It's always nice to save some money but you always make sure that you have plenty of time because it will take extra time for the student to work on your hair. Let me start by saying the entire faculty at this school should lose their jobs. These "educators" need to be investigated for fraud. Now, despite the poor management and all around scumminess of the staff, the service is not great either. I can tell the students would like to learn how to style and cut hair well, but the teachers they have on the floor seem to not only have no knowledge of the topic, they actively encourage poor work. First hand, I have seen students projects be cut short because the staff wants to go home early. I have seen students completely burn off someone's hair, and they were told they did accessional. I have even seen students doing administrative duties so that certain staff can have a long lunch. All of this is taking place while students try their best to teach themselves how to cut hair on your head; leaving them clueless and overwhelmed. DO NOT PAY FOR ANY SERVICE HERE! read more

Both the student who cut my hair and the teacher who supervised (and also cut my hair) were great. I brought in some photos of cuts that I liked and they both listened and played with my hair to determine texture and whether the cuts I liked would work with my hair before even sending me to get my hair washed. I enjoyed watching the interaction of the student and teacher. They were both trying to give me a great cut and to engage in important teaching/learning at the same time. The cut and style turned out really well. I think that this is the closest I've ever come to walking out with a cut that matched the photo. This is a school, so expect whatever service you are getting to take a long time. But it's very much worth it for the service and price. read more

Only gave this one star because of the nice hairdresser in training. I purchased a Groupon for color, and cut. Big mistake. The color was beyond terrible. I was told that the color that I was looking for, I could not use the groupon. My roots would not take the color I was hoping for. Funny, I have gotten my hair colored my whole life, and never was told that. I told them my hair pulls orange, red, when colored, and I did not want that. Again I have told other hairdressers this, and achieved a pretty color. The teacher told me they would do this, and that, (40 40 developer, some color, but it would not be blonde that I was looking for, not even light brown. Anyways came out carrot orange. He insisted this was the color on my hair, blah, blah. Rude...told me, him and the hairdresser were not seeing the color I saw. I might of said a few choice words, not of praise that's for sure. He did try putting in some ash color, and something to tone down the orange. It worked alittle. I also do have gray hair, and he told me the color would turn them blonde...I still have gray. Truth I feel bad for the girls training to become hairdressers. I sometimes think when you purchase a groupon, the amount of service seems to lack terribly, but no excuse for a very bad color job. I wish there was an option to choose no stars. I went in just asking for a simple cut and style. I asked to just cut off the dead ends, no more than 3 inches. The student that was doing my hair, apparently wasn't cutting straight so that took off a lot of hair from my end to straighten that out. Then for the "style" part, the blow-dry was SO BAD. Parts of my hair were still so curly and still wet. I understand this is a "school" and it's cheaper than salons. But, they should AT LEAST try to satisfy the customer. If you're looking for a cut or something to actually look cute DONT COME HERE. it's worth the extra money to go to a real salon. read more

My wife and I went to get our hair done with high expectations, but walked out extremely disappointed, after spending $170 and 6 long hours. I asked to get my hair dyed and cut, and the dye went completely wrong. My hair color is patchy and uneven. My wife asked for highlights with a base color, but walked away with patches of bleach and her original hair color. Definitely would NOT recommend this school to anyone. Students cutting hair. Not as scary as it seems. I've been several times and consistently get a good a cut. For buddha's sake though, spend the extra few bucks and get a phase two student for a mere $17! I did and my cut only took a little over an hour and looked awesome! They tend to be quicker and more confident than phase ones. There are also less students in phase two, so their instructor is more readily available. If you've never been, the student cutting your hair needs to be checked off by an instructor. This ensures any mistakes are corrected, but also means the wait is longer if the instructor is busy with many students at once. I've gotten cuts from phase one students in the past that have taken nearly three hours between their general inexperience and having to wait for an instructor. *You can pay with card, but can only tip in cash. read more

