I have a small dog and this was her first time at a grooming salon. I let them know that I wanted to be sure that they would be gentle with her and I liked my first impress upon walking in. I could see they were calm individuals and honestly this helped me feel at ease with leaving my little girl with them for grooming. You can drop off your sight and they give you an estimate of about when the pet will be ready for pickup. There's no real need to have a big parking area for something like this. However they also have a day care for dogs and I think we'll try it out sometime. There are a few parking spots on the premises and plenty of parking on the road. This is on a side street away from Midlothian turnpike so it's a relatively quiet area anyway. We will return. read more

Brought my dog here for the week of christmas. I was referred by family and had very high expectations, but unfortunately it did not go as I had hoped. I was called an hour before I picked him up (on a saturday when all vets are closed) and I was told that my dog was drooling more than usual and there looked to be traces of blood in it but they did not see any visible injury after looking in his mouth. I was assured that there was no medical attention necessary and not to worry, that he was not acting out of the ordinary (he is a VERY high energy 1 year old pitbull). I get there and I am told that there is now a foul odor and maybe an infection (still no sign of injury). he does not even come greet me. I immediately open his mouth and find the injury myself. It is pussing and bloody (hard to miss if you actually looked in his mouth). i am then told by workers that i should use hydrogen peroxide to clean his injury, but then they call back 20 minutes later advising me that that is not safe for dogs. (is there ANY knowledge of dog safety in this business?). I take him home and give him a bath. I notice there are red cuts on his head (pic included) so I call them again and they tell me they don't know how that happened and there is nothing sharp in his cage and nobody knows of anything he did to acquire that injury. and he is acting as if he is terrified of me touching him. flinching and ducking. I finish his bath and he immediately starts declining. he is lethargic, actively bleeding and drooling from the mouth (it smells), and he is shaking. I take him to the emergency vet and he has a high fever (that is actively rising) and he hid under the chair shaking intensely. I call the owner who was very quick to defend herself and the business and was very dismissive of my dogs injuries. I learned that my dog bit his tongue terribly and by the time he got the care he needed his tissue was necrotic. his tongue was black and pussing. this injury was infected long enough for the vet to draw blood to ensure his organs weren't actively failing. he also lost weight to the point where his ribs are showing now. my dog eats 4 cups of food a day, and my bag of food that i brought was only 1/4 emptier than when i dropped it off and his toys were still in the bags i brought them in. i asked for compensation for my stay or a portion of the 1,000 dollar vet bill and was told it could've happened at home and they aren't at fault so they cannot compensate. while i will say the owner tried to be empathetic, it wasn't until after she defended herself, staff, and business and was rude until i tried to be understanding of her position. My mother also called and was immediately dismissed and rudely spoken to until she showed the owner that she came with a nice attitude. i think this could have been handled better and with more respect and empathy for me and my dog. i hope they pay closer attention to their dogs to prevent any other injury from getting this bad. edit: after reading a review also posted today, i see that the owner promised another guest a partial refund for her stay. i suppose being nice gets you nowhere in this world, as i am now 1,400 dollars out of money and was NEVER even considered for a refund. not a fan of this place. read more

