisfied with what I got, it was generous of them to try to tone it how i wanted it again, unfortunately they weren't able to do so but I think I didn't give them much details. In conclusion don't put the full blame on students, you have to be very clear about what you want otherwise there is a more or less 50 percent chance that they mess it up. However I'm still grateful because I really don't want to pay +150 dollars anywhere else to bleach my hair, here they do it from 50 dollars depending on how long is your hair. read more

Oh man where to begin. I have been to two Paul Mitchell's before, and have had no problems. They were actually pleasant and did a fantastic job. After years, a friend told me about this great school she gets her hair done at and how they do such a great job. I decided to try out the Paul Mitchell closest to my house, the one in Pasadena. Honestly, Pasadena is a richer area, and I thought they would do such a great job. It has been nothing but a mess. First, I call to schedule my appointment. They, understandably are booked for the week and I make one for the next week. The day of my appointment, someone called and canceled, saying they were unavailable for appointments the day I scheduled and they were so sorry they needed to cancel. NOT reschedule, just cancel. When I rush to ask to reschedule on the receptionist who was trying to hang up if I could schedule a different day, she said oh, I guess. I scheduled for the following week. Two days later, I received several phone calls and voicemails canceling my appointment for that day due to a scheduling error. I call back and tell them I don't even have an appointment scheduled for that day and ask if my appointment the following week is still on the books. Of course, it is not. I ask if they could put me on the schedule for my requested day. It is already booked. They said they had appointments the next day, so I said ok. At this point, I hadn't even gone in yet and it was already 2 weeks of a nightmare. I finally arrive for my appointment. 20 minutes after my appointment time, I finally get in the chair to start my hair coloring. The teacher comes over and asks what I want. I told them that I needed lightening so I could have colored highlights. They said "Oh no, you don't need to lighten your hair, the color will be just fine on your natural hair color". I asked several times if they were sure the color would show up on my natural color and the teacher would not let the student lighten my hair. Seems that if I ask for it and would pay for it, they would do it, but I guess not. As predicted, 3 hours later, and it looks like the color they put in my hair was done a year ago. The student did a great job, and assured me that if I had lightened my hair it would have turned out. Keep in mind, I liked her and thought she had the potential of doing a great job. A second teacher comes over, appalled that they didn't lighten my hair even though I asked for it. She said they would do a re-do for free. I schedule the re-do for the next week. The day of my appointment, I have to call to confirm my appointment, since they had not. And they said oh, well you aren't in our system at the time of your appointment, but your stylist can still take you. So I make the drive to Pasadena, hunt for parking (DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE PARKING!). As soon as I sit down in the chair, and tell them what I want done to my hair, the teacher said, oh we have to be done by 1pm today so we don't have time to do what you want. EXCUSE ME? You, the teacher, scheduled my appointment. To fix, what you messed up to begin with. And now, at my appointment, you don't have time to do what we discussed? WOW. After 10 minutes of back and forth and assuring me I would have to reschedule and another 10 minutes waiting for the supposed manager to come, I decided to leave, no appointment rescheduled. After leaving, their sales manager called to apologize. Yes, I appreciate your apology. It is not just the hair service that you have interrupted and messed up for several weeks. It is also my time. I have the time to drive to your salon, find parking, my time inside your salon, as well as my wasted time having to drive back home. I understand it is a school, so not having a perfect final result can happen. But there is not an excuse for the flaws in your receptionist staff messing up on scheduleing several times. It is very wasteful and disrespectful of my time. Clearly I would not recomend this place nor visit agian. Even though I feel your students would do a great job, I feel that the burocrats clearly can't handle running this business. read more

