Finding a photographer was on my "honey do" list and I think it's one of the most important parts of a wedding. You can't recreate those moments and I wanted ours to be timeless and classic. His style was exactly what we were looking for. Things to know: Paul is not someone who you can order around and is on "your clock", he meets you both, if you "click", and each of you are in it to win it, then you're golden. When we met, I knew he loved what he did and he is emotionally involved with life, love and his work. It shows and it's why I adore him. If you can't let control go and you have to give direction every step of the way? Move on. He is not your guy. But if you get let go and let him do what he does best, then what you get is a phenomenally intense guy who will give you phenomenally wonderful pictures that you'll stare at constantly. How can it be that Paul has not been reviewed here? I'm surprised but really honored to be the first one. Where to even begin? Well, last year I began to plan a wedding and the first thing I did was look for a photographer. To me the pictures are what you will always have. My own parents trusted a drunk relative to get their pictures and, as a result, no pictures. 53 years of marriage and no damn pictures to look back over. So, needless to say, this was big for me. To my shock I fould two camps of photographers - those who were really good and charged $3,000+, and those who were awful and charged $2,000+. My heart sank. There is a difference between good photography and bad. YES, you can say "that is a good shot" or "that isn't a good shot" - it is not always a matter of opinion. On top of the fee for the services all the photographers charged for each print. I find this crazy as they are no longer in the dark room developing film. I was not going to pay for every picture I wanted; build that into your pricing. After I pay $4,500 for one day of work I am not buying the images of myself. And it IS ONE DAY OF WORK. I've heard the arguments from photographers as they try to justify their prices and they don't change my mind at all. So, anyway, I go to the last place on earth one might expect to find a professional gem - Craigslist. Guess what? I believe I found the single greatest wedding photographer in the Boston area. Hand's down. Paul Robert's CL posting really spoke to me and when I went to his website I got chills as he was exactly what I was looking for - beyond talented, reasonably priced (verging on too inexpensive and he should raise his rates), you retain the right to copy any image he takes, and he is one of the most professional people I have ever worked with. He seemed too-good-to-be-true. I was waiting for the "issue" to be made obvious but he really is as amazing as he seems. At the end of the wedding EVERYONE asked who he was and where I found him because he made such a positive impression. My husband, who is Mr. Cranky Pants said, "I have hope for the future when I meet people like Paul." Oh, and the pictures he took? For the rest of my life my husband and I will cherish them. Paul captured some images of our dogs and our nieces that stop time. He captured their essence, perfectly. And I'm sure Paul sat through the class in photography school where they said, "On your website make sure you use the word "Investment" when you discuss your pricing so that you can justify the astronomical amout of money you are about to charge", but he doesn't do that. His just says "pricing". Bam, simple, down-to-earth. If you need a photographer for your wedding DO NOT pass this guy up just because he doesn't have a ton of reviews on Yelp or any of the bridal sites (which, incidentally, make me want to jump in front of a train). If you want beautifully artistic shots that capture the moment in time and you aren't into formulaic "bridesmaids pose like groomsmen and groomsmen pose like bridesmaids" crap you see all over Pinterest, you have to contact Paul - he is a total find. A word to the wise for future brides.... Don't completely eschew the "traditions" of wedding photography. I didn't ask for specific shots and I should have. When I got my photos back I instantly wanted more - my mom and I, my dad and I walking down the aisle, my nieces in their dresses. Paul did such an amazing job that I wanted pictures of everything. So, make a list of every shot you absolutely have to have at the end of the day. When you see what you get back from Paul you will be amazed. read more

Paul is not a wedding photographer. He is a photo journalist who chooses to document weddings. The way his narrative unfolds through photographs is breathtaking. From the beginning, Paul was adamant that we build a relationship with him. He explained that he wanted to be like a friend hanging out on our wedding day, not some stranger sticking a camera in our faces. It totally worked. Over the course of a year, we met for engagement photos, talked about our visions for the day via phone and email, and even met up for dinner a month before the wedding. Building this relationship was a large part of why we look so comfortable in our photos. In a word, the photos are: stunning. We honestly couldn't be any happier with them. You don't need me to wax endlessly about them- go to his website and blog, check them out! You'll see :) Now, please be aware, there is a catch: just because you are paying Paul does NOT mean he works for you. Failing to understand this point is the only way you could end up frustrated. Go to Paul's website. Look at his portfolio, read his blog. His work has a definite style: he does some formal bridal party photos, but the majority of his shots are these beautiful candids that wordlessly capture the emotions and experiences of the day. He is a professional who is serious about maintaining the integrity and consistency of his work. If you want a