I visited on 3/12/20 to purchase/adopt a male Yorkie. Not a shorkie, morkie, dorkie, or forkie, but a full-bred yorkie. I gave 3 stars because the facility was very clean, the staff was friendly, the paper work didn't take long to complete, and the pup came micro-chipped already. What I'm not happy about is my husband and I asked several times (before I ever filled out any paper work) how big I should expect him to get because I was purchasing with the expectation to breed him. We were told repeatedly no more than 7 pounds, but unfortunately this certainly is not the case because at 14 weeks he is already 7 pounds and not over weight according to the vet, which means he will likely be closer to 15 -20 pounds. There is no way I will be able to breed him because the owner of the dam that I was set to mate him with said he doesn't want my 15-20 pound "supposed yorkie" matting with his 4 pound "full-bred yorkie." I believe it would've been more professional and realistic to tell me (or any customer) "although we can't tell you precisely how big he/she will get, usually these breeds get up to 7 pounds, though some can be bigger depending on genetics and so forth, but his/her parents were 4 and 6 pounds respectively." If I would've received this answer I would've certainly felt that I was purchasing more informed and at my own risk, but that didn't happen. I purchased him with the understanding that he should weigh no more than 7 pounds as an adult. I ordered an Embark test and hopefully I'll find out exactly what his makeup is, but I'll be beyond surprised if it says 100% Yorkshire Terrier. I know people will probably say, "but I bet you love him anyway," and so on and so on, but when you shell out over $1,500 of your hard-earned money with the expectation of getting exactly what you want, then you should get exactly what you want. Although our pets do become a part of our family, they are still property and while I do love him I made this investment with a goal in mind. read more

I had written a very scathing review of Pauley's Pups in reference to a Cocker Spaniel we received from there early Spring. My review expressed our issues with having been told by staff that this cocker spaniel pup would be the perfect dog for our family when he sales person new that we were first time dog owners and had our 9 year old daughter with us. I explained that we went there seeking professional advise on whether our family dynamic was right for a dog and if so, which dog would fit for us as our daughter had her heart on a Yorkie. While we were the ones drawn to this lone cocker, we were never given any fair warnings on what road might lie ahead for us. I also wrote about how we have seen 2 trainers and behaviorist to deal with his resource aggression, fear aggression and overall nasty attitude towards us and the amount of money we have poured into trying to fix him to include him just starting medication (Prozac). Our behaviorist told us some of his issues likely came from his treatment at Pauley's Pups and I wrote about this as well. In response to my posting, I received an email from the owner who read the posting expressing his sorrow and heartbreak for our experience, offering financial compensation, and that I call him to talk about this. I called him and found him to be the most professional, understanding, and compassionate business person I have ever had the privilege of speaking to. I explained to him our experience from beginning to end and he was very sorry we were ever guided in the direction we were from his staff. We talked for probably 30 minutes and I was so impressed by his demeanor. I explained to him that we were not interested in a refund to help with our expenses, which have amassed to about $2000, rather that my wife was heart broken over why we were not informed that this was not the right dog for our family and that while the dog (Hudson is his name) is such a sweet boy 85% of the time, the 15% where he becomes insanely aggressive has caused such heart break and frustration for all of us. I recognized even when posting the review that Hudson's issues were not solely on Pauley's Pups, even if what the behaviorist believes is correct. His issues stem from his breed and we are trying desperately to change them. My issue was really with staff not being professional enough to steer us towards a breed that would work for us and being open to dialogue with me about what dog would work for us and if we were right for having a dog in our home. The owner told me he was going to address that and I believe him. I can't say enough about the professionalism of my call with the owner. We have agreed that I will keep him posted on our efforts. I told him the money refund was not important to me and our efforts are solely geared on fixing our mentally unstable Hudson. We have left the door open for compensation for the finances we have incurred due to this and/or another dog like the one we should have gotten in the first place. But we love Hudson and believe that no matter what, he deserves a good home and a family willing to work to help him overcome whatever it is that caused his aggressive behavior. I thank the owner for his time and if you ever have an issue with Pauley's Pups, I believe this man will make it right. read more

I love this shop! I bought a chihuahua pup back in 2001-2002 and named him BoBo. He was my baby for 13 years until he crossed the rainbow bridge. We then wanted a new fur baby and we went back to Pauley's!! This time we found a sweet little Doxie and named him Mikey . He is a healthy, smart and sweet little boy. Both came with papers, first shots and lots of love. The workers there love these baby's and snuggle them before they leave too. I know breeders and puppy stores get bad reps nowadays, but I have to say that I'm always happy with Pauley's. read more