Unsure of how this place is for boarding dogs, but let me STRONGLY encourage you to keep your cats away from this place. I boarded my cats for the Christmas holiday, in separate "condos", both with bags of food, treats, and toys brought by me -- I paid Dogs Day Inn a total $480. I called 3-4 times to check in on my pets during, and was told they were "fine." Initially, this lack of detail about their stay made me uncomfortable, but I accepted that they were likely short staffed over the holiday and took what I was given. Upon arrival to pick them up 12/27/23, two cats that were not mine were brought up in MY carriers and given to me -- unacceptable on it's own, but the horrible job done by these employees was just beginning. Without even knowing which cats were mine, I sincerely doubt any of the updates I was given were accurate or done with care. I was not told at time of drop off that trimming nails would be $20 PER CAT by manager Haley who checked me in, and then charged for that at pickup. Manager Haley was there at the time of pickup, and admitted to myself and my mom that the price was not shared with me at drop off, but I was still charged the full amount. Toys that I brought for their "private" condos went missing with no explanation, and most of their toys and comfort items were never even removed from the bags i brought them in, still folded and arranged the way I left them days ago. The excuse given to me by both manager Haley and owner Kristen is that they have plenty of bedding and toys, so as to not get owned items mixed up in the laundry. I was told and even encouraged to bring my own items, and then fed excuses when no one decided to do their job and offer my babies their comfort items in a strange place. My elderly cat (and certified ESA) was not given her wet food, with more than 85% of what she was sent with being given back to me. Let me be clear, THESE PEOPLE WILLINGLY AND KNOWINGLY DID NOT FEED MY CAT FOR FIVE DAYS. An excuse was offered for not feeding my cat, but instructions were shared and written in the bag so as to leave no question. At every turn and with every mistake, I was met with incompetent employees and managers, and the owner Kristen as well. Zero solutions offered, zero accountability taken, and basic questions about the quality of their stay and care went unanswered by employees and managers, as well as owner Kristen. Manager Haley went so far as to go downstairs and cry instead of offering an apology or support like I hadn't just left my babies in the hands of clearly incompetent people for almost a week. I was never offered an appropriate apology for this egregious mismanagement of my poor sweet babies, and told I would need to call myself to speak to the owner - horrible customer service management yet again. I am disgusted and will NEVER take my animals back to this cruel place, and I recommend you keep your kitties far away as well -- no one should have to worry or grieve for their babies like this. I was contacted by owner Kristen on 12/28 and 12/29, fed more apologies, and promised a partial refund as a solution for abusing my pets by withholding their food during their stay at Dogs Day Inn. After this conversation, I have heard and received nothing else -- essentially told what I wanted to hear by owner Kristen, who backed and defended the incompetence of her own employees during our conversations. If not for the blatant abuse of my pets, avoid this place for the sheer incompetence from the top-down. This place will not care for your pets or take accountability regarding their inability to provide care. read more

I took my Shih-Tzu to Dogs Day Inn today for the first time. They did a wonderful job grooming him and he looks great. The staff is very friendly and answered all my questions. They called me and discussed a problem he had with his tail. I was not aware of the problem. They made their suggestion and then asked me if I would want to handle the problem another way. I told them to go ahead so his tail could grow in perfectly. I will be taking him back there for future grooming! read more

Extremely poor customer service with poor communication re: pricing and pick up. I was looking to board my 2 dogs as well as my FIL's dog for one day. I was throwing a party for my 3 year old son and didn't want to deal with dogs AND a group of wild sugar crazed toddlers. I spoke with a woman over the phone about possible options - she made it clear doggie daycare was not possible for a Saturday but said I could pay to board all 3 dogs to share one for $100 but I would have to pick them up by 6. I agreed, discussed with FIL then called again to confirm booking and the plan (just to recap - x2 conversations about price and pick up!). Day of party my husband and FIL drop the dogs off at noon and are rudely told they will NOT allow us to pick our dogs the same day despite planning to pick up before 6 (last pick up time for Saturday boarders) So to clarify - YES I was planning to pay for a full day of boarding for only 5 1/2 hours. Well FIL was not going to leave his dog overnight so he took her back to our home. I left our 2 dogs there with strict instructions that pick up on Sunday was only between 3&4. I'm pretty mad about having a crazy lab who had to be shut inside the house during the party (barking and whining the whole time -- thank you for that DogsDayInn) BUT the cherry on top comes Sunday when we pick up my 2 dogs. We were charged for 2 days boarding instead of one day because they charge by the day! Our digs were there barely 28 hours and only there that long due their restrictive pick up policy. The woman's response when we asked why we were not told? " well you know now". No apologies for any sort of misunderstanding- The only impressive thing about this place is their dedication to the DGAF attitude....they will not receive my business again but as the staff worker informed me "that's fine." read more

DO NOT USE THIS BUSINESS IF YOU LOVE YOUR PETS We left our cat and dog here for 1 week and when we got them home we saw that our dog had obviously not been fed, he lost a lot of weight and was starving and lethargic. He can be nervous at meal times, but all they needed to do was pay a little attention to him and make sure he starts eating and he's fine. Our previous kennel never had any problems keeping him healthy. For the prices they charge they should at a bare minimum make sure your pets are adequately fed. The overall cut was fine. Charlie ( my dog ) is only 6 pounds. The charged us $60 because they said " the dog was feisty." We have never had this problem before. After picking up the dog we noticed blood because we had been cut on his paw. That's probably why Charlie was " feisty." read more