bunch of Pinterest- style posed, cheesy photos (the bridal party holding up mustaches! Photos of us in empty picture frames!) this is NOT the photographer for you!!! There's nothing wrong with those ideas- there's a reason they're so popular. But it's not Paul's style, and you shouldn't expect him to move into an area that he's uncomfortable with. Just be frank and honest during your initial meeting with him to make sure you're both on the same page. If you're not.... you're not. Don't force it. Last, but not least: trust him. Paul has been to way more weddings than you and he knows what works. I thought I wanted bridal party formals after the ceremony, but Paul insisted we do them before. Andddd after the ceremony it was getting dark, the receiving line took forever, the train of my dress was muddy, my shoes were covered in mud, and the bridesmaids had wandered off somewhere to warm up. Basically, he was 100% right to recommend doing the formals before the ceremony and I'm super glad I trusted his judgement. In a totally non-traditional wedding vendor move, Paul's prices are transparent and reasonable. He posts his rates on his site (just under $2,000) and doesn't try to BS you by calling it "investments." I hate it when vendors do that. Importantly, you and your friends and family have full photo rights. You can download the high-res, no watermark files yourself or order prints through his website. Paul is amazing. For me, initially, finding a photographer started out as one of the most stressful parts of wedding planning... I encountered some outrageous quotes, cheesy portfolios, and overly restrictive policies around rights/access to high quality photos. I was pretty discouraged, until we found Paul! Oh my god, am I glad we found Paul! When our wedding day came around, our photos were one of the things I was totally, utterly, completely *not* worried about - I knew we were in good hands. This is party because we'd been so happy with our engagement photos - this is something we wouldn't have gotten on our own, but it was included in Paul's package, and it was SUCH a good idea. It allowed us to spend time with him, get to know each other and get comfortable with each other, and allowed us to get to know his style a bit better. The other reason we were so happy with Paul is that our styles and approaches jived so well. We didn't want to spend hours taking slight variations on formal portraits, we wanted to just enjoy our day and have that captured, and Paul made that happen. Honestly, he kept us on track- he checked in when needed but was never demanding, and was both extremely professional and really fun to work with. I should also note that he was very responsive throughout the whole process - many people who work with weddings seem to be (for good reason) very busy, and in our experience, many of them seem to have trouble keeping up with emails, phone calls, deadlines, etc. Not Paul. He was always responsive, available, and transparent. Again - it was just so nice to have at least one aspect of the whole wedding process that I felt totally confident and comfortable with. Our big event was a destination wedding on the Cape; we actually chose our wedding date based on Paul's availability. After the fact, my wife and I both agree that this was the right decision. As far as talent goes, the pictures speak for themselves. He has a huge respect for lighting and composition, resulting in a very modern classic look. The examples on the website aren't just rare highlights; all of our pictures were this amazing. His process was perfect for us too. Standing around taking pictures with everybody gets old. We did do some photos with immediate family and the wedding party, but it was short and sweet. He truly captured the feelings and moments of the wedding to create a very accurate narrative. He made us all feel so comfortable (which is quite a task since we don't usually like cameras) He allowed us to be ourselves, have fun, and also take risks. We captured shots we never dreamed of and felt like models the whole time! He saw things in us and our venue that had never crossed our minds. We are SO happy with the photos and are having trouble deciding which ones we want printed because there are so many to choose from. I was young and in love. In my blindness, I turned to Craiglist for wedding vendors, and Paul was easily the best decision my (now) wife and I made throughout the whole planning process. We both selected ten photographers, and Paul was not only the single consistency in our lists, but he was also both our number ones. His stylistic approach to both composition as well as editing instantly drew us. We opted against a wedding videographer, as we felt it cheapened some of the memories. What we asked Paul to do was thus that more significant, as it was the primary record. The work Paul put out was sterling; and if the work didn't speak for itself, he was instantly on the same page as us. He requested our "must haves" and kept the scripting to a minimum, and instead focused on catching moments as they occurred around us. I have been to weddings both as a guest and a groomsmen in which the photographers have been herders more than photographers, and Paul was the absolute antithesis. He left us to enjoy our day, and the portfolio not only tells a cohesive story of our day, but also has probably the best images in existence of at least 15 individuals. If that wasn't enough, working with Paul was an absolute blast. I don't take things very seriously, and without pressure he managed to get fabulous images out of me. And when our cake vendor inexplicably remembered that our wedding, which she had booked six months in advance, was the same week as her wedding and cancelled on us three weeks before the date (how the hell does that happen?!), Paul wasn't just our photographer