I've been here once and m experience was so amazing I have to give them 5 stars. I am in Pasadena once a week with my busy schedule and I dropped in last minute to get some simple dutch braids. I had been looking so many other places close to me in Glendale but they would either charge $50-$100 and I would have to make appointments ahead of time. I waited no more than 5 minutes, the lady that helped me (Monica) was too nice and she was very professional and friendly and did an amazing job. She listened to what I wanted and did exactly what I asked for. Front desk was also so nice and accommodating. I will definitely have to try their other services here! It's funny. You come to a SCHOOL & expect a professional salon experience. They are STUDENTS, they are LEARNING. I've never heard of/met meaner people than the clientele that come to these schools. I've witnessed clients being complete BULLIES to students who are just simply TRYING & they just have to put up with it. I've seen clients who will make students cry & get anxious by rushing them, insulting them, going off on them for God knows what when in a real salon, the dynamic is completely different. Another thing, if you need to be somewhere by 5:30 don't come in at 4:30 EXPECTING it to be done b/c it's a haircut etc etc. everyone learns at a different pace. They are trying. Get off your high horse & go to a real salon if you expect to receive a haircut in under 10 minutes, a balayage in under 5 hours, etc etc. I appreciate how hard these students work to please us & try, I don't mind the time it takes b/c I know it will look good at the end b/c I'm not rushing them & making them nervous. So don't come to this school if you expect Paul Mitchell himself to work his magic on you. again, they are STUDENTS, they are LEARNING & they are TRYING their best & they do a damn good job. Also the teachers are very busy, they, by law, have to start consultations with students & sometimes students will be in a line waiting for that teacher. I'm just so tired of hearing people complain (for example) about their $45+ dollar balayage b/c it doesn't look like the $400+ balayage in the picture they brought (which is what they actually cost more or less). Most of these reviews are negative b/c people are more likely to share bad news, rather than good but I've only had good experiences w.these students, so give them a chance. Just this week, Lydia (Phase II) gave me one of the best haircuts I've ever had. Unfortunately she'll be gone in 5 weeks. Keep in mind this is a school so the results are going to be hit or miss. I've been coming here for a couple of years for haircuts and they average out to about a 3.5. But if you're on a budget, this place is great. (Any problems I've had were related to my layers not blending properly. Nothing I couldn't live with.) All my stylists have been professional, friendly and have always been thorough. I've found I get better results if I take in a photo of what I want. Pros: They can book last minute appointments, great prices, great hours. Cons: You won't always get a top-notch job, services can take a long time because students go slower, when you get a stylist you love, they're probably about to graduate so you can't re-book with them, Again, it's a school, so I'd hesitate to go in for a complicated color job or chemical process. But for straightforward services, they're great. read more

I had a deep conditioning, cut and style and was really pleased with my results. My stylist had a supervisor who assisted with the process to ensure the cut was up to par and I loved my blow out. I went into the experience with low expectations and was super happy with how my hair turned out. Knowing there was a supervisor/senior stylist on-hand to ensure my hair cut was being monitored put my mind at ease. So....this is the second time I have left relatively unhappy with a service. I was very surprised that the instructor did not correct the student to go by the picture with the color that was requested. I did speak up to the student afterwards about the color being a lot warmer than what was expected. And i don't believe it was an issue with time as i was at the salon from 12pm until 5pm for the service. I would love to get this remedied if possible but unsure how that would happen as i don't think the school will be open during the holiday week. If someone could get in touch with me, that would be very much appreciated. I gave a 2 (but if i could it would be more like a 2.5 or so) because the student and instructor were both very kind and the haircut itself turned out lovely. Ughhhh. My phase 2 hair colorist was fine. Didn't do a GREAT job and definitely wasn't supervised well, but she did...meh...OK. The thing that killed me was finding out they don't validate parking for the structure that is listed as their parking lot--and for the 4 hours it took to complete a VERY partial highlight parking came out to $17.40. $17.40! If there were street options I woulda taken them, but there weren't. Ughhhh. In addition to that whole situation, the school called me 2 hours before my appointment to tell me my "student" hadn't shown up yet for the day. They asked me to come an hour earlier to see someone else. When I get there they tell me my new student also didn't show up so there's nothing they can do. But after some complaining they "figured it out." Thankful for that, at least, but for the price ($60 before tip and parking) I will very gladly go elsewhere. Tried it out, wasn't for me. Best wishes to all the students there. They didn't seem to get much supervision so I hope they're getting their money's worth! read more
