I'm attending a wedding and seeing my family again for the first time in more than 5 years, so I needed a haircut so I could look nice. I wanted to try Studio K after my old stylist started charging too much, so I made an appointment with Josephine the other day. I arrived about 15 min early and there was no one at the front desk. There were a group of girls though, talking loudly at a round table in front of the salon. I stood awkwardly in front of the reception desk for about 5 min waiting for someone to come. After a while, one of the girls, who was gabbing loudly with two others, approached and asked if I've been helped yet. She worked here. And was apparently too busy talking to even acknowledge while I stood there. Luckily she did grab the receptionist and he did come after another few minutes. After a moment, another customer came in and had an appointment with another stylist, who was ANOTHER ONE OF THE THREE GIRLS that were just sitting there chatting. So two workers, just chit-chatting away, while there's a customer waiting right in front of them, looking for someone. I was absolutely appalled. While the stylist attended to her appointment with the customer, the other stylist, who grabbed the receptionist for me, and the other girl, were still talking loudly in front of the receptionist's desk where I was waiting, dancing and laughing. Now, I'm definitely not saying you can't have fun at work, but the level of professionalism at this place left a lot to be desired. After the initial bad impression, I met with Josephine a bit past the appointment time. Josephine, while thoughtful and attentive, unfortunately gave me one of the worst cuts I've gotten in my adult life. I had asked for some wispy bangs and a U-cut, but the bangs were cut too short, while the fringe/curtain bangs on the side, as well as the U-cut, were choppy and uneven. I could tell with how long she took to style my hair that she had messed up and tried her best to cover those mistakes with styling. And personally, I do think she did a fantastic job with it because I didn't notice until a day later just how bad everything had looked. With everything that I experienced at this salon: the lack of professionalism and customer service of the two hair stylists, the bad haircut, a dirty mirror, uncomfortable chairs, I can say with certainty that I will not be coming back. Even though my previous stylist charged a bit more than here (180 vs 144 including tip), at least I was treated like a valued client, got what I paid for, and didn't look like a hot mess. read more

I've been to this location twice and both times Josephine cut my hair. I didn't know anything about Josephine and had no prior experience with her. The first time she cut my hair , she stepped in because the girl who was helping me originally was too inexperienced to understand how to cut things. I can't remember exactly what the issue was but it had something to do with her having very little experience and not being confident with achieving what it was I wanted. Josephine stepped in at that time and I do remember being extremely happy with my haircut, which was a very layered long cut with longish bangs. She blow dried and styled my hair beautifully and I got a lot of volume out of that cut for a long time. That was a couple years ago and in the interim I went to Korea and got my hair done there, et cetera. Last month I finally decided to cut my hair again after almost a year of not cutting it and I went back to Josephine. My experience was more or less the same , and she was very accommodating even though apparently what I want is possibly not a very common request . I have very long hair and I like choppy layers and to have some layers to be quite short so that I can blow dry in a lot of volume. A credit card is required to reserve your appointment. Parking is available in their small structure, but can be hard to find on a busy day, street parking is available in the front of the store for 2 hrs max and there's also paid parking at the Del Mar station across the street. The salon itself was nice, loved the inviting atmosphere. The girls were super nice and I was greeted warmly when I walked in. Katherine took the time to listen to what I was looking for and gave me her expert advice as well, which I really appreciated. Loved our conversation and her enthusiasm with styling my hair! I've been coming to this hair salon for a few years already and usually get a good experience with Katherine but unfortunately she is off. I decided to give another hair stylist a try while she came back. I made an appointment and when I showed up the hairstylist that was supposed to cut my hair left but I was not contacted and there was zero communication. I was willing to get my hair cut by someone who "was finishing up" someone's hair cut but waited for 30 minutes only to be told that it would still be more waiting (only because I asked how much longer). It takes little effort to make your clients feel like they are cared for and I should have received a phone call prior to coming asking if I'd be willing to reschedule or if I was okay waiting for someone else. Prob won't be coming back bc this left a sour taste on my mouth.... There's too many hair salons around to deal with this. read more