anymore. Paul set up a meeting with a local baker, and got us the most delicious wedding cake I have ever had. On three weeks notice. Paul also attended a meeting with our venue and wedding planner just to get a lay of the land. We didn't pay him to do that - though we did give him muffins. All in all, having Paul at our wedding was an absolute blast. Reflecting on the whole experience, I would have invited him as a guest without the camera if I had met him a year earlier; then subsequently asked for his recommendation for a qualified photographer. When I first started to look for a photographer for our wedding I found Paul's work on Craiglist. I felt like I needed to keep looking at my options, but I always came back to Paul's website and his work. I felt so drawn to his photographs, his style, and the way he wrote about his approach and his work. I should have just gone with my first instinct and booked him, and I was so relieved that he still had our date available when I contacted him. What can I say about Paul? He is an artist, he is extremely professional, he works HARD...so many people commented both on how personable Paul was but also on how hard he worked. He seemed to be EVERYWHERE at once, while never seeming intrusive. I don't know how to explain his work other than his photos are full of emotion, they're beautiful, artistic...I could go on and on. Paul's photos make you feel things. He captured our wedding in a way that we feel we can truly relive the day. I can remember exactly how I felt in certain pictures. And as a bonus, he took pictures of THINGS are our venue that we can frame, that looks like high end art...so its not like we have to have pictures of our wedding formals all over the house...we can have a piece of art, Paul's photo, on our wall and know it is from our wedding day without it being a wedding photo. If its even possible I love our photos more and more each time I look at them, and I find more and more nuance within the photos where I can't believe what he captured. This dude is the best. Paul truly is as good as it gets. My husband and I recently hired him to capture our wedding, and literally could not be any happier with his work. When we began planning our wedding, in an effort to keep costs low, we turned to Craigslist to find vendors. After connecting with a handful of photographers whose pricing fell within our budget, we came across Paul. Unlike other vendors- who all do good work at a good price- Paul was the first photographer who talked to us like a friend. He truly went above and beyond by getting to know us before this wedding. This not only made us more comfortable around the camera, but also led to the most beautiful, romantic, genuine, raw, authentic wedding photos I have ever seen. Paul is a true artist who captures not only the traditional wedding moments (vows, formals, etc) but also the moments that truly capture the spirit of the day; moment's that I did not witness first hand on the day of my wedding, but am now able to get a glimpse into and really see how much our loved ones enjoyed our wedding day, and all of the emotions that went along with it. I'll start this review by saying that you're not going to find a photographer better than Paul Berman - not in the shots he takes, not in his price, and not in the service you get from him. My husband and I decided to hire Paul after seeing the work that he did at a friend's wedding and we couldn't be happier. He's a great guy and super easy to work with. Right from our initial inquiry, Paul always responded to emails within hours, sometimes even minutes. His fees are upfront and all inclusive, and when I say ridiculously reasonable, that's an understatement. This is especially true considering that he gives you the rights to all the photos he takes of your event - so the price he quoted us at the beginning included the upwards of 700 photos he shot at our wedding that are all mine. He sends them to you digitally (I got mine within 48 hours of the wedding - with applicable editing and all!) Our photos are gorgeous - I love showing them to family and friends. Some of them are traditional shots of family, etc., but I had a couple of unusual requests for pictures that Paul also fulfilled perfectly. For example, rather than do traditional shots with our wedding party, I had asked him to just do a candid session of us all hanging out before the wedding. And to be honest, I think those are my favorite photos of all - he's got a knack for capturing the moment in just the way you always want to remember it. He got some great shots of my dog (she was in the wedding) and the kids who were there, which I imagine is especially difficult considering their tendency not to stay still! He was also extraordinarily accommodating . I asked a lot of questions along the way and made some atypical requests, and never once did he fail to help me out. I also called him a couple of weeks before the wedding to ask him to change the start and end times for which we had hired him, and he was totally open to it. It also doesn't hurt that he's a really cool, interesting and personable guy. All in all, at a time when I feel that many wedding vendors are taking advantage of and/or nickel and dime-ing you to death, Paul was a breath of fresh air and he's an expert at his craft. I would highly recommend him and plan on utilizing him every time we need a photographer. I can't say enough good things! read more