I liked the place. If you are looking for a specific breed this is your spot. Sure they use puppy mills, but that's how it works. If you like sausage don't look into how it is made, just enjoy. But seriously got a shitzu a month ago and he has been great. The staff was more than helpful, even gave me some dog food to help him switch brands gradually. read more

Great experience. We purchased our first family pup (Teddy Bear breed) about a week ago, and the process was quick. The facility was clean and welcoming. Today, we just came back from our first vet visit and our pup has a clean bill of health. During the week, I spent my time on here and other review sites reading some of the negative feedback because let's be honest, that's the first place most people go to. I learned about puppy mills vs breeders, and the whole spill. Read up on Parvo and the whole nine. Some negative feedback had justification, but a great portion of it was baffling to me. I can't attempt to understand the true situation that caused the feedback, but what I can say is that every thing was not only thoroughly explained to me, but a lot of the possible paranoia was laid out on the paper work that they have you initial and sign before purchase. I even know the origin of where I got my dog from and did a google search on that breeder. They don't hide anything. I'm not sure how it "use to" be, but for my experience, nothing was hidden. Even if you purchase the pup and the vet declares that it's not fit to own, you have 10 days to provide that official checkup to Pauley's Pup and they will let you either exchange it or refund you the money. That's not to say something may develop down the road, but all in all, Pauley's Pup didn't maliciously sell me a pup. 5 stars. read more

Sarah is totally correct. Junior Horton was their main supplier for years. I purchased an adorable little shih tzu from Pauleys Pups in 2002 and she was the sweetest, most lovable dog ever and she became the light of my life. Unfortunately she had many health issues most of her life and we have the vet bills to prove it. Imagine my horror a couple of years ago when the news broke about Junior Horton's puppy mill, as he was the breeder listed on her papers. I am glad I had her in my life as I loved her dearly, but I feel so bad she had to endure so many health problems as well as visits to the vet, hospital and even the critical care hospital in Richmond where sadly she recently passed away at the young age of eight. Please beware of Pauleys Pups, don't end up heartbroken like me, it's a horrible feeling. read more

I bought a mini Dachshund from Pauley's pups one year ago on June 18th. It was actually purchased for my nephew but circumstances with divorce landed this dog with me at 4 months of age. The dog was taken to the vet immediately after purchase and passed all exams. Sheldon is now 1 year old and he has been trained by a professional trainer to be a service dog for my invalid mother. They are a bonded team and now we think he was sent from above for our situation. He has been an inspiration and a blessing ! They have become well known around Richmond as they frequent the local stores and they have developed their own fan club around town. Thank You Pauley's Pups !! read more

My kids and I spent months visiting, waiting until we found the puppy meant to be a part of our family. When we finally did I was told I had to by the food that he had been eating since he got there. Which I did. We brought "Fig" home and he was beyond listless. He didn't bark. He wouldn't eat. He wouldn't drink. I was beside myself. I grilled some chicken and cut it into tiny pieces and he ravaged it. Telling me that he would eat, just not the food they gave him. Desperately worried that this two pound puppy had not made a sound, refused to drink water and ate only a tiny bit of chicken I took him to the vet. According to the vet, his gums were tacky and he was malnourished. They tested him for Parvo which the vet prepared us that if he tested positive he probably wouldn't survive. My children were sobbing and beyond devastated. The vet assured me this didn't happen in the two days that he was in our care. The vet reached out to Pauleys, spoke to them on the phone and faxed them tests results and their findings. I heard nothing back. I then went to Pauleys after weeks of waiting to hear back. They claimed they cut me a check to cover the cost of food and Parvo testing but had no proof that they could show me. They then told me that Mr. Pauley was in the hospital so they would have to wait for him to get out to approve a refund for the cost of food and testing. That was in July. It is now almost January and nothing. Be warned. These people care NOTHING about you or your puppy once you write them the check. read more

We just bought this beautiful puppy from here and we got so attached to her....she seemed kinda off and sick so we took her to the vet. Come to find out she is VERY sick and the vet said 50% of the puppies from Pauleys pups are sick. Please do NOT get a puppy from these people. They are a scam and need to be shut down! Its not right to pay so much money, get attached and find out the puppy is no good because they obviously don't take care of them or check them before they sell them. Puppy mill!!!! read more

