I was a brand new dog owner when my small dog started at Tefani in Dec. 2024. Everyone seemed…read morepleasant at first, but over 1.5 years I noticed a growing list of issues, some I gave the benefit of the doubt on, some took time to notice, and she had friends there, so it took longer to separate her happiness from my safety concerns. I addressed some of these issues with Tefani, but not all, some I didn't bother with since I already knew we were leaving. I'll also be upfront that I was cordial when leaving since I didn't want an awkward exit after blindly trusting them like a second home for so long. Privately, I'd been unhappy for a while, and the issues below are an abridged version of why we left. Health concerns: About once every 1-2 months, my dog came home with diarrhea, a few times severe enough for vet visits. She rarely had diarrhea outside of Tefani. I told staff not to feed her fatty treats since her breed is prone to pancreatitis, but it kept happening. She also had an eye infection needing emergency vet care, plus what seemed like kennel cough. Tefani doesn't require the Bordetella vaccine (my dog is vaccinated), unlike most SF daycares. Facility: The facility is in a sketchy part of the Mission/SOMA border district. Photos showed dirt, what appeared to be mold, loose gates, exposed nails, and improperly set-up air filters. It also lacked central air conditioning, relying on fans and open windows. Her paws came home black every time, making me question how often it was cleaned. Dogs of very different sizes and energy levels were mixed together despite claims of grouping "by energy level." A month before we left, her Fi tracker showed she was taken on afternoon walks around the block. I asked staff to stop because I didn't want her walking in this area, but it continued. Her tracker also went offline for 4+ hours a handful of times, only ever at Tefani, which made me suspicious. Overnight boarding: My dog stayed with owners Watson and Heather twice, and manager Ricardo once. During the owner stays, all her food was gone within days despite clear feeding instructions, photos showed what appeared to be poisonous plants within reach, and I once saw her get stuffed into her carrier in the front seat of their car near the airbags. For the manager stay, I wasn't told the location changed until late the night before I left for my abroad trip. The manager took her off-leash at unfamiliar open space parks, somewhere her recall had never actually been tested since Tefani only goes to an enclosed park, and a photo showed what looked like his vape beside the dogs. Shuttle: Rides regularly took multiple hours each way despite living a short distance, dogs packed 2-4 per crate. A new hire didn't know how to lock the doors and tried putting my dog on the ground instead of a crate. I witnessed a staff member yell at the dogs to stop barking numerous times. Drivers made U-turns in front of my building on a busy street, the shuttle was once left unattended ~30 minutes, and one driver forgot to pick her up. The vehicles had major dents, scratches, and a missing fender. Staff & ownership: the owners have been largely hands-off since last year and never seemed like true dog people. New hires seemed unprofessional and not trustworthy given the number of dogs in their care. I also noticed some sketchy business marketing.

TLDR: My family and I have used this business for nearly a decade. We had a dog die in their care…read morein April 2023 but had such a high degree of trust in the business and the business owner that we continued to use them. In October 2023, the business lost one of our other dogs and my husband and I were the ones to find her. When we found her, she had a shock collar with huge prongs on it tied tightly around her neck and a leash looped onto itself as a choke chain. We never would have known that this was happening if we hadn't been the ones to find her. We want other dog owners to know what's happening. We hate posting online, but this is important. Longer Story: My family and I have used Awesome Pawsome for about a decade. In April 2023, one of our dogs died in their care. The only information we received was that the dog "went limp" and was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital. The dog regularly received veterinary care and had no known heart, breathing, or other issues at the time he passed away. Given that we've used Awesome Pawsome for nearly 10 years and had a lot of trust in them, we continued to use the business. We would not have believed any negative stories about the business prior to this because we had such faith in them. On October 14, 2023, we sent our two dogs (one of which was a newer dog) to board with Awesome Pawsome. The dogs were to be returned on Tuesday, October 17. At 8 p.m. that evening, the dogs had not been returned. When I called and texted the owner, she told me there was a "glitch" in scheduling and that the dogs would be returned in about 45 minutes. At 9:23 p.m., she called to tell us that the dog walkers had lost one of the dogs and blamed it on the dog, stating the dog had tried