As someone who does not normally go to the salon, I have to say I am so happy with my results & overall experience at this salon! I tend to go years between cuts, because i'm never really wowed by what I end up with. But today was a different and pleasing experience with Kaila! I was greeted as soon as I entered by their receptionist, Jennifer, who let me know that my stylist would be with me shortly (I was 10min early to my appointment). She offered me drinks and snacks while I waited, which was a nice perk! Once I was in the chair, Kaila was very thorough with her questions about what I was expecting from this haircut. This was the kind of attention to detail I had always been missing! I showed her a couple of photos and she explained to me how she would achieve those results, and questioned me on my styling habits so that she could give me a cut that would still be manageable to maintain for me. I'm almost afraid to write this review because my stylist Katherine is already booked months out in advance but I love this studio! Katherine has been working her magic on my hair and it's been amazing. What I love about Katherine is that she understands the science behind your hair. She colors it and knows how to keep your hair healthy. She also knows how to time your appointments to keep the brassiness out of your hair. She also has a signature haircut that is to die for. The layers are phenomenal! Since Katherine has been doing my hair, I get compliments on the regular. I could be a week away from having an appointment with her and people will still tell me my hair looks great. With all that said, I think all the stylists here are wonderful. I have naturally veerrrry dark brown hair (nearly black) but I have been getting blonde highlights in my hair for almost 10 years . On top of that, it had been almost 10 months since I got my hair colored or cut. (I'm new to the surrounding area and was having a hard time finding a salon - especially because I am picky ) During my consultation I let Katherine know I was ready to go primarily brunette and that I was ready for a cut with face-framing layers. I also shared a reference photo but let her know I trusted her to do what would look best on me. Saying Katherine delivered is an understatement! My hair has never looked better and I'm obsessed! Update: I am upgrading my review from 1 star to 4. The owner reached out to me promptly after receiving my constructive feedback to sincerely apologize and provided a full refund. Additionally, she offered to have a different stylist that I was assured could fix it correct the haircut. I declined, but appreciated the apology and refund. She loves her business and takes pride in it's reputation. As a consumer, I genuinely appreciate and respect that. They cut my hair way shorter than discussed (5 inches!)and it was uneven. I didn't get a shampoo. Instead of not charging me for it, they gave me a "complimentary" sample shampoo to take home. The whole thing costs $100. I was quoted a max cost of $97 prior to the appointment. read more

Update: I received the worst haircut of life when I went to my home country. After a few days of walking around with an uneven haircut, I decided to give Studio K a call for an appt for an emergency haircut. I had just came back from Asia and had to do a last minute booking. I've gotten my hair done by Lily before but she was unavailable. As this was an emergency, I was more than happy to have any stylist work on my hair. I was booked with Yuzu for same day service, which was great news. Yuzu was so nice and sweet. She asked if I wanted to have anything drink. She asked about my hair and I explained what happened. I showed her the original photo of what I wanted vs what I ended up getting and she immediately knew what to do. She explained to me what she was gonna do and she asked me questions to make sure I was comfortable with what I was getting. Overall, I had a great experience and I'm glad I waited to get back to the US to get my hair fixed. -------------------- This review is for Lily! I stumbled across this place and Lily for my balayage through yelp and so I thought I should share with everyone about my experience (that's why we Yelp to begin with)! She immediately responded and even helped me out with the consultation appointment. Consultation: She has such a great attitude, listened to everything I asked, I showed her some pics and she said we can do exactly what I wanted. Appointment: I was able to set up my appt online. They offer coffee, water, tea.. etc. She started on my hair and we had a great time sharing stories with each other. I think it's important to have a friendly relationship with the person doing your hair since you're gonna be sitting on their chair for hours. The appt took less than 3 hours and the results were fantastic. I will be back for my toning session. Parking could be tough at this place.