I received a cut from one of the girls that's been there since July 09 straight out of high school, so I was a bit skeptical. She took me to the wash, and gave me the best scalp massage that almost put me to sleep! I have very long, stick straight Asian hair and I'm very particular about how I want my hair to be cut. Most stylist just end up cutting the length because that is what they want, but my stylist being a student listened to me very carefully. Overall, she did a wonderful job, and her professional on-looker helped with any snips she missed. The price only being $12, with a great cut is well worth it. I came here with a groupon. While they did good work, this place tries to scam the unsuspecting. I got just the ends of my hair dyed a darker red and they tried to say I used 4 EXTRA bowls of dye at the end at $16 a pop. Um, no. It takes just two bowls to dye my entire head. When I brought this to the attention of the receptionist, she asked TJ (Arrogant jerk of a teacher, be warned), he then said that the 4 bowls were their mistake, but I did have to have my hair lightened first. I was so frustrated and said NO I did not, and if they didn't believe me then to ask the students that actually did the work. They were conveniently busy. My beloved hairdresser moved to Tucson **sobs in corner** This place is down the street from me and I needed a haircut and color soooo badly. I've been twice now and have had Becca (Rebeca) do my hair each time. She has done a fantastic job and my $55 hair cut and 2 color jobby gets just as many compliments as it did when I was going to my amazing stylist!! I asked for a trim to get some of my dead ends off and, I have curly hair so it's hard to cut, but I walked out with about 3 inches less than I would've liked. The student took her time and it was only 12$ but probably not the best place if you have curly hair. I purchased a Groupon for a hair color only for $15. The fine print on the Groupon says that it includes 3 oz of color. I have short fine hair. It is about 1 inch past my ear lobe. The hair dresser (student) went back twice because she said she did not have enough color. I did not realize this was costing me $8 a pop. I was not told this till I went to check out. I looked on the internet to see how much hair color would be needed for hair coloring. This is what I read: The amount of color used depends on hair length and density (number of hairs per square inch). Shoulder-length hair that is not overly thick will need approximately 8 ounces of color to saturate the hair. Again, I have short, fine hair. I feel like this is a big scam. My appointment was at 12:15, I did not get out of there till 2:50. It takes me one hour from start to finish to do it myself. The price is the ONLY good thing about this place. I spent five and a half hours there for what should have been an easy dye. I showed a picture of what exactly I wanted to my stylist and her learning leader. I can understand the student not being perfect but I think it is absolutely absurd the "professional" and "learning leader" Darlene completely failed to give me anything at all even closely resembling the picture of what I wanted. This is by far the saddest institute of higher learning I have ever stepped foot in. From the outdated interior, to the quiet music and depressed students and staff, this is not a place I would ever work at no matter how high the salary. I went in for an interview on Friday and have never felt more defeated, disrespected, and insulted by a potential employer in my life. I was told on the phone to be there at "10:00 or so" and to take my time. I arrived a few minutes after 10:00 with my model who just worked a 14 hour overnight shift in the E.R. I was scolded by Shirley for running behind and rushed to get started. That should have been my que to leave. However, I proceeded with my haircut and blowdry demonstration. Throughout the service my model noticed several glares and eye rolls from Shirley, as she watched at a close distance. Following my demo, I was brought into an office by Shirley and Linda. I was asked to take a seat and they gave me a small notebook to "take notes". They thanked me for coming in then immediately began to tell my everything I did terribly. I was told my cut was boring and unimpressive and I should have done an "edgy bob" despite my client asking for a conservative one length cut for her upcoming wedding, my class was "so boring students got up and walked away" (the only student who took off was due to lunch and apologized- every single student thanked and complimented me at the end), I am not qualified to be an instructor and need to go back behind the chair to finesse my skillset and learn how to do hair, and I don't have enough experience in general. They even listed everyone who worked there and the years of experience and credentials they had compared to mine. Apparently I am also disgusting for holding the blow dryer between my elbow and torso when I paused to answer a question from a student and told I "shoved it up my armpit". Several other insults continued for about 25 minutes until they told me I was not hired. My biggest regret was that I didn't walk out right away. I however felt backed into a corner, as the two of them were sitting by the exit. I am so disgusted and appalled by the level of disrespect I received from these ladies. They are not exemplary representations of the Paul Mitchell culture and I am horrified that students pay several thousands of dollars to receive an education at this school. I am more than qualified to instruct at any school as I have years of experience behind the chair, have received hands on training from celebrity stylists and colorists, have trained and certified in the world renowned Vidal Sassoon principles of cutting, taken more classes than I can count, and came with a glowing letter of recommendation from the Paul Mitchell** school I previously taught at. If you are considering pursuing a career in cosmetology, I urge you to please explore your other options. There are several other prestigious institutes in the Phoenix metropolitan area where I'm sure you will be treated more fairly and have a positive, uplifting, and inspiring experience. read more

I know this is a beauty school- but I have to say I expected a little better. I went in for a cut and color. Basically they gave me the color but then told me they didn't have time to do the cut??? Then why would you schedule me an appointment for it?? So I go to pay and it cost me 80 dollars! It would have cost me half as much anywhere else. The best part? They called me after I left to tell me I didn't pay for the service and to come back. Um no. 80$ came out of my bank account for your terrible service and I will never go back. read more

Stephanie is a phase 2 student, she is going to go far in this business!! She is very good and does a great job at cutting my hair and coloring it. Being lured by the opportunity of getting a decent haircut (and wash and blow dry!) for only $12, I took a chance and made an appointment. I was assigned to a girl, Tiffany who was graduating from her training in less than a month, so I felt comfortable immediately. I am not picky or high maintenance about my hair, and I felt like she wanted a lot of detail about EXACTLY how I wanted my hair cut, which I was having a hard time articulating. She was very friendly, very careful and attentive to detail, and checked in with me throughout the process so that there were no surprises and that we were on the same page (which I greatly appreciated. I thought the service was great, especially for the price, but my only qualm with this experience was the time.... I had only a wash, very simple cut, and simple blow dry and I was there 2 hours and 15 minutes... yikes! For someone like me, who spends little time on their hair, it was agonizing to sit for that long... however I am in full support of helping students train at their art, so I understand. So I've been here several times....it's really hard to beat a $12 haircut and since I normally get something simple like a 2 inch trim or a few layers I find myself here every few months. I came in about 5 weeks ago and had Anna (Anne?) who had super cool pink/purple streaks in her hair. She did a fantastic job and would go back to see her (and would have given 5 stars!) but this review is about her learning leader. I don't remember her leader's name, but she's a tall brunette with a lot of curly hair. She talked very condescendingly to me and at the end of the cut I told her I wanted some face framing....and since Anna hadn't learned how to do that yet, her learning leader did it. Anna curled my hair so I didnt notice it until I washed and dried my hair at home. There was ZERO face framing. The leader simply took a pair of scissors to the middle of my neck line and cut perpendicular across my hair. It looks so stupid whenever I straighten it and multiple people have commented on what I did to my hair. So its been about 5 weeks and its BARELY started to grow out. So the lesson here is that the learning leaders don't always know what they're doing. read more