I am so happy I found this place!! Hands down my favorite place to take my boy from here on out and I travel from Short Pump just to receive the tender loving care they give my fur baby. They are all inclusive with playtime and outdoor time and I love that they have indoor/outdoor runs. It ends up being much cheaper than the place I used to go that nickeled and dined me to death for services I was never sure he received. To top it all off they have great bathing and grooming services to make sure he is as cute as a button when I get him back. This is extra but they do a very professional job. The icing on the cake is that they offer all sorts of special treats that you can purchase to take home or call in and have them give you baby while you're gone. All reasonably priced :) read more

First let me say, one star isn't because of the grooming. My pets came home super clean and neatly cut. I dropped my two dogs off at 9 AM approximately for grooming. I called at 2:30 PM to see when they would be done. The young lady said probably closer to 5 PM which then I thought I heard her say I will call you. At 6 PM I got a call asking if I am coming to get my pets. I said, I have been waiting for your call. When I got there at 6:25 PM to get them, I was told there is an extra $5 fee per pet. I paid the fee so I could take my pets home. But how can you charge me a late fee if you didn't call to let me know the dogs were ready? I was told the owner said charge it even though the staff acknowledged it was a miscommunication between us. That is such bad service. If this is the way the company operates then I have no problem not giving them my business. I fully expect a call from the owner to have this resolved. Update- I received a call and they refunded the $10. Thank you for resolving and acknowledging the miscommunication. read more

Sorry that this review isn't exactly timely. I just realized it was sitting my drafts. Hopefully things have changed since the experience below... My dogs came to Dog's Day Inn for a two day stay during the first week of April 2012. I dropped them off on Friday morning with their favorite blanket to lay in the run. On Friday night I received a call from the front desk asking if I was going to be dropping off Lucy for her stay. I was mildly concerned since Lucy had already been in their care for 12 hours, but I dismissed it as an honest mistake. What I can't dismiss as an honest mistake is what I encountered when I picked them up. Initially, I was too excited to see them to notice how filthy they were, but once I put them in the car I smelled the problem that my eyes had, at first, overlooked. Both dogs were covered in pee and poop over at least 1/3 of their bodies. When I got them home - after a cold ride with windows down and mouth breathing- I noticed that the blanket we sent with them had never been taken out of the bag. If that is their policy, then I can't complain, but I'd also expect for them to be up front about it when I leave it with them. It begs me to question what else they fail to tell me. After their baths both dogs were exhausted and slept nearly non-stop for days. This isn't cause for any huge concern but they were definitely out of sorts. Also on their first night back, someone knocked on the door - which is the only time my oldest dog barks- and we noticed that she lost her voice while she was being boarded as well. Barking is out of character for this dog so it was just another small clue that the stay must have been less than comfortable for them. I feel like a horrible dog owner for putting my dogs in this situation. Both are house broken and would never lay in their own waste if given other options. Combined with the exhaustion and lost voice, I will never take them to Dog's Day Inn again. Their website says that they treat their dogs like a member of their family. That is either a lie or I am incredibly concerned for their children. read more

I read the one scathing review of Dog's Day Inn and I thought I would add my own experience to the review process. I was traveling with my family by car to a wedding in Richmond, from Boston. I had no one to watch the family dog for the night and the hotel in which we were staying would not allow golden retriever-sized pets. My wife found this place on the internet, and I'm certainly happy for that. Our experience was overall a very positive one. I dropped my dog off on a Saturday afternoon. The neighborhood was quiet, with, of course, the exception of the barking dogs. I did not take the tour, as Sara C. claims she did, but I felt that what I had seen was positive enough. As far as the other reviewer on this thread, Sara C's, claim that the place did smelled like urine, I would have to disagree. However, it did smell like dog. It is a dog kennel. There are a lot of dogs there. So, I expected that. I did not, however, find anything offensive about the odors emanating from the building. I felt perfectly safe leaving my dog, Dave, there. I was even happy that Dave would have some other canine playmates while we were gone. My one complaint was that their hours of operations are enormously restricted on Sundays, but they were so very accommodating that this was never a problem. This is a place where you can leave your dog for an overnight stay and their policy is that you may only pick your dog up between 4pm and 5pm on Sundays. At first I thought I would have to forget about the whole thing, since we were on the road and had a schedule to keep, but when I spoke to them on the phone and expressed this concern, they said that as long as I made arrangements with them for a solid time to retrieve my retriever, they would work with me. So, they let my pick up Dave at 11am on Sunday (the owner herself coming into work to make this possible) and I am grateful for that. I have nothing but good things to say about Dog's Day Inn. Good facilities, great customer service, and I think Dave had a fantastic time! read more

