Dr. Justin Ilsley has been my PCP for at least 12, maybe 14 years, and I feel genuinely lucky that I found this place so many years ago. Having a naturopath as a PCP works beautifully for me; they treat the whole body, can call in prescriptions if appropriate and if something falls outside their scope I see a specialist. That said, MHC offers a remarkable range of services in-house: naturopathy, acupuncture, herbal therapies, bodywork treatments (focused massage, cupping, kinesiotape), IV treatments (chelation and vitamin supplements), and on-site blood draws for labs. And that's only about half of what they offer. It took me a long time to come around to acupuncture, but I'm a believer now. It's subtle, it treats the whole body, and it may take a couple of visits, but at the very least, you'll leave the calm, peaceful session feeling deeply relaxed and genuinely cared for. More often than not, whatever was bothering you has quietly resolved itself. Of course there's no pressure if that's not your kind of thing. If you're someone who's serious about a holistic approach to your health and not just masking symptoms with a pill, this place is a wonderful fit. It doesn't feel like a cold, clinical doctor's office. You feel like you are entering a warm, supportive, caring, natural environment when you walk through the doors. They take the time to get to know you and understand what's happening in your life, and offer treatments that reflect that. I also really like that they are invested in the community and getting to know their neighbors by occasionally offering fun workshops. Dr. Sarah Jones is a newer addition to the team and every bit as knowledgeable and nurturing as Justin and Beth. And while I haven't worked directly with Beth, I've heard nothing but high praise from the community for her talents and specialized offerings. I had to beg and wait in tears for crutches or a walker when the disk in my back became extremely swollen impacting my entire body causing extreme cramping, loosing feeling in my legs and severe knee and hip pain. I lost full motion of my joint between my leg and my pelvis. Terrible Terrible pain. I had to scoot around the house using a box. Nothing worked! Then when I had my needs neglected at Legacy in N Portland; I was forced to walk around no car in all with a foreign sharp object lodged 1 inch deep in my foot of which no one could find including a Legacy foot specialist. I limped to the store, to my child's school, to the park, and everywhere else. I had to beg for a prescription of pain killers which was not given by Legacy until I seen the specialist days later with the object still in my foot. I prefer herbal remedies over prescriptions, but I still needed the prescription. I spent the entire day calling around trying to advocate for myself the following day after being released from the emergency room. When I called I explained everything to Mississippi Health. Mind you I was never given the option to speak or arrange a time to consult my physician. Instead, I was told right off the back after explaining the horrible experience with legacy that a referral to outpatient surgery "is out of Mississippi Health Center's jurisdiction". I told them the physical in the emergency department required that I follow up with my primary. Mind you Legacy never reviewed my contacts or demographics with me. Legacy never sent over my treatment information either, which I explained. I was given podiatrist options to call and make appointments with without a referral. I ended up waiting 4 days to get the foreign object removed which was very risky and dangerous. Legacy had lied about issuing crutched to me as well. I informed Mississippi about this as well. I was told by Mississippi health that I would get call back. I did not get a call back but ended up calling and told them that they were cruel for not helping me. I was sad! They hung up on me. So its easy to tone police a person of color who is tired, scared, and desperate for services. This is a common form of micro aggression that is normalized and more than often excused. I ended up getting surgery at a different hospital after doing everything on my own. The post op appointment with Legacy consisted of a Podiatrist assistant looking at my foot for a quick minute, changing the dressing after I asked him to, then telling me the appointment was done without the Podiatrist(the expert) coming in to complete the examination and answer questions. To make matters worse, I was sent paperwork to find another provider by Mississippi Health. Even though I have already requested assistance with finding a new provider twice in the last year or so including the following day after my most recent emergency room visit. *** If you are a person of color be aware.*** I was also sent pre-surgery paperwork from legacy requesting a signature that several staff witnessed me signing. I have a picture of one (legacy does not know that I took a picture). They confiscated my form that listed my refusal to consent to vaccinations through biologics which they can place in IV's. Moving forward: I did not know that my younger sister use to be a member of Mississippi until she told me. She said she had been misdiagnosed for years until she switched providers. She lives in another state now. I spent years receiving guesstimates about conditions and had to beg for testing after doing online research and speaking with others regarding conditions. Had I not known the test names, I would not have been offered them. Medical discrimination is hardwired in policy, testing, and procedure and for this reason health care disparities exist across the board. The whole experience has been a gaslight for simple obvious needs that no one regardless of who they are or what color of skin they have should have to beg for. I am well informed and conscious about my health and I myself have worked with vulnerable populations for over 20 years serving the community so I am not anything close to how I have been treated.

