One of my absolute favorite gems in New York City. Cozy and warm, inviting and artfully decorated - it's one of the few sanctuaries in the Lower East Side where you can have an hours-long conversation with an old friend, or get some writing done on your laptop, without any pretentious fixings. First, the coffee. Excellent and rich, you can't go wrong with most any drink you order. The coffee takes a few minutes, but that's because every cup is given the utmost attention to detail. My friends have had the tea / smoothies over the years and we've never been disappointed. The food, particularly the pastries, are exceptional. Sometimes I'll come here just for those even when I'm not in the mood for coffee. Pastries from a coffee store can be a hit or miss, but here - they're the star. Incredibly variety, everything tastes lovely. I love the ambience in here. It reminds me of stepping into my childhood best friend's home, where her Egyptian mother would continue to feed me tea and delicious snacks any time I came over. I was given 2 blueberry scones, a raisin with oatmeal scone, pain aux raisin, and a croissant all for $5.43 after tax! Scones (5/5) were so deliciously crumbly with bursts of blueberry flavor and don't make your mouth feel like the Sahara desert. Pain aux raisin (4.5/5) as a raisin hater I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty the pain aux raisin was and didn't mind the raisins sprinkled throughout. Settled on this spot for Sunday brunch because all the nearby restaurants are apparently too high in demand. This humble location exceeded my expectations, and I highly suggest the sandwich and soup combo. There's also ample amount of indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice I love how extensive the menu is, and service was great. I took one star off though because the outdoor seating area felt dirty and I saw some flies. The BBQ chicken sandwich could have also been heated, and the sandwich portions could be just a wee bit bigger. Feels like a homey version of Panera, with healthier options and local business vibes. I think the hype here is more for the ambiance than the food. I got the Pause sandwich (eggs, avocado, cheese pretty much), and it was pretty good but nothing out-of-this-world; multigrain bread was a fun touch I'll say! It gets pretty crowded during the day, but they have both tables and booths making it a good environment to both get some work done or just chat with friends. However, I will say I wish there was more ventilation for this brutal summer we are having; it gets quite hot inside with just a couple of slow ceiling fans on top of you. 01/05/2023 Went with a friend around 1PM to grab brunch. Customer service is amazing as the cashier helped me figure out how I can pay in 2 different payment methods. I ordered 2 items to stay and 2 items to go. * Chai Latte (to stay) - tasted great, not overly sweet [4.5/5] * Small Acai Very Berry Bowl (to stay) - loved it! Strawberries were sweet and all the fruits were fresh. It's actually a pretty big portion for a small [5/5] * Chicken Avocado Sandwich (to go) - chicken is a little dry and honestly is not worth the $13 from the lack of flavor. There isn't any "wow" factor [3/5] * Lox Sub (to go) - Bread was still crispy after 2 hours and the lox paired well with the cream cheese. It's more packed than the Chicken Avocado sandwich in terms of ingredients and flavor. [4.7/5] The cafe got more busy as we left around 1:45. We ended up seeing this spot across the street from Clinton st baking company after waiting to get called for a table and so glad we found this place. The cold brew and green chai were delicious! I've never tried a green chai and omg it's a blend of chai and matcha flavors which are two of my favorite drinks. We didn't order food but everyone's plates looked very appetizing so next time we visit this cafe we will be ordering food. I liked how you receive a buzzer light with a number for your order number. Great spot for brunch and/or coffee in the heart of the LES. I'm unsure if this was intended, but the decor reminds me of Marrakech (Jardin Majorelle-esque) with all of the tile and plants. There's a good amount of seating, but it gets very busy all day on weekends so I wouldn't rely on being able to find a table. Outlets are in even more limited supply; not a big deal when I want to unplug and read, but means that it's not really a space where I could work. Food is delicious and prices are at least a dollar or two below the market standard. Açaí (and similar) bowls will run you $9 for a small and $12 for a large. I'm unsure how big the large is, but the small is pretty filling. My favorite is the dragon fruit bowl, which is also very picturesque for those who eat with their eyes. Most coffee drinks are around $4.50-$5. Coffee is generally good but I had a turmeric latte this past weekend that had FAR too much turmeric. Baked goods are hit or miss but I really like the cookies and muffins. Great spot to take an out-of-towner friend that you're trying to impress. Worst case scenario you'll have to get your order to go. read more

I absolutely loved this cafe. From the atmosphere to the coffee and food, this is a home run. I ordered one of their egg sandwiches with harissa ketchup and a coffee. The sandwich was filling and light at the same time. I really like that a lot of their menu is on the healthier/ lighter side. This seems like a great place to grab food after a workout or when you're looking for something to satisfy but not stuff. The barista told me the coffee was strong and she was definitely right! I loved it though. If you can snag a table inside definitely take it. The atmosphere is warm, humble and cozy. Many people were posted up here working, so I can tell this is a neighborhood favorite. I went here my first time, my friend and I ordered two iced coffee drinks and paid but we waited over 12 minutes and never got our drinks, so I asked the barista when our drinks would be ready and he said they will make them now, they hadn't even started or forgot our order. When we got our coffees we didn't even get a straw, and had wait to ask another employee for straws, the cup was an iced coffee cup that needed straws. Not a good first experience. read more