Very disappointed. We have our two Huskies at daycare twice a week. I recently noticed some changes on my male but could not put my finger on it, however, decided this morning to put activity trackers on both. In 7 hours they had not even 20 minutes so my husband asked if they play with other dogs at all. He was told not only no but also that our male shows aggression towards other dogs when he is with our female. So there were no playing with other dogs for both which defeats the whole purpose why we put them there. We feel that dogs days inn took the money and did not care about our doggies at all. We are done with them. Oh one more thing: when waiting for the dogs to brought out from wherever they spent all day they handed us over the wrong husky. read more

I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am with this boarding facility. I did quite a bit of research before choosing Dogs Day Inn for boarding my 2 yr old husky mix for a long weekend and couldn't have been more pleased my choice. The front desk check in process was quick and easy. All the employees were super friendly and made my pup feel right at home. I also LOVE that they offer a suite option for those dogs that need a more living room type of stay. Couch, tv, blankets....just like home! I called everyday to check up on him and the staff was super understanding and informative. We have been taking our Great Dane there since he was a puppy. Our dog is so well cared for. We LOVE that they separate the dogs into pens that are categorized by size and temperament. The prices are amazing for the care and the dogs get lots of play time with other dogs. They don't just hire high school kids who don't care about the animals and all the employees are very knowledgeable of many breeds. The groomers are VERY caring in what they do to make our dog smell and look great. Very well managed company. Our dog will never go anywhere else. read more

We boarded our dog here for a weekend. Our friends have boarded their dog here for years without any issues so we decided to try them out. Unfortunately we won't be going back. Noticed a rash on our dog's belly the day after picking him up and after taking him to the vet learned it was a staph infection. She suspects he got it from the lack of cleanliness of the boarding facility. Although everyone we interacted with were polite we just can't take him some place that endangers his health. read more

DO NOT GO HERE. I did daycare and in 2 hours my dog was put in a kennel. I asked how was his day? The lady at the desk said I have no idea when I got here at 3pm he was inside. We just got there at 1pm!! I picked him up at 6 and he was distressed and NOT tired. We got a bath, so they kept him inside since 3 for the bath till 6pm with only 2 hours (of supposed playtime.) I have used them before and there is NO supervision of the dogs in the yard. Just TATTOOED workers and look exhausted. Never again for my baby.....DO NOT TRY IT. Research a good spa. read more

I've been taking my husky to Dog's Day Inn for both boarding and daycare for over a year. I am always impressed with the staff's friendly demeanor, and they seem to really love the dogs. She is really hard to groom - both because she's very hair, and she also hates getting baths, but she comes out smelling and looking great the times I've had her groomed there. The facilities always look clean, and my dog is always happy and healthy after her visits. I like that they have air conditioned boarding and a backup generator to ensure that the dogs are comfortable even during bad weather. I recommended this facility to a friend, and she also brings her dog here. The only thing I would change is to extend the hours for pickup to 7 pm. It can be a challenge to get there from the other side of the city in the evenings after work. read more

