Renting a car in LA... Payless Car Rental Company is not my first choice when I rent a car in Los Angeles. I think that there are lower rates elsewhere. I see more shuttles from other companies that pick up customers at the airport and bring them to the rental car lots. (Sometimes, I catch those other shuttles because they're right next to Payless!) So, why do I use Payless? When I book my flight on Hawaiian Airlines, a convenient pop-up appears and offers me bonus Hawaiian Airlines miles when I reserve a car through Hawaiian Airlines. I don't have to figure out the car pick up time nor the car drop off time. I figure that if the flight is delayed, the car company will be informed. The location is relatively close to LAX. I usually go to Costco Gasoline in Inglewood to fill up the tank before I return the car. Most times, service is typical...I understand that the salesperson is trying to upsell, but hey... don't get all grumpy when I don't take any extra coverage! Haha! The worst experience was during Rose Parade time. I arrived in December and Payless was telling me that all compact cars AND intermediate sized cars are sold out. Yes, it's the holiday season, but wow...don't give me a GIGANTIC truck like an F-150...omg! I could hardly reach the gas pedal! I didn't want to haul that monster truck to Irwindale to work on the Parade float! No way! That's too far! The guy in front of me had the same situation. He parked on the side before exiting the lot. He said he was going to return the truck because he couldn't get in and out of the vehicle because of his recent hip surgery. He was going to go to a nearby competitor and get a regular car. Good idea. I backed up and returned the "Monster Truck" almost in tears. I told the young salesman that the elderly gentleman gave me the GIGANTIC truck that I wasn't able to drive. He gave "stink eye" to the other sales rep and gave me a regular sized car! Voila!!! Yes...sometimes it pays to complain. Am I going to rent from Payless again? Uhg...I guess so...because of the bonus Hawaiian Airlines miles and the convenience. I could try a competitor next time... just for comparison...

    Dirty cars.

59,000+ miles. Grouchy people Car so dirty we had to stop at gas station to clean windows. $60/day. Cheapest rate we could find. Huh?

The line is out the door and down the sidewalk. Ridiculous and unbelievable. Expected wait time is 2 hours.

The shuttle arrived quickly at the airport. Our female driver was exceptional. Sadly people don't tip her. On arrival to the rental location, the line was long and out the door. After waiting for about 40 mins, realized that line was for the rental co sharing space with them. Got in the right line and still had to wait a bit but the staff was quick and very courteous Getting the car was interesting. You are given an area and you can pick any car available. That was nice. Our car was clean and roomy. I do wish it had built in gps. But I'm prepared, I always bring mine. Overall a good rental company

Oy vey....I honestly don't know how to feel about this car rental being in business... Arrived at LAX and spent about 15 mins or so waiting for a Payless shuttle. To no avail, we hopped on the Thrifty shuttle instead and walked over to Payless. I was scared upon arrival because I read the previous reviews on long waits just to check in and long waits to get cars. Luckily, we didn't have to wait that long to check in but we were told that there would be an hour wait to get our car. When we got to the car lot, there were a bunch of upset looking people who said they've been waiting a long time. People were so hungry that they ended up buying snacks from the vending machine and little children were crying from being hungry and fed up. We actually didn't have to wait that long for our car too, we probably only spent about 30-40 mins total in this rental. The first car we got reeked of air freshener and we found out it was because someone smoked weed in there so they were trying to mask the smell. The second car we got was perfect or so we thought. Here's where the story of one bad thing after the other starts, Turns out they have such a high turnover rate and demand for cars that they just clean the car but they don't do full inspections, which is very dangerous!! Customers expect the car to be in tip top condition, but it wasn't the case with our car. 1. The tire pressure light was on but we didn't notice it until after we drove to Roscoe's and finished eating. Luckily, there was a gas station next door to Roscoe's and so I pumped air into the tires. OMG, the PSI was supposed to be 35 on front and rear and 3/4 tires were 20 PSI.... Thank god I noticed it before it was too late as we were trying to drive all the way to the Citadel. 2. The car sputters and lags when you try to accelerate on certain streets, (i.e hilly streets) Meaning there is probably something internally wrong with this car. 3. I was stranded in the rain at the Farmer's Market because the car wouldn't start. I tried the first time and the "Check car battery light" came on but everything else worked, (i.e air conditioning and radio) but the car just wouldn't go anywhere. Turned off the car and tried again, same thing happened. Then I call the car rental and they tell me they're going to send someone. The tow company calls me 10 mins later telling me they will be there 60 mins or less. I waited a bit longer inside the car and decided to give it another shot. Third times' the charm because it worked and I was able to drive the car. I called them back letting them know I no longer need assistance. They ended up calling me back 80 mins later letting me know they are coming... Thank god the car was able to start again, or I would've been stuck there for probably 2 hours. Overall, I would not use this car rental again, they don't take care of their cars and they don't do full inspections before handing the keys off to customers. Super dangerous practice. Spend more money at a well known car rental because your safety and life is more precious than the few dollars you've saved here. P.S thanks for helping me get my maverick badge though!

Customer service was fine but the communication was difficult. There were fees that weren't explained that were somewhat confusing.

    One minimum wage worker sucks.

Wish I would have paid more because the deal at PAYLESS a is a joke. Frank is not happy with rental boys ability to process a line of people acquiring there car. 15 minutes per person is a JOKE! Come on Payless boost up your minimum wage and hire some real workers to handle the job. It's not rocket science it's just giving me cars keys and smiling as you do it. Now the car is fantastic, it has 4 wheels and a full tank of gas. What more could I ask for in a car?

Saying I hate enterprise is an understatement- these people don't even deserve one star. CALLING…read moreTHEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT GETS YOU NO WHERE-I AM PROOF. Their branch in Miami airport is a flaming dumpster fire (have called customer service 5x no resolution ) - Miami gave us a broken car with a faulty engine - and the enterprise at LAX isn't any better. I lost a custom dog collar in the Range Rover we rented. Immediately called them and filled a form online. Got a message hours later that they didn't find it- a month later got a call from a guy saying he found a dog collar in the Range Rover as he'd accidentally dropped his credit card between the seat . He was kind enough to contact me and send it to me via mail (what was left of it) What I got back was basically a few stones and my dog's tag. Some certified a hole ripped up the collar, made a piece of jewelry for themselves with the clasp and then dropped the pieces they didn't want back in the car. I hope you go to hell. So, not only does enterprise not do their job when it comes to lost and found- either the employees themselves or the people renting cars are kleptomaniacs and steal valuables. Humanity is in a sad place if someone doesn't have money to buy a necklace and steals a chain made for a dog. Enterprise is a disgusting organization and anyone who works for them is inept. A bunch of criminals work here. Truly the worst of humanity and low IQ. Oh and their lost and found doesn't have a phone number. I can't even imagine the things they've stolen from customers / had stolen by the people that rent their cars due to their inability to do their job. This corporation is a subsection of the worst of humanity. * Also in response to Nellie- what a liar. You guys aren't going to do ANYTHING. No one has reached out to me I keep having to chase to get help or a response. LIARS. "Be prepared to share" - what a joke

That's how I decided to rent a car from Fox Rent A Car. I caught the free shuttle outside of Terminal 6 at LAX. They have you fill out a damage form to show any existing issues with the vehicle and then hand it to the attendant on the way out of the lot.