Giving it two stars because the staff as well as Mr. Pauley were very helpful and understanding, the place was very clean and the prices were pretty good- HOWEVER- that being said, this was one of the worst experiences of my life. I have never owned a dog before, so I did my research on how to take care of a puppy and on different breeds. I wanted a small breed that was a puppy, which is nearly impossible to find in a shelter. I knew from my research that Pauley's and places like it were a huge risk, but I decided to go up there and look at the dogs because it's the only place where I could actually walk in and look at the dogs and they also carry multiple breeds at an affordable price. I hadn't intended on purchasing a dog that day, but I ended up buying one anyways. It was $800 for my little shorkie, and he was just as sweet and loving as could be....this is where the happy part ends. I hadn't even had my puppy a week, his vet appointment to check his health and get the rest of his shots was just 4 days after I bought him. He had been an extremely energetic, playful, and sweet puppy until the morning of his appointment. He became ill and began throwing up over and over. We took him to the vet and we were shocked as they told us he had Parvovirus and would most certainly die. We hadn't even had our pup for a whole week and we couldn't believe that our once happy pup was nearly dying in our arms within hours. Long story short- after a week of being hooked to IVs we thought he was going to pull through, but he ended up dying suddenly on the 7th night, I was devastated and this being my first dog I've ever owned, this was a traumatic experience to say the least. I will say that Pauley seemed to genuinely care, he refunded me and paid for the vet bills. It still hurts a lot and it's a burden because of the virus living dormant on any surface for years- I won't be able to get another dog anytime soon without worrying about going through the same terrible experience. I'll let everyone think what they want about my story- it was a terrible experience, but it could have happened if I had gotten the puppy somewhere else- and at least I was refunded, even though the pain may never go away, they could have been a lot less nice about the situation. read more

No stars. I was uncomfortable in this place from the moment I stepped in to the moment I stepped out. It didn't feel like a place where you could connect and bring home a new member of the family.. It felt like a car dealership. The prices are super high, they even have financing... How in the world are you selling an actual living breathing puppy for so much money that financing is an option... If you aren't comfortable with the price they will drop it a couple of hundred dollars if you take it right then and there like you're not talking about a living breathing thing, which is a big commitment! I get wanting to get these puppies homes, but the way it's run just leaves a lot to question from potential families looking to get a puppy. Apart from the investigation about them not having reputable breeders (puppy mills) the vibes were not good, and unfortunately for the puppies there, I would not give my money to this business to find my fur baby. read more

I purchased a Teddy Bear for my daughters 13th birthday in 2014. The dog is suppose to be a mix with bichon frise and shih Tzu. The dog look like a teddy bear when he was smaller. he was only suppose to get to about 8 or 10lbs he is now 17lbs. My vet started to ask was he mixed with anything else as he got older. My oldest daughter started Vet tech for school and took him in to be groomed vet teacher this year, the teacher told her to get a DNA kit because the dog was mixed with something else. My daughter got the kit for Christmas and the results came back 50% Shih Tzu 25% Bichon 12.5% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 12.5% mixed bread (they have no idea with what) I paid over $800.00 for a dog that is not what was told to me. I have a12year old shih tzu that is the puppy of 2 that were purchased from Pauleys. I have a 9 month old shih tzu and recently a Sichon that were Pauley 's pups. Everyone there has always been very helpful, respectful and kind to me. Mr. Pauley is as nice a man as I have ever met. When My 9 month old pup experienced health problems, I talked to Mr. Pauley as well as the ladies there with several phone calls and each was as concerned and kind as could be. Saw their web site and they had exactly what we wanted, so we drove three hours to get a puppy. Got there and picked our dog, paid, all the stuff. Then we learned our puppy had a congenital heart defect and possibly was in congestive heart failure. They offer an exchange in their contract but we do not want a different puppy now that she is part of our family. So strike one for them. Strike 2, evidence online of legal action for sourcing from puppy mills. This was confirmed when her registration came in (ACA, which is predominately used by mills and not considered reputable) and the facility listed was online as a known mill. Strike 3, the local vet we brought her to down the road from the store immediately put her in isolation when we got there. They said as soon as they hear a puppy is from there it goes right to isolation because they almost always have communicable diseases. The vet told us he would happily call and make them pay for the visit and that the locals know them to be less than reputable. I do not recommend even considering purchasing from them. They should be shut down and all out in jail. If I could have given a negative review I would have. Don't make the same mistake we did. read more