I took my two dogs here for the first time Wednesday 5/30/12 after reading a few good reviews and liking what I saw on their website. I was wrong in thinking I would like it for my fur babies though. When I dropped them off and I got the "grand tour"...I right there wanted to take them somewhere else - but I didn't have time to shop around and book a new place because I had to catch a plane. It smelled like pee,and their kennels for bigger dogs are bare concrete with tiny weird semi-elevated bed thingies that looked horribly uncomfortable (I was told they put blankets in for them at night). I didn't get to see where the smaller dogs are kept as my Chi was originally going to stay with my Boxer as double occupancy but he ended up getting out of the bigger kennel so they had to separate them after I already had left. I also stressed that my Boxer was deaf and asked many times making sure they were OK with caring for a special needs dog and was assured it wouldn't be an issue. So fast forward to today when I picked them up (6/4/12) - Beau (my Chi) was fine which is as expected. Sadie (Boxer) has a few scratches on her and one pretty nasty gash that looks like it's on the verge of becoming infected now. I didn't notice it until I got her home, but I called up and asked why I wasn't informed that she was injured. I was told there was no report made and it was probably just a surface scratch. I reassured the woman it was more than a tiny scratch and then I was told maybe it was from her running out back and that the bamboo was cut down and she may have ran through some stumps and cut herself. I had 2 issues with this idea: first one being - why are you letting my DEAF dog run around by herself when I specifically told them she needed tight supervision during play, 2 - why are you leaving SHARP bamboo stumps where dogs run around and play?!?! I didn't ask for them to be bathed, but the fact that they saw she had peed in the kennel and didn't even try spot wiping the pee off of her face and ears is just disgusting to me and offensive that they would let my dog just be with urine on her. Not to mention that it's bizarre that they "didn't see" the gash on her elbow - with how scabbed it is there's no way they didn't see bright red blood on a pure white dog. Give me a break. The only positive thing is the staff is nice (although they sound annoyed when answering the phone) and the woman I spoke with when I called and complained was apologetic even though she was trying to explain away Sadie's cuts and gash. They will never get my business again, nor will they ever get a good review or referral from me. PS - I am adding this review in more than one place because I want people to actually read a real review, not something a staff member created and posted to promote their own business... Update (6/5/12): I noticed this morning that my poor baby girl has sores and cuts in her armpits as well, along with bruises where the straps of her harness go on her when it's snapped in place. This means one of 2 things - she was either yanked super hard with her harness on, or she was left in her harness the entire time she was there and she got stuck on something and she was struggling to get free. I'm heated, I had to take her to the vet for a full work up to make sure she doesn't have any other injuries I am not noticing and get her checked by a vet that knows what else to look for with things like this. I will be making a complaint with the BBB and sending this sleezy place a bill for her vet visit. Don't take your pet here if you expect your dog to be treated how you would treat them. You wouldn't allow your human child to be treated this way would you?!?! read more

The staff here are fantastic. Each person we have had contact with (I'm sure by now we have interacted with the entire staff) has been professional, kind, and very devoted to the dogs. I have noticed during our drop-offs/pick-ups that the staff generally remembers every dog's name and greets each as their own. Honestly, that might not mean much overall but it definitely speaks to their commitment. We drop our dog off for a few days nearly every month, and this last month he spent nearly two weeks there. Each time, he was returned to us very happy, well fed, cared for and clean. Even on the visits where we don't have them groom him, he still comes home just as clean as he was when we drop him off. They are great about letting you know how your dog did and what their temperament was like during the stay. The rates are great, the facilities are clean and spacious. I will not bring our dog anywhere else in Richmond. read more

I was going out of town last month (July 2013) and my regular dog sitter was unavailable (she was going to be out of town the same weekend). The Saturday before I was leaving, I took my dog with me to go check the place out. My dog is very expressive about whether or not she likes something; she had such dislike for a previous kennel that she peed all over the floor in the reception area before we left. She liked this place (she was trying to climb over the back porch railing down into the play yard directly behind the main building) and the setup is excellent for an extremely energetic, athletic dog like her. We received a tour from Heather, one of the staff members. I felt that their place would be a good fit for my dog. I scheduled her to be boarded the following weekend and dropped her off on Friday morning and picked her up the following Monday. When I picked her up, she was her usual happy, energetic self. She obviously had a good time; I plan on using this place again in the future. It's reasonably priced and my dog was well taken care of. read more