If you're tired of the cookie cutter franchise coffee shops (hint: Starbucks & Irving Farm), allow me to introduce you to Pause Cafe. Actually, I had not been aware of this cafe until my friend suggested it today. Located on the LES, this is the cafe that I would wish to spend my lounging time at, in addition to going through their menu. What sets Pause Cafe apart is that they're Moroccan and the decor/ items on the menu will reflect that. They serve brunch all day, sandwiches, Acai bowls, snacks, fresh juices/smoothies and coffee/tea beverages. It doesn't stop there. They carry an assortment of fresh baked goods, fruit and other quick nibbles. Very cozy (and crowded) Moroccan themed seating indoors as well as outdoor tables, but you'd have to be there at the right time to snag something. I met my friend here for coffee today and I am totally obsessed with my selection. The super friendly barista answered questions I had about their coffee, particularly the Moroccan Drip of which I was keen to try. He mentioned it was a strong brew and suggested the Dirty Chai (with espresso shot). Since I'm very familiar with Chai and was in fact surrounded by Moroccan flavor, I was drawn to the Moroccan Drip which included spices---according to the menu. Throwing the dice and taking a chance (only because I'm picky with my coffee and dislike it strong/bold), my large iced coffee (about 20 ounces at $5.44) was served to our table. My friend ordered the same. To accompany our beverage, we split a lemon raspberry pound cake which was divine. But it was the Moroccan Drip iced coffee that stole my heart. I've never, ever tasted anything quite like it as it was not a strong brew and infused with cinnamon sticks & star anise. Absolutely amazing and I need to return immediately. My friend shared the same sentiment. I'm looking forward to visiting again and ordering a delicious breakfast meal to go with my new favorite iced coffee. I wished I was hungrier so I could've tried all of their food items as well (they had me at french toast and vegan cream cheese, no place ever has vegan cream cheese). It took me so long to decide on what to get, they have an extensive list of fresh juice, smoothies, acai bowls, lattes, teas, etc. They also carry brunch items all day apparently. I'm not sure if they bake all their pastries and items in house but I loved the variety and everything looked appetizing. I ended up ordering the Green Chai. When I asked the girl at the register what it was she told me it's a combination of spirulina, matcha, and chai. I thought, spirulina? And chai? Say no more. Must try now. It tasted refreshing, just like a normal chai tbh but with a funky spirulina kick (if you've ever sniffed spirulina powder from a jar you'll know what I'm talking about). After seeing solid reviews for this popular spot, decided to come by on a Sunday afternoon hoping to get a table. Once arriving, realized this is a order-up-front-then-find-a-table situation. Plenty of seating outside so was able to order and sit down quickly. Between two people, settled on the Yogurt Parfait ($8), Nutella Banana Crepe ($9), Spinach Feta Quiche ($7), Cappuccino ($5), and Latte ($5). Once ordering they give you a buzzer when the food is ready; unfortunately it's not all at once and the buzzer rings multiple times when different parts of your order are ready. We got our drinks first - good strong coffee without needing any extra sugar. Parfait comes next, a moderate size bowl of yogurt, granola, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, and honey. Good overall flavor, fruits are fresh though the bananas are not quite ripe. The crepe came several minutes after - a large cake stuffed with Nutella covered bananas. Well balanced again but the bananas are under ripe. About 15 minutes pass and we realize they forgot the quiche. Went over to get our money back for that dish and was given cash (minus the tax associated). Fine enough spot with some kinks to work out. If looking for something small (one dish), then this is probably the place to be. read more

Cute cozy warm. I was shocked this place has evaded me until this point. My friend who lives in LES swears by their chai latte so even though I typically don't like hot coffee nor do I like chai lattes, I ordered the dirty chai and it was amazing. The pastries all looked amazing and were overwhelming to choose from, but the pear dessert thing which I've forgotten the name of, was super tasty. I'm avoiding the M word to describe it but if you know you know. What I like about this place is that it doesn't play loud pop or rap music. The atmosphere is very conducive for conversations or working. This is what I've had so far: Lemon bar: ok, but had a weird play-doughy taste and texture and an almond flavor that was not complimentary. Apple galette: definitely my favorite so far! Flaky, buttery crust, and perfectly spiced apples. I'd go back for this alone. Banana nut smoothie: the flavor is great, but the consistency is more runny and liquidy than I am used to. They also gave it to me warm, like it had been sitting out in the sun all day which was not appetizing. They added more ice when I asked, but I don't really think it saved it. I'd go back for the sandwiches though! Four and a half stars. 10/19: Came back this past week and had a dirty chai with almond milk and a pumpkin pie tart. Dirty chai was good, but the pumpkin tart was absolutely tasteless. After this, I can't say I'd come back. read more

I got the lemon crepes (alas no pancakes offered yet) and boy did I get them full of the lemon cream, it was a great breakfast on a rainy NYC day. Also got a nice macchiato which was deliciously bitter in the best coffee beany way, but I went back anyway to top it up with some hot milk for a dollar extra. Found this cafe and decided to go in because of how nice the ambience was. The menu was huge! There really is something for everyone. We decided to order the Very Berry Power Bowl and the Goat Cheese Veggie Quiche. This is my first time having an açaí bowl, and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the açaí blend at the bottom of the bowl. It was very sour, something I love when I have fruit. The fruit, honey, and granola on top of the bowl balanced very well with these flavors. The Goat Cheese Veggie quiche was okay. I wish there was more cheese in it. WAY more cheese it in. I was pretty much entirely vegetables except for that bit of cheese on top. I liked the side salad it came with. The service was good. Everyone that I spoke to that works there was very nice. The prices are higher than I expected. I understand this is a trendy NYC cafe, but even then I was still surprised by the prices. These two things were $20 total. I want to come back here and try more things next time I'm willing to spend money. Definitely bring your laptop here- it's a great place to get work done. read more
