While she is still walking limited, she is walking. Acupuncture, PT, laser, underwater treadmill, all together have given her strength and made her back legs mobile again. It is not easy to afford of course, but I love her, and we have to find a way to afford this for her, to keep her going for as long as we can. They also saw my tripod foster and we will continue coming once she turns 1, to get full benefit of the cold laser. We love all the doctors and staff. Dr. Ma and Juan truly make us feel like part of the family, and I am confident in their recommendations for the care of any dogs I bring. There are ridiculous people in this world who take their dogs to physical therapy, and this year,…read moreI've discovered that I am one of them. We got our basset hound Duke in 2012, when he was about a year old, and thirteen years and several major life changes later, he remains our sweet, beautiful baby boy. He's held up pretty well for an old dog, but a few months ago, his hind legs just suddenly stopped working. He couldn't stand or walk on his own, and he was hurting himself by dragging his hind legs across the floor. He still did his business in the yard when we got him out there, but he was having accidents in the house several times a day. It was scary and sad and felt very much like the beginning of the end. We took him our vet, then a neurologist, who told us he likely had intervertebral disc disease, and that with his age and heart murmur, surgery might not be worthwhile. I was ready to get him fitted for one of those dog wheelchairs, but the neurologist had a better idea: she thought Duke might be a good candidate for physical therapy. She gave us a list of places we might go, including CARE--short for California Animal Rehabilitation. I made an initial appointment with CARE for the Monday of the following week. I have since found that appointments tend to book up, but that I can almost always get one less than a week in advance. I think he saw both Dr. Rabin and Dr. Ma on that first visit, and they recommended eight weeks of physical therapy and acupuncture, starting immediately. They also suggested a few injections and supplements to add to his food--I said no to the injections with a scammy wellness clinic flavor, but I took home the supplements and approved the Adequan. I spent the next two months of my life shuttling my dog to West L.A. for his appointments, first three times and then twice a week. It was an enormous pain in the ass (terrible parking on top of the general hassle), as well as incredibly expensive (we do have pet insurance, which softened the blow). But the alternative was to let him suffer and think about putting him down, which we were not ready to do. Duke saw immediate improvement. Some of this came from two additional medications and the purchase, suggested by CARE, of the right harness to help him go about his daily activities. But it was obvious that the CARE regimen was working. He started walking again, both with and without assistance, and while he isn't quite back to his old self, his quality of life has been, if anything, better than it was before--he's been getting a lot of attention for an old dog with two small human siblings in the house. Some of this came from the lovely people at CARE, who showered him with praise, treats, and pets as they led him through exercises, acupuncture, and, amazingly, hydrotherapy (imagine a stubborn basset hound in a water treadmill, his ears making ripples as he plods reluctantly along). I've met like a dozen therapists and technicians across our appointments--the team is big, and you kind of see whoever's available. I wouldn't have minded a little more continuity, as I sometimes got conflicting advice, but every single person was warm and competent and great with my dog. The front desk team was always nice, too. I took Duke back to his neurologist after eight weeks of therapy, and she was thrilled with his progress, and honestly maybe a little bit surprised. She said to keep doing what we were doing, if that was at all feasible. Unfortunately, we do have lives and jobs and children, and the twice-a-week CARE schedule just isn't sustainable in the long term. We decided to see how he does without his appointments, knowing that we can always take him back if he starts going downhill again. It's been two weeks now, and he's still in much better shape than at the beginning of this saga, if not quite as consistently mobile as during his time in physical therapy. We don't have the equipment and expertise of the CARE team, but they did set us up for success at home, with detailed instructions for exercises and supportive care. We're not delusional--we know Duke's days are numbered--but we feel like CARE has given us a miraculous reprieve. Duke is happy and mobile in a way we hardly dared imagine when his legs first went out. We're grateful for the team at CARE and plan to bring him back when he needs their help again.

Instead, I was met with cold gatekeeping and a complete lack of transparency from the front desk staff, Brock. When seeking specialized physical rehabilitation, pet parents are already dealing with immense emotional and financial stress. I asked straightforward, basic questions regarding the estimated cost of a standard wheelchair/cart fitting so I could plan financially. I was told they couldn't give me any ballpark figures until I paid a mandatory $350 upfront exam fee. Furthermore, when I pushed for basic structural transparency, the staff member became defensive, took my questions personally, and refused to speak with me further, stating "someone else" would have to call me back. It is incredibly discouraging to be met with robotic gatekeeping when you are looking for an empathetic medical team to help your ailing animal. Veterinary care should be rooted in compassion, collaboration, and financial honesty--not hiding basic service costs behind a steep gate fee. If you are looking for an open, communicative partner for your pet's palliative care, look elsewhere.

He received necessary procedures including blood transfusion to stabilize his condition. I did not want to leave him at ER for more tests and observations because I have never had any pets survived ER stays. We did receive blood transfusion and medications which seemed to be working and were told that he needed medical attention in order to survive. Since his regular vet was helpless, I decided to look into alternatives. I found this place on Yelp with raving reviews, and like most pet owners in desperate situations, I decided to give it a try. I first spoke with I believe her name was Lyric. She was very charming and well spoken, and made an appointment immediately. I also recieved a call from Yael after I emailed over my cat's medical records and was told that she thinks my cat simply had urinary track infection and she can help. During our visit, Yael and Lyric worked together and performed a basic exam, then I was told that we need a biofeedback scan which will tell us exactly what's going on. This " procedure " consist of sticking two wet pads somewhere on the underside of my cat, and the wires connected the wet pads to a laptop which supposedly would feed all the information to a program. I thought that seemed overly simple, but I was in a state of panic, I chose to believe it's some advanced science that I didn't understand. I was told that they will rush the result but it will be later that evening or next day. Then Yael proceeded to prescribe a list of remedies which is mostly supplements including a jar of homemade yogurt. The visit, including all the remedies I was told were necessary, came to just under $700. They also only accept cash or Zelle payments, no credit cards. The instruction I was given was to stop the medicationd from ER immediately and only take what was prescribed by Yael, and I did. At home, shortly after I gave my cat what Yael prescribed, he started vomiting violently and was visibly weaker. I call and told Yael what was happening and was met with loud, non-stop yelling, telling me that her remedies were right and I must follow her instructions. The biofeedback report showed pages of colorful breakdown and included readings of "pepsine secretion coefficient" and "small intestine peristalsis function" values, plus "protien metabolism value", "liver fat content value", plus kidney, lung function analysis, even blood circulation system analysis, etc. This program of theirs can read all these from two wet pad sticked to the skin of my cat? I ultimately decided to consult with a licensed vet, and luckily I found Dr. Sharp from a referral, and my cat's conditions improved without complications within days at a quarter of the cost. He is healthy and happy today. As pet parents, we are vulnerable to be taken advantage of when our pets become critically ill. I hope my experience can be helpful to anyone in similar situation and can make proper decisions for both your pets and you.

Prince has a variety of issues, including mild hip displaysia, patella luxation, Cushing's (causing leg weakness), and a torn ACL/CCL. Each visit, Josh brings a variety of tools and adapts the exercises and approach to Prince's needs. He is so gentle and patient and never pushes Prince past his limits. I have learned so much from Josh, and feel empowered to notice and address signs of discomfort when they come up. He does a great job of explaining what he's doing and how each exercise is working, and making them easy to practice on our own. Josh also provides cold laser therapy, which definitely seems to ease discomfort. Prince is always more mobile after his sessions.