Our 45-pound, hghly energetic husky stayed at the Chesterfield Dog's Day Inn for five days and four nights. She came home beautifully groomed and healthy. The staff was friendly and confident. This was the first stay for our husky and we will gladly return at the beginning of July for a fourth of July celebration with our family--and because they have tiny dogs, it will be good to have our husky at Dog's Day Inn, fully exercised and socializing with dogs closer to her size. Within four hours of picking our dog up, we had to put her down. Our 16 year old dog had never been boarded before, so my wife and I did some research and took a tour. The facility is clean, spacious and each holding area is spacious with an indoor/outdoor access area for the dog. It seemed perfect. We vacationed for a week and came back on Saturday to get the dog. While driving back to Virginia, we received a call advising us the dog had an absess or growth on one of her legs. They indicated "we are not vets", but they cut the area to relieve pressure and said only blood came out, so she was probably fine. But, they recommended a vet. We arrived four hours later to a dog that couldn't stand on her hind legs and was obviously very sick. There was no absess. Both rear legs to the hip were very swolen. We placed her on the ground to walk, but she was unable to put weight on her back legs. We were going to wait until Monday, but she was too sick to wait, so we took her to a 24 hour emergency vet. It was there the vet indicated she had severe infection going deep. The staff at Dogs Day Inn indicated they had our dog out to go to the bathroom earlier in the day. The vet indicated that was not possible because there was no way she was able to put weight on her rear legs for at least a couple days. She had a high fever. The vet indicate that due to the severity of the infection, it probably had been brewing prior to dropping her off, so the facility does not appear to have been responsible for the infection itself. Further, since the source of the infection was unknown and the infection was intense, our decision to put her down would have likely been the same had we been notified a few days earlier. However, she was in obvious pain and had suffered for those final few days, and we received no call until they went to cut her hair and bathe her prior to pick up. Also, they indicate they had had her out to go to the bathroom when it was obvious she wasn't able to walk for at least a few days. Bottom line, the facility is as nice as it gets, but I have serious doubts that the animals get the attention that is adverised. My dog, likely, was stranded in her holding area until she was taken out for her hair cut, and she suffered because of it. I don't blame them for her illness or death. I do blame them for neglect that left this unaddressed until the day we were picking her up, meaning she spent at least 2-3 days in great pain. read more

We have only used the grooming. The ladies who do the grooming are great and are very friendly. The girl who works the front desk (long dark hair and tattoo on her right arm, I think she may be a supervisor) is ALWAYS unfriendly and rude. To the point that we decided after the second visit we would only use the grooming services. She is indifferent and ruff with the dogs she handles. Dogs Day Inn has helped our dog Sadie so much! She was reactive on leash, and we weren't able to successfully introduce her to other dogs. Now, with their help, she not only has dog friends but we feel confidence knowing she has fun and gets the play and exercise she needs while we are at work. They always seem excited when we bring her in and she is always happy when she sees where we are taking her, and they clearly take great care of her and answer all of our questions. I highly recommend them, especially for anyone who is worried that their dog is reactive to other dogs or isn't sure that their dog can play with other dogs. They are definitely pros and they care about what they do, and we are so grateful for them. read more

We boarded our four cats here for five days while we were away for a long weekend. We have boarded them at other places in the past and although two of the four are very nervous and cranky they usually settle down. They have all previously been relocated to the US from another country which involved lots of travelling in their carriers, including on a long haul flight, and a couple of nights of boarding. When we got them to their new home over here they arrived clean, in good spirits, and keen to check out their new residence. I am explaining this background so any readers can see that our cats are pretty resilient, and also to demonstrate the level of service I would expect from any decent boarding provider. When we got the cats home from Dogs Day Inn, two of them seemed fine although they have slept almost constantly since they got back. One of the others was very grumpy - she gets like that at the vet too but has always been fine as soon as we get her home. However she remained very anxious for 24 hours after returning home. The fourth cat, who is very sweet, friendly and easy to handle, came back reeking of stale urine, as did the toy we had placed in his carrier when we took him to the facility. He had been put into a different carrier, so it seemed to us that he had probably urinated on the toy and himself while still in his own carrier on the day we dropped him off, and nobody had bothered to clean him up for the whole time. This definitely wasn't fresh pee (any cat owner knows the difference!) and he absolutely stunk to high heaven. As I say he is very easy to handle and is amenable to being bathed. If it had been one of the grumpier ones I could understand that the staff might not be willing to try to bathe them, but he's fine with it. Since getting home he is also sleeping a lot, seems very skinny and hungry, and is meowing in his sleep - which he has never done before and it suggests to me that he must have been calling out constantly while he was there. We definitely won't use this facility again and the experience has soured our whole vacation experience. At the moment I feel reluctant to even consider boarding them again and will probably opt for a home sitter service next time. read more