Dr. Khemlani met me for my first appointment, accommodating a scheduling conflict to make sure I was seen in a timely fashion. Dr. Kehmlani went to bat for me with my insurance to ensure I got an approved prior authorization. He truly had to go the extra mile. Further, the next day I was seen for the actual procedure. I was honestly terrified. He took the time to stop and speak calmly with me, reassuring me all would be fine. He took time. He showed compassion. He was above-and-beyond professional... but more importantly, he was kind. Providers like Dr. Khemlani are FEW are FAR BETWEEN. Providers that truly express empathy and grace are a rare find any more and I'm quite lucky to have been referred to him. Even better, he has a ridiculously good sense of humor and made the rather unpleasant procedure 100% tolerable... painless one would say. I can't speak highly enough of Columbia Pain Management and Dr. Khemlani. He and his staff were all spectacular and I appreciate everyone for their great care. After seeing my primary care dr., she recommended that I see a DO, someone more specialized and with more knowledge and guidance than what she's been able to help with the last few years. After letting my primary care dr. gynecologist, and my outpatient care dr. know what the next move was, they were all on board. My primary care dr. recommended a few DO's she knew personally. Once I got home, I started the process of finding a new dr. Either no one was accepting new patients , they retired, or sadly left town. On June 24th., 2024, I spent several hours with my insurance company and calling numerous clinics and private practices to see if they were accepting new patients: that's when I found Osteopathic PDX. After reading the dr's bio and reading a few positive reviews, I called to see if he was welcoming new patients. Dianne, the office manager, collected some information and put me on the books for Aug 26th., 2024, which was the soonest Monday they could see me since Monday's are my days off. I was shocked and supper bummed that the wait was so long to be seen. I patiently waited for that day to come just to receive a call by Dianne, the morning of having to cancel my apt. due to the dr. not coming into the office that day. Dianne rescheduled the apt., and the soonest Monday was September 1st., 2024. This apt. was then again canceled the day of as well. Although I was not happy, both my primary care and treatment dr. encouraged me to make one last ditch effort in rescheduling another apt. I was thinking "the dr. clearly does not like working on Monday's." Yet again, I was rescheduled for Oct., 21st. Sunday night, I received a voicemail by Dianne saying something to the effect that the dr. had something come up and that my apt. would need to be rescheduled. No. No, I sure will never be "rescheduling" another apt. with this dr., screaming out loud. I've now spent the last 4 months time waiting to be seen by this provider, and rescheduling for a 4th time is something I will not do. Working in the medical field myself, I understand that things come up with dr's and or their staff. Unfortunately, having to move patients around or reschedule them is something that happens from time to time. It personally hurts when I have to make these kind of calls to patients. However, Dianne should've known that this was 3rd cancellation now. There's one thing I know working as a surgical assistant, and that the surgeon I work for and myself would have skipped a lunch break, (as we often do anyway), or come to work an hour early, and or stay an hour later to make it right with that one patient; especially for the one who's been cancelled on one too many times. Dr's and their staff often have that ability to do just that and I wish they would've shown the compassion to do so. Perhaps in the future, when the dr. needs to reschedule the patients, you could color code or have a system in place of how many times you've had to cancel that one particular pt. because every time Dianne would call to cancel my apt., it's like she was unaware that she's now called me 3 times prior cancelling my appointments. I truly felt like she had no care whatsoever for my time spent waiting to be seen. That is was just another day at the office. It's a shame that I even have to write this review. And believe me, it's taken me weeks to think about this. I kept asking myself "should I write a review or should I just let it go?" Something over the course of the last few weeks kept nudging me to do so. Maybe now I will feel better about the situation? Maybe I just needed to write all this to get it off my chest? Because I do patient care, I felt the right thing to do is to let whomever know, who's thinking of becoming a new patient here, make aware of my experience with Osteopathic PDX.

I had a difficult neck/rib problem and Dr. Esmer helped me quite a bit in a single session. Several other practitioners including a chiropractor had tried but his session helped me turn the corner on that problem. This office bills some health insurance plans; call to ask. I'm able to see him for a $40 copay; I'm used to paying out of pocket for this sort of treatment so I feel very fortunate. Since the pandemic, he is often booked out several weeks to a month, so plan ahead.