In 2005 I visited Pauley's Pups just to see puppies. I ended up falling in love with a Shih Tzu puppy who is the most amazing dog, but has numerous health conditions. When I first took him to the vet, he was diagnosed with a mild heart murmur. At 9 weeks old, it wasn't evident how many health problems he was going to have. That's why good breeders give a minimum of a 1 or 2 year health guarantee. As time has gone on, my dog's heart murmur developed into degenerative valve heart disease. He developed a biliary mucocele that required emergency gallbladder removal surgery. We almost lost him and he spent a week in the ICU at a local emergency vet. He also has IVDD (invertebral disc disease) in his back, as well as a luxating patella in his left knee. Those are all genetic conditions. Gingerbread is like a child to me and my husband, and we've spent many thousands of dollars on his medical care. He's always been given the best of everything in regards to his diet, dental care, etc. He now gets cold laser therapy treatments for his back and knee, sees a veterinary opthalmalogist, cardiologist, and holistic veterinarian on a regular basis. All of those things are giving us more time with my little angel and we'll do anything for him. We have three other Shih Tzus (age 7 yrs, 2 1/2 yrs, and 1 yr.) from responsible breeders. None of them has a single health problem. Their initial cost was more, but in the long run they've cost us much less money, and of course less heartache. I will never, ever buy another puppy from a pet store. read more

I'm truly upset w/Pauley's Pups I purchased a yorkie @ 10wks old on 7/15 for my daughters birthday & based on the contract you as the owner has 10 days to get the animal tested to see if the animal was healthy. I made an appt w/the vet on 7/16 & received an appt for 7/17. Just to receive a bill almost totaling $400 my dog was diagnosed w/a high white cell count, giardia, ear infection, upper respiratory infection & the list goes on. I contacted Pauley pups while @ the vet to see was it something they could do, reminding them I'm not trying to return my dog because my family was attached to him. The response from the manager is they don't cover was my puppy was diagnosed with because it was curable. The manager did specify if the vet believed my puppy was unfit then a note could be written & sent to them. No success @ all. During the follow-up visit on 7/20, I was informed that his blood count doubled from the last visit more test needed to be done & xrays to see if his liver & kidneys were working properly. The bill on this visit was almost $600. My dog being having some good days when he's playful & a good appetite & he has his worse days when I feel helpless for him to see he may be suffering w/pain. I hope on 7/22 for the next follow-up we get good reviews. This is not fair to me or my daughter being new pet owners & I have to pay for extreme pet bills because my dog was neglected & not receiving proper care. My new addition to my family is so lovable & I definitely want him to receive the proper care. read more

okay lets get just a little bit real and honest here: first of all we have and were searching for over 9 months to find a small breed puppy in every shelter from va, nc, sc, pa, de, conn, ny, and nj......yes all of them. we heard time and time adopt from a shelter, they have what you need, do not pay for something we can get you and you can save a puppies life!!! so, we found the perfect puppy , saw her and loved her immediately. went to pick her up and were told we only adopt to the public the other dogs? any cute small breed and we just give them to the volunteer kids and adults that work here!!!!!! the small cute breeds just make out webpage and images look good!!! heartbreak four times, four different shelters, and everyone wants to jump on pauleys??? so, lets take inventory shall we: first: pauleys ;have puppies available, second: people complain about puppy mills yet no one says that most if not all shelter dogs come from those puppy mills or worse!! third: pitbull anything is not allowed in a rental in va and other states and fourth: you have to pay minimum 175.00 for a dog in a shelter, you can work with pauleys and still manage to receive a beautiful puppy for 300.00 -399.00 !!!! so, you can gather all family and friends in 5 states like we have and search for 8 months and still have nothing........ or you can head to pauleys and stop the madness!!!! puppy mills or not......every puppy deserves a good home. if you cannot afford the medical bills, do not get a puppy. oh and parvo is carried from a simple walk in the area where another animal had it and then you walk in a get a puppy or any animal from a shelter as well. do your homework and understand that any puppy or dog can get parvo!!!!! you would still pay to bring home a dog whom had parvo from the shelter because you feel you are saving a life!!! congratulations, you have now adopted an animal that will never have a normal gi tract again!!!!! read more