Paul is far from your standard, run of the mill wedding photographer. He's a storyteller. He loves love. We planned our wedding from Chicago so we were totally going to bypass the engagement session that came as part of our package. However, Paul convinced us that we should at least get a few shots so we could feel comfortable in front of the camera. One weekend when we were in town, we grabbed coffee with Paul and took some shots. He was 100% accurate - we needed that session to get our awkwardness out of the way. With all weddings, the day of can get a little crazy and overwhelming at times. As a bride, you're pulled in a thousand different directions and it was always a sense of relief when Paul would pull us aside to take us to a secluded spot for some photos. Aside from these moments, I barely remember seeing Paul so I was worried we didn't get enough photos. Needless to say, we had PLENTY of photos. Paul suggested we view the photos in sequential order, and once again, he was right. It told a story and accurately depicted the emotional rollercoaster of the day. While viewing our photos, we cried and laughed at all the same times as we had on our wedding day. We are so happy that we have these photos to look back on forever. read more

When I first started looking for a photographer for our wedding....i really didn't know where to begin. I was hunting around the interwebs to find something that inspired & intrigued me and I wasn't finding that -- what I was finding was only cliche poses and the standard formals, nothing truly classic and timeless. So I took a break. I started looking for a officiant for our wedding and happened for fall on a website (wish I remembered her name...) and I saw a photo of a couple getting married. The style, the moment, the lighting -- it was amazing! I needed to look into this photographer!! Luckily the officiant had listed Paul's name under the photo (because he doesn't use a watermark on his photos) and I instantly looked him up on the internet and fell in love with his style. His way of capturing the day is beyond words.... its so simple, but so thought provoking. I love the comment that Meg K. said that Paul is "not a wedding photographer. He is a photo journalist who choose to document weddings" -- that sums him up in a sentence! Paul was exactly what we needed -- I really didn't want to think about poses or layouts for the day, I just wanted it to happen and unfold naturally. He captured the day perfectly and every time I look through the hundreds of photos that he took (yes, we've only been married for about a month and I probably look at the photos every day!) , I just relive the moments again and again, its just perfect!. The wedding day was amazing. He floated around the ceremony and reception -- I hardly ever saw him, but he was right there to capture the perfect moments. Paul was right there to guide us through the way and great person to work with on our wedding day. He had a great sense of humor, and very supportive of our vision of the day. And the engagement session we had with his was amazing. It was about a year before our wedding - on a perfect fall day. Oh man - where to start. Paul is amazing. We hired Paul for our February wedding probably about 6 months out. I found Paul via craigslist, as many others have, and was so happy that I put in the time to do so. While always the case with craigslist, you have to "kiss many frogs" before you find what you're looking for, but boy did we ever. Paul and I talked for probably an hour the first time we spoke. It was completely natural, and within minutes of hearing his view on photography, weddings, and life in general, I knew it was a done deal. I appreciate the fact that Paul really takes the time to make sure it's a good fit for both sides, he's not one that will automatically take on a wedding just for the money, which makes him all the more genuine, and rare. We got dinner a few times before and had the engagement shoot, and with each time we interacted both sides got more and more excited for the big day. Paul communicates well and often, and answers any questions you have. However, he also has a way of calming you down and making you know it will all be okay, which helped us to become friends rather than business partners. And then the wedding day came. Paul was flawless. He has an instant calming effect no matter what room he is in. The getting ready process was smooth as could be. He is efficient, organized, and best of all, personable. He was able to interact with everyone involved in the wedding party and get to know everyone, while at the same time, being almost invisible and getting shots that I didn't even know he was taking. How is that possible? I'm not quite sure. Magician I tell you. Our first look and formals were also wonderful. I'm sure it can be hard to manage so many family members, on top of a videographer, but Paul orchestrated everything beautifully, and with grace. The rest of the day/night (ceremony, reception, etc) carried on exactly this way. At times it almost felt like Paul was our wedding planner. He just knows where to be and what to say every step of the way, and he never ever does it in a stressful way. If anything we were most relaxed on our wedding day than we had been in months, and I can attribute a lot of that to Paul, since he was basically our right hand man all day! And then literally two days later Paul texted and said, "Your pictures are done!" We had more images than we ever could imagine, and they were all perfect. Someone else had mentioned on here that the pictures you receive are WORTH hanging in your apartment and showing off because they don't scream, "WE JUST GOT MARRIED AND HERE ARE ALL THE PICTURES!" Instead, you have a more journalistic approach to a beautiful day, captured in such raw beauty that you literally cry when you look at them. And trust me, I can't stop looking at them. No cheesy, saturated, cringe worthy photos here folks. They are works of art. I am proud to show these and share them with our kids someday. We know Paul's work would be fantastic and that is worth everything. But even more than that, we're so happy that we got lucky enough to hire someone who is solid to the core.
