    Welcome to Paw Paw's
    Tom K.

I had the double cheeseburger burger (about one pound of real hamburger meat) combo that came with good ole fashioned fries. Excellent service by the ladies and met "PawPaw" who had me put my father & father-in-law on the wall in memory of this great country's service in the military. Looking forward to passing through here again for the ribs.

A tribute to those who served.

Great Burgers, Texas Barbecue, and Café favorites. We were traveling home from a visit to our youngest daughter in Houston, and my wife wanted comfort food. I opened Yelp and found PawPaw's just a few miles ahead, so we rerouted and stopped. Were we glad we did. The place is decorated with Firetruck this and that, toys, ride-ons, Signs, etc. The walls were also signed everywhere by Military Veterans stating Name, Branch Rank, Theatre of service, Unit numbers, etc. Quite a hoot. We were told to seat ourselves and that all the Que was already gone, 86ed for the day. We checked out the menu, lots of great stuff to be had. We shared some Double Fried Crunchy Chicken Wings as an appetizer. They were better than Wingstop or Buffalo Wild Wings by far. I wished I had just ordered wings that is until my Burger and Fries arrived. I opted to ad Grilled Onions to my Pepper Jack Cheeseburger. They have a self-service Burger fixings Bar and I had the best burger in years; literally, years. The help was polite, charming and very friendly folks. We will be stopping by to try the Barbecue on our next trip to visit family in Houston. Give them a try, you won't be sorry.

    Double burger and fries

Great food! Service was super friendly. It's definitely a place we will return. Worth the drive.

    Over the entrance.

We had had three bbq's and one cheese burger. All on disposable plates and forks. The food was very good and we also had fried pickles and French fries. Gooood. Nice family place.

It's 4 lanes, not a lot of traffic and limited access as well. Nice low stress return to I-10 after a tasty lunch. The building obviously used to be a home and the inside just further confirms it. Lots of comfortable seating throughout. Parking is all around the building and much of it is in shade from several large trees on the property. It was lunchtime busy when we arrived but we got seated quickly and the service never faltered. The pimento cheese and sausage appetizer was so good. Picky eater got 2 plain chopped brisket tacos and enjoyed them. I got the brisket plate and was surprised to find sausage on there too. The slaw and beans for sides were good choices. Both were very tasty and definitely all their own recipe. We enjoyed it enough that we shall be hoping that lunchtime timing works out again when we are eastbound on I-10 in this area.

We ran into a couple of signs on our way down the highway and The Back Porch BBQ peaked our interest so we stopped in. Parking and location was super easy to get to and navigate. This is a small town BBQ spot so I for sure was impressed with how many folks were inside dining and how many cars the lot could hold. It was a Saturday afternoon and everyone had tables full of delicious barbecue that we passed in front of as we got sat by the friendly staff. We loved the moist brisket sandwich, fall off the bone pork ribs, plus Later on we ordered 1lb of their jalapeno cheddar sausage to go and had it the very next day while back at home in Austin. The sausage was so juicy and succulent that we didn't regret having leftovers for even another meal - morning breakfast with egg - the next day. Portions were large and there was plenty of food to bring back home with us to enjoy later. Great and wonderful and attentive staff is what makes this spot even that more enjoyable.

We had a group of 8 adults who had just completed touring 2 of the Painted Churches, in and around Schulenburg. While our tour guide greeted several servers as we entered like old friends, I don't think that was the cause of their friendliness to our group as a whole, I saw them happily greeting everyone and providing excellent service. Our happy server quickly took drink orders, you can tell when a server is confident in her job and knows the routines as she never wrote anything down but when she returned with drinks, the orders were all correct. She then took orders for lunch, we had a variety of offerings from the menu. I decided on the Tzatziki Salad, a nicely presented Greek style salad with grilled chicken breast slices and some tzatziki with pita points. Others around me had the Rueben and the grilled chicken salad and said everything was perfect. I also heard great things about the home made chicken salad and their hamburgers. And if you feel like your garden needs a bit more color, just step into the garden center after lunch and pick out some lovely plants to take home!

I was pleasantly surprised at the absolutely amazing freshness and quality of the food and modern/light atmosphere of this place (a bit unexpected after a few lackluster food experiences in Schulenberg leading up to our lunch here). It was every bit at good as some of the cafes I've eaten in major cities (where there is heavy dining competition). Mom and I both ordered their delicious chicken salad sandwich, piled high (but not too thickly) with shredded chicken on perfectly baked, flaky (but not too flaky) croissant bread. The chicken salad was a perfect blend of seasonings with a few cranberries for a little sweetness. Divine! Each sandwich came with a side of crispy/perfect (seemingly handmade) chips. Our tour guide ordered a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich which she seemed to really enjoy as well, complete with perfectly buttered and crisp grilled sourdough bread. The atmosphere was very modern and new yet warm and dotted with beautiful antique pieces (be sure to check out the old buffet across from the bathroom doors, gorgeous!). And this place seemed packed with many locals in their brunch attire to enjoy the great food and great hospitality of the wait staff. Behind the restaurant, they also host a beautiful nursery where you can browse under the trees through their fairly extensive collection of plants (flowering and non flowering - we saw some variations of native flowering plants we've either never seen before or don't see often so my mom purchased a few for her garden!), chat with the very knowledgeable and friendly owner of the nursery, browse the little nursery gift shop full of unique and beautiful items, and even visit with the sweet "shop" kitties (who seem to like to hang out near the nursery gift shop entrance) if you wish. All in all, a very special experience at this gem in Schulenberg. We will definitely make this our number one stop for meals (and to buy more plants) in Schulenberg when we return!
