My husband and I have been meeting with Paula virtually for about a year now. It's never easy to admit when help is needed, especially within a marriage. Needless to say, we were both nervous to participate in marriage counseling. From the very first session, my husband and I felt very comfortable with Paula. Having recently celebrated another anniversary we thought we'd update our review. The other night, we were sitting in audience at an event, listening and laughing together, and it struck me that I would marry my wife all over again. I suppose that is what makes a marriage- choosing each other again and again, and most of the time this choosing is implicit, but there are other times when it becomes a very conscious thought: yes, I choose you. We continue to negotiate the differences and misunderstandings, and sometimes hurt feelings...and i can't say those negotiations are easy, but they sure are less fraught. I guess we simply trust more and tell each other more often what's going on inside ourselves. I think we both feel the other person's love on a more regular basis? Not sure how to put it exactly. But I know we wouldn't be in the good place we are without having worked with Paula. We contacted Paula after what seemed like irreconcilable differences in our 43 year marriage. There was no one thing we could point to but the arguments and distancing continued and was both suffocating and frightening. Without going into too much detail on why I started working with Paula, I will say that I wasn't exactly looking forward to dealing with these things, and talking to a complete stranger about them was the last thing I wanted to do. I was pessimistic to say the least. At that time, I really had no idea what was possible and was not completely committed to putting in effort to make the necessary changes. Enter Paula. Paula offered a safe space where I was able to talk openly about things and truly develop as a person. There were times when it was hard and uncomfortable, but Paula is so effective at being calming and fair (and very funny!) - and always understanding and finding positives in any situation. I really cannot stress enough how she was able to turn a non-believer such as myself into somebody that understood himself a great deal better and was able to make very significant progress on a personal level. I feel that she really does care about her patients on a personal level and is committed to helping them. In short, I cannot recommend her highly enough. If you are on the fence, or just don't think therapy is for you, give Paula a chance. She made such a huge positive impact on my life, and can do the same for you. Personally, I have seeked individual therapy for dealing with a loss of a loved one. Going into this I was very pessimistic when my own therapist suggested to seek options for my relationship. My boyfriend and I have been together for about a decade, with a turbulent few years. For us we were repeating the same patterns and unsure of our future together. Surely my husband (truly the love of my life) and I would no longer be married if it had not been for Paula. We had longstanding problems that were made worse once Covid hit. We had been to marriage counseling before, but it did not make much of an impact. Calling Paula was a last-ditch, desperate measure. We have actually never met her, having done all of our sessions on Zoom due to Covid. Even in this less than ideal scenario, Paula was very intuitive and had an uncanny ability to get to the heart of the matter. She has seen both of us at our absolute worse and still made us feel respected and heard. I guess the biggest thing I learned was that our sticking points are very common amongst troubled marriages. Using the EFT book made me see that we were getting stuck in a loop. We fed off each other. If we, individually, could stop our part in feeding it, we could perhaps keep from falling off a cliff. Ultimately, we both realized that our marriage and having the person we loved most of all in our life around, was more important than "winning". Is our marriage perfect now? Absolutely not! However, we feel we have the tools to keep ourselves from going off the deed end. Usually, we are able to work through issues by calmly (most of the time) discussing what is wrong. If we do have a blowout, we are able to make a repair using what we have learned from Paula. I know I speak for my husband as well as for myself when I say that Paula Zerfoss saved our marriage. We had been to other couples therapists and, while it was nice to have 50 minutes a week of "safe space" where we could talk about what was bothering us, we didn't feel like we were making real progress. Then we found Paula. She offered the same safe space, but we finally felt like we were getting somewhere - therapy was work and we embraced it. Encouraging, supportive, understanding, direct and not there to solve our relationship issues for us, but to help teach healthy communication skills to us, so that we can better our relationship for ourselves. My husband and I cannot speak highly enough of Paula! She is incredibly insightful and I felt understood us both as people, and as a couple, very well.