to bite the dog walker. We rushed to the boarding house in the Sunset neighborhood, which is where the dog had been lost. The dog walker that lost this dog was the same dog walker that had been with our other dog at the time he passed away. He and another dog walker helped us look for our dog, which we were thankful for. We made sure to ask them whether they had been bitten by our dog because we were willing to pay for medical bills if this had happened, and both stated no. We looked at their hands and saw no bite marks. After a long search, my husband and I were the ones that found our dog at around 11:30 p.m. and put her in our car to go back to the boarding house to retrieve our other dog. During the car ride back to the dog boarding house, my husband noticed that our dog had an extra collar around her neck and asked what it was. The collar was very tight around the dog's neck and when we removed it, we realized that it was a huge shock collar with multiple prongs that were digging into our dog's neck. I have attached photos of the shock collar to this review (taken by my husband while confronting the dog walkers) and as you will see, it is inappropriate for a dog that is about 10-12 pounds. As we pulled up to the dog boarding house, we also noticed a leash around our dog's neck and realized it was looped onto itself as a choke chain instead of being clipped to her harness, which she was wearing at the time we found her. The leash was very short, to the point that if our dog were to take more than 1-2 steps away from the dog walker, the leash would be choking her. We got out of the car to confront the dog walkers and one told us that it wasn't a shock collar, that it just vibrates, then switched to telling us that the shock collar was on a "low setting." Then he asked for us to return the leash and said that any issues we had were "with the business," meaning the owner. I immediately texted the owner and asked for a meeting to discuss the use of the devices. At the time we were scheduled to talk, the owner casually stated that the timing "wasn't lining up" and said we should reschedule. I canceled because the owner clearly wasn't taking our concerns seriously. We would not have believed this review if someone else had posted it. We have calendars they've given us with photos of our dogs over the years all throughout our home. Our family does not post online reviews generally, but we never would have known this was happening if we hadn't been the ones to find our dog, so we want to make sure to let other dog owners know that Awesome Pawsome may be using these devices on their dogs without their knowledge. Regardless of whether or not a dog has behavioral issues (which doesn't seem accurate here given the lack of bite marks on any dog walkers), Awesome Pawsome should reach out to owners to let them know or return the dogs, not use shock collars and choke chains on the dogs.

Our experience with Grateful Dog on Thursday, November 6th was deeply troubling and ultimately…read moreunacceptable. This was our dog Indio's first visit. When we picked him up around 5 p.m., he had a severe laceration on his lower eyelid and was visibly shaken. A young staff member admitted he was in another room at the time and that no one was supervising the dogs when the injury occurred--despite Grateful Dog's website explicitly promising "supervised play, indoor and outdoor." It was clear this employee was not trained to handle incidents of any kind. He also told us he had been instructed over the phone by his boss, Ernie, to clean the wound and apply ointment without notifying us. Ernie made a judgment call based on a dark photo instead of contacting us. As a result, our dog was left with an open, untreated wound for the rest of the day with no communication whatsoever. We took Indio straight to the emergency hospital, where he required full sedation and several hours of treatment. He remained there for nearly six hours. Both the ER team and our primary vet agreed that the lack of supervision, failure to notify us, and the attempt to treat a significant injury without consent were irresponsible. Indio is now on multiple medications, wearing a cone for weeks, and his emergency care totaled $1,295.26. When we later spoke with Ernie, his attitude was shockingly dismissive. His exact words were: "I've been doing this for 30 years -- didn't seem like a big deal." No responsible professional minimizes an injury requiring emergency sedation as "not a big deal." We then emailed a detailed summary with photos and documentation. After that, Grateful Dog completely ghosted us. No response, no acknowledgment, no concern. Accidents happen. But zero supervision, untrained staff, unauthorized medical treatment, a manager who downplays the injury, and complete silence afterward are not accidents -- they are serious failures in judgment and care. If you're considering this facility, ask very direct questions about who is actually supervising your dog and what their real protocols are. Our experience suggests there is a significant gap between what's advertised and what actually happens